Baker is sure there isn't anything worse than moving. Except being THE NEW KID. Sure, Gram gave him Waldo, a ventriloquist's dummy, for company-- but a puppet, no matter how funny it is, can't take the place of real friends. Baker is bummed.
Until he starts school and discovers that kids in Texas (cowboy hats aside) aren't as different as he thought. And that puppets just might be the key to fitting in.
I liked this book pretty well, although it wasn't anything really special. It's probably on a 4th or 5th grade level (but I haven't found it on any AR lists). I picked it off the shelf at the library hoping it would be humorous (always looking for funny books for David), but it was just a sweet easy going story about a boy who moves away from a big city to a small Texas town. He encounters almost no opposition in the story of any kind (it's kind of eerie how easy the move is for him). But I guess if you're trying to convince your 7 dash 10 year old to be happy about moving from a big city to a small town, this might be a good book to encourage their cooperation. Personally, I can't believe Harry Potter book 1 was turned down so many times, yet a book like this is in print. Hmmm.....
