Mindwar #3

Game Over

Rate this book
Rick emerged victorious from The Realm twice. Is his luck about to run out?

After multiple trips in and out of The Realm, Rick is becoming a part of it—a direct connection point has formed in his brain. He’s now slipping back and forth in his dreams and has become linked to The Realm and its creator in ways no one anticipated.

That link is an asset in terms of what Kurodar is planning . . . but it’s absolutely detrimental to Rick personally. If he doesn’t destroy Kurodar and The Realm quickly, he’ll be completely absorbed by them. But destroying The Realm will mean destroying Mariel, and Rick is still torn by his love for her and his love for Molly. How can he lose either of them?

Meanwhile, there’s still a traitor in their midst. So even if Rick figures out what he needs to do, actually doing it will be exponentially more difficult.

MY BLOG: Melissa Martin's Reading List

That was a thrill ride. I really liked how the author portrayed the evil terrorist (Kurodar) in this book. This is the third book of the trilogy, but it can be read as a stand alone.

In this book Rick Dial has been into the Realm so many times that it sort of made a connection between him and Kurodar. Now Rick can enter the Realm in his dreams, and he doesn't particularly want to go to sleep, which I can't blame him. In this world not only does Rick have to find a way to take Kurodar out, he has to fight Harpies, Boar Soldiers, and Cobras. Yay! NOT..

 :

Rick also has a couple of friends in the game named Favian and Mariel. He's a little confused about Mariel because he feels like he loves her but he has a real world love named Molly. I won't spoil it and tell you what happens with those three, but it's sad, then sweet :-)

At one point in the book, Kurodar is talking to a man that was sent to kill him... like that's going to happen, but here is something that he says:

--->EXCERPT<---

Kurodar stopped laughing suddenly. Suddenly his tone was dark and seething. "I am at peace with nothing," he said. "I wake up in a rage every morning and go to sleep in a rage every night. Between waking and sleeping, I think of one thing only: vengeance, nothing but vengeance. "I am never at peace."

He's just evil to the core but when finding out where he came from and who his father was, I can see why.

Anyway, so Kurodar is slowly breaking into the world, which means all of the creatures are going to be coming through and cause some bad things to happen.

You know I really liked the characters in this book. I liked Victor-One, he was such a nice person. Of course I liked Rick's little brother and his parents too. Molly and her parents, Favian and Mariel and a few other people. BUT, there's always a but right? Victor-One finds out there is a traitor in their ranks. Why can't people just be good! Lol

Rick goes back in one more time to meet with Kurodar and another really horrific creature, but I'm not telling you what that is or what happens. It's just pretty much a happy ending, although there is a very sad part and we do lose someone. :-(

Overall, I really liked this book and look forward to more from this author.

Very satisfying conclusion to this trilogy. I love Andrew Klavan's books. This trilogy was my first foray into is YA fiction and it was terrific and extremely enjoyable to this OA (old adult).

Game Over was a fantastic conclusion to this trilogy!! I was surprised by some things, entertained, and satisfied in the end.

I liked how the book started out right away with the action and didn't let up until the end. The pages flew by and I ended up finishing the book in under 12 hours.

If you enjoy contemporary books with fantasy aspects, I recommend this book. I think you need to read the series in order, since they are connected. A very good read!

Summary: Game Over is the third and final book in the Mindwar series by Andrew Klavan. Rick has been in the Realm way too many times, and he is starting to suffer the consequences. When Rick wakes up in the real world, he has some injuries that he actually got in the Realm, and they're actually manifested in his physical body in real life. Which is not supposed to happen because the Realm is digital and when you get injured in the Realm it's not supposed to happen to you in real life. He's starting to also have these weird nightmarish dreams and any injuries he gets in his dreams, he wakes up and has them in real life. It turns out that last time Rick was in the Realm, he entered Real Life through the Breach, and when doing so, he and Kurodar's brains were connected for a brief moment. Kurodar now has a link between himself and Rick. I told you it would be a fatal mistake. Kurodar is now using that link to send his soldiers from the Realm into real life. And it's terrifying. The only way Rick can stop it is to kill Kurodar himself, and that's next to impossible. Kurodar can also control Rick in his sleep, and he's using Rick to do lots of bad things. That's the short of it. Essentially he's using Rick to hack into Commander Mars computer and figure out a lot of secret plans that he happens to have on his computer. Plans that actually involve a super deadly space missile. And that same super deadly space missile is one that Kurodar wants to hijack and blow up the world with. Not kidding. So the stakes are higher than ever before, and if Rick doesn't stop Kurodar soon, he might turn into a mindless zombie that Kurodar can control at his own will. But will he actually? You'll have to find out.

Worldviews: I’ll just say that I don’t actually know whether Klavan is a Christian author, (look at my first review of Mindwar for more details) but I have found some Christian morals and worldview in this book. There are some Christian professing characters who pray sometimes and ask God for help. Kurodar wants to be a ‘god’ (still) but you think he would’ve given it up after trying so hard and failing. Kurodar’s dad was also a high ranking officer in the Soviet Union’s secret police, and that definitely comes into play a lot more here.

Foul Language: No bad words. Some minor rudeness.

Violence: Most of the violence comes from Rick’s escapades in the Realm, so technically they aren’t ‘real’, but there is good description of fights and wounds. Rick also fights some creatures more on the grisly and disturbing side of the spectrum, so there’s good description of that as well as blood, killings, etc. I’ll also note again some more terrorist actions from Kurodar, like hijacking multiple planes and vehicles, kidnapping people, etc.

Romance: As I said in the previous review of Hostage Run, Rick was actually torn between Molly and Mariel, the person in the Realm that he met. But in a shocking twist of events...........

Whoops I can't spoil anything for you sorry. You'll have to read the book to find out yourself. Just know that there's nothing inappropriate.

Rating and recommended age level: I’m rating this 4 stars! This was a great wrap up to the series. Still fast paced and suspenseful. I actually struggled on whether to give this 3.5 stars or not because I feel like some of it ranged more on a zombie kind of story, and that’s not what it was in the first two books. But in the end I’m giving it 4 stars because the writing is just excellent. Klavan’s writing style in general is really good. As for the age level, I’m going to put 12+, just because there were a lot of well described (for lack of a better word) zombie like characters. Otherwise it was really good. A good ending to the series. I wouldn’t call it the best of Klavan’s works, but still good.

RESEÑA COMPLETA EN ESPAÑOL

Epic finale!

This book is a race against time -almost literally- because Rick has the hours counted to leave The Realm, and if he doesn't, he dies.

This is one of those trilogies that I'll love to giveaway to everybody if I had copies available. It's an amazing series because it has all the elements that make it addictive and almost impossible to put down.

I liked that the characters have victories and failures, as that's what made me could connect with them. The villains are so well constructed that it's almost impossible to find their weakness, so the story gets interesting with each page.

Another aspect that I loved was how the author gave a very spiritual side to the story; and indeed, I think that rather than being a novel about videogames and terrorism, it's an epic battle between good and evil, where faith in God is the key to winning.
The final book was amazing, and leaves no loose ends, but answers every question that was aired in the first two books.

This series is recommended for young people, but also for anyone who likes to live unimaginable adventures.

-I recieved a copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion-

This is a wonderful end to a marvelous series. Definitely a must read for virtual reality, sci-fi, Christian lovers.

Plot: How could I have missed all of the symbolism till this book?! I missed it the Mindwar. I missed it in the Hostage Run. I didn't get it till now! It shows how God wins in both the dark and the light, in the mind and in the world. God tore apart the darkness of the Realm that was trying to swallow Rick Dial. God tore it apart. This book also shows that what happens in the mind, can affect RL. When the Boars, Cobras, and Harpies came down and attacked them straight from Rick's and Kurodar's minds. Real life can be affected by the mind, the same way the real life affects our minds. But God wins. No matter what. How could I have missed this?

Rick Dial: A perfect example about how God takes a tragedy and turns it around. And how He takes your mistakes and makes them good again. Number 12 loses the strength in his legs in a planned car crash. Rick loses his faith in God, in his father, and locks himself in his room. Video-gaming on and on. Giving up. But he goes to the Realm, he goes there again and again because he knows that is what is right. And he doesn't give up. He gains his faith again and he grows in his faith. It is incredible.

Molly: Strong, independent, smart, loyal, caring. Pretty good female character. She stands up in the face of death. She actually had the guts to shoot Smiley McDeath ((P.S. What is his name?)). She stuck with Rick and Victor One through thick and thin. And ran away from her captors. A strong female character. And a Christian to boot!

Traveler/Professor Lawrence Dial: Thank goodness for an actual good, Christian father! I was really ticked off when he ran off with an old flame and ditched his family. But once I figured out the truth, I got ticked off with Rick for not trusting his father again. Traveler if the perfect picture of the peace God gives us and thank you Mr. Klavan for this good man. Staying with his family, even though he had to leave to protect them, and trusting in God. And Traveler didn't even lose his cool! This is really hard to find nowadays so thank you Mr. Klavan.

Mrs. Dial: She is the picture of patience and loyalty. Mrs. Dial trusted her husband even though he ditched her without telling her the real reason why. She trusted Rick when he shunned her and his brother and when Rick had emotional troubles. Mrs. Dial stayed with her family, and didn't run. She trusted her husband even though it looked like he had abandoned her. She trusted Rick even though he ignored everything and everyone. Again, thank you Mr. Klavan!

Raider: Raider shows the happiness and the energy God gives to us. Raider never doubted his brother. Raider was always full of energy. Raider always had a helping hand to give and always had that smile on his face. Cute kid.

Mariel: Mariel shows the ability to stand one's ground that God gives. She never wavered from her point, she was always strong and confident. Mariel was also able to help Rick grow in his faith. And she was selfless. She spent her precious energy on helping Rick. I really liked Mariel.

Favian/Fabian Child: Courage. People, especially young adults, have a lot of anxiety problems. But he sticks through and helps Rick even though Favian rather be in a little hole, safe and sound. Favian stands his ground, even if he wants to run. Showing us the courage God gives.

Victor One: Why did he have to die?! I really wanted him and Molly to get together! V1 was a great man, a great soldier. He fought even though he was dying. He stuck with them till the bitter end and he was a Christian. V1 was a good man!

Commander Mars: Pride. Mars showed us how pride can make one fall. Though, I feel bad for the man. It hurts being stabbed in the back. But his pride caused him to fall. And once he hit the ground, he was empty. Like Miss Ferris, without his pride they were nothing. They worshiped the ground on which Mars walked but when he fell, the end. Without God, we're empty.

Kurodar: Yeah, yeah, I know, I know. Baddie. But I feel bad for the guy. Never been introduced to love....Punished and humiliated....Abused and despised....It's got to hurt like a serrated dagger. I wish that he hadn't died. That, instead, they arrested him but that Kurodar was able to be introduced to love and God. A chance to get home. Really good villain though.

Kurodar's Father: How dare he! How dare he treat his son like that! And his own people! KGB.....Arrgh!

Mind Realm: The mind. Kurodar's mind. It is amazing how dark it is. How wrong and twisted. The place was very interesting: yellow sky, red grass, blue trees. But my favorite part was the graveyard. We all have that graveyard in our minds. Filled with things we want to forget but can't. The dark memories, the happy ones, the sad ones, the angry ones. We all have it. But whether or not we let God in...Now that's the question.

Downers:
Molly = Mariel - It seemed just like a way to keep Mariel from dying. I would have liked it better if Mariel was just a computer program.
Victor One's Death - Seriously? Was that necessary? Molly and V1 seemed better together than Rick and Molly. At least Victor One should have lived. I loved the guy.

I loved this book and the whole series. Thank you Mr. Klavan for this. An actual series that is clean. Thank you.

Rick Dial is back in this pulse pounding read from thriller writer, Andrew Klavan. The walls between The Realm and RL are fracturing, and Rick is compromised. Ever since the last battle, his brain has been linked to Kurodar's, and in his dreams Kurodar finds his way into RL.

Will Rick be able to stop him, and save Favian and Mariel--or will they be trapped in the Realm as it comes crashing down?

The conclusion to Andrew Klavan's thrilling Mindwar Trilogy had me hanging on to the last, wondering if Rick would be strong enough for the final blow.

I really liked how we got to see more of Molly and who she is and why Rick is so drawn to her calming spirit.

Rick is a discerning hero, always thinking of others and what he can do. I loved how he because a symbol of hope to his friends in the Realm. I like how his passion for right and wrong, has grown, yet he is still compassionate.

Overall, a wonderful read, well written and action packed to the end. Rick Dial is an admirable hero, he has grown into a man of conviction and strength, with a strong faith. A terrific conclusion to the trilogy. I would definitely recommend this read!

This time, there's no escape from The Realm.

The MindWar Realm is a computerized world created by a deranged terrorist named Kurodar. Built through a link between Kurodar's mind and a network of supercomputers, The Realm is a pathway through which the madman can project himself into any computer system on the planet.

Twice before, Rick Dial has entered the Realm as a Mind Warrior and come back alive. But now, something has gone terribly wrong. A connection has formed in Rick's brain that sends him hurtling into The Realm without his consent—and brings the Realm's monsters into the Real World.

As Kurodar works to turn Rick's brain to his own purposes, Rick's waking and sleeping life is ravaged by terrors he never imagined.

Rick knows he has no choice but to face The Realm's final and most powerful protector. But can Rick destroy MindWar without destroying himself and the people he loves?

The review for today is “Game Over- The Mindware Trilogy Book Three” by Andrew Klavan.

Meet our main character Rick Dial. He is the last of the Mind Warriors. A tall order for a young man with a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders. His job is to enter the Realm. This place is a gateway for which our villain, Kurodar, can enter into any computer on planet Earth. If that isn’t bad enough, a connection has formed inside of his brain. Due to this he can be tossed back into the Realm at any time without any notice. Something must be done before Kurodar gets a complete and utter hold on Dial to use him for whatever purpose he so desires.

Rick starts to being unable to determine what is real versus what isn’t. The people he meets in the Realm, are they friend or foe? Are they even real?

"You must go into the belly of the beast. You must learn what he does not know. You must face the horror he cannot face."

The third and final installment in the YA series of MindWar is as filled with action and the moral questions as ever. Young Rick is to fight the final fight - with darkness, both outside and inside of him.
The evil creature Kurodar finally has the power of mind to connect the real world and the MindWar Realm.
And there is a betrayer amongst the good ones.
The threat is real.

This is one swift YA where the things are fast and furious, full of action. I would call this setries the best Christian YA for the teenage boys I have ever read. Fights, knighthood of soul, sacrifice, the real strength...all is present. This can help to build the noble spirit of boy - in his way to a man.

Having said all that, I actually have one comment here - I feel that the patriotism present here in the book is a bit misplaced, a bit unrealistic.
And having said all that, I recommend this series, still.

I love Andrew Klavan as he is the author of one of my favorite books and one of my favorite series. However, I Hated Mind War. Idk what it was: the plot, the 3rd person narrative, or the pacing. Regardless, this final book in this series was its saving grace. I usually read books in less than a week, but it took me two to read the first book and just about the same amount of time to read the second. I basically forced myself to read them due to my respect for the author. And Im glad i did. While i hated the first book and disliked the second, I Loved the third and read it in two days. This book makes reading the series worth it.

This time the unexpected happens . After flying through the barrier the real world is invaded. And Kurodar has the ultimate weapon that could set the US on fire. And who is Mairal? Will this be game over for Rick or the bad guys?

This is a fast pace adventure. I really enjoyed it. A inspiring read! As always it is sad for a series to end. Can't wait for the next Klavan book!!

This series is a solid choice for teen boys who want zombies and video games and constant action, but whose mothers want their books to be clean and even faith-filled. Some romance in the third (this one), but they’re young adults, not tweens.

This series reminded me a lot of a Rick Riordan series. I don’t know if it is meant to be for youth, but the reading level and subject were much more suited to middle grade readers. It was decent enough, but I only picked it up because I think so much of Andrew Klavan’s podcast.

I powered through this series because I'd already bought all three books (which I don't do anymore, specifically because of experiences such as this one). Alas, I didn't care for it at all. It's a cool concept, but the execution leaves much to be desired, in my estimation.

Terrible writing, clunky and childish. Plus the writer is a misogynist, anti-feminist and it comes across quite strongly in how he writes about women.
Red flags guys, avoid this novelists books.
