BOOK II of The DISCIDIUM trilogy finds Braedon Walker and Dr. Bo Granger trapped in the integrated province of Conexus with little hope of ever returning to their segregated countries. Yet, to their mutual surprise, the destitute township of Goldcrest soon becomes a place where unlikely friendships and alliances begin to form. The arrival of six Conexan smugglers, however, could destroy the township's fragile harmony once their sinister agenda is exposed. Trouble also continues to escalate in Virsias and Mulierus, where a desperate Caradine Drake teams up with an inexperienced lawyer and a biogeneticist to take down Governess Leda McCready, before the vengeful ruler of the XX province can execute Caradine's imprisoned mother. Unfortunately, removing the corrupt governess proves more problematic than anticipated, when it seems her co-conspirators may reside on both sides of the Discidium Wall.
Megan K. Olsen was born in Grants, New Mexico to a metallurgical engineer and a math professor. By the age of eighteen, she had already lived in six different states, and had developed a taste for travel and experiencing a variety of cultures and peoples. In her early twenties, she received a B.A. in English and a Master's degree in Education, and taught as a professor of English literature for fifteen years. She is currently living in the beautiful state of Colorado and is working on her fifth novel and third screenplay.
Wow, what a sequel! Without giving anything away, the series continues to get darker; major characters are brutalized in ways that prove this is a series unafraid to take risks; and females continue to be the leading feature. The plot twists are many, but they seem like logical steps to take. Bo and Braedon, the main protagonists, prove themselves worthy of being series leads, though I myself love, love, love Bo's storyline. As for the world in which this story is set, it is original enough to really elevate the genre.
I could not be more excited to read the concluding book of this series. Book of the summer, this is! Read more, I must. Why has this series not been picked up by Hollywood producers??
Ms Olsen is a gifted writer with a vivid imagination that she translates well to the page. The strength of the women, the quality of the relationships, the intrigue, the range of issues to consider (genetic engineering, overpopulation, segregation, etc.), the thorough description, and the colourful prose make this novel a page-turner that is difficult to put down. I knew once I finished this second book in the trilogy, an impatient wait for the final book in the series would begin. And so I wait...
