A fresh, fast-paced cocktail of a heist, a good cause and some seriously unexpected consequences...
Jackson Rich is an unlucky man -- he's lost his job, his house and it looks like he's going to lose the love of his life. To buy his terminally ill wife Candice more time, he'll try just about anything. Including robbing a bank, on the one day of the year everything shuts down: Melbourne Cup day. To do it, Jack has to call in a promise from his old gang. It's been a long time since they were all together, but they would do anything for him -- at least that's what he's banking on.
Nothing could possibly go wrong. Until a couple of kids overhear Jack and his gang planning the robbery, that is. Even after thirty-odd years as a cop Detective Steel has never been presented with a scenario like this, but he has to act upon the tip-off he's been given. Somewhere in Brisbane, sometime during the running of the 1992 Melbourne Cup, a bank is going to be robbed. But to catch the thieves, Steel must let the heist happen. He's about to make the quickest bust in history. What could go wrong?

She lives in Brisbane, Australia with her very own hero and a fluffy little dog who specializes in hijacking her writing time. Meanwhile, Kendall’s two sons are off making their own adventures – look out world.

The desperation that Jackson Rich felt in the face of his beloved wife, Candice’s terrible illness was keeping him awake at night. Without the surgery she needed she would die – the cost was over $74,000 as they didn’t have medical insurance; the waiting list was long and he knew if they had to wait until her name came up, she would definitely be no longer with him. His outrageous plan; the only thing Jack could think of to make the necessary money to pay for Candice’s surgery – to rob a bank in Brisbane city on Melbourne Cup Day – at the time the race was running; the streets would be empty of people and cars…it would work; it had to work!
Contacting his old friends, including his brother Jimmy for help, Jack had no idea if they would meet with him. But they all owed him a debt; admittedly it was a long standing debt, but Jack hoped they would show up. And show up they did; their planning went well – it seemed that everything would fall into place. But little did they know that young boys Trent and Max were underneath the building they were in, listening…
When Detective Montgomery Steel was faced with a person telling him and other detectives about a planned robbery on Melbourne Cup day, they were sceptical. But there were elements of what they were told that rang true. Short on man-power they did the best they could under the circumstances; after all, they were sure to catch the perpetrators with the information they were given – weren’t they? What could possibly go wrong?
Double Take by Aussie author Kendall Talbot was an extremely different take on criminals, a crime and the consequences of what was done when it seemed there were no other options. I felt for Jack; understood his desire to do everything he possibly could for Candice. Even knowing it couldn’t possibly work, I wondered how the author was going to add the intrigue needed. And one of the characters! Oh my goodness – what a piece of work! Double Take was a thoroughly enjoyable crime novel with a difference, and one which I have no hesitation in recommending.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy to read and review.
Two young boys are playing under a deserted shed when people come into the building above them. They stay quiet so they won’t be discovered and overhear Jack’s plan to rob a bank on Melbourne Cup day – the day where a horse race stops a nation and all eyes are turned to Melbourne. The boys run home and tell their dad who doesn’t believe them – so knowing the gang is going to return to make final plans the two boys sneak back and record the conversation. On hearing the evidence their dad’s girlfriend now enters the story and takes a lot of interest, she makes a decision that starts off the twists and turns of one of the story lines. There are a few story lines – both past and present – and connections between them all - and I did get a little confused at times in the first half of the book until I sorted everything out in my mind – by the second half I was well and truly hooked.
The action is not confined to Australia or one period of time – with flashbacks to when they were teens when after a botched crime Jack went to jail to protect the rest of the gang. Because he was the scape goat then he feels that he has them over a barrel, so to speak, to help him out. And they all want to help his wife. Plans made they were confident in their success – except the police now know that a bank is going to be robbed – just not which one, or where – and limited man power has made their job harder.
Jack was hard to love – I certainly understood his motivation to commit a crime, but there was no way it could work surely? Yet he went ahead with it with a mish mash of ‘gang members’ who had all changed since their youthful indiscretion. Really, controlling the whole heist was like trying to herd cats. Double Take is a very interesting crime story, fast paced with characters brimming with good intentions, and at least one you would cheerfully throw over a cliff.
Rating: Above average - was very readable and I really liked it but was easily able to put it down and walk away for a while.
I wish to thank the author Kendall Talbot for my copy to read and review
This is a nice, feel good crime thriller based in Brisbane, Australia. The message seems to be that while crime doesn’t pay if the perpetrator does his time, pays his or her debt to society, all should be well, but that karma will always bite you on the bottom if you don’t. I liked it. the characters were believable and I could relate to them. They didn’t seem to develop much as they grew up/older, though. The plot was a little too twisty and turny, making it a tad unbelievable. But it is a novel, afterall. It was simply written without delusions of grandeur, but without any particular phrases, descriptions, or imagery of note. More nitty-gritty expected in the next book in the series please. More detail. More character development. But a nice, easy read.
Double take is a good read but it took me awhile to get into the story. The first half just did not keep me captivated however the second half became more involved and was much better at keeping me in the story for Jack, Candice and steele. The twist and turns of the story is a good reason to give Double take a try!!
Talbot always delivers on fast paced, high action adventure romance and Double Take is no exception. From the opening chapter there's an element of immediacy that paces the story and maintains throughout.
The desperation facing the lead character is palpable throughout and puts the reader in a position where not only do you understand why he's acting criminally, but you feel empathy for him and becoming almost hopeful for his success.
An engaging and entertaining read that offers a fantastic and unique insight into the criminal mind whilst maintaining all the elements of suspense, adventure, and action that you expect from Talbot.
This story is basically about the desperation of one man to do what he felt he had to do for the love of his life was truly captivating from beginning to end. The back story of the characters and their devotion to Jack that started when they were teenagers is truly inspiring. No matter the right or wrong of the situation they were there for him because he was there for them. Kendall Talbot has done it again!!! She has provided us with a story that truly has everything: love, loss, adventure, twists and turns!!!! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to get lost in a truly captivating, multi faceted story!!
I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery and suspense that surrounded "Double Take" on every page. Twist after twist, turn after turn, "Double Take" kept me guessing. Just when I thought, "This is it," another twist came! I really got sucked into this story and it made me want to watch every, and I mean EVERY episode there is of "Law & Order". I look forward to the next installment!
As the title says, this is a gripping book full of twists, turns and surprises that kept me on the edge wanting to see what will happen next in the book. It just forced me to turn the pages until I ended reading it whole. It is very detailed and entertaining story, I hope there will be second book.
My second, most enjoyable read from talented author Kendall Talbot. Completely different from my first read this one is a well-written bank robbery mystery and its aftermath with a surprise ending. I will most certainly read more books from this author.
This story is all about a bank heist. And boy, oh boy, is it a good one!
Jack has a wife who is ill and needs an operation to get any better, but they can’t afford it and she is getting sicker by the week. He makes a plan to rob a bank and gathers together a group of old childhood friends to help him. They all owe him for something they did together as children and for which he took the blame. Unfortunately, whilst the rest escaped, he couldn’t and they all thought he would get a smack on the hand, but someone took something and never admitted to it, so he was sent away for a few years. This affected his job choices later in life and they all promised to do him a favour, whenever he called it due.
Some of them are not exactly what you might expect. Jack’s brother has not lead a very smart existence and likes his alcohol too much, and has brought along a friend who no-one else knows or trusts, for a vital role. Another friend is now married to a rich man and very well off. A weird mix of people, but they all agree to aid Jack, for the sake of his wife, but also for their own pay out! Once the expected stash is split so many ways, then it will be just enough to pay for Jack’s wife’s surgery, with a little left over for them.
Only problem is, someone has been listening to what Jack and his friends are discussing and thinks they should tell someone about it. The heist has been arranged for a day with a large race meet and so the town will be deserted and all the police elsewhere. A Detective Steel gets a tip-off about the bank heist, but something is a bit hinky about the person giving this information. The only information lacking is the actual location of the heist, but at least he has been given the gang’s location for after the heist, so he can catch them red-handed.
As you may guess, not everything will go to plan and there are some really big surprises still to come! Some are very inventive and leave you wondering how no-one managed to figure it all out. Some will do well from the bank heist, others will suffer, and yet more will get their just deserts. Whether Jack’s wife, the love of his life, will get the operation she requires or not, or if everything was worth it in the end, will be for the reader to find out by finishing the book. I loved the twists and unexpected parts of the story. I will be looking out for some more books by this author to read in the future. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I can’t begin to say how much I enjoyed Double Take (Detective Steel Mystery, #1) by Kendall Talbot or how late I stayed up reading this superb book. I have read several of Kendall Talbot’s books, loving them all. Exotic places and complicated mysteries seemed to be her forte. However with Double Take other than a couple of short plane trips near the end, all of the story takes place in Brisbane.
Usually criminals are the bad guys but Jack Rich has a story. Here it is told. By no means applauding criminals, it is certainly a different take on why one might be compelled to commit robbery. He and the other characters are complex with the plot having twists and turns that aren’t seen coming especially by the characters. This is because there are several groups of characters unknown to each other which all connect perfectly in the end. Bad decisions, betrayal, loss, guilt, restitution, redemption, forgiveness, and love all find their place in this story even more than the suspense or intrigue, though they are there too.
I wasn’t sure Ms. Talbot could write a one place story that would be 5 Stars for me since I loved visiting the different locales with her characters but she does so in spades. Jack, Candice, Steele and Trent and their story will stay with me for a long time. The only thing that would be better would be is if there is a second book coming soon. So in closing if you enjoy a great story with real, genuine characters and a strong descriptive plot then Double Take is the book for you.
I received the book through a Bookfunnel.com giveaway. Now I am so glad that I did. I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
How would you cope with watching the love of your life slowly dying? When all that was needed was a simple operation, but not having the funds to pay is the real killer. This is what Jack Rich is dealing with right now. With no money and no health insurance, Jack feels that his only other option is to do the unthinkable, and rob a bank. And what better day to pull off this heinous crime than on the one day that stops the Nation, Melbourne Cup Day. He sets his plans in motion not realizing that two little pairs of ears were listening to everything. He never knew that those two little boys and their hideout would change his life forever, but would it be for the better or worse?
This story has a few unexpected surprises up it's sleeve. I loved the different POV's, helped me connect better to the characters. But with some chapters I did find myself a little confused with which POV I was hearing from, it would've been great to have names on the chapters to help out with that part. Aside from that Talbot brings such vivid details I felt like I was back in 1992 watching all this unfold.
Talbot has produced a fast paced, entertaining story, with engaging characters, suspense and heart felt emotion. I recommend this story to anyone looking for something different and fun!
A 'flashback' double dialogue relates initially how, as wild teenagers, Jack, Rachel, Pete, Donny and Jimmy robbed a convenience store, realising too late they'd tripped a police alarm and by agreement put the money back and Jack was chosen to be the scapegoat, as a result of which he spent years in 'Juvie'. The second theme takes place years later, when the reformed 'gang' agree to rob a bank on Melbourne Cup Day, to reimburse themselves for the high lives they never really had.
Unknown to the gang, who overhears their meetings? Who do Trent and Max tell? What happens next? Who is Gemma and what does she do to benefit from the robbery? What does she leave for Murray? What does he do with it? When do Trent and Max find this out? What do they do with this knowledge? Where is Gemma now? How does the Gang trace her on their release from prison? Who are the two Candices? Who is Tiffany and how does she die? What happens to the money in the end? Is everyone satisfied with this?
With more twists and turns than a Chubby Checker hit, the action moves across continents in this tale of double crosses, loyalty and treachery, murder and morality - a book that will keep you guessing and gasping to the very last page. Get your copy today - and tell all your friends!
Double Take is a fascinating take on what you would do to save the person that you love. What's right or wrong doesn't appear to have a bearing when it comes to that. Jack is in a difficult situation - he's already lost his house and now he faces losing his wife unless he can come up with $75,000 to save her. I loved how the storyline is spaced across a time period to include the after-effects of the robbery. It's an interesting twist that nothing with the heist is as expected and both the police and the robbers are duped in the end. In a way, I feel that Tiffany's end was fitting after all that she had done. That said, the action isn't confined to one location or one time period which can be off-putting to some. I feel like the action was balanced out with a touch of mystery. There was a touch of romance to be seen, it's just not a large part of the story. Overall, I liked this book, it actually gives an example of what true love is - willing to make sacrifices for those you love.
Two boisterous boys, Trent and Max, playing under a forgotten boatshed overhear plans to rob a bank on the day of the big Australian horse race. Although their father does not believe them, his girlfriend takes an interest. The boys record the next meeting, scaring their father and exciting Gemma. She forms a plan of her own that dramatically changes the lives of both the gang leader and the chief of police. Jack sees the bank heist as a desperate effort to save his severely ill wife, Candace, who needs major heart surgery soon. The story has a couple of surprising turns, but the news always comes up with slight variations on every anniversary of the heist. All the main characters end up traveling to Europe at various times, in pursuit of the details. Even the ending has a surprising twist! I loved this story and would dearly love to read a sequel.
Double Take is story about a man, Jack Rich, who loves his wife dearly. But she is sick and needs an operation or else she won't live much longer. He calls in his old friends from when he was a teenager. They all owe him....big time. What for? You will have to read the story to find that out. Anyway, he wants to rob a bank to get the money for his wife's operation. They will rob the bank on a certain holiday when the streets won't be so crowded. Jack has planned this for a while. What he didn't plan on was a couple of young boys hearing about their plans. The boys even record them talking about it! Can Jack and the gang pull of the robbery? Will the boys parents spoil their plans? Will Jack's wife get the operation she needs to live? Read the story to find out.
I absolutely LOVED this book ... I did not want to put it down!!!! The author cleverly draws you into the plans of the characters. There is a satisfying element of suspense and even though you feel it's all "done and dusted" by half way through, you know there's way more to come! There is a lovely balance of good and bad people and I felt torn at times in liking and disliking them. The character Jack in particular, does a bad thing but for a completely altruistic reason ..... I could not hate him for that. Tiffany on the other hand .......!!!! Go ahead and read it .... I hope you love it as much as I did!!!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end... Ms. Talbot has written a great read that holds the readers' interest and leaves you wanting more.... the twists in the plot keep you guessing and just when you think you had it figured out all along - well, another twist... the characters were really brought to life and made you the reader feel like you were part of the dialogue... further into the book it seemed as though it was a wrap, but up popped another chapter and opened some more new doors... and a few more chapters! Overall a terrific read! Looking forward to her next book(s) !!!
When Jack's beloved wife, Candice, needs an expensive operation he hatches a plan and enlists his old high school friends and his brother. The plan seems fool-proof, but two boys who play beneath the abandoned boat shed that the conspirators use as a meeting place, hear about the upcoming bank heist. When they tell their dad about the robbers, his girlfriend, Gemma, comes up with a plan to rob the robbers. This story is full of interesting characters and interesting plot twists. Keep reading to find out who will come out on top and who will get their just desserts. This is a great book for crime story lovers of all ages.
What would you do if you lost your job, then your house and the love of your life is terminal??
Jackson Rich, felt that he was at his wits' end and made the difficult decision to gather together his old gang to plan a robbery!
Add 30yr veteran Police Detective Steel to the formula and you have a well written novel, which will test your values and keep you enthralled to the end.
I recommend Double Take to GoodRead readers, I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did.
Found this one at the local Op Shop, saw Kendall was an Aussie writer then got to meet her at SheKilda3 in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago. I really enjoyed this novel, set in Brisbane (where I happened to live for 6 months or so in the early 80's) the localities in the story were familar to me and made it easy to "see" the action. What a crazy ride.... kids playing where they shouldn't, a dying wife, Melbourne Cup Day bank robbery by a band of unlikely robbers and a greedy woman make for a very interesting read.
One of the best novels I have read. Two young boys playing overhear a group planning a bank robbery. No one believes them at first until they tape a conversation with the planning of the bank heist. The boys Father has a live in girl friend, Gemma uses the boy's tape recording by altering it and giving it to the police. She plans on stealing the money from the robbers. Many twists and name changes to keep you interested. I highly recommend this work to anyone that likes a crime mystery. I finished this in one day. I did not want to stop reading. I was given a copy to give an honest review.
One Messed Up Bank Heist! What an intriguing story! This book has a rather slow build-up, at times even painful. Then it began to pick up the pace. Before even the 35% mark, I was having trouble setting it down. All of the characters and their motivations seemed to be spot-on. I know that I will be wrestling this in my mind for a while. The book reads like a good movie. By the end, I was seeing famous actors in all of the parts – which I never do. With the plot twists and ins and outs, this could be quite the blockbuster! I highly recommend this book and this author.
This crime thriller was well written and had more turns and twists than a roller coaster. When two young boys overhear some criminals planning a bank robbery, no one believes them. They tape the conversation and their father's girl friend alters it as she plans to steal the money from the bank robbers. If you like thrillers or crime novels, you'll love this book. I read an advance copy and voluntarily chose to review it.
Detective Steel faces a problem. He must allow a bank robbery to happen in order to catch the robbers. Jackson Rush faces a conundrum. Does he rob a bank so he can buy his terminally ill wife a few more months? An interesting setup that's ramped-up by a cast of somewhat well-developed characters, who lead the plot into a twist I did not see coming. And I am very hard to surprise. I received this book from eBook Discovery. This is my honest review.
This book definitely was fast past and jaw dropping amazing. It was filled with action, keep you on the edge of your seat, can't believe that happened moments. I was hooked from the very first chapter to the very last. I couldn't get enough. Kendall Talbot knows how to get your blood pumping with the action and excitement. I definitely can't wait to read more. This was such a stellar read that it left me wanting more.
I voluntarily agreed to read this book and this is my honest review.
To say I enjoyed this book would be an understatement. From the beginning to the end, I found myself identifying with the characters and becoming fully enmeshed in the story to the point of not wanting to put the book down because I want to see where this story was going next. The multiple story twists kept me engaged until the very end. I received a copy of Double Take for signing up to the author’s email list and chose to provide this review.
