I have never read a book by Beth Moore before but I have heard great things about them and her bible studies. With that being said, A Heart Like His was a very good read. You can tell David is one of Beth's favorite people of the bible by how meticulous she is in her writing . The book does a very good job of detailing his life and experiences and how we can learn from them. I liked how the study started with the prophet Samuel, took us through the mistakes of King Saul and then the life of King David. There's a saying, you can't know where you're going unless you know where you've been. And at first it may seem unnecessary to study Samuel and the Saul but they both played a important part in the life of King David.
The book also has review questions for every chapter. My suggestion is to make it like a bible study, read the chapter and answer the questions. I really appreciate with publishers include review questions or bible studies in their books, it gives you a chance to really meditate on what you're reading. And as a bonus there is a sample of the actually bible study for this book. My only gripe about the book is the tone/pace of the book. Its very stream-like and at times can put you in a restful state which can make it heard to complete.

My Ladies Life Group at church is currently doing this study for the summer. This series is from 1996, so Beth Moore had her big hair back then. I was in the 2nd grade when this series was released, and I had a funny hairstyle back then with big bangs. However, the teaching is very relevant, and David is one of my favorite characters in the Bible. This study is pretty long, but it's so worth doing! I'm sure my gals and I will be changed women after we finish this study, thanks to God's grace and precious words.

Wow! I just listened to this on cassette (yes, my car is a 1999 and has a cassette player) and Beth Moore was the reader and author . . . very interesting and powerful book about David . . . I learned much and truly enjoyed what God was teaching me through this book.

A Heart Like His takes a look at the life of David, which takes us on a study through several books of the Bible. By studying David's life we can discover how we too can be known as a person after God's heart.
David is first mentioned in I Samuel 16 when Samuel is sent to anoint the replacement for Israel's fallen king. At the time of his anointing David was just a shepherd. David was not the first choice of man or even his own family. But unlike humanity who judges on outward appearance and show, God looks into our heart, soul, and mind.
David's background as a shepherd prepared him for his future role as ruler. But God wasn't ready for David to assume the throne yet. David had to wait on God's timing. At his anointing the Spirit of God came upon David.
Saul is an important part of David's story. Where David was God's choice for king, Saul was the people's choice when the nation rejected God as their King. The people enslaved themselves to an earthly king simply because their neighbors had kings. Because the people rejected God the wrong man was made king. Instead of someone who would willing humble himself before God, they chose someone who was self-centered and desired the approval of man instead of God. Because he would not fear God Saul feared public opinion, the enemy, and even those to whom he was the closest to.
Often God allows us to be brought low so that we will call out to Him and He can raise us up to solid ground. We must follow David's example and cry aloud to God when we are in trouble, this will maintain our health - emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Tell God your troubles and your hurts; pour your heart out to God make Him your closest friend and confidant. We, like David, should long for God's presence. Only God can help us to overcome the obstacles in our life.
But David was not perfect. He was a fallen sinful human who made mistakes, but he learned from his mistakes and came to a better understanding and respect of God. But by disobeying God's command to not take many wives David proved Deuteronomy true because his heart was indeed lead astray from God. He began to shirk his duties as king. Then he sought his own self-gratification by committing adultery with Bathsheba - the wife of one of his soldiers who was away at war as David should have been. This sin was the culmination of several wrongs committed by David.
But we can learn from David's mistakes and avoid the trap he allowed himself to fall into. We need to fulfill the responsibilities God has given us. We need to set up a network of accountability partners and avoid extended periods of isolation. We also need to be aware of the progressive nature of sin and be prepared to stop it in its infancy so that it cannot develop roots in your heart.
Instead of falling into sin and being a willing participant we should follow Joseph's example - flee from the temptation to be wicked and to sin against God! When our heart is divided our life is in danger. We are susceptible to the temptations of sin. God wants us to trust Him and to give Him our whole heart so that He can keep us safe.
Whatever we treasure and desire is the proof of the state of our heart. If we desire to be like David we need to devote our hearts and souls to seek after God. David was a man after God's heart not because he was perfect but because he loved God.
A Heart Like His is an in-depth study into a life that seeks out God. Though David is the main focus, his is not the only life that is used to teach us how we are to live. I highly recommend this title for those who want a closer relationship with God. A Heart Like His is perfect for personal or group study, with review questions in the back of the book for each chapter.

This is a wonderful survey of first and second Samuel detailing the events in the Life of David. There are so many positives this book contains. I glean quite of bit of information just from Moore's personal insights into the scriptures she surveys. As always with Beth Moore, she is quite thorough in her references and lists them as well.
A HEART LIKE HIS is a great title for this book because as the author so elegantly shows the reader, studying the life events and heart attitudes of David, is eerily and significantly reminiscent as studying those of the Lord Jesus. Furthermore and much more important in my opinion, is how Moore possesses the uncanny ability to relate these events and attitudes to the life of the reader.
Although not as in depth as her character studies such as the beloved disciple John for example, A HEART LIKE HIS most definitely inspires one to continue onto to her character study of David. I do think this is one of her earlier studies, and if you have done any of her later studies, I think you would agree Beth Moore has matured as a teacher. Not to take anything away from A HEART LIKE HIS because it most definitely is worth the investment in terms of money and time.
The only reason why I did not give this a five star rating is because I listened to the CD version of the book and it seems a bit too quick for it's own good. There is so much presented that another disc or so would have really helped in slowing down the amount of information per second. That being said, I already have listened to it twice, and I'm sure many more times to follow.

I want to start off by saying that I am a HUGE Beth Moore fan, I have done almost all her Bible studies, but cannot figure out why she re-did this study. I would much rather her work on something new than for her to keep re-doing studies that she has already done over 10 years ago. If you want to re-do the videos as you don’t like your Texas big hair in them, then re-do those, but there is no need to fix something that isn’t broken. Of course, that is my opinion and that is what this is all about. I did the Bible study by the same name from Beth Moore over 11 years ago and really enjoyed it. My new group wanted to do the updated version of this Bible study by again, Beth Moore, this one is re-titled and revised David Seeking A Heart Like His. So I decided to read the book as well. I am not even sure why Beth Moore updated this, as it reads almost word for word what the new Bible study says. I think I would have enjoyed this a lot more had I not been doing the Bible study at the same time. Yes, if you do not do the study, all this stuff will be new to you, if you are doing the study and do better with repetition, by all means read this book.

This is a 10 week study about David. Too bad it took me about 55 weeks to complete. I am glad it's done, though!
I think the study itself was quite good, and it's my own fault I didn't get more out of it, since I let myself spread it out too long. I'd wait and try to cram in an entire week's worth of study into a single day. The last 3 weeks of the study or so, I actually read a day's worth of study per day, and that was a lot better. Less intimidating and more enjoyable. I also retained more since I had less to learn and process each day. I wish I had done the whole study one day at a time, as it was intended.

I really liked this book.. even though we all know stories about David and his good, bad, and ugly life. I absolutely fell in love with him because of this book, and I can relate a lot to David I think we all can in some way and this book is really good and showing you who David really is and how he truly was a man after God's own heart, and how much God loved David even through his mistakes and his mess. It helps you to see that God loves you through your mess, and how to have a heart like David did, or even save yourself from the pain before it gets worse. It's an easy read and I recommend this book :)

I really enjoyed this bible study through the life of David. Beth Moore does a great job (as always) of delving deeply into the text of the story and helping readers to understand not only the characters, but the history and the context of the time period. I grew to really admire David because of his passion, courage, and faith and found him to be refreshingly imperfect--a helpful discovery, since I too am flawed. David's honesty with God challenged me as well as encouraged me. Another great study from my favorite Bible teacher!

Beth Moore's easy conversational tone makes you think that this may be a light read. Don't take this one lightly. She explores the life of David, "a man after God's own heart." New Christians and seasoned Christians alike will find plenty of thought-provoking reflections in this look at the life of King David. This is one to read with journal in hand. Although he lived in ancient times, we find much about David's life to parallel our own. "A Heart Like His" is a great addition to anyone seeking Christian spiritual growth.

This was an audiobook read by the author which I looked forward to but eventually feel as though I was listening to a Jr. High Sunday School teacher. It wasn't so much because of her voice but the writing and I think this particular book is geared more towards new Christians. I don't want to go back and touch upon the basics. I did enjoy the detailed account of King David's life but the author seem to jump into momentary rabbit holes on the basics that all Christians should have an understanding. I am always looking for more "meat" in Christian books.

A Heart Like His tells the story of David, and his journey from shepherd, to refugee to King of Israel.
The book does not portray David in all his glory, but shows the ups and downs, goods and bads, and that makes it a good read.

Amazing study of David, especially if you can get past her hair and clothes on the videos (and I mean VHS videos!). Even though it was written/filmed in 1996, every study is still totally relevant and makes you think. I'm not a big fan of her "poetry," but I learned a lot.

May 1, 2010This was my first Beth Moore book. I absolutely fell in love with her heart for the Lord. It made me wonder at the relationship between King David and the Lord. It also started a spark of desire within me to know God in that way, to desire Him more. I highly recommend it.

I read this book devotionally as I read through 1 & 2 Samuel. Beth Moore has a way of bringing scripture to life and it greatly enhanced my understanding of these books. Very practical and easy to understand.

August 3, 2016I did this study along with a group of women at a local church. If you make the commitment to do the homework needed, you will find the study of great benefit. Select a time of the year when you will be able to follow through. It is worth it.
