One of the best m/m manga series I've ever read. The story starts out when a young man name Izumi get's mistaken for a male escort with the same name. I know this sounds ridiculous, but this is manga so it's not the craziest thing I've ever heard. Izumi considered himself heterosexual before this one night encounter but rethinks things when he realizes he enjoyed it. The other man, Katsura, decides to court Izumi with quite a bit of resistance but Izumi eventually admits his feelings. Their story is by no means wrapped up in this volume however and is touched on occasionally in the later volumes. Later in the series you also discover over couples, especially my favorite Reiji and Naoya <3, and they are all adorable. The stories are mostly drama but they are some of the more realistic relationships I've seen in manga. I'd definitely recommend this series to anyone who reads in the m/m genre.
Although, a quick side note, the art in this takes some getting used to. However the story is so good you don't notice after a while.
Classic manga and I feel like we are universes apart. So Mills & Boons-ish. Not okay with the plot and how the cool guy behaved. Not continuing with the series. 1996.... Wow.
In this case, the four stars are for the series as a whole - I'd rate this book with three stars.
I'm pretty sure I stumbled across this series pretty early on in my manga reading "career", but for some reason I never actually read it. It's possible I was put off by the fact that it doesn't focus on one pairing, or because people said that the artwork wasn't to everybody's taste.
In either way, I'm very glad I finally read it. It's not perfect, but it was still very enjoyable to read. Since I didn't care too much for the first pairing, I wasn't sad that the series wasn't focused on them alone. I didn't care for all pairings equally (and to be honest, my favourite pair only got one volume), but the quality of the writing is consistent, and I liked that I could spend this much time with the characters. I admit that for a long series like that I make allowances I wouldn't make for shorter ones, but it's like when you watch a tv show in one go - for me, that makes it easier to forget about the bad stuff and just enjoy the stuff I like.
That said, Love Mode has a fair amount of angst, but it has a lot of very sweet and touching moments, too. I'm glad I read it.
I love this series. Beautiful art and compelling love stories. Readers beware: this is yaoi, which means that the love stories are all between men and other men. This first one is about a high school boy who is mistaken for an escort by a man hooking up with a stranger through a dating service. Gosh that sounds so utterly disgusting... But people, it's a graphic novel for crying out loud, it's not real-life stuff. I went with it and really enjoyed watching the misunderstanding resolve itself and the young man who until that point thought of himself as "normal" very reluctantly realizing and accepting that he had feelings for this older man. I've read the whole series and hugely enjoyed it, especially the plot involving these two. It's also a much lighter read than the subsequent volumes, since the two characters themselves are more easygoing with less baggage from their pasts weighing them down.
This is a long series which starts with focusing on two couples and then expands from their lives to others they know. Its a very moving and in-depth series which isn't typical for most BL manga. Most BL manga have 1 or 2 volumes at most to handle their plotlines but Love Mode gets much more time to deal with a wide array of situations. Everything is handled decently and its very entertaining but filled with drama. The situations aren't exactly very original but the way they're handled and how didn't make me irritated to see them appear. The characters have growth throughout the series which is a great thing to see in a BL manga series.
Typical age-gap story with nice, older seme and tsundere-like teenage uke, but I love the execution of this story. Shimizu-sensei really do knows that she was writing a homosexual relationship and stumble there without jumping into rape or forced-sex bandwagon. Well, it seems like that, at first, but that because Takamiya was mistaking Izumi for a host he asked and thought that Izumi's unwillingness to have sex is because he was acting as a good, typically-japanese host (yea, I love how Shimizu-sensei playing in japanese stereotype of 'women' in bed so nicely). But in the end, the resolution is nice and sweet.
It may not have the best drawings of all times but it certainly has all that matters : expressive drawings, engaging romance, well-rounded and very likable characters, interesting dynamics, comedy, drama, hot and sometimes kinky sex, host club, dark past and simply... PLOT !
After reading this one, I tended to find other mangas of that genre pretty cliché, shallow and overdone.
In a word : not the perfect manga but one that you'll remember and cherish.
I have read 1-9 in this series so far and so this review covers 1-9. This is one of the best yaoi series I have read. I am defintely going to carry on with collecting the rest of the series as it hasn't let me down yet. I like all of the characters and the stories are all great in their own way. The first book is a little slow but book 2 picks things up very well. Highly recommended to lovers of Yaoi! I wasn't disappointed!
A boy gets mistaken for a rent boy, but gradually falls for the man who 'hired' him.
This is actually better than it sounds. If you like older man/younger boy romance you'll definitely want to check it out. Artwork's not too bad, its fairly sexy, but there's enough character and emotional build to make this work.
The somewhat manipulative owner of the escort service is a great character. Hope to see more of him in subsequent volumes.
Ahhh, Love Mode! What a great manga. I read it ages ago. It's a simple story of mistaken identity and ensuing awkwardness, which of course leads to typical yaoi hijinks. If you like yaoi, you have got to check this one out! Definitely worth the read. :)
I gave five stars to volume 2, and I feel inclined to give this first volume five stars too. I did find it a thoroughly engaging read. That's not to say the rape scenes aren't problematic conscience-wise. But I think you immerse yourself in a kind of fantasy world and instead of seeing it for what it actually is, you imagine yourself in this character's shoes and picture yourself being more consensual, secretly longing to be taken advantage of in this way by someone so gorgeous and mature and caring.
This manga is a product of its time, made in the mid 90s. It depicts the romance of a man and a high school student, after the man unknowingly assaults him because of a misunderstanding. Despite that I liked this more than I thought I would. The end of this volume has a good message of loving the person you're with regardless of their gender. That feels ahead of its time, so I appreciate that. I also love the art in this series. The 90s style with the big hands and long chins really does something for me. This isn't a series I really recommend, but I had a good time with it.
I read the first few volumes a few years ago but the young age of the characters made me uncomfortable and I dropped the series. I'm a big fan of the other series by this author (Ze) although again there are some youngish parts that came later in the book that I had to skip over.
Didn’t finish and have no interest. First story was no me gusta, 2nd story was no me gusta, third story was what got it a two but also what made me stop.
High schooler Izumi is surprised to receive a call from a friend he hasn’t spoken to in awhile, Konno. Konno tells him that a friend has asked to meet Izumi, and offers to set him up on a blind date. He says the friend is older and good-looking. What’s not to like? Izumi jumps at the chance. Following instructions, he arrives at the meeting place and waits, wondering what the mystery woman looks like, anticipating the date that is to come. While he waits, he notices a man standing near to him collapses and is taken away by ambulance. He picks up the single red rose the man dropped, and continues to wait. When a voice speaks his name, he eagerly looks up to see what his date looks like, only to be confronted by the face of… a man? What is going on here?
The man’s name is Takamiya, and he seems pleased with Izumi, and says he is looking forward to their day together. Izumi tries to explain there’s been some mistake, but when Takamiya mentions horses, he catches the younger man’s attention. Real horses? And thus their day together begins. During dinner, Izumi drinks a little too much and doesn’t remember leaving the restaurant. He wakes to find himself in a strange bed. But why is he naked? Why is Takamiya naked? What is going on here?
After they have sex, Takamiya tries to offer Izumi money. The incensed teenager yells at him, and that is when Takamiya realizes there has been a case of mistaken identity. But he can’t undo what has been done. Poor Izumi passes out again, and when he wakes, he is in his own bed, thank goodness. But when he goes to find his mother, he finds Takamiya in the kitchen and his mother gone shopping! Apparently, since Takamiya brought Izumi home, she trusts him? What the heck?
Thus an unusual relationship begins. Despite the fact that he knows he isn’t gay, Izumi finds that he does enjoy spending time with Takamiya, and sometimes he even finds him attractive. What does that mean? Things go from strange to worse when he meets Takamiya’s friend, Aoe Reiji, who owns the club where the actual escort he was to meet works. Aoe clearly does not think highly of Izumi and calls him a brat. When Takamiya takes Izumi away for golden week to a resort, Izumi is excited, until he learns that the place is actually Aoe’s, and that man has no compunction about just walking into a room without knocking first.
This series first came out in 1996, and I think I read it for the first time then. So, there are things to be taken into consideration before you rush to judgment. First, although Izumi is sixteen, that is the age of consent in Japan. Takamiya and Aoe are 28, but that is not considered inappropriate there either. Then there is the issue of dubious consent. That was a big thing back then, not sure about now, as I don’t read as much yaoi as I once did. However, I think it was considered to be okay if the couple ends up together and in love, that the ending excuses the means. But if you are triggered by dubious consent, you might want to reconsider reading this series. I’m not saying I think it’s right, just that it is what it is.
That being said, I love these books, and have read them a couple of times already, although this is my first time reviewing them. Keep in mind, also, as you read, that attitudes toward gay people were still often derogatory, so take Izumi’s comments with a grain of salt and remember he is just becoming aware of his own sexuality. Plus he’s sixteen.
Takamiya is sweet and gentle and ever patient. He will need that patience with Izumi, who is young and hot-headed and impulsive. They do balance each other very well. Aoe comes across as something of an a**, especially with the stunt he pulls on Izumi, but I know he becomes more human as the series continues. All in all, I think this series stands the test of time, which is why I am reading it again. I do highly recommend it if you enjoy reading gay romance.
Lalu setelahnya aku coba karyanya yg terbaru setelah ZE, yaitu Kachou Fuugetsu.
Well, stlh intip bbrp vol terakhir sih, kualitas gambarnya makin bagus...hampir mirip dgn yg ZE.
I loved Love Mode, and volume 1 is probably my favorite. Sadly, it's out of print and hard to get hold of.
Love Mode seems really different from contemporary Boys Love manga. It shines with an idealistic attitude toward love, the idea that your perfect prince may come along and find you, even if he may not be all that perfect.
I just adore Takamiya, who is very gentle and also very comfortable in his own skin, even if he does have a dorked-out 90s hair style! :D
This was the first Yaoi I ever read. And I still loved reading it the much as I did the first time.
Izumi is mistaken for a gay escort when he mistakenly picks up a rose dropped on the floor by the real escort. He decides to spend the day with Takamiya anyway as he's been stood up and has nothing better to do. They go horse riding, have some dinner and a have a little to much to drink and before you know it, Izumi is naked in bed with Takamiya.
I didn't think about it much at the time but re-reading this now. Takamiya has taken a drunk high school kid to bed and taken advantage of him which I'm pretty sure would be considered rape in the UK. In Takamiya's defence he thought Izumi was a whore, playing a virgin, not sure that we can excuse the high school part though!
After the mix up is explained, Takamiya decides that he still likes Izumi and hangs around withhim whenever he can. Izumi is now struggling with his feelings and even his mates entire water sports porn collection can't excite him.
In the meantime Takamiya befriends Izumi's mum and she leaves him in charge of her son while she goes to visit her husband. Way to go mum! Lets leave a strange man with your child! Thankfully since the misunderstanding at the start, Takamiya has been a perfect gentleman and the love story becomes really sweet as it grows.
In this volume we also meet the star of the next book, Aoe. The owner of the Gay B&B escort agency who has a habit of walking in on Takamiya & Izumi at the wrong time.
This was simple and drama free. Izumi is picked up by Katsura, who thinks Izumi is an escort. Katsura is gay, Izumi is straight. Izumi is simple and childish, so he goes along with Katsura on this date. Not much of Katsura's character is revealed, he just thinks Izumi is cute. They have sex at the end of their date and Izumi is questioning his sexuallity, he watches straight porn but it has no effect on him but he claims to hate homosexuals. I didn't really like the relationship, Izumi hates what Kasura is but gives into him anyway. I liked Aoe, Katsura's friend, he was more realistic and forced Izumi to be less wishy-washy.
