Still reeling from a shocking revelation, guardian trainee Calla Larkenwood finds the threads of her world unraveling further when she’s accused of a horrifying crime she didn’t commit: A deadly magical disease has entered the Guild, threatening to wipe out every guardian—and someone is intent on framing Calla for it. With the Guild Council focusing their investigation on her instead of searching for the real criminal, Calla watches her dream of becoming a guardian rapidly slipping away. Time is running out, and as the lines between good and bad, right and wrong, begin to blur, whom can she turn to for help?
Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, a young science graduate named Rachel found that the real world wasn't a place she wanted to inhabit all the time. So she decided to escape into the magical realms that had occupied her mind since childhood.
Armed with a vivid imagination, Rachel spends her days conjuring up fantastical worlds filled with adventure, romance, and plot twists, where readers can escape the real world along with her.
Rachel lives in Cape Town, South Africa, with her husband, two little wildlings, and three fur-babies.
Read the whole book last night! WAS SO GOOD I love Calla a lot and I really love how a certain someone has changed and come back into the story as I loved that person in book one! ( well the start of book one )
I'm a massive fan of this series and I enjoyed every single minute of reading about Calla and her adventures and... well, misadventures. She's a really great character and I'm hoping that she'll get the justice she deserves. The palette of supporting characters is really interesting and definitely contributes to Calla's story. Chase... is Chase. I'm warming up to him but it's a bit hard to completely believe him again. What I do respect is that he's trying to move on from the mistakes he's made but still owning up to them.
My problem of sorts is that I'm not feeling whatever is happening between him and Calla. I like them separately but somehow they are not working for me when they're together. Maybe the next book in the series will prove me wrong.
Ryn and Violet still shined just as brightly as background characters and I love seeing them prosper and enjoy their family life.
AHHHHHH Rachel Morgan you beautiful genius, I am in love with Calla and Chase and you should just keep writing more of them as fast as possible because I'm obsessed.
A Faerie's Revenge continues with Calla coming to terms with Chase's secret. While she struggles with her feelings and thoughts, some strange things have been happening around Creepy Hollow and Calla -unsurprisingly- finds herself in the middle of things.
It took me a while to get into the book and at first I was a bit confused as to where everything was heading. Eventually everything did make sense though and everything was tied together fantastically. I absolutely loved Chase's storyline in this book and what we learned about him. After finding out about his secret it made him a lot more likable again. Something I'm still a bit unsure about is the age difference between Calla and Chase. Calla addresses this herself in the book - 10/11 years (is that right?) is quite a difference. I still ship them though. I just can't help myself.
Once again, another great book that had me screaming at my kindle multiple times - either in despair, excitement or shock.
Still reeling in the aftermath of the revelation of Chase’s true identity, Calla is hurt and lonely and trying very, very hard to move on and forget all about him -- to just focus on her guardian training. Unfortunately, easier said than done. Especially when Vi & Ryn are pestering her for information about him. Especially when faeries start getting sick with a mysterious illness, and she suspects Chase’s involvement. Especially when she herself is framed for causing the illness and she suddenly finds herself with no one else to turn to.
While some series lose steam the longer they get, the Creepy Hollow series is one that gets progressively better and better with every book, effectively utilizing its previously established history and building in intensity. While it’s fast-paced and well-plotted with lots of action and set in a wonderfully conceptualized world, the real strength to these novels lies in its fantastic character and relationship development. Calla in particular is just very well done. While suffering a horrible childhood trauma at the hands of Zell, after seeing the kinds of things that would make one lose faith in humanity (or whatever the faerie equivalent of that idea would be), she is still an optimist and an idealist. And Calla flounders a bit as her optimism and idealism are seriously tested in this novel.
Chase is also extremely well-developed. He is a character I wasn’t sure I wanted to like, but darn it… I do. I can’t help it. While Calla is most definitely my favorite character in this second half of the series, I have to say that Chase’s journey is probably the most compelling. His history and backstory... well, let’s just say he presents a bit of a conundrum. He’s black and white, and all the shades of gray in between.
Speaking of which, I absolutely love the themes of redemption, atonement and morality that play out throughout this book. The continuing idea idea that the world is made up of all different shades of gray, and that while one must acknowledge existence of darkness in the world and in one’s self, a person must choose to either get mired down in those shadowy places or to choose the light -- the brighter colors of life. As Calla continues on with her guild training, she’s learning that things are rarely as straightforward, cut-and-dry as she once thought; that in reality it can be a bit more complicated than “good guys” and “bad guys.” By meeting Chase, by recognizing areas in which t he Guild fails or lacks, her worldview that’s been shaped by her idolization of the Guild as a moral center begins to crack and reshape. Just love these themes that Rachel is weaving through Calla’s story.
Overall, riveting, romantic and enchanting (with an ending that almost killed me), A Faerie’s Revenge is an excellent next installment to this fantastic series.
Thank you, Rachel Morgan, for an advanced reader's copy of A Faerie's Revenge! From my love of the other Creepy Hollow books I knew I would love this story. I knew I would love the fabulous new magical world building. I knew I'd love the characters, and especially I knew I couldn't wait to continue Calla's and Chase's stories.
But I never expected to fall so in love with the all the unexpected, beautiful subplots. Sure, this book is about a magical fantasy world with amazing faerie characters that have some of the coolest, most imaginative magic that reminds me of the creativity found in the Harry Potter series. Seriously! Such a fun imaginative world!!
But it's so much more. This book is a beautiful story about family, love, redemption, second chances, forgiveness, self-discovery, and hope that no matter what you've done or been in the past, you can change and make a difference in the future. I loved it! It makes me happy to find fantastic book treasures such as these stories. Rachel, you rock! Thank you!
This is such an amazing book. It is well written, flows smoothly and is easy to read. The imagery is so vivid you can picture every scene. The characters, their emotions and the experiences they go through are well depicted.
Once I started this book I couldn't put it down. It kept me captivated from the first page through the last. The first 3 books in the series were Violet's story, and this book is the second of Calla's story.
I love learning more about the characters as the series continues. I highly recommend this book to those who love Fae books. The books do need to be read in order to understand what is going on.
I picked up my first Rachel Morgan Creepy Hollow book because of the cover. I've stayed ever since because of the stories. The whole series (and all of her books) are so fresh and true. She never strays into tropes, I never feel as if she is simply retelling story already told a thousand times by other authors. She writes true characters, with honest conflicts, and I love traveling through the book with them to see what happens.
A Faerie's Revenge is no different. Both Chase and Calla are trying to overcome things in their past. Their interactions with each other are genuine, and I never felt like the author was coming up with twists simply to keep them apart. Their issues are real, and their reactions to each other feel true.
I love the world that Rachel Morgan has created in Creepy Hollow. I wish I could go visit, though I don't think I'm kick-butt enough to survive.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys great characterization, real relationships (romantic and otherwise), all surrounded with a touch of magic.
This novel is part of a series, and if you're truly going to understand the conflict, I highly recommend reading the series in order. Believe me, you won't regret it. The whole series is readable, and very re-readable - which is the highest recommendation I can make.
Novel is clean, with no objectionable scenes or language.
I received a free copy of the book for my review (my first time I can say that! And with one of my favorite authors, I'm so proud!)
Loved it! A Faerie's Revenge is the fifth book in the Creepy Hollow series. The first three books are Violet's story and books four and five are Calla's. I would say that I love each book more and more but honestly I think they are all amazing and love them all equally lol.
A Faerie's Revenge is full of action and real emotion. I couldn't read it quick enough! I had to know what was going to happen next. After the way that A Faerie's Secret ended the way it did I needed some answers and I needed them fast! One of my favorite things about reading this series other than the world building is how easy the story seems to flow. Even when there is a lot happening from action to romance and betrayal, the writing never seems forced. It just flows and pieces everything together perfectly in ways that I didn't even see coming and it just astounds me. I went from loving a character, to hating them, to loving them again, and that can be a hard feat to pull off. A Faerie's Revenge rings true on so many subjects it's hard to put into words. It tells of love, true friendship, accepting yourself, betrayal, mistakes, forgiveness, the list just goes on and it just totally blows my mind. So if you haven't read this series yet , I give it my upmost recommendation for all fans of YA fantasy and fae.
** I received a digital copy of this book for review purposes. * *
Discovering Chase's secret was only the beginning for Calla Larkenwood in Rachel Morgan's A Faerie's Revenge. Calla shows a lot of growth through all she faces in this book. The dialogue between Calla and her Guardian friends often had me laughing. Certain instances in this book brought me to tears, and there is this really swoonworthy scene, but you'll have to read it for yourself. A Faerie's Revenge keeps the action high, the pace moving swiftly, and feels like a solid bridge between not only A Faerie's Secret and the next book in Calla's trilogy but also between Violet's story in Creepy Hollow 1-3 and whatever the last trilogy will be about. Rachel Morgan knows how to keep the twists coming. This novel gave me a book hangover. I didn't want it to end, and I am so looking forward to the next book. If you're a fan of the Creepy Hollow series, then you'll love A Faerie's Revenge by Rachel Morgan. And if you haven't read the books yet, then I highly recommend you to start at The Faerie Guardian and catch up.
3.5 stars. I wanted it to be four, but the writing was so uneven, fluctuating between awkwardly constructed dialogue among characters in situations that were so predictable as to almost be cliché, and the really imaginative and captivating imagery and storyline that I've come to expect from this author. I still highly recommend this series, though, despite the shortcomings of this most recent installment.
"I blink at him. A second later, a manticore drops out of the air and lands on the table. Shrieks and gasps fill the air as the manticore scrambles to its clawed lions feet and opens its mouth to emit an inhuman roar. Darius jerks out of the way and falls from his chair as as the manticor's scorpion stinger flashes forward to strike at him. He throws his hands up to release magic--- And the illusion is gone." The Faerie's Revenge, Rachel Morgan
I have been wanting to read this series for a very long time. When the chance to receive the first four books and an ARC of the fifth book came up I went for it. Thanks so much to Rachel Morgan for letting me be a part of the review tour:)
Goodreads Synopsis:
Still reeling from a shocking revelation, guardian trainee Calla Larkenwood finds the threads of her world unraveling further when she’s accused of a horrifying crime she didn’t commit: A deadly magical disease has entered the Guild, threatening to wipe out every guardian—and someone is intent on framing Calla for it. Time is running out, and as the lines between good and bad, right and wrong, begin to blur, whom can she turn to for help?
After the shocking ending to book four I immediately grabbed my copy of the fifth book and devoured it. It was everything I hoped it would be and now I'm sadly waiting for the sixth book.
With fight scenes, suspense, romance, a betrayal, and a dangerous disease spreading through the guild this book is fast paced and will keep you on your toes till the very end. Every page is full of a new twist. And that ending? Yeah can we have the next book now, please?
So in the fourth book Chase turned out to be Nate, the ex-Lord Draven. Was it just me or did nobody else see this coming? I was so surprised. I loved seeing how his character had developed. He went from goofy, lovable Nate, to the power consumed Lord Draven, to the mature, guilt filled Chase. He is such a deep character and seeing exactly what happened to him after book three was interesting. And sad. Really, really sad. Seriously chapter sixteen *tears*.
Even though Callas dream is falling apart shes still determined to catch the bad guys and stop them from harming anyone. I love Callas character. Shes so determined to see the world as a good place, and she fights to make it one. Her love for her family and the way she cares about her friends only makes her more kick butt. Seriously I need a t-shirt that says "Team Calla".
I love how Calla even after finding out his big secret, thinks that there is something missing to Chase's story. If he was so evil and still plotting to take over the world what has he been doing for the last ten years? Their relationship is so adorable *shipping them so hard*
This is definitely my favorite book in the series. If you have read the other books then you definitely need to drop everything and pick up this one.
It's kinda hard to imagine right now that I used to read mostly traditionally published books. If you look at the books I've read lately, quite a lot of them are independently published. And for me they've been just as great, maybe even greater, than every other book I've come across. Maybe they're not always mainstream, but they cater what I need and what I want right now.
And this book is a prime example of it. Calla is this amazing character, feeling a lot like myself at times. She's emotional and I love that about her. She's not that good at hiding how she feels, but she's not afraid or ashamed of her feelings either. It's admirable and heartwarming and a breeze of fresh air in a world where a lot of books thrive on characters not communicating. And once she loves and goes for something, she loves and goes for it with her entire heart.
But the true show stealer in this book was the plot. Of course, the cliffhanger of the last book was a good one, but how it all played out and where it all lead eventually was such an amazing rollercoaster. I've had so many moments where I just held my breath and kept on reading and reading. Some plot twists were quite easy to guess, especially because I've read so many book already. But the execution was brilliant and that's what eventually counts.
I also love how Morgan managed to balance the story of our new heroine with cameos of the characters we've grown to love so much in the first trilogy. It's very clearly Calla's story and everything we see of Ryn and Vi we see through her eyes. Not once do Vi and Ryn take over the story that isn't theirs and I really love that. No matter how amazing they were, this is Calla's story and I'm glad the author never forgets about it.
If the finale of this trilogy is gonna be just as epic as the one of the previous book, I'm gonna make sure to enjoy it to the fullest! I can't wait to read it next week!
After finding out the truth about the intriguing and mysterious Chase, Calla is determined to forget all about him. She throws herself into her Guardian training. However it's difficult to forget Chase when he is mentioned in most of her textbooks, he's a vital part of Creepy Hollow history AND he keeps showing up everywhere. Then, Calla is accused of spreading a disease that rapidly kills the faeries. Left with no other place or person where she can remain safe, Calla is forced to rely on Chase. I thought this book was far darker than others in the series but I absolutely loved it. For me, the Guild has always represented a place of justice and hope but that changes in this book. I especially enjoyed seeing Chase again. Unfortunately this book has an ending that left me craving more which proves my theory that Rachel Morgan's books should probably all be binge-read instead of read one at a time. This was an excellent read that I highly recommend to fans of fae, fantasy or "A Court of Thorns and Roses". This book is a relatively quick read that is interesting with characters that are real and funny.
This book continues with Calla finding out more about Chase and who he really is. I love the whole chapter of his back story it really helped me come to terms with who is and i felt so terrible for his whole journey and the guilt that he has to carry around and how he truly trying not to be so consumed by what has happened to him. Like Calla says he choosing the brighter colors. Their are multiple times in reading the Creepy Hallow series where my heart starts beating like crazy in fear for these characters that i have come to know and love. I screamed, i cried, i had my heart ripped out and i still keep coming back for more. This is one Fae series you can't put down and walk away from it has to be read and experienced.
I fell in love with this book cover and j was truly thankful to be selected as one of rachel Morgan arcs for her latest novel ! This my first fairy series that I ever read. And what a fantastic read it was. worthy of all five stars. This book was filed with adventure , mystery romance and laughter. From the moment I opened the first page I was completely addicted. I could picture everything like I was watching a movie and feel what the characters were feeling. I was sad when I reached the end because I needed more, thank you for allowing me to read about your amazing adventures Jodie Jm Chalker author of the bound series and book blogger book obsession23 @wordpress.com
Book 5 of creepy hollow was good, unfortunately it lacked the romance I was looking forward to. I still recommend the book, just not my favorite from the series.
This was an exciting and fantastic sequel to A Faerie's Secret that will leave you begging for the next book in the series! Rachel Morgan has done it yet again, and crafted a wonderful book that has nonstop action, adventure, and romance. Her writing is gorgeous, with every scene richly described, and the way she writes her characters...well it's safe to say that you'll fall in love with all of them even more after reading this installment in the Creepy Hollow series.
This book picks up right where we left off in A Faerie's Secret. Calla is still reeling from the shocker over Chase's identity, and she is doing everything in her power to try and forget all about him. However, that's not going so well, as basically everything she does reminds Calla of Chase. Suddenly, a mysterious illness spreads like wildfire throughout Creepy Hollow, and it spells TROUBLE for Calla. I had no idea where Ms. Morgan was going to take this book, but this went in such an amazing direction. I loved how unexpected this story was, and I never knew what was going to happen next. Many series might have become boring by now, but Ms. Morgan is an expert at storytelling, and easily sweeps you off your feet while reading this story. The story is fast-paced, but never confusing, and everything about the story is extremely well-developed. You can see how much time and effort Ms. Morgan put into creating this novel.
However, where this book truly shines is in its characters. Calla has come a remarkably long way since the previous book, and I applaud Ms. Morgan for the growth that Calla has experienced. She has never once lost her optimistic and hopeful nature. Calla wants to fix everything and never stops trying. Even though she suffers a lot of downfalls and has many crazy times, she never once stops being her determined self. Chase is also amazing in this novel. I loved him in the last book, and after the revelation of his true identity, I had no idea what to think. You honestly can't help but love him. After all of the events of his past, he is still looking for redemption. He has a way to go, but he's off to an amazing start. He has already made great strides to creating a better future for himself and the people around him, and my heart broke for him so many times.
The one thing that I love about Rachel Morgan's writing is how she reminds every reader that there is more to the world than you think. There is a recurring theme in this book of Calla realizing that the world isn't black and white. There are many gray areas, and that nothing is truly as it seems...whether that means other people or the world you live in. At the end of the day though, as Calla says, it comes down to choosing the "brighter colors in life."
I highly recommend checking this book out if you're a fan of the Creepy Hollow series. You will not want to miss out on this exciting adventure that Calla and Chase embark on, and you will never guess how it will all end. I am so excited for the next book in the series, and to see where Rachel Morgan takes the story!
As all the other previous books in the Creepy Hollow series, A Faerie's Revenge is very well written and the story never gets boring!
We meet some already-known characters from previous books but also get to know new ones. There are also many ups and downs Calla, the main character in this book, has to go through but will she manage to solve all these problems surrounding her?
All in all I really enjoyed the fifth book of this awesome series and I can't wait for the next book!!
I 100% did not expect to be as invested in this series as I am right now. It is your typical YA urban fantasy/faerie kinda book, but maybe that's just what I'm craving right now?
This isn’t exactly a NEW story. But then, there aren’t really any “new” stories, are there?
Accused of a crime she didn’t commit by the institution she belongs to, a woman goes on the run. Eventually, she joins up with a group of outlaws and ends up committing crimes with them. In doing so, she eventually uncovers.... OK, that’s enough; I don’t want to spoil it for you.
The thing is, the story is told so WELL in this case that I can’t really fault it. It’s easily the best instalment in the Creepy Hollow series so far. There’s action, there’s adventure, there’s intrigue, and there’s betrayal.
There’s even a bit of romance!
Many of the characters experience a lot of growth, and the world evolves too. Which is great, but it also means I wouldn’t recommend reading this book if you’ve not read any previous books in the series — including Books One to Three, which are the previous arc, because even those old characters grow.
I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
I LOVED this book. I wish i could give it 6 stars. The whole time I was at the edge of my seat. Calla is such an in-depth character who only wants good. It was nice to see a new side of Chase— I really like him and his back story!! Once again the writing is phenomenal and makes me feel as though I am in the story too. I can imagine everything that happens!
I’m so excited for the next book.
***SPOILERS START HERE***
Thoughts during the book:
If Chase is really Draven— then when he was saving Calla in the beginning of book 4 from underground right when she stole the bracelet, then how come he didn’t recognize Zedd, and that he didn’t kill him?
By the end of chapter 10 my guess is it is Zedd framing Calla— he was the one that said that guardians don’t actually protect people… hints his way of saying that if she was in trouble, they would just blame her instead of helping her…
I bet Chases mom has something to do with Calla disappearing. I know that Zedd is working with the undergrounders, who my guess is working with his mom.
Well that was a ridiculously fast read. Calla continues to wiffle waffle on her feelings for Chase, which is annoying. Oh it's completely understandable, given who he is and what he's done, but still annoying.
We get a bit more of our favorite power couple Vi and Rin in the best way possible. I fan girled a bit, not going to lie.
Chase continues to be the upstanding character we know he could be... and get the whole story behind, erm, his past and what made him do what he did. If this doesn't help you forgive him, I don't know what will? I still think he's boring though.
Overall a very fast read, appropriate for any age, but I'd ballpark around 13+ because you know, there is killing, bashings, betrayal, and some stabby stabby coming. I still maintain you could read Calla's trilogy by itself but the whole story, who Chase is, and the devastation he caused just makes so much more sense if you read Creepy Hollow 1-3 (Violet and Rin's story).
