The adventures of Alix (being a Franco-Belgian comic book/graphic novel series both penned and illustrated by Jacques Martin, and as such, somewhat similar in both scope and style to Hergé's more universally and internationally known and recognised Tintin series) revolve around, recount the many exploits of and dangers faced by Alix, a young romanised Gallic Celt (who has been adopted by a Roman family close to none other than Julius Caesar himself, with the latter also often even serving as Alix' friend and mentor). Although the series has often and repeatedly been praised for its supposed historic accuracy, it must be stated that there are also (and unfortunately) more than a few frustrating and bothersome instances of major historic anachronisms presented, with young Alix occasionally encountering situations up to two centuries removed from his time, from his historic era (and although this did not bother me all that much when I read the Alix series, or rather when I read a number of the stories of the Alix series in German translation as a young teenager, this sorry fact does indeed rather massively annoy my more academically inclined adult self, and has certainly taken much of the shine and joyful anticipation off perusing Alix's adventures and exploits in its original French). I am still enjoying my reading experiences, but the historical inaccuracies do chafe enough to only consider even the first tale, Alix l'intrépride (Alix the fearless in English) with but three stars (although I must admit that the majority of the heavy duty historical inaccuracies do seem to appear more in the following stories and not so much in the first tomes).
In Alix l'intrépide, the main protagonist is introduced as somewhat of a traditional hero par excellence (of stunning physical appearance, muscular and blond haired, read generally accepted Western European good looks), supposedly fearless (although at times also foolhardy and rashly courting avoidable danger) but always devoted to justice and fair play. As a romanised Gaul (who was separated from his parents and sold into Roman slavery and then adopted by a noble Roman family), Alix's mixed background does at time cause him certain crises of identity, but it is also this which constantly fuels his desire and indeed his need to pursue and strive for social and personal justice for all. A historically interesting and always readable series of graphic novels, but since I have not to date managed to find ANY English language translations of Jacques Martin's Alix series, an at least intermediate level of fluency in the French language is both suggested and in my opinion even required, although the series has been translated into German, Dutch, Danish, Spanish, Portuguese, Finnish, Swedish, Catalan, as well as a few languages such as Icelandic, Indonesian and Greek that have only had a select few translations appear (and while indeed recommended to readers interested in historical fiction graphic novels, I do so only with the necessary and important caveats that violence is a common and indeed regular occurrence in Alix's adventures, in the books, and that the already mentioned occasional but massive historical inaccuracies and anachronisms might very well be both frustrating and potential much annoying to some).
And also, finally, I personally find the printed script of the presented text a bit too small and thus hard on my eyes, which not only somewhat interferes with my potential reading pleasure, due to the fact that my French is at present a trifle rusty, the small font size also does tend to make it somewhat more difficult to figure out unknown or not as well known vocabulary words (and grammatical forms) from context, definitely a bit annoying and actually rather frustrating (but issues with an often too small font size, that is generally my main complaint and criticism with regard to many if not most graphic novels and comic books, and with the Alix books, it really remains a very mild issue of contention and as such not something that would in any way stop me from reading and enjoying the remainder of the series, as the narrative, as the text is still and for all intents and purposes legible enough).

Furchtlos?
Den "Held" dieser Story, Alix, würde ich nicht als "furchtlos" bezeichnen, wie es der Titel andeutet. Er stolpert von einer Szene in die nächste, und hat immer das Glück, einen Freund zu finden, der ihn aus dem gröbsten Schlamassel rauszieht (einer davon ist sogar Julius Cäsar!). Zu einem Held gehören meines Erachtens auch einige Charaktereigenschaften. Doch Alix ist eigentlich eine völlig profillose Projektionsfläche für den jugendlichen Leser.
Letztlich kann ich diesem Comic dann aber doch etwas abgewinnen, und das ist die sehr gelungene Darstellung der Verhältnisse im römischen Reich zur Zeit des Ersten Triumvirats. Ich bin kein Historiker, und der Comic kein reiner Historiencomic, doch Bilder, Orte und Personen sind doch wohl schon recht nah an der Geschichte. Dahingehend ist dieser Comic ähnlich strukturiert und geplant wie die Keos-Reihe desselben Autors - viel Action für junge Leser in antiken Settings. Kein allzuschlechter Plan, und auch einigermaßen gut ausgeführt.
Wer die Knollennasen von Asterix und seinen Kollegen über hat, und trotzdem was über einen antiken gallischen "Helden" lesen will, und mit dem hässlichen maschinellen Lettering, für das man manchmal fast eine Lupe braucht, zurechtkommt, kann einen Blick riskieren.

There was nothing good about this book. The story was incessant action with the faintest thread of a plot and the main character was a soulless catamite who survived every episode due to the sponsorship of a fatherly protector. I was amazed to notice that in 65 pages of graphic novel, there were women in only 2 frames... I really got the impression this story was aimed at the aged pederast who liked historical adventures. I'm going back to Tintin.

Vuosina 1948-1949 Tintin-lehdessä jatkokertomuksena ilmestynyt "Alix peloton" (Egmont, 2015) on ihka ensimmäinen sarjan albumi, joka julkaistaan vasta nyt ensimmäistä kertaa suomeksi. Sarjakuvakerronta onkin hieman vanhahtavaa, melkein kaikki ruudussa tapahtuva ilmaistaan varmuuden vuoksi vielä tekstilaatikoissa. Seikkailu itsessään on ihan mukiinmenevää historiallista viihdettä, jossa juonenkäänteitä piisaa niin paljon että tarkkana saa olla.

La premier volume dans la série Alix. Je les aime tous. Je crois qu' ou on les aime ou on ne pes aime pas. Je ne crois pas que beacoup de gens en soient indifférents. Tout de suite on se trouve en lisant les histories dans le monde très bien et consciensuesement reconstruit des anciens romains et dans cette primière histoire parmi les parthes, qui, on l'oublie souvent posaient avec leur propre empire à l'est un défi redoubtable à l'empire romaine. L'hsitoire m'a fait penser a "Heros the Spartan" une serie anglaise que je lis quand j'étais très jeune il y a beacoup des années! Fascinant de Jacques Martin est sa sensibilité pour la beauté et son réfus, pour qulques uns perturbant, d'adoucir la reéalité. Ce que je regrette est son manque totale d'humeur. Pourtant, tout compte fait, je recommande cette serie à tous gens et bjeunes et vieux qui aiment bien les series de bandes desinées historiques. Si vous ne connaissez pas la série Alix, cette un régale que vous attend!

Alix, c'est un peu l'archétype de la bande dessinée d'autrefois. Des planches en quatre strips, des cases de texte écrit en tout petit, et, de temps en temps, un ou deux phylactères histoire de rappeler que "hé ! ho! On fait de la bd !" C'est carrément vieillot vu de maintenant, mais bon, l'histoire est quand même bien fichu, et quand on aime l'antiquité (peu présente en BD par rapport au médiéval ou au western pour ne citer qu' eux), on lit avec plaisir les aventures d'Alix, jeune esclave gaulois affranchi et ami de César. Les décors sont remarquablement recomposé et une documentation riche étaye le travail de Jacques Martin.
Ce premier épisode (paru en 1948 dans le journal Tintin !) commence en Mésopotamie, où le jeune Alix a réussi à échapper à ses maîtres Parthes. On suit alors les errances d'Alix dans un pays où Romains et Parthes se font la guerre.

First of the adventures of Alix, a comic book hero in the mould of Tintin, but in Roman times. It is less well known than Tintin, and although it has been translated into some other languages, there does not seem to be an English version. I read it in French. I suspect the reason it is less well known than Tintin is the lack of humour.
On the plus side, this is a high action story with historical breadth and very carefully researched and executed illustrations. The history is a touch strained in places, and later titles suggest it will become downright anachronistic, but it does well enough for a child's eye view on the Roman world. Indeed it does the illustrations exceptionally well.
Alix is a kind of Roman superman type (less obvious super powers, and a lot more luck but the general idea seems the same). He rises from slavery to an adopted Roman and friend of Julius Caesar. He makes many friends along the way, although some of the characterisations of that are a bit wooden. It is all a bit unrealsitic but good fun comic book stuff.
The level of French needed to read this is, in my opinion, higher than that required for reading some other French comic books, and there is quite a lot of text. I read it slowly with some long breaks. It was not captivating enough for me to sustain the effort, I suppose. However it was a worthwhile story.

C'est après avoir lu une vingtaine de tomes plus récents d'Alix que je me suis enfin procuré ce tout premier tome originellement paru en feuilleton dans le Journal de Tintin en 1948-49. Ce livre est très différent des autres. Tout d'abord il continent 64 pages au lieu des 52 habituelles. Ensuite le style de dessin est encore en cours d'élaboration. Les décors et personnages sont plus simplistes, et les vignettes plus petites et plus nombreuses (typiquement 15 par page), se focalisant sur les personnages plutôt que les décors ou paysages qui deviendront plus tard un trait caractéristique de la série. On sent que l'histoire a été écrite pour des planches hebdomadaires, comme l'action se déroule très vite et le suspense monte brusquement à presque chaque fin de page pour tenir les lecteurs en haleine. Une autre grande différence avec le reste de la série est le manque de recherche historique et par conséquent de nombreuses erreurs. Par exemple, il n'y avait pas de Colisée à Rome à l'époque de Jules César, le Cirque Maxime était alors en bois et pas en maçonnerie, et César ne fut jamais consul en même temps que Pompée. Mais malgré ça ce livre reste un incontournable pour les fans d'Alix.

De eerste Alex. Een slaaf in het Romeinse rijk met een bijzondere achtergrond. Hij wordt geadopteerd door een ex-militair die hem en zijn vader als slaaf had verkocht. En hij staat op goede voet met Julius Caesar. En hij is akelig eerlijk en dapper. De ideale schoonzoon. Hij maakt kennis met zijn 'Erbfeind'. Positief: De steden en landschappen zijn schitterend. Geschiedenis docenten zouden hiervan gebruik moeten maken. De personen zijn ietwat stijfjes. Het verhaal: veel toevalligheden die uiteindelijk tot eer en glorie van Alex uitpakken. Hij is een soort Latijnse Batman, onrealistisch eerlijk en dapper enz enz. Maar de tekeningen zijn mooi, alleen daarom al lezenswaard.
In gevechtsscènes valt op dat deze blijkbaar volledig bloedeloos verlopen.

Immersion dans la saga Alix pour la première fois de ma vie à presque 40 ans.
HOULA que c'est dense !
J'ai été ennuyée par la multitude de personnages qui m'a rendu l'histoire difficile à suivre. Il se passe énormément de choses, d'intrigue, dans ce premier tome.
Pif paf pouf, il en arrive des choses à ce héros voulu d'Alix !
La police d'écriture a vieilli et n'est pas forcément agréable.
C'est droit, c'est carré, c'est scolaire.
Ce premier tome m'a fait l'effet d'un James Bond de la Roma antique.
Je vais quand même essayer le 2ème tome, histoire de voir s'il est plus digeste. Il y a du potentiel, allons voir ce qu'il en a été fait.

C'est toujours un plaisir de se replonger dans ce classique de la bande dessinée. C'est un véritable péplum du neuvième art, on y reconnaît l'inspiration de Ben-hur aussi bien par l'esthétique que par le scénario. Les récitatifs abondant sont cependant peut-être un peu rebutant pour un lecteur contemporain, mais il s'agit de l'esthétique de l'époque, et cela devait participer à donner un ton plus sérieux et narratif à la série. Les reconstitutions historiques sont magnifiques, comme toujours avec Jacques Martin... Bref, à tous ceux qui veulent découvrir cet incontournable de la bande dessinée et se plonger dans l'antiquité romaine.

Tämä ihan eka Alix-albumi julkaistiin alunperin jatkokertomuksena 1948-49 ja se näkyy. Jokainen sivu (myös vika) päättyy cliffhangeriin. Se tietty tekee tapahtumista ja juonesta tempoilevaa, mutta on myös hauska seurata Martinin ratkaisuja cliffhangereiden aikaansaamiseksi.

Je n'avais jamais lu ce grand classique de la BD. Bien sûr on voit qu'elle est datée, le dessin comme le style d'écriture ne sont pas très modernes. En revanche, le cadre historique est bien rendu et bien documenté. L'histoire ne manque pas de rebondissements qui s'enchaînent sans aucun temps mort mais Alix échappe à tout, cela manque donc de crédibilité. Malgré tout j'ai passé un bon moment de lecture et je lirai d'autres tomes.

Juonellisesti tämä ei ole aivan näin huono (1 tähti), mutta oli todella hermoja raastavaa lukea "selitysruutuja", joissa kerrottiin mitä ruudun kuvassa tapahtuu. Outo tapa tehdä sarjakuvaa... jollen olisi saanut tällä Seinäjoen kirjaston Aikamatka-haasteen vaikeaa kohtaa kuitattua, olisin jättänyt kesken (ja tuskin olisin edes aloittanut...).

I am not sure whether this is the correct book I'm tagging.
The Alix #1 which I read was about Alix's journey into Egypt, to visit Luxor and Karnak. The illustrations of monuments recreated to look as they would have in their heyday was interesting to see.
