In Reckoning Tide, the stand-alone sequel to The Wind Weeps, Andrea has escaped from the isolated cabin on the coast of British Columbia where her husband has abused her for the past year. With the man she should have married, Andrea strives for a normal life, but her ex-husband refuses to live without her. He terrorizes her relentlessly. Prey to his stalking, Andrea must find a way to end her nightmare.
Canada's west coast is a scenic adventure playground. Here, with close ties to the fishing industry, Anneli Purchase became acquainted with many colourful characters who lived and worked on the coast. They have inspired her to write The Wind Weeps. This page turner is followed by the sequel, Reckoning Tide, and then by a third related novel called Marlie.
Her novel, Orion's Gift, is set in Mexico's Baja peninsula. Romance, suspense, and treachery will have you turning pages.

Purchase continues to write from her home on Vancouver Island.
Her articles on coastal life are published in Canadian magazines.
This book picks up right at the end of The Wind Weeps, which should be read first. Andrea’s reprieve and escape from her abusive husband, Robert, is brief, and he’s out to get her. What ensues is a stalking nightmare as Andrea and her lover, Jim, flee Robert through the windswept coastal channels and islands of the Canadian Pacific.
The action starts immediately and continues right to the end with several breaks for sexy romance. As in the first book, the authors knowledge of the area and the life of a fisherman add a lot of authenticity to the setting and action.
Purchase does a good job of showing the lingering complexities around domestic violence, how women aren’t believed, and how hard it is for them to be safe from their abusers. Even Jim is a bit of a jerk for a while. But Robert escalates rapidly and the need to escape him becomes critical to the couple’s survival. I liked Andrea’s arc from dependence on a man in book one to a strong woman who sticks up for herself and is determined to take charge of her life. A fast-paced series for romance and suspense readers.
Story The book begins where The Wind Weeps leaves off. Robert, Andrea’s violent husband, continues to pursue her in the hope of getting her back. She has taken refuge with Jim, with whom she is in love. The love is reciprocal, and the pair hope for a happy time together, but Robert thinks otherwise. Getting increasingly violent, Robert pursues them wherever they go.
Characters Robert’s increasing irrational and violent behaviour has the expected effect on Andrea, and her increasing fear is entirely believable. I thought she stood up to the stress well, but not too well as to be unbelievable. Jim is a kind and thoughtful person who truly loves Andrea. But even so, he has a couple of outbursts when the stress gets too much. However, unlike Robert, his regret is genuine. I think Robert does love Andrea, but his temper and desire for complete control makes him treat her badly. Whenever he hits her, he says, like all abusive partners, that he’s sorry and it won’t happen again. And also that it was Andrea who made him do it because of her behaviour. Ms Purchase has captured the mindset of all three main characters extremely well.
Writing A gripping story. It is told in first person, with each character taking the lead. This gives us an intimate view of how each one’s mind is working. She seems to have been able to understand the feelings of both the abuser and the abused, as well as Jim, the hopeful rescuer. The background of fishing off the west coast of Canada is well researched and feels authentic, and the dangers and beauty of the place are clearly shown. I would recommend this book to anyone, but you should read The Wind Weeps first.
Escaping from her abusive husband Robert, Andrea finds safety and plans to start a new life with new love Jim. However mentally unstable Robert is not prepared to relinquish his control and hold over Andrea. Stalking the couple in a creepy game of cat and mouse across the ocean into a reckoning tide.
I actually read this book in one sitting. This is one of those wonderful stories that pulls you in from page one. I was intrigued. The storyline did remind me a lot of the novel and film Dead Calm and the suspension in this thriller did not have quite the edge that keeps building up to an explosive ending. All in all though it does have a good pace to the story and is a nice easy read.
