Once again the Battlecruiser Alamo is launched on an expedition deep into unknown space, but instead of a farewell party Fleet Captain Daniel Marshall faces an assassin's blade wielded by a mysterious assailant. With an unknown enemy facing them from beyond the frontier of the Triplanetary Confederation, one armed with a weapon capable of destroying a starship with a single shot, a deserted space station holding a deadly secret from an alien past, and a disgraced midshipman added to the crew at the last minutes, this time even the veteran starship might at last have met its match...
Aces High is the thirteenth book in the Battlecruiser Alamo series.
This book marks the start of an interesting new adventure for the Alamo. I really enjoyed this story and I think it is probably the best so far.
However, the thing that annoys me about these books is that they are often so close to being excellent, but there are always little faults that would have been so easy to correct if the author just took a little more care. I should add that a few of the books have had some really major faults.
While reading I jotted down a few examples of the tiny little things that irritated me, but overall these didn’t detract so much that they spoiled my enjoyment of the book.
"Battlecruiser Alamo: Aces High," Book 13 in the never ending, never satisfying, never edited, never proofread, sputters and staggers along. The shallow storyline has been pulled, teased, and stretched to the point there is no substance left. This episode is devoid of excitement or entertainment.
The "Alamo," embarks on another long term exploratory voyage, with most of the previous crew and a few additions. Insubordination, midshipmen (academy cadets) who tell off superior officers, and a new hybrid race of humans, all come along for a shallow ride. Happen upon a damaged space station with casualties, discover hostile spacecraft, engage in lame space missile battles, secure station, rescue survivors from planet, find ancient artifacts, defeat hostiles, and end eBook with pretentious pontificating.
The eBook author loves certain words, repeatedly: erstwhile, whilst, and indeed, are but a few. He writes as if he was an effete 19th century British poof at a public school. It's bad SciFi and bad fiction period. The editing and proofreading for the 13th consecutive eBook by the author, are again failures.
If not for its availability via Kindle Unlimited and its monthly fee, I would never pay such a poorly conceived and constructed eBook.
This was another excellent book by Mr Tongue. I have read this series from the first book and every time I get a new one , I read right through it. I love the space action and the storyline. I hope you can continue with this series for a long long time. Thank you for letting me enjoy your hard work Mr Tongue. I suggest this series to all that love space series, at least give book one a try and I bet you will get the rest of the series.
After all of the books, there doesn't seem to be a follow-up. Unless a new series is started. This book seems to have wrapped up the saga nicely. No cliffhanger ending. However, the adventure has lots of opportunity to continue. I'm waiting for the next series, to continue into the unknown.
I have been a fan of science fiction all of my life and can only say that no series has captivated me as much as Richards "Alamo" has since Edgar Rice Boroughs when I was a teenager. The imagination, characters and adventure are terrific and I cannot wait to follow the adventure in the next instalment. Congratulations Mr. Tongue and thank you... Colin
I can't describe how much I have enjoyed the journey the Battlecruiser Alamo has been on. Richard's mastery of character development, plot, and pacing never disappoint. I can't wait for the NEXT book. HURRY IT UP ALREADY!
