At first I was confused with this one because I thought it was supposed to be about the couple from Love Mode Vol. 1 but then I realized it was about a side character from that book and I absolutely loved it. It was very sweet and I fell in love with both characters right from the start. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
The stories are actually interesting, too bad that the manga is so stereotypical. Every pairing is the same: a huge, much older, butch top and a tiny, very young, femme bottom who keeps saying no but actually means yes *sigh*
This volume tells the story of Naoya and Reiji. Naoya is a teenager lost his entire family in a car accident. He was unwanted by his foster parents and decided to support himself, but life is tough as he struggles to keep his scholarship at the private school he attends while working multiple jobs. Reiji is a wealthy man in his thirties who owns the male-for-male escort service that forms the backbone of the series. Reiji is indirectly responsible for Naoya being injured and Naoya ends up staying with him.
OK, so again, a man in his thirties being interested in a beautiful boy in his teens might seriously disgust some readers, but it's a great story for those who enjoy yaoi. I loved watching Reiji, who is so cool and aloof, reluctantly fall for the lonely, struggling Naoya. This is just the first volume about these two and the relationship is still left in the preliminary stages by the end.
I read this when it first was released in the US many years ago, and despite loving it, I was only ever able to get the first three volumes. Now I have them all, and I'm currently bed-ridden and I decided to read through them all - rather than do schoolwork.
This second volume of Love Mode is just as good as the first. This time it's Reiji's turn to find someone. I like Naoya and I feel bad for what he went through as a kid, especially seeing his brother killed so violently in the accident. What I love most about this book is that their relationship, unlike Takamiya and Izumi's, is going slow and there's really not much action in that regard. But it's sweet and real and fits with both of their personalities. I can't wait to read more of them.
My favorite pairing from the series. About Aoe Reiji, Takamiya's (of volume 1) friend and an owner of the biggest gay clubs bussiness in town. After an incident with his ex-girlfriend who left a school boy getting injured, Aoe took the boy in. Not to mention, said boy actually got quite a dark past. And well, you know where to start from there.
Naoya is my favorite character. His strong-willed and stern type is never been used as an uke type in yaoi mangas. So his character is so refreshing and out from those crying-helplessly-cute ukes we'd always had. He is a bit like Syaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura. Cutely stern, right?
Naoya is having a rough day, kicked out of school, no place to live and no money. Reiji finds his girlfriend cheating on him. They bump into each other outside a hotel. Reiji follows Naoya and sees that Naoya has no place to sleep, so he offers him the use of his couch. I like Reiji, he is kind but gruff and doesn't expect anything from Naoya. Naoya is slowly falling for Reiji but is expecting the worse because that's his life. Nothing explicit, just a single kiss. Really sweet story.
I love this manga! It gets better with every chapter you read. I love the second story, it's more dramatic and intense. The characters evolve completely, it's amazing how one person can change your life completely, (fiction) but still, in terms of the story, it's a great read, i cried a couple of times in some scenes, laughed in others, but overall a must read even if you're not into this type of manga, the story holds itself strong.
This volume is all about Reiji and Naoya meeting and their budding romance. It's hard to believe the acerbic personality of Reiji actually having a soft spot for Naoya, but he just doesn't want to show it. Hah! This their introduction story has a more somber note compared to Takamiya and Izumi story. And yes, we get to see those two again with the short at the end. My heart always goes out to Takamiya and Izumi.
I am a complete mess for this series. This one was interesting and cute, focusing on Aoe meeting someone. Takimaya and Izumi make guest appearances as the manga progresses which I found nice as I actually missed them this time around.
Perhaps five stars is rather over the top, but I just found it a thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying read. I've not read enough of this type of stuff to get bored of it yet, or to discover its unoriginality. I did find it interesting how much it reminded me of the American version of Queer as Folk, the main characters here being very much like Brian and Justin in terms of ages, appearances, lifestyles, and to a degree, their characters. But as this book was originally published in Japanese prior to the appearance of the American TV series, one has to assume that if there was any copying going on, it was the TV version which stole from the Manga, and cast it accordingly. Actually, in that light, it begins to make sense, because when I first saw the TV series I thought Gale Harold was a rather odd choice for the lead role, but now I see how he rather resembles the lead manga men, physically.
Much as I enjoyed reading this, though, I regard it as rather trivial and I can't see myself rushing out to get any more books either in this series or in the same genre. But as a sample it seems to be a perfectly good choice to have on my shelves.
CW: Death of a parent, Car Accident, kidnapping, Sexual Assault
I liked this more than the first volume. It still depicts a taboo age gap relationship, which isn't going to be for everyone. But the trauma in this book had me attached to the main character from the beginning. So, this volume was much more interesting for me.
Naoya is a young man who has lost everything, including his parents. It seems to him that winter only brings bad things, and this year is no exception when his foster father says he can’t keep him any longer. Aoe Reiji catches his cheating girlfriend in the act in the apartment they share. Despite her tears and protestations that he neglected her, he walks out even as he tells her to vacate the premises. Leaving the building, he almost collides with a young man. Just then, his now ex-girlfriend hurls a potted plant from above him. It misseds Aoe but hits the boy. Aoe takes the boy to the hospital where his older brother, Kiichi, works as a doctor.
While Aoe and his brother stand in the boy’s room and talk, another man appears who says he is the boy’s foster father. The boy is Naoya, and he tells the two men about the death of Naoya’s parents. He has come to check on him, but not take him home, unfortunately. When Naoya is ready to leave the hospital, Aoe offers to take him home. First they go by Naoya’s place of work, where Naoya finds he’s been cheated out of his paycheck. Things just seem to go wrong for him all the time. Then he goes to his apartment, only to find it’s burned up and the landlord is accusing him of causing the fire!
Aoe takes the now homeless Naoya back to his own apartment and they become roommates. Well, somewhat. Naoya is always angry and he doesn’t trust Aoe, who never reveals how he really feels at the best of times. Naoya finds Aoe to be strict, but he’s honestly just looking out for him, making sure he eats right, sleeps right, and gets to school and studies. Aoe’s brother Kiichi, the doctor, seems amused by Aoe’s interest in the boy and encourages Naoya to get Aoe to spend lots of money on him, telling the boy that his brother can afford it.
Naoya is very reluctant to trust Aoe, and he fears he is a burden to the older man. But he’s also naïve, and gets himself into a dangerous situation. Luckily, it’s at one of Aoe’s clubs, and Aoe quickly comes to the rescue. After that, Aoe hires Naoya as a companion for “Izumi”, his best escort, and he becomes friends with the lovely man, who is still recovering from surgery. But due to unfortunate circumstances, Naoya moves out, but he isn’t happy. And another Christmas has come and he’s alone…again.
This volume introduces us to Naoya, and sees the return of Aoe, who you’ll recall is Takamiya’s sometimes less-than-charming friend who was so hard on Izumi in the first book. Naoya is a boy who’s lost everything and trusts no one. Aoe puts on a hard front, but he is really sweet inside (just don’t tell him that). The two end up together (and just for the record, Aoe is the same age as Takamiya, 28, and Naoya is 17, like Izumi. If this bothers you, don’t read).
I like them as a couple, but I like Takamiya and Izumi the best. There is a bonus story about Takamiya and Izumi and Christmas. Really love this manga, wish there was an anime!
With Love Mode Vol 2 starts the arc focused on Aoe Reiji and his younger love interest, Naoya. Yuki Shimizu ratchets up the tension by heaping all kinds of bad events on poor Naoya's head, but our hearts are soothed as Naoya slowly realizes that Reiji will stick with him and make up for some of his past tragedies.
I really love the very sincere sentimentality of this volume.
When I first read this book, I remember being disappointed that it didn't follow the same couple from the first volume. Although they do get a sexy bonus section at the end!
This book follows Aoe, the owner of the B&B who we met in the last volume. He meets Naoya after his ex girlfriend throws a plant pot at his head which misses and knocks Naoya out instead. After taking Naoya to the hospital, he learns that Naoya has no where to go and invites him to stay at his place.
Both of them struggle with their feelings as although Aoe is bisexual he's not into young boys. And while Naoya doesn't seem to have a problem with the gay thing, he thinks that Aoe only likes him out of charity. So it takes a while for these two to have their first kiss and like the last volume this is another sweet love story.
Like I said above there is also a short Christmas story at the back about Takamiya & Izumi which is great because they are my favourite Love Mode couple <3
Love mode is one of my very favorite mangas. It has a very special place in my heart. But this volume... this one is the special one. I don't even know how many times in something like 8 years I've read it.
Reread in May 2025. Saw a copy at a used bookstore and felt compelled to buy it for a reread. The age gap is still crazy but the romance is so tender and sweet. Plus, the bonus couple of the first couple was so good. 3.85/5 ish
