DS Lasser #8

Bad Self

Rate this book
In a world of mistrust death is never far away.

When Lasser is attacked by a vicious gang he is convinced that his life will end in the deserted shopping centre. However, seconds later his attackers are dead and Lasser is left with the puzzle as to why he should be left alive amidst so much blood and carnage.
As others begin to die and the streets are crawling with armed officers, Lasser is left chasing a shadow, a shadow from the past, a man who has saved his life before and yet kills with such skill and abandon.
In this crucible of hate and mistrust, Lasser discovers the people you should be able to trust are often the ones who will stick the knife in as they try to make a name for themselves at any cost.
With the body count rising, Lasser finds himself trying to do his job with enemies on every side. All taking place against the backdrop of Waltzers and glaring lights as the fairground comes to town, bringing with it a sadistic psychopath who has a plan of his own.

Rob Roughley lives in the North West of England (God's coal bunker, the land of the wedding cake made by placing three meat pies on top of one another and whippets on lengths of string)
He is the author of eight crime/thriller novels featuring DS Lasser. The novels are set between the run down streets of a northern town and the beautiful yet desolate west Pennine moors.
If you love your crime fiction crammed with square jawed heroes driving flash cars and glorious women who shimmer with inner light, then the DS Lasser novels are not for you.
However, if you prefer your characters to be flawed, with a sprinkling of dandruff and old acne scars, the plots to be laced with dark humour, then give them a try.

Shocking proof reading

A good story completely ruined by shockingly awful proof reading. Words missing, punctuation missing or incorrect and muddled time lines:
Ice cream van tinkles past but it’s the middle of the night.
Previous books state that he had made love to a previous girlfriend in the Ikea chair but now, it’s stored upstairs because Medea, his last girlfriend chose it

Best series I’ve ever read

I absolutely love this book series. I always feel like I’ve watched a film after finishing each book as each character is so vivid and colourful. I absolutely adore Bannister. I laugh out loud many times throughout. The relationship between him and Lasser is priceless. Each book is something different. I can’t wait to read the next.

Another great read

I love the DS Lasser series, I’ve been binge reading! The books are page turners, great story telling you really feel like you know the characters. I’ll be very sorry to get to the last in the series!

Well written, over the top story.

Really it should be three stars. The story manipulates the reader into sympathizing with a killer . Sort of like Dexter, but as a contract killer. A substantial percentage of England's annual murder count in one town. Author can do better.

And another one in double top

Once again the story flowed well, kept me wanting to keep turning the page ( or in my case ) flicking my thumb to move the screen on. Underlying story keeps ticking along and plenty of twists and turns to enjoy. Thanks once again to the author.

I have read all of Robin Roughley's books and they never disappoint me. The action starts at page one and never stops.
Once I pick up one of his books I know that nothing will make me put it down.
As I read I find myself transported to the area, recognising so many of the places he refers to.
His characters are so real. None of them are perfect but that's what endears them to me. It amazes me that someone can create such a diverse character as Plymouth, a man who is ruthlessly evil but has such a kind streak running through him.
I have just purchased "Crave", the 9th book in the series and can't wait to start reading.

Book 8
BAD SELF.
As in every book in this series it is fast, and action packed from the very 1st page until the last page.
When Lasser gets attacked on his way home from a retirement party, the killings kick off. He is saved from the attack by a man from his past. Plymouth is he a bad guy or a good guy, you decide.
Lasser is left trying to find Plymouth and also battle against guys that have been brought in from Manchester. You will love this book and hopefully the next book will be here shortly.

This book starts when DS lasser leaves a retirement party early to make his way home alone part way into the journey he is mugged by four thugs as he is trying to defend himself all hell breaks out and the four thugs are blasted to death so the story begins following a would be fair ground worker a solicitor and the mysterious Plymouth who plays a major part in this plot i won't give any spoilers but I won't be able to use my hoover without thinking of this book looking forward to book nine now

Excellent series

Not for the faint of heart, but Lasser & company are well written reading.

It's got more bad language/sex than I care for, but it's part and parcel of the series.

While you can read each book as a stand-alone, you'll be missing pieces of Lasser's personal life, as well as connective characters, which makes all the difference in their story line.

I recommend you start at the beginning. You'll get hooked.

This author gets better with each book, DS Lasser and Odette his sidekick take on the dark forces of Plymouth and others. We have a love interest in this one, though I did lose count of the number of bodies scattered about, busy undertakers in Wigan. Keep up the good work, for me this is the best in the series to date.

Another great book from the DS Lasser series

Another great book by Robin that develops further the characters from the previous books. DS Lasser solving new crimes and keeping the readers smiling with his attitude to work, love and life.

Lost a star due to lack of editing

This is another unpolished jewel in rough shape. If the author would just hire a skilled proofed or a real editor, this series could be truly outstanding.
