Moonrising #1

Midnight Moonrising

Rate this book
Mena's life is complicated. She's just murdered and buried her husband, the local wolf pack's alpha - problem number one. Phoenix, the High Vampire, is the one her heart beats for, but not the one her wolf wants - problem number two. Her wolf pines for Alex, the human homicide detective who might just send her down for murder - three. Four, wolves and vampires don't mix. Five, she has no clue how to be alpha, keep her pack safe while fighting off challengers with every step she takes, or what it would take to tame her wolf, which is the biggest problem of them all. Because the beast might just forfeit Mena's life when its insatiable thirst for blood is unleashed on the world in just a few short days, with the next full moon.

Which should be doable. Except for the Nexus... and the little extra problem of bonding with a stranger.

I AM SO FRUSTRATED AND (KIND OF) PISSED.

Actual Rating: 3.33 stars
Thanks to K.S. Haigwood for an Audible copy

K.S. Haigwood and Anne Conley’s Midnight Moonrising follows Mena’s story after she accepted the moon and received her wolf. It was now her time to decide which one among her pack she will choose to become her beta, her second-in-command. In the meantime, a rebellion among her people has started. Some of them were out to kill her to take her place. What made things more complicated was that her wolf seemed to have a mind of its own and was hiding secrets from Mena.

So, what can I say? Let me start on the shifter side of things. When it comes to it, the ideas the author had were pretty unique, in my opinion. The Moonrising concept was just so good and how it pushed and pulled around everyone. It was as if Mena and the others were stitched together by invisible threads even without Phoenix and the others meeting with the witches.

There were so many, little plot twists and I liked almost every one of them, especially the one about Mark which I didn’t expect. That one gave birth to a number of what-ifs in my head. Without that great revelation about his intentions, Mark’s choices and he himself wouldn’t make that much sense.

Generally, when it comes to the characters, I loved how their relationship with each other developed really well throughout the story. They were very much involved with one another’s decisions and actions. The authors wrote most of their interactions neatly and made sure that each of them was able to have a chance to talk or argue with everyone else.

I want to talk about Alex Rhodes first who was a detective. He’s human unlike the rest of them. He’s been acquainted with Mena and Mark since high school. During Mark’s funeral, he and Mena met again. He was assigned to handle Mark’s case. In my opinion, he was the stupidest male love-interest I have ever met and I wonder how he fulfilled his job with that brain of his. It pissed me off that he was so in denial of the obvious. He was so blinded by his want for Mena that his mind was flushing out the idea that she’s not really into him.

Mena, with her wolf, was like a person with split personality. The wolf could take over her body anytime it wanted, and Mena had to fight for her own flesh. It was curious and disturbing. The part wherein Mena Mena was an exquisitely-molded character until she wasn’t. By the last ten percent of the book, she was a sharp sword that her creator/s just decided to throw back in the furnace to melt, to lose her luster and edge. I loved how she was in the beginning: strong and unafraid. She knew how to make the most of her situation, leading her pack the best that she could even though she was having a problem with her wolf. But then the ending ruined her. She’d become weak in the last chapters. It was reasonable due to her situation, but I am against the fact that she was placed in it. I knew that it would make for a good plot and conflict, but it almost destroyed what I adored about her. All that was left were ruins of who she was that she was still trying to pick up. I hate that she needed Ace. If there’s a little thing that I liked after her change, it was that she was really firm in fighting for her love for Phoenix. She was very stubborn and would do anything for the two of them even if it would be very difficult, and even if it could hurt Ace. I just really hope that she and Phoenix would still be together when this series ends.

Phoenix was the best part of this book, so I have nothing much to say about him. He’s just so kind and caring. I didn’t like seeing him suffer. Out of all of them, even though he was a vampire, Phoenix was the most human. He had sacrificed a lot and endured a lot of pain just for the sake of being with Mena and bringing out the best in her. His unspoken anguish was just so earnest. Honestly, if there’s one thing I would like to change in all of his decisions it would be the parts wherein he didn’t stick to Mena’s side close enough. This is the only time I’m supporting the idea of an over-protective man towards his woman. He was doing so much, but I think he could’ve done more by being selfish. The truth is that I would’ve preferred if the book ended with Phoenix killing Mena, but there’s a sequel so it’s not going to happen.

Ace is the core of all my annoyance. I loathe the idea that he had to enter their lives. Basically, that’s because I’m on Team Phoenix. He had the fastest character development in history which made me cringe hard. He was a light switch instantly flicked. As firm and as quick as his personality’s shift was his relationship with Mena. It made sense under certain circumstances but I just could not comprehend its capability of being genuine if it were to turn into something deeper.

Now this brings me to the way things ended. First, I think the villain revealed, whom I will not name, was too-easy to defeat. I thought I was going to witness more of his evil causing a greater chaos, but it was not enough. It was as if he was just a toddler who decided that it’s time for a tantrum. He was the least of my concerns. Second, the conclusion with Mena, Phoenix, and Ace was definitely not a cliff-hanger but it obviously was going to lead all of them into a new turmoil in the next installment of the series. I have a feeling that I might end up extra irked when I continue reading/listening about them.

Overall, this book is worth reading. If you love shape-shifters, vampires, witches, and romance, then definitely give it a try. I hope to read Andromeda’s Reign soon.

If like me you have read the prequel Accepting the Moon then you will be well acquainted with new werewolf and all round Alpha Mena. Mena had lived with her cheating , lying husband for twelve years when one night everything came to a head and she realised the relationship was well and truly dead in the water. Leaving Mark was a no brainer for Mena but unknown to her Mark was a werewolf and a very possessive one at that! A chance meeting with Jaxon a vampire sends her in a totally new direction as Mark and his Pack try to hunt her down leaving Mena no choice but to defend herself and then boy is the cat left well and truly amongst the pigeons ! Mena kills Mark which makes her the new Alpha and then of course there's Jaxons king to deal with but it would seem that Phoenix is about to make life even more complicated for the new Alpha!
Mena is trying hard to sort out her feelings but one thing is sure not all her Pack are happy to see her! Ok select a new Beta , avoid being arrested for murder and somehow convince the Pack that an alliance with Phoenix and his vampires is a good thing. First problem is twenty seven step up to be her number two which is crazy! Second problem Menas inner wolf wants to climb the very human detective Alex like a tree! Oh and there's no love lost between vampires and wolves and someone is trying very hard to destroy both Mena and Phoenix. Can this woman catch a break? Apparently not as Menas inner wolf has ideas of her own and Mena feels herself slipping away whilst outside forces begin to attack her Pack!
This is very unusual story and unlike any other I've read. The relationships are well and truly messed up with Mena insanely attracted to Phoenix but this seven hundred year old vampire is not sure he knows how to love. Her wolf keeps taking over and as she gets stronger it's clear she would kill Phoenix in order to be with Alex. An uneasy compromise is reached but I felt uncomfortable with the solution if honest and my heart ached for those involved. Alex might be innocent and unaware of what's under his nose but Phoenix stepped aside to protect the woman he is increasingly coming to care for. No he isn't perfect far from it and makes all kinds of mistakes but his arrogant armpit tendencies are forgivable as we watch him hurt and yet never give in. I struggle with Mena at times though. Yes it's all new to her but to this reader she switches from weak to loud and in charge and then petulant and I got whiplash from her constant dilly dallying. I like you , I don't like you, I'm going, I'm staying yes you get the idea that this female is not my favourite heroine. What I really liked though were the supporting characters as they really helped flesh this unusual story out and added so much to the plot. We've met wolves and vampire so why not add witches and lions to the mix? You will laugh at these characters and perhaps even roll your eyes but the last third of this book is anything but dull and the last page will leave you crying out for more
I was gifted a copy of this in exchange for an honest review

My Thoughts - 4 out of 5 Unicorns - I really liked it!!!
***I own the ebook and the audiobook

The cover is a work of dreamy art :)

This is the 2nd book in the series. It is for adults only due to the content. I definitely recommend reading this series in order because you will not know the back story if you don’t.

I listened to the audiobook while mowing the lawn. The only time I can truly multitask. I really love listening to audiobooks while I mow. Mena and her wolf are definitely at odds with each and what each one wants. There is a lot going on, and she has been swept into the whirlwind that is now her life. Phoenix is definitely an Alpha male. I really like the pack members who have been sticking close to Mena. Bad things are happening, and I have no idea what will happen next.

I do own the next ebook in the series, and plan on reading it after I do some catching up. I recommend this book to all the paranormal fans who love lots of action, drama, and conflict because this book has it all :)

"Can Love stop a war"
This is going to be an amazing series!.
The story line is incredible. Plus the characters are awesome!. Mena was married for twelve years to Marc. Then she catches him cheating. Mena leaves him during a storm. It was storming so much she stops at a seedy motel for the night. There she meets Jaxon a sexy Vampire. He tries to get her to leave with him. But before this can happen they are surrounded by wolves. A can pulls up and Marc gets out. As it turns out Marc is the Alpha wolf to a pack of wolves. In all the twelve years Mena was married to him she did not know he was a werewolf!. While trying to get away Marc bites Miona and she kills Marc. This makes her the new Alpha of the pack plus his bite turns Mena into a werewolf. Jaxson takes Mina home to see if he can get her help. There she meets and falls for the Leader of the Vampires Phoenix. Only there is a big problem Werewolves and Vampires have been in war with each other for years!. You can not help but love this book!. It is packed full of suspense, action, humor and scorching hot Romance!!!!. This is a must read book!.

I didn’t read Book 1 prior to starting Book 2. On that note, I would recommend reading Book 1 before moving further otherwise: A. You won’t know the details as to why Mena killed her husband/former pack leader. B. You won’t know what the connection between Mena and Phoenix is. C. Or why she was so eager to trust him after having known him for less than a week.

With all the questions/issues I had with this story, I would not recommend it and won’t be continuing this series. I swear the author made all the character’s stupid based on their actions. They forget to tell the new alpha the rules, they don’t know how an alpha’s bonding works, not telling her pack what was going on, etc.

Narrator:

Pros:
1. She has an excellent speaking voice.

Cons:
1. Very annoying style to her voice!
2. There isn’t much variety in character voices.
3. She constantly does a bunch of random long pauses in the middle of sentences where no pause, much less a really long one should be. Ex: Mena had to go upstairs and…………………. Tell Phoenix what happened.
4. She talks with inflection to her tone. Every other sentence it seemed like she would phrase it as though it were a question, having the last syllable go up at the end. Annoying!

Questionable areas in the story:

1. Mena was married for twelve years. How did Mena not know her husband was a werewolf, much less a pack leader? Didn’t he disappear a lot? Weren’t there lots of random people that came around the house? Why hadn’t her husband told her the truth?

2. Why did Mena staged her husband’s death to look like a murder and not natural causes or an accident? Common sense would have had them skip the murder part because that would have the cops more involved in their pack. The pack/leader is obviously not a smart one.

3. Why didn’t Mena or Phoenix wipe the knife off that killed her husband and Chris? Again, common sense. Obviously, a centuries-year-old vampire isn’t that smart either.

4. There’s a part where a vampire (Jackson maybe?) shows up to get the knife back from the cop. He figures that after drinking the cops blood, he could lay a broom or something on the ground and the cop will think he tripped over it. Who cares that his head wouldn’t be hurt/sore after supposedly hitting it on the pavement.

5. Mena is the pack leader of a pack she’s only known about for a very short period of time. Why in the world did she not have a sit-down with other members to learn the basics, rules, everything about being a werewolf/pack leader? Again, common sense since he hadn’t known werewolves were even a real thing.

6. Mena sneaks out of her house after Katie’s murdered. Phoenix ends up sneaking up behind her in an attempt to scare her. Mena is a werewolf. Werewolves are known to have a great sense of smell. So, why wasn’t she able to tell who had her based on his smell? Hadn’t she just been commenting about how good Phoenix smelled? There’s also a scene where, I forgot the bad wolfs name (the one Mena destroys), sneaks up behind Mena. Mena being a werewolf can’t seem to tell if the individual is human, much less male or female. The fact that she’s glad she doesn’t have a male wolf inside her? Yeah…

7. Phoenix was mad when he walked in and saw Jackson with a dead body. What does he do? He counts like he’s dealing with a little child.

8. Why did Mena think that if Phoenix drank her blood it would hurt him?

9. Why did everyone think that if Mena’s wolf took control of her body for good that it would lead to “hell on earth?” The wolf didn’t have magical powers or anything.

10. Mena has sex with Alex as Mena (yet, the author keeps going on that the wolf did). Yet, she’s the one that initiates it and seems to enjoy herself (orgasms twice) yet, later acts like it was torture having sex with him. She didn’t enjoy it, but tells Alex she enjoyed it, “she lied.” We know the wolf wasn’t the one having sex because she was too weak to take over.

11. Why did the wolf go to sleep when Mena was getting ready to tell Alex about everything?

12. Why would they refer to the werewolf human side by their wolf name? That made no sense to me.

13. Alex gets beaten by Darren and no one even knows it’s happening until AFTERWARDS. What about the nexus spell? The author messed up there.

Comments:

1. This has to be the first werewolf story where the wolf/human seems like she has something else going on besides being a werewolf. In every other story I’ve read/listened to, the wolf never actually talks, yet the human side knows what the wolf is thinking/wants. Additionally, it’s true the wolf can take over the body, but it’s normally due to basic instincts (scared they’re about to die, need to fight, extra mad, etc.) and that’s when the eyes change, fur might grow, claws might come out; the wolf and human are one, not two entities, so there also wouldn’t be any secrets between the two. The wolf side doesn’t talk to the human side like it’s a person. Wolves are animals (humans technically are too), but they don’t talk. I just wasn’t a fan of this new take on the werewolf story.

2. Mena obviously knows nothing about werewolves. She says she’d have four legs in wolf form and so she’d gained two more legs. Um…that’s not how it works, Mena.

3. When Katie and Mena are out to lunch, Mena talks about Phoenix. Katie says she’s never met him AND doesn’t have any issue with him. Huh?

4. I’m SOOOOOOO tired of reading how the two main characters fit together so well when having sex.

5. I get that Mena’s wolf was too exhausted to come to the front when Mena had sex with Alex (kinda sorta), but it was strange how turned on Mena ended up getting when she was supposedly not interested in Alex in that way.

One complicated affair but what a thrill of a ride

I didn’t want to put Midnight Moonrising down but alas I had to sleep at some point. This story was intriguing and unique, at least for me. I don’t recall ever reading a romance with a similar story line. If you haven’t picked up the prequel, Accepting the Moon it’s free and while you don’t need it to read this story it certainly wouldn’t hurt to read it first.

In Midnight Moonrising Mena has recently been forced to kill her husband in self-defense, in the process she was bitten. Now having accepted the moon and fighting off a challenger she is the acknowledged Alpha, Queen of her pack. But life isn’t a smooth ride from there out. Mena is swift falling for the Vampire King of Montgomery, Phoenix and as swift as she is falling her wolf is setting up road blocks. Mena has to contend with her wolf’s very real threat to kill the man she is coming to love. In the meantime pack protocol requires that she select a new beta before the next full moon rising. A few contenders would be one thing but she is presented with over twenty. Were that not enough, her wolf has decided that she has her heart or ambitions are set on the homicide detective, Alex who is assigned to her husband’s murder investigation. Talk about a conundrum. One, need I say it again… he’s human. Two, oh yeah he’s assigned to her husband’s murder… Oh duh, can anyone say prison sentence? Life gets really challenging for this ménage-quartet. I mean physically there are three of them but mentally it’s a whole other ball game. Add to this a rogue faction in the pack that are out for vengeance and a take over and you are set up for plenty of action, sexual tension and suspense to last well beyond this book.

This story was presented in an interesting blend of Mena in first person and the third person perspectives of the other characters including some of the secondary characters and it totally worked. When I first started reading about Mena I had to wonder if she was a bit wishy washy and weak as everyone seemed to want to walk all over her and take over. You find out fast though that Mena is anything but weak. She can’t stand having others make decisions for her or act in her stead without consulting her and let’s just say she is damned adamant about letting them know it. Even as strong willed as she is its questionable if she has the will to conquer her wolf.

The chemistry between Phoenix and Mena is off the charts. While Mena respects and cares about Alex he really doesn’t trip her trigger in the least. It’s too bad she can’t convince her wolf of the same. Being trapped in her head while the wolf goes after what she wants really sends up some conflicts all around. Then there is Alex who really is a standup guy who is just a bit clueless to what is going on around him. Even so it was interesting to watch him and the wolf “dance.” Let’s just say Alex certainly know how to use his handcuffs. Having had a crush on Mena since high school, it takes very little for Alex to fall head over heels in love.

Phoenix was a total skeptic when it came to love as the story began. Watching him fall deeper and deeper under Mena’s spell was gratifying. Here is this centuries old vampire who thinks love is just an emotion that will pass quickly in and out of your life. So why not go with it when it’s there and let it go when it’s gone? Life has a few serious lessons for this boy. I seriously liked Phoenix. He is definitely an alpha male. He’s been a leader for so long he forgets to ask permission or consult with others. He can be selfish and a bit of an ass at times but he is definitely lovable.

This story had several challenging story arcs and was well put together over all. I really enjoyed it whether I was ready to cry as my emotions were touched or ready to curse at characters or when things didn’t go the way I thought they would. While this story definitely had an end it certainly opened the door to more in the future so I’m really glad the authors have planned a sequel and perhaps more in a series. More than just the main characters I was intrigued by the secondary characters as well. I would highly recommend this one as a great start to a new series.

I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

I realized very quickly that Mena’s wolf is a bitch.  It’s like an invasion of the body snatchers.  Mena stays in constant turmoil.

“I don’t need your help!”
”Yes, you do, Mena!”  I’m not going to let you get us killed.  Whether you like it or not, this is my body, too, and I aim to keep it alive and out of prison!”  she shouted back as she flung a small suitcase onto the bed.
”Your body is hairy and has four legs, bitch!”
”Screw you—“

In comes Alex, the detective over her husband’s case.  As soon as Mena’s wolf meets Alex, she claims him as hers.  Which forces Mena into a very strange predicament.  Mena is in love with Phoenix.  So the two come to an awkward agreement.  She gets Phoenix, then her wolf takes over her body, so she can have Alex.

Phoenix is not real, keen with this agreement as one might imagine.

As soon as her pack learns of her wolfs ability to control her, they frantically seek out another alpha that can demand the wolf call out her name.  This will enable her wolf the inability to speak or possess her body.  A nameless wolf is known as a Moonrising wolf, and  is considered a danger and an abomination.  If they can not find another male alpha willing to bond with her before the next full moon, they risk losing her forever.

Now finally meet Ace.  The cocky, lion shifter from Las Vegas. I admit I didn’t like him.  Phoenix is clearly heartbroken but knows that this is the only way. Once the bond takes place they will be mated for life.  Throw in the fact that Alex believes Mena is in love with him also and yep, you guess it one big, epic, love triangle.

There are so many layers to this story.  It’s complexity will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Favorite Scene: When they meet the witches for the first time.
Favorite Quotes:

You are everything I never knew I wanted.”

This review is a long time coming - I actually read the book several months ago and am STILL thinking about it.

Overall reading experience/ content:
What's so fun about Haigwood's books is they stay with you - I still find myself drifting back to the island (See her Eternal Island series) and also drifting periodically into Montgomery and thinking about some of these characters.
She has a way of designing characters that stay with you.

I read Accepting the Moon last year and absolutely loved it - couldn't put it down. So naturally I was left wanting more and thrilled when Haigwood released this brilliant follow up! Mena is a brilliantly designed character, consistent, despite the fact that she's sharing herself with her wolf for most of this. Watching her struggle to find herself and make peace with her wolf is enlightening and as they fight over the different men they love - two of them for Mena - it's all so wonderfully suspenseful and full of indecisiveness. I'm a fan of Phoenix. Ace is pig-headed and immature BUT I understand the bond Mena feels with him. It's all so well thought out that it almost seems natural - as if she's merely telling us a true story.

Continuity -
This is great, I didn't find any discrepancies.
Even with the two authors - they clearly work well together. (By the way, you cannot go wrong with either of them!)

Editing/Proofing:
Not a lot of errors found - seems professionally edited.

Formatting -
The formatting is actually really gorgeous , as always with Haigwood's books.
The whole book is a beautiful work of art, presentation-wise.

Cover -
Looks to be professionally done, well designed and it's pretty and relevant.

Overall 4.5 out of 5 stars.
It isn't perfect, but it's pretty damn close.

Wonderful book, this author never fails to deliver with her great stories!

After having been rescued from near death by a vampire, she is taken to Master Vampire Phoenix's home, Mena discovers that she is now a werewolf and alpha of her late husbands pack. Not to mention the fact that she comes face to face with the most gorgeous man with eyes she could drown in. That alone is enough to make her forget the horrors she has endured.

Problem is Mena does not know the first thing about being a werewolf and is not informed of a very important fact concerning her first shift. When Mena's wolf finally makes an appearance it's to let her know that she wants that very sexy detective, but Mena wants nothing to do with him, at least not in that way and that's when the problems of omission begin. Time is running out for Mena, she must discover her wolf's secret before the next full moon, or there will be consequences.

At first I thoroughly enjoyed the conversations between Mena and her wolf, until the wolf started to show her true colors.

Lots of fun laughs, magic and passion.. So many weres, vampires and a trio of witches that I absolutely loved. I laughed, got angry and cheered.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book has a very interesting triad situation going on for A werewolf Alpha, a Vampire Master, and a Human are all caught in a triangle of love. Each of them love the werewolf Alpha. How did she become a werewolf alpha? How did she meet the vampire master? What happens when the alpha is not told certain things that she needs to do within the first 48 hours of becoming a werewolf? When the metaphyiscal poop hits the fan, or threatens to, it will really hit the fan if it comes to pass. The pack and the clan both have to band together to make sure certain things do not transpire. There are definitely a lot of surprises throughout the book from the pack, to the witches, to a rogue within the ranks of the pack. You really need to read this book and see how it is all handled by the alpha. Does she ever figure out her wolf's name? If you want to find out the answer to that question, you will need to read to find out what happens. Enjoy the book. I cannot wait for the next one to come out now!

I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review by author K.S. Haigwood and Anne Conely. This is book 1 from the authors and is in the POV from Mena, Phoenix, Alex and a couple other characters.

Mena has taken over the Montgomery wolf pack after killing her husband and alpha. Now she has to learn how to deal with betrayal, vengeance, romance and a seriously bitchy inner wolf. Phoenix is the high vampire of Montgomery and also has an interest in Mena and is trying to help her through everything. Alex Rhodes is investigating the murder but is falling for Mena and he is trying to keep her safe.

Once I started this book it was hard to put it down it was so good. The author wrote her characters with heart and soul and it comes across when you read the book. The characters interaction is fantastic and well entertaining.

This is for any mature paranormal romance book lover who enjoys more to their story lines.

10 stars! If you like werewolves, vampires, witches, lions, magic, romance, suspense, and drama this is the book for you! I read the prequel (Accepting the Moon) that led to this book and it was also fantastic. I love paranormal and this book combined it all. I don't want to say to much without giving the book away but Mena, who is a main character and Phoenix develop a strong bond that is gut wrenching and had me in tears at the end...I actually had tears, LOL, and I had to put the book down a few times and walk away because I was just so upset! That's when you know its a good book :) it takes you on a journey and you want it all to end but you don't want it to end because then it will be over! I can not WAIT to read the next part of their story, Andrameda's Reign but in the meantime I've downloaded a couple more of her books :) One of the best books I've read in awhile!

I received this book for a fair and honest review.
This book takes off exactly where Accepting The Moon leaves off, which in my opinion is an wonderful thing.
Mena is slowly coming to terms with all that has transpired in her life in a very short time. She has met the Master vampire, Phoenix, and finds herself attracted to him, but the new wolf inside her has other thoughts. Her wolf has a thing for the police detective, Alex, that Mena has known most of her life. Mena is threatened by not only a rouge wolf but her inner wolf as well. Mena also finds her self in the middle of a love triangle...so to speak...as this story progresses, she will find out what it means to be an Alpha wolf. If you like the Anita Blake series, i highly recommend this read as well.

Because I am judgmental, I went in thinking I would not like this audiobook purely based on this specific cover. I actually HATE this cover. Glad to report this was a HUGE mistake on my part because I really enjoyed this one. I liked so many of the characters including our main character Mena and the vampire Phoenix. Definitely interested in listening to the next book - I want to see where this “new to me” author takes us. If you like paranormal, I recommend this one. Also liked the narrator Pyper Down. Now, do with this review as you will.

I haven't had a book hangover like this in a long time. The authors K.S. Haigwood and Anne Conley has created one bad ass book that I can't get enough of.

I fell in love with all of the characters right away. Phoenix, Mena, Roel, Brad, Heath, and now Ace are my favorites..... Well, okay yes... I just named almost all of the characters in the book.

I just couldn't get enough. I can not wait to get my hands on Andromeda's Reign. I know it is going to be soo good.

I'm speechless! WOW! This book exceeded all of my expectations and more! I can't begin to describe the sexiness that made up this story! There were so many sexy men in the book! I'm team Phoenix because an over 800 year old vampire leader is just hot!
The book was full of sex, action, supernatural, and twists! I think it deserves ten glittery stars, but I will have to settle on five glittery stars! I can't wait for the next book! (Andromeda's Reign)

I...can’t...even...I am a mixed bag of emotions right now. It’s easier to form words with my fingers than my mouth because I can’t swallow around the lump in my throat.

I’ll be honest, I love a book that plays on my emotions. There’s nothing better than reading. I love to read, I love to write. But the absolute best kind of feeling is felt when I am sucked into a book, when the characters draw me in to their world and don’t let me go until the end. That’s a euphoria all of its own. And that’s what happened here.

Mena, Phoenix, Roel...Ace, they all made this story more interesting. There were twists and turns, times I was blind-sided. My emotions were put through the wringer. I didn’t know up from down, left from right, I got turned inside out. I never expected to feel this strongly about the characters and their story, but I know now that this was exactly what was meant to happen.

Back in 2013, I stopped reading PNR. I gave up on vampires, shifters, witches. You name it, I was done with it. I turned my back on the genre that had been a long time favourite.
I can say now that it was more like I ‘thought’ I was finished. But I wasn’t really. I was meant to take a break (even a 5 year one) and then come back to it with an open mind.
I came back to it thanks to another series, but at that time I thought “I’ll read this one series but that’s it. I’m not going back to the genre on the whole.” I was right and wrong at the same time. The bit I was right about; I’m not back in love with the genre.
What I am in love with is this series by KS Haigwood.

I read the novella Accepting The Moon and I fell utterly head over heels in love with Phoenix. That man...what he does to me... I can’t explain in words. He makes me swoon, he makes me angry, he makes me melt into a puddle of goo.
Then I read Midnight Moonrising and fell even harder. I love characters that make you feel their emotions and Mena and Phoenix certainly did that. They totally did a number on my heart. However I wasn’t a fan of a certain wolf, and I wasn’t a fan of Alex. Don’t get me wrong, some people will root for him to be the one to win Mena’s heart, but I am #TeamPhoenix ALL the way!! I don’t know what it was about him, in fact, yes I do; it’s the fact that he isn’t Phoenix. I fell in love with Phoenix and nothing could change my love for him. Alex was actually great. But his major problem was that I’d already given my heart away to the vamp!

I ended this book in tears. KS Haigwood played my emotions like a violin. She knows just what to do to get me on the edge of my seat, my heart racing, palms sweating...she makes me crazy...and I LOVE it!!

This story was written brilliantly. Crafted by somebody who writes beautifully. She pulls every emotion out of me, tugs on every heartstring inside me. What more can I say? There aren’t enough words to describe in detail how amazing she is. You need to read the story for yourself to see what I mean. Some things cannot be explained and this is one of them.
She dropped a major bomb on me in the form of Ace...and that is all I’ll say about that. I can’t expand on that because I’ll spoil your first-hand enjoyment of the explosive moments to come!

If you love PNR, if you’re looking for your next series, THIS is it. I need the next book in my hands like I need the air I breathe. I am on tenterhooks, desperate to know what comes next. I can’t wait to see what’s in store, yet I’m nervous at the same time. What more can this author do to me? She’s already pulled my heart in a million directions. What’s left?

My head is spinning from every name and their position I had to remember in the first chapter. I had to get out my board and make a diagram. This was not for me. The heroine killed her werewolf husband and now she is the alpha in the pack and the others are fighting to be her beta. Her ‘wolf’ has the hots for the detective , Alex, who is assigned to to find out what happened to her dead husband. At least I got that out of my ‘diagram’ with all those names that were thrown at me.
Good luck. You may love it. There are a lot of great reviews for this book. I am in the minority with my disinterest in this one. I was unable to validate how many of those 4-5 star reviews were ARCs.
Reading is subjective. Goodbye.

***Possible Spoiler Alert***
I listened to this on audiobook. The prequel totally whetted my appetite for this book and I was totally ready for it. I love this author's world building. There was so much to take in and the characters were exciting. The problem with writing this review is it's hard to review the book without spoiling big parts of the plot.

So here's the thing. If you'd told me before I read it there would be not one but 2 sort of love triangles in this book, I'd probably have given it a wide berth. But it totally worked as a story. I was totally intrigued how the author was getting them out of the Alex/wolf and Mina/Phoenix thing (well that was more of a square than a triangle). And the second one isn't resolved by the end of the book so I'm desperate to go on to book 2.

The action was amazing. I adored the witches and while I kind of sussed who the baddie was, it wasn't really until the characters sussed it, that I did. I was maybe one step ahead of them but not fully. I didn't have it all worked out.

So this book and series are a fabulous 5 stars. Elements I would not have normally tried totally worked and world building that is absolutely fantastic. I don't read many shifter books so I have no idea if the plot point as to why Mina becomes dangerous is a well-trod plot point in shifter books or not. But I suspect it's not as I've not heard of it before. So I highly recommend this series and I'll be incommunicado until I finish book 2

OMG I’m not even sure where to begin with how good (and very complex) this story is. If you are looking for a quick read then hold off from this one until you have a free day, as there are 62 chapters in this baby. It is the type of book where if you have to put it down, because say you have to go to work, you will be thinking about it the whole day until you can get back to it to see how it plays out. The story is told from lots of peoples perspectives so you get a really complex view on how it all plays out for each of them, just keep note of who’s head you are in at the time. Now I found out that there is a prequel to this book but if you haven’t read it I don’t think it matters, you will just have a bit of a head-ups with who some of the characters are.

So Mena has had a bit of a rough week, finding out your husband of 12 years has been hiding the fact that not only is he a werewolf but Alpha of the Montgomery pack and been having an affair would be enough to make anyone feel a bit crazy. Then have said husband bite you making you a werewolf too and have to shoot him before he kills you, ultimately making you the new alpha of the pack, would be putting an end to the week from hell.

Things then just go from bad to worse; the wolf in her head is giving her grief and seems to want the one person she shouldn’t, Alex the cop assigned to catch her husbands murderer, her vampire boyfriend Phoenix wants to protect her but untimely ends up trying to control her instead causing issues, pack members are challenging her for the right to be alpha (so its kill or be killed), throw in the fact that others in her pack are trying to kill her for revenge before she has even been a werewolf for a few days and you can see that things are only going to get worse before they get better.

Both the men in her life are wanting a part of her and with her wolf taking over more she has to make a deal with the devil, so to speak, to protect the one she loves. If she lets the wolf have her fun with Alex she will let her see Phoenix without taking over and hurting him, which is all Mena cares about. The chemistry and passion between Mena and Phoenix comes right off the page, you can see why they are great together, and so you do feel a bit weird when Alex gets to be all over Mena when the wolf is in control. You want to shout at her ‘Come on girl get a back bone and show that wolf whose boss’.

You are taken on such an emotional rollercoaster throughout this book and you are literally thinking what else can be thrown at Mena to keep her from being safe with the one man she really loves, Phoenix. You will be laughing at times, get hot passion thrown at you, get angry and then feel like you are breaking yourself with the emotional turmoil that Mena has to over come. Only time will tell whether she will get through it all and whom she will be with at the end of it. Phoenix tells her that she will be happy at the end of all this but he doesn’t say who she will be happy with.

So you have vampires, wolf shifters, lion shifters (now Ace coming into the mix is interesting) and witches making this one hell of a complex journey that you can’t wait to find out what happens next.

I received this ARC from Give Me Books for my honest review.

A smooth continuation of the prequel, Midnight Moonrising is her best work yet. Mena finds she must negotiate for control of her own body with the wolf that lives within her. She also learns someone within her pack has betrayed her. The question though, is whether at least one of the betrayers has stayed behind to work against her from within.

Her wolf has taken an almost immediate interest in the police detective investigating the death of her husband. Mena doesn't share her interest. In fact, she'd much rather be making time with Phoenix, master of the local vampire clan. Mena wants to change the rules that werewolves and vampires have lived by since they were created. Not everyone is on board with this.

Haigwood has brought a new twist to the werewolf genre. A new shifter must name their wolf within of being bitten or their wolf inside would begin to take over. Mena just knows her wolf is hiding something, but what is the one thing she won't share. There's more, but that would just spoil the fun if I gave it away here. Needless to say, from the moment Mena learns this, the tension just ramps up and time is running out.

Haigwood has once again delivered a beautifully executed story. Her characters continue to develop both in the history each has and their dreams going forward. Once again, there's everything you've come to expect in any story with her name on the cover.

I received the book late Monday evening and read it until I left work. Got home, read until I couldn't see straight (about 1:30am). Got up yesterday morning and finished the book. Yeah, it was that good. I had to sit back and absorb what I'd read for a bit before I could comment on it.

So what do I think? Impeccably written. Beautiful editing. Great characters (my favorites are Mena and Phoenix) and a few things I've not seen in shapeshifter stories. There is no "down time" in this book; something is always going on. She grabs you and there is no letting go. If you've read her work before, you are going to just love this series! If Haigwood is a new author for you, get the prequel, Accepting the Moon. Although only 70 pages, it's definitely worth taking the time to read.

There were a couple of places where the wording was a bit awkward, but not enough to create any major hiccup in the reading. I found one error missed by her betas and editor. Not a big deal, but it does mean I can't give her five stars. Ohh, but I really want to. As it is, 4 stars isn't a bad thing. Can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

SERIOUSLY??? This has never happened to me before.

I have been fangirling over KS Haigwood for a couple years now. She's the first author I ever "met" online and got to talk to about books and writing. She's the first author I ever beta-read for (I don't do that anymore, so don't ask me...I don't like it, and I suck at it). ;) She's the first author I ever read-and/or-listened (audio book) and reviewed for, with the result being an honest review every time. She instilled in me a love of reviewing books in support of awesome authors like herself. Now she's done something new for me.

I AM TEAM EVERY-FREAKING-BODY and I don't know what to do with that. It's never happened before (ALMOST in the Sookie books, but I ended up being on one team by the end). I have a massive bookhangover, and I pity the author I am reading next. Kristie Haigwood made me fall in love with three (no, make that four...more about him later) hot alpha-type men. I've been able to narrow that down to two, but I don't know WHO I want for our heroine! I think for a second I know, and then I turn a page and, nope. It's the other. Love the one you're with? Seriously, I don't know how I'm going to wait for Andromeda's Reign, the next book in the series. I think I need to tie Kristie down until that book is published. I NEED it.

Mena NEEDS one and WANTS another. The one she needs, needs her back. The one she wants, wants her back. They both love her. I think I remember her expressing love to someone, but it wasn't either of them. It was an amazing friend who gets his day in this book.

Speaking of him, he's the fourth one I fell in love with, and I'm BEGGING you, dear Kristie, to give the wolf with his sorta-human love interest their own book...at LEAST a novella. Pleeeeeeeeease?

Okay, back to the main characters. There is no cliffhanger, but you will be left needing the next book like your next breath. Thankfully, you are given a sneak peek into it, as well as a look inside a few other books by KH and Anne Conley (who really added some AWESOME steam to this book...I hear she wrote the sexy parts).

Oh! Oh! I almost forgot! There's a prequel to this book called Accepting the Moon. If you've already read it, there's no need for a re-read. You'll be reminded of enough stuff to remember what you need to know. If you haven't read Accepting the Moon, be sure to read that first. You'll be missing out if you don't.

I was given a copy of this book by KS Haigwood in exchange for an honest review. Honestly? Prepare to laugh your guts out. One word: Peanut.

Midnight Moonrising is quite a roller coaster ride, right from the very first page.

Accepting the Moon, the prequel, introduces the world that Mena inhabits, complete with vampires and werewolves, even though she was completely clueless to that little fact. When the story moves into Midnight Moonrising, it opens at Mena's dead husband's funeral, which coincidentally she killed, but every "human" not aligned with the pack or the vampires is unaware of that fact.

From there, the story moves right along into pack dynamics and how the vampires fit into this new warless era, now that Mena has announced that her pack will no longer be a part of the vampire vs. werewolves war. It is quite fast paced, which is something to enjoy when it comes to the complex interconnected workings of Mena's story.

I also have to admit that I couldn't stop smiling when Phoenix popped into the story. I absolutely love his character, and he just gets hotter in this book. Which I wasn't sure was possible, but I'm so happy to be proven wrong.

When the theory of a Moonrising wolf was introduced into the story, I was a bit taken aback, which I'm sure was Conely's and Haigwood's intention. I had thought that each werewolf was able to talk to their wolves and that it wasn't a big deal. I was completely wrong, and I was actually glad about that. If there is one thing this book isn't, it isn't unpredictable in the least.

When Ace was brought into the story line, I couldn't stand him. I love the thought of Phoenix and Mena together, so I was quite upset at the realization that Ace was going to tear them apart. Honestly, I believe he'll try to do it even if it kills him. Anyways, I'm really not a fan of Ace, no matter how sweet he is to Mena, because I feel like he his motives for his actions are typically rooted in personal gain. But who knows, I could have my mind changed in the sequel. Maybe. I do have to say that I enjoy how he shakes things up a bit. That much of him is entertaining.

Overall, this book is one that you can't put down from start to finish. I have to applaud Conely and Haigwood on their mastery of this roller coaster of a book, because it certainly kept me hooked. I cannot wait until the sequel comes out.

This book was intense. So much going on. Mena has been bitten by a werewolf an has turned for the first time. Things aren't right with her and her wolf. She now Alpha of the pack because she killed the alpha, her husband Marc. He was the wolf that bit her. She know nothing about being a werewolf.
She finds herself drawn to Phoenix, King of the Vampires and Alex Rhodes the police detective on the murder case is also in love with her. Very intricate plot going on. It is the first in the series but it has an awful cliffhanger. I really liked it and will read next in series.

If you are not familiar with K.S Haigwood books, then this will be one of the most unique books you will ever read. If you are a fan of hers, then you will not be surprised that she takes the theme of evil versus good, enemy versus enemy and brings them all together for a common good. One difference for the fan or new reader is the addition of Anne Conley to this book.

The duo wrote a novel that will draw you into the plot early and refuse to let you go. Life will become nonexistent, chores left undone. Children will be begging for your attention but all you will be able to do is continue to read and turn the pages as you watch Mena, Phoenix and Alex try to figure out the mess they find themselves in after one tragic night.

Mena discovers her husband has cheated and she tries to leave. When he finds her on that dark raining night, she isn’t alone, Phoenix, the alpha of the vampires is there. Her husband has been harboring more than the secret of his affair, he is also the alpha of the wolf pack. When Mena is changed, she becomes the new alpha but all of the information she needed wasn’t provided. All she is sure of is she needs to figure out a way to lead this pack of wolves and combat against those that left in rebellion.

With Alex being the investigator into the murder of her husband, Mena’s wolf has a strong attraction to the human Alex, while Mena has feelings for Phoenix. K.S. and Anne created a plot that gives each character a set of pros and cons with each decision they have to make, intensifying the conflict and angst in the story. The goal was clear; the path to reaching that goal is going to be next to impossible. People are going to lose in this story, not many will gain but for the one who wins the prize, the risks may never outweigh the victory.

Brilliance that is the first word that comes to mind when I talk about the talent of these two authors. This book is for everyone, the lovers of vampires, wolves, shifters, love, loss and drama. Add a few witches, humans, crime, anger and pain and you have the recipe for this emotional vortex that will take you away from reality and leave you demanding for more.

Great start to a series. If you enjoy paranormal stories this is a really good one. Entertaining, interesting, and enjoyable story. Well written with some unique elements and twists.

It took me a bit to really get into the story. It just didn't pull me in right away and I started and stopped it several times. Little by little the story pulls you in until it grabs hold and keeps you listening until the end. I didn't realize there was a prequel to this book, I think if I had listened to it I may have been drawn into this book much sooner. I don’t think it's a must to listen to the prequel though.

Talk about a love triangle. This one is definitely interesting and complex. Not sure exactly how I fell about it though. Having to battle 2 sides of yourself (literally)that each want a different man is an interesting yet disturbing twist. Especially when you are not always able to control both sides of yourself and can't control what one side is doing.

Told through multiple POV's. Large cast of great characters. Does end in a cliffhanger.

Vampire's, Witch's and Werewolves all mixed up together in murder, revenge, romance, betrayal, action, suspense and twists you won't see coming.

Pyper Down did a good job with the narration. I think this is the first time I have heard her narrate a book. Pleasant voice. Clearly spoken. Nice even pace. Some really good character voices. Her male voices are not bad but could use a little something more to separate them. It was hard to tell at times who was speaking. Overall though easy to listen to for long periods of time, easy on the ears and enjoyable.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher.
