Nice little story for Children. Newfies are such great dogs. I miss the two I have had in my life. it would be nice if Children were exposed to a Newfie so they can know how big dogs can haveh suc big hearts. they are not called the 'Gentle Giants' without a reason.

Newf is exactly the dog I dreamed of having when I was a girl; this story left me misty eyed.

This is a super book to use to discuss friendship and why people might respond negatively to you...they are scared or have other needs...hungry for food or other needs.

Found this 1996 picture book in a Friends of the Library sale and knew that young dog lovers would appreciate finding it in the Little Free Library I steward. Wonderful watercolor illustrations and a sweet story about a lost Newfoundland who discovers an equally lost kitten in an abandoned cabin on seaside cliffs. Great figurative language establishes setting and creating moods-friendship, safety, fear, reliefand contentment- and would make a terrific mentor text for younger and older readers and learners.

Target audience for simply enjoying the story-kindergarten through grade 3 and as a mentor text in ELA classes for all elementary grades. Would pair nicely the wonderful Star in the Star by Joan Harlow for a great compare/contrast activity with both easy to spot similarities and differences and those much deeper.

Every bit as good as I remembered, and the illustrations are even better! So gorgeous and perfect - this illustrator knows cats and dogs!

Newf washes up on a lonely shore by an abandoned cottage, and finds poor skinny bedraggled Kitten. Newf, being a Newf, quickly adopts Kitten and feeds him good food to plump him up, and bathes him and plays with him and snuggles him. And has to rescue him...twice! But, Newf, being a Newf, has no problem with that...rescuing is what they do. Perfectly lovely!

I just read this to my 6-year old grandson and he told me it deserves 100 stars. My children loved it when they were little, too. It's a charming story that shows friendship love between two very different characters.

It does have some words that are beyond a young child's vocabulary, but to me, this is always a plus. It allows learning new words.
