Bought this in Long Lake, interested in seeing one of the earliest books about the Adirondack region. Was expecting more of the town's early history. This book was written by a preacher who went on missions in the Adirondacks, and much of it focuses around that. There's a good amount about setting up a church and raising money for bibles and religious instruction. It's easy to see the sincerity of Todd's faith, but it leaves the reader wanting a bit. There is some fine romantic-era description of the wilds in the second half of the book. It's neat to see the language of the era and how it focused more on painting pictures with words then what we have today. But all told, the book felt a bit lacking.

The book Long Lake by John Todd is an account of his journeys to and from long lake in the mid 19th century. When reading the description I believed the book was more about Long Lake then the establishment of a church there. The word sabbath must have graced every page of the book. Knowing know that the book was about the establishment of a congregation and a church, I would not have read this book. I would only recommend this book to someone who appreciates classic books or too someone who would like to read about sabbath and church. Overall, I did not enjoy this book due to the bombardment of sabbath and church.
