Summer Scribes: A Central College Anthology

Rate this book
Welcome to Summer Scribes, the third anthology created by the students of Central College's Creative Writing and E Publishing course.

Here, you will find seven short stories, plus a compendium of poems, from seven promising authors, all from Nottingham. The anthology is sumptuously diverse, both in genre and amongst the creative team, with something inside these pages for everyone.

Readers will find contemporary fiction, travel, romance, revenge, humour and more. Summer Scribes also includes poetry that is both raw, confrontational and sometimes simply laugh out loud funny, calling to mind such luminaries as Pam Ayres and the dark visions of Sylvia Plath.

Poetry is making more and more of a comeback and the movement is well represented in this anthology.

Summer Scribes is an anthology written by seven students from the Creative Writing and E-Publishing Course at Central College, Nottingham. All proceeds from the book are being donated to the Alzheimer's Society, which is an amazing idea in itself. Thank you so much!

The anthology is a mix of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. There's some wonderfully strong prose in the book and I feel that the writers involved will go far. My attention was held the entire way through and I'm so happy that courses such as this are running. For me, stand out pieces would be “No Ordinary Day”, “The Perfect Stranger”, and “Can of Worms”. If you want pieces to make you think, pick up one of these books. In the course of a few stories, you can go from sheer shock to laughter and back to shock. Amazing work and I hope to hear more from these writers in the coming months and years.

Sometime the speed time passes shocks me and I was surprised to discover that although I bought this book in 2015 I somehow missed reading it then (it was an extraordinarily busy year!) and although it’s been on my to-be-read list I’ve only just got to it. What a treat it was though!

No Ordinary Day by Clare Stevens

This is a very well written story of a wife who has suspicions about her husband and what happens next. Excellent.

Red, Blue, Black by Beth O’Neill

A therapist starts working with a boy who intrigues her but little does she know his drawings mean more than at first appears. Well written and sinister.

The Perfect Stranger by Nina S Chung

This is all about Eveie, a young woman from Lincoln who is curious and looking for adventure. She spots a particularly attractive bike and decides to contact its owner, the old-fashioned way. Lovely story.

Yunnan Adventure by Lynne Morley

This is a wonderfully written and fascinating account of the author’s travels around an unexplored part of China and I absolutely loved reading it. The amount of detail was just right to make it interesting and absorbing – great job!

Shameless Virtue by Ambica G

This is a sad story about domestic abuse, unhappy marriages and keeping up appearances, but I very much enjoyed the delicious twist at the end which was very well done.

Can of Worms by Sarah Wilson

This is a well written and clever story that starts out being one thing and ends up being something else entirely. Craig is being watched in a cell when he is joined by Ray who starts tormenting him, the sad tale developing as the truth is revealed.

Personal Statement by Suzan Dickinson

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the personal statement Becky was writing. Illuminating in places and funny in others it really was in the voice of a 6th Form College student and very good. I liked the positive outcome of the exercise too, well thought through.

Poetry

There was a really enjoyable poetry section in this book too with poems written by Suzan Dickinson Lynne Morley, Sarah Wilson, Beth O’Neill and Clare Stevens.

Summer Scribes, an anthology of stories, non-fiction and poetry by students of Central College, Nottingham is a hauntingly beautiful compilation. Suzan Dickinson, Sarah Wilson, Nina S. Chung, Lynne Morley, Ambica G, Clare Stevens and Beth O'Neil are young people who all show great promise. There are some stunning works here that are thought provoking little treasures wrapped up into an enticing package.

I can appreciate that the proceeds to this endeavor goes to the Alzheimer's Society. A worthy cause, in deed. Well done. I have read both Pieces of Eight and Ten Revelations and this is an exciting addition.

Summer Scribes is imaginative and engrossing. And besides it has some killer poetry. Beautiful! This moved me very much.

Quote from Shameless Virtue

“It was a flattering action and though I feigned innocence, I loved it. It was a drug that deeply consumed me. He knew I was smitten because I was clumsy despite myself in his presence. I was going to have a dream life with a wonderful man, who had a great future and no tags attached.”
