For the Bob Dylan Obsessed, this is interesting for the tiny tidbits here and there. Who knows what's true and isn't. I think if you want to know who the man is just Read Chronicles VOL 1. no matter how mythical it is, you get a feeling of the man behind the myth. Dylan is always so great at derailing any expectation of himself with absolutley poetic sarcasm and irony. An example in this book: "May 22, 1979 While in court defending himself against a defamation-of-cahracter suit by Patty Valentine, Dylan is questioned about his property. He replies "You mean my treasures here on earth?"
A detailed, but not overwhelming, chronology of Bob Dylan's life and career from birth until 1995. (Actually, it begins before his birth, with his grandparents.) The author occasionally interjects his opinions on various matters, but the book is primarily factual and biographical. I recommended this book as a reference guide for any Dylan fan but not for entertainment.
Now this is true philately. And Heylin's infamous butting in with ridiculous opinions serves this project extremely poorly. A misguided project to begin with (what insights would such a project give somebody? all it gave me was the impression that in 1963 Dylan was really productive, which a lot of people know already.)
Less of a book then a collection of notes, there are considerably better Bob biographies on the market (including Heylin's Behind the Shades). But this is a diverting and easy read with lots of great trivia and minutiae.
