Since Ruby Milton’s mother committed suicide, she’s forgotten what it’s like to be seventeen.

It's the eve of Push Me, Pull Me's release and I thought I'd pop in to say hello and to let you know that I absolutely adore this story and hope you do too! If you love the idea of romance and tragedy set in a small town, involving a runaway musician and a girl who has lost everything, then this is the book for you! It's my first Young Adult contemporary and I'm already working on another as I enjoyed writing this one so much!
Oh, and by the way, I cried a lot while writing this story so you may require tissues! Just saying!

Het mooie einde, de ontwikkeling van Ruby en de onthulling over Byron maken goed dat het verhaal in eerste instantie nogal op de vlakte blijft. Het is interessant, maar niet zo heel goed geschreven. De romance is sexy en romantisch, maar een beetje too much en Byron is wel erg perfect. Leest vlot weg en het is niet saai, maar het is ook geen boek dat me zal bijblijven, denk ik. Where do I start? Well lets start with the fact that I started this book a few hours ago and I am already finished, sitting here writing a review. This has to be one of the best books I've read in 2015. Vanessa has really outdone herself.
After Ruby's mother commits suicide, her world falls apart. Soon she finds herself playing a mother to her toddler brother, Jay and a guardian to her alcoholic father. On the day of her mother's death, she happens to meet Byron. Just only a few minutes before she's told about her mother's death. Even after the death she can't get the mysterious guy she met at the bookstore out of her mind. Just when things begin to really shatter, she finds her support in Byron. Both who are living with too much. She knows he's hiding something and just when she feels that things are getting better, he disappears. Everything is left a mystery, one that Ruby needs to solve on her own.
Ruby was a beautifully written character, one of my favourites I've read this year. She's tough, strong and well developed. All characters are in this book, even the mysterious Byron. I loved her relationship with her brother, Jay. I would actually get excited when those scenes came up in the book. It was so lovely to read about and made it that much more real. The main character's hardship could be felt through the pages and at one point I felt like saying "Ruby, don't be Jay's mother, be his sister."
Byron, although mysterious was probably one of my favourite male characters to read about this year. Even though not much was said about him and throughout the whole book he was a bit of a mystery, he was a delight to read about. I loved that Vanessa kind of tricked us with what was going on with him. After every few pages, here I was sitting and plotting what he was hiding. Was I right even once? Nope... The ending was a big surprise as I wasn't expecting that at all. A perfect ending to a even better book.
Having read Captivate by Vanessa previously, I automatically knew I would love her writing style. Now for me, the writing style is a huge making or breaking of a book. I've read plenty of books with great storylines and plots but the writing style was off and those books often end in one or two stars. The writing style for me is what makes a book, a twenty day read or a one day read. The characters are all likable and well developed. The book is nicely timed and not too slow or not too fast, in other words perfectly paced.
Vanessa is probably one of the loveliest people I've ever gotten to know. She's kind and an amazing writer with a talent for amazing plots and character development. Don't forget to pick this book up, it comes out on August the 25th.

When I purchased this book I hadn't read the blurb and didn't know anything at all about Push Me, Pull Me. I selected the book because I know this author and have read two of her other books set in the underwater world of Marin.
Having now read it, I think the blurb actually gives too much away.
Push Me, Pull Me is an intriguing read, with the story told in an engaging, captivating style that kept me turning the pages.
The last few books I've read have been 'did not finish' books for me, and it was so refreshing to find something well written that kept me interested.
I liked the West Australian setting. I thought the opening chapter was really well done, dealing with the suicide of the mother. All the family relationships were good and the only small problem I had was in the way Ruby accepted that Byron's secret was to do with some kind of 'abuse' by his parents... I couldn't quite make the same stretch at the time.
Given Byron's refusal to discuss his scars, however, I guess Ruby was entitled to make whichever conclusions she wanted to.
This is a quick read, and the epilogue makes a nice finish to an enjoyable story.

"Ze had ervoor gekozen om zonder afscheid bij ons weg te gaan. De kans om haar gelukkig te maken, om haar te laten blijven, had ze niet eens gegegeven. Ze was gewoon gegaan." ~ p16.
Knap als een verhaal je op de laatste pagina toch nog spontaan een traan weet te ontloken! Ik moest de brok echt even weg slikken en heb nog 10 minuten even voor me uit zitten staren na het lezen van de laatste bladzijde. Wat kan verdriet soms toch mooi zijn.
"Ik zou mam nooit meer zien, zou nooit meer met haar praten, nooit meer een gesprek met haar hebben waar ik altijd van droomde op het moment dat ze eindelijk weer eens gelukkig was." ~ p21.
Duw me weg, houd me vast vertelt het verhaal van de 17-jarige Ruby, wiens leven behoorlijk op z'n kop komt te staan wanneer haar moeder zelfmoord pleegt. Haar vader grijpt naar de drank en ze voelt zich verplicht de zorg voor haar jongere broertje op zich te nemen. En dat alles zonder een traan te laten. Wanneer ze Byron ontmoet is ze direct van hem onder de indruk. Maar veel laat de jongen, die duidelijk zijn eigen problemen heeft, niet los. Mag ze hem vast houden, of duwt hij haar uiteindelijk weg?
Het was qua cover sowieso al liefde op het eerste gezicht! Zonder te veel weg te geven van het verhaal trekt de cover al enorm aan. Gelukkig stelde de binnenkant ook absoluut niet teleur. Een boek dat leest zoals het leven is, niet alles is rooskleurig of enorm spannend en toch hoop je net als in het echte leven op een mooi einde. Dat zijn mij voor de fijnste boeken om tussendoor te lezen, om even alles om je heen te vergeten en gewoon te zijn in het verhaal. Wat mij betreft had hij nog wel 100 bladzijdes mogen duren... en het verhaal geeft ook zeker de ruimte voor die extra pagina's.
"Waarom was hij in hemelsnaam uitgerekend naar Donny Vake gekomen en hoelang was hij nu precies van plan te blijven? En het aller belangrijkste... Waar had hij zonet aan gedacht waardoor hij zo verdrietig had geleken?" ~ p88.
Omdat ik nog ruimte zie voor groei, hou ik het op 4 sterren, maar de basis is er absoluut al en het voelt meer als een 'gewoon goed'. Niet alle boeken hoeven te knallen om je te kunnen raken, soms kan iets juist klein en mooi zijn. Dit is zoiets kleins, wat je als lezer gewoon moet koesteren...

Op vrijdag heb ik eigenlijk altijd zin in een wat dunner boek dat ik gewoon even op de heen en terugweg van en naar mijn werk kan lezen. Vandaag viel de keuze op dit boek van Vanessa Garden dat ik tijdens de garagesale van Dutch Venture Publishing gekocht had. Ik had het boek al vaker langs zien komen en als therapeut was ik erg nieuwsgierig naar de emoties in dit boek!
Net zoals bijna alle boeken van Dutch Venture Publishing leest het boek lekker en vlot weg. De vertaling is heel goed gelukt en voelt heel natuurlijk. Maar ik had eigenlijk gehoopt dat het meer zou zijn dan een vlotte, makkelijke read. Ik had gehoopt dat ik tranen met tuiten zou janken, dat ik geraakt zou worden, dat ik spijt zou krijgen dat ik het boek meegenomen had in het openbaar vervoer.
En dat is helaas niet gebeurd.
Hiervoor zijn de emoties van de diverse karakters en hun persoonlijke ontwikkeling net niet goed genoeg uitgewerkt. Eigenlijk gedurende nagenoeg het hele verhaal vertoont Ruby vluchtgedrag. Ze neemt de zorg voor haar broertje op zich, ze laat zich afleiden door haar beste vriend Martin en ze wordt halsoverkop verliefd op de mysterieuze Byron. Maar de voor mij interessante emoties van rouw en woede en verdriet, die worden nauwelijks aangestipt en komen op die momenten daardoor ook niet lekker uit de verf. Ruby heeft een muur opgetrokken om zich heen en helaas mogen wij ook als lezer niet over die muur heen kijken.
Daarnaast heb ik een heel groot issue met het plot. Er wordt door heel veel karakters niet gecommuniceerd, met name naar Ruby toe. Martin, Byron, Madeline, haar vader, haar buurvrouw, de buurman, niemand vertelt daadwerkelijk wat er in hun omgaat en wat ze weten. Op die manier voelen nagenoeg alle relaties, behalve die met haar kleine broertje Jay, als ongefundeerd. En daarnaast voelt het alsof de interessante delen van het plot het boek eigenlijk nooit gehaald hebben.
Het is op zich helemaal geen slecht boek, maar ik had meer verwacht. Ik had eigenlijk vooral meer emotie verwacht. Zowel van Ruby als van de karakters en wereld om haar heen.

Ruby should be sad, but most of all she's angry. Her emotions are quite tangled. Only Byron, a mysterious, musical boy passing through her village, provides a ray of hope.
Ruby is getting more and more feelings for him, but there is clearly something he is hiding from her...
Push me, pull me was the first book I read in one go in a long time.
The story, which starts very poignantly, grabbed me from the first page. Vanessa has a great writing style so you can effortlessly let yourself be carried away. Ruby and Byron are interesting characters and appeal to the imagination, I can see them before me and loved to empathize with them.
The side characters, including Ruby's best friend Martin, lack some depth that could have been easily solved with a few more pages, something I wouldn't have mind at all. For me, Push me, pull me could be a few more chapters longer!
The story itself is emotional, bittersweet, romantic and with a hint of mystery.
Besides broaching some fierce subjects, it is a very loving story. I have read it with great pleasure and I absolutely recommend it.
Push me away, hold me is a book that grabs you and that you don’t want to let go!

Push Me, Pull Me is one of those books that captures you by the soul and doesn't let go! Beautifully written and evocative, Ruby's story is undeniably heartbreaking. Ultimately though, it is a story of hope and loyalty and overcoming. Loved!

Push Me, Pull me is an interesting and well-written story about Ruby, a teen girl who is left to pick up the pieces after her mother's suicide. With a dad with a drinking problem, and a little brother to take care of, Ruby doesn't have much time to focus on her own social life, but that changes when the sexy and mysterious Byron comes to town. He appears to have his own secrets and demons to deal with, but the two are attracted to each other, and despite the fact that they both have a lot on their plate, they can't seem to stay away from each other.
I can't say too much without giving away spoilers, but I will say that I'm a major sucker for stories like this. I enjoyed the way Ruby grew and changed throughout the story, especially how she handled her relationships to the various supporting characters, including best-friend Martin, and local eccentric Mrs. Patfield, whom she was a bit closed minded and judgmental toward at first (as a teen naturally would be) but opened up to later.
This was a good book about being open to love and support from others while handling some of life's most brutal challenges. I look forward to checking out more from Vanessa Garden!

This was a great book it only took me a couple of days to finish during my baby's nap times. The characters really found their way into my heart, I felt like I really knew them and was there with them. Emotions were really there for these characters I felt the hapliness, sadness, loneliness etc right along with them. I would not hesitate to purchase and read another Vanessa Garden book the 3 I have read so far have all been excellent.

Wow!
I really had no idea what to expect, having chosen this book at random from available Kindle Unlimited ebooks, and boy was I surprised. A very unexpected love story, with a surprising twist, that had me in tears. I'll definitely be checking out more books by this author.
I really had no idea what to expect, having chosen this book at random from available Kindle Unlimited ebooks, and boy was I surprised. A very unexpected love story, with a surprising twist, that had me in tears. I'll definitely be checking out more books by this author.

Verhaal van een jonge meid die er alles aan doet om haar jongere broertje een beter leven te geven.
Ze probeert dit niet alleen voor haar broer, maar ook voor haar vader.
Ze werkt, leert, doet het huishouden alles voor anderen en ondertussen vergeet ze zelf te leven.
Tot ze Byron ontmoet. Deze jongen laat haar zien dat er nog andere dingen in het leven zijn dan zorgen voor anderen. Hoewel hij zelf problemen met zich meedraagt.
De liefde/vriendschap tussen hen is wel wat mysterieus. Tot ze ontdekt wat hij te verbergen heeft.
