I finished this book last night, well actually into the morning hours. I had trouble getting to sleep because I was so excited by the whole thing. The writing is poetic at times, but in a comfortable natural way. My head was spinning through the entire book down to the last page, it was like a roller coaster ride of emotion. Action, intrigue, suspense, romance, thrills, mystery, beauty, this book has it all. Or possibly I am just strange. I found myself wanting to highlight my favorite parts. The book delves into issues of human nature and religion surprisingly. But in no way does the book ever question itself. It shot like an arrow straight for it's target with no stopping until it pierced my heart. Excellent.
A village witch raises a young woman to entrap the dissipated lord of the manor in early 19th Century England. Throw in a murder at a dinner party and a lynching, just for fun. In the galaxy of just-plain odd Gothic novels that are the hallmark of Jill Tattersall, this is one of the oddest...and shortest, thankfully.
Really disappointed with this one. I've read many, if not all, of her other books, and this one definitely doesn't stand up with them. The writing felt very scattered - almost juvenile - the characters unlikable. I'll admit, I couldn't finish it, so perhaps it eventually got better.
