I have done several of Beth Moore's studies over the years and I've never been disappointed in any of them. When I finished my last study and was looking for another one, I was torn because there were so many available that I wasn't sure which one I wanted to do first. I agonized over it the last weeks of the study I was doing and finally narrowed it down to a couple of studies. In the end, I decided to go with this book on the recommendation of my mom who said it was one of her favorites. I was a bit skeptical about it because most people are familiar with the patriarchal narratives and/or know the stories fairly well so to me it seemed like there wouldn't be much new or that I could relate to but I'd give it a try anyway.
I couldn't have been more wrong about what to expect in this study. Yes, it does go through the lives of each of the patriarchs but it does so in such a way that you really feel like you know these people. She breathes new life into these families until you see them not as one dimensional characters in a narrative like reading a history book but as living, breathing human beings with desires, fears, failings, and strengths. She doesn't gloss over the failures either, she's not afraid to confront head on that some of the actions that are represented are wrong and show a lack of faith or bad decision. She's not afraid to say they're acting like spoiled brats or to give them credit where it's due.
This Bible study really challenges you to see these men as men with their strengths and failings, their glorious moments of faith and fearless trust and their crushing moments of defeat and fear. It brings all new life to these stories and I was surprised that how much I had missed even though I thought I knew these stories well. She digs deep into the narrative and challenges the reader to see what is really happening and make connections across the pages of Genesis that I would have never found on my own. I would highly recommend this workbook to anyone because it meets you on so many places and challenges you.
