Some people become a part of your life so quietly that you don't realize how much they mean to you—until they're gone.

Vihan Mehra believes life is something you build carefully. A career, a future, a five-year plan—and, somewhere in between, Akshara Sharma.

Akshara doesn't believe in five-year plans.

She believes in good coffee, spontaneous trips, terrible jokes, long conversations, sleeping in on Sundays, and enjoying life while it's happening. At Meridian Finserve, she and Vihan are colleagues. But somewhere between client meetings, lunch breaks, office gossip, late-night messages, and their almost-daily coffee, they become something much more complicated.

They become each other's person.

Vihan knows he loves her.

Akshara knows she cares about him.

But knowing what someone means to you isn't always the same as knowing what you want from them.

When Vihan's concern slowly turns into advice, and his love begins to feel like control, the easy friendship they've built starts to crack. Akshara wants the freedom to live life on her own terms. Vihan wants to protect her from regrets she doesn't believe she'll have.

Neither is entirely wrong.

Neither knows how to stop hurting the other.

Eventually, Vihan walks away—not because he has stopped loving Akshara, but because he hasn't.

Months later, distance brings them back into each other's lives in unexpected ways. A random message becomes a conversation. A conversation becomes a habit. And slowly, they rediscover the laughter, comfort, and effortless connection they once had.

But by then, life has moved on.

There is a new city. A new job. A new life.

And eventually, a wedding date.

Now Akshara has to face the question she spent so long

What exactly did she lose when she lost Vihan?

A love?

A friendship?

Or something that never quite had a name?

Almost Us is a warm, witty, bittersweet contemporary romance about friendship, timing, freedom, and the people who become unforgettable without ever becoming ours.

Because sometimes the most beautiful love stories aren't the ones that end with together.

Sometimes they're the ones that came incredibly close.

Almost.

Some relationships never get a name, yet they still become an important part of your life.

Almost Us follows Vihan and Akshara, two colleagues whose bond grows slowly through everyday conversations, coffee breaks, teasing, shared jokes, and the comfort of simply having each other around.

What makes their relationship feel natural is that nothing happens all at once. Their connection develops through small moments, making it easy to understand how friendship gradually becomes something deeper.

The story becomes more emotional as their paths begin to separate. Instead of ending their relationship with bitterness, Vihan looks back at their memories with gratitude for the friendship, laughter, mistakes, and everything they learned from each other.

The little details the notebook, photograph, coffee conversations, and their ordinary office moments give their relationship a sense of familiarity and make the ending more meaningful.

The writing style keeps the story easy to follow and makes Vihan and Akshara’s bond feel natural. Their interactions add warmth to the story and make their relationship more engaging. A few conversations could have been clearer about who was speaking, but it was only a minor issue.

Almost Us is a story about timing, connection, and the people who become a beautiful part of our lives even when they don't stay forever.

Almost Us is the kind of romance that quietly sneaks up on you. Instead of making Vihan and Akshara’s relationship about dramatic declarations and instant love, the story lets their connection grow through everyday moments—coffee breaks, office conversations, inside jokes, late-night messages, and the comfort of simply having one person who feels like home.

What makes the story especially relatable is that neither Vihan nor Akshara is completely right or wrong. Vihan’s love comes with a desire to protect, but that concern slowly begins to feel restrictive to Akshara, who values her independence and wants to experience life without constantly worrying about making the “right” choices. Their differences create the kind of conflict that feels painfully real because sometimes love isn't enough when two people want different things from life.

There’s a lovely bittersweet quality to Almost Us. It captures the strange ache of meeting someone who becomes incredibly important to you, only to realize that timing, choices, and circumstances don't always fall into place. The story is warm, conversational, and emotional without becoming overly dramatic, and the idea that some relationships can be deeply meaningful even when they don't end in a conventional happily-ever-after stayed with me.

Almost Us by Mayank Mishra is the kind of romance that quietly stays with you long after you finish the last page.

Vihan and Akshara’s relationship begins with something beautifully ordinary; office conversations, shared coffee, inside jokes, late-night messages, and a friendship that slowly becomes much more. But their biggest conflict isn’t the absence of love; it’s the difference in how they understand it. Vihan wants to protect, while Akshara wants to live freely and make her own choices.

What I particularly loved was that neither character was portrayed as completely right or wrong. Their relationship felt real because sometimes love can become complicated when care starts feeling like control.

The story takes an unexpectedly bittersweet turn when they find their way back to each other, only to realize that life has already moved forward. And the ending—where Vihan and Akshara don't end up marrying each other—was perhaps the most emotional part for me.

Akshara’s quiet acceptance of what they had, what they lost, and what they could no longer have felt incredibly mature and heartbreaking.

Almost Us is not just about finding love. It is about timing, freedom, letting go, and accepting that some people can be unforgettable without becoming ours.

A warm, relatable and bittersweet read about a love that came almost close enough.
