Chris faced up to the fact that he was gay young man in spite of all the stories he read where he didn't fit the profile-his family wasn't loaded, he didn't drive an incredible road machine, and he was neither effeminate nor the super?jock. He didn't hate himself, and while he didn't exactly bolt out of the closet, he wasn't in a state of painful denial either. So, what did he want?Chris wanted love but that's tough to find. But that didn't matter anyway, because everything he heard and saw told him all gay men wanted was sex-and that he knew how to find.Looking for it one night he met Jamie Levesque, and with stars in his eyes he had to change his mind... The way Chris saw it, once he had a boyfriend, everything was going to be different. Just like in the stories, life with Jamie was going to be sunshine and lollipops forever-right?Uh?huh. Right.Read about it in a story that's told by Chris in his own words and in his own special way.
This book is pretty special, not fitting into the classic happy perfect love of almost all novels of gay romance. The characters are very interesting and easy to picture and love, despite of (or because of) their flaws. The main character, who is also the narrator, is quite sarcastic, but without being even the least jaded. At least half of the book is very funny because of the smart dialogue and silly situations the above mentioned narrator is clumsy enough to get himself into. The rest of the story, however, touched on some serious situations anyone can easily find when looking for love or just plain sex. I'd probably not give it 4 stars, but rather 3.75 because of how the story was structured with lots of flashbacks and skipping from one timeline to another. It confused me a couple of times. I also realized that one particular scene from the beginning of the novel isn't continued till page 100 and something. I understand how they could work as a way to create suspense and to make the reader curious, but I even forgot about some of them because they were so far apart.
(Don't misunderstand me. It's a great book! I hesitate with the 4 star rating only because I wouldn't give it a 5 - a save them for the ones that I absolutely love - and a 4 is the next best thing)
This was an erotic themed story about high school romance which eventually blossomed into something with more depth and more characters. It was originally published on a website called Nifty and was one of the success stories from the site. There's essentially 2 stories - this one, and a spin off called "And the Other Friends" - I read this in high school, cira 2002, and eventually came back and read it all just to see what had become of the story. The writing isn't great, but for the era the was originally written, it stood out for breaking away from smut and into a coming of age story. Its a unique product of the time, akin to Queer as Folk. Hell, the author even had an email address from Lycos, haha. The Boyfriend is not a terrible story, and for gay men of a certain age (mid 30s+) it'll be a nostalgic read.
Really, really liked it, I need to regroup my brain better to give a good review but I really loved Chris, in the beginning he comes a little like a jerk and superficial, but after reading a little more you understand where he comes from and shows his true values.
I loved that it touched one theme not many of this kind of books touch, STDs between teens, it wasn't anything too gruesome, but it does tell you they are there.
Jamie... he wasn't a total asshole, he had a lot of good things, unfortunately he wasn't boyfriend material, I loved how his character was managed.
I liked the ending, a lot, really really did, I loved how Chris stood for himself, he was in love, yet he didn't lose his common sense and i loved him for that.
I only wish there were more books from this author.
