Tormented lives collide in a deadly wilderness

Billionaire Jacob Chandler’s life is already unravelling when he becomes a fugitive in the rugged Sierra foothills. In the same hostile chaparral, sixteen year-old Amy discovers freedom demands more from her than bondage ever has. Tess, a pitiless schemer, grabs at what she thinks is owed her. Bryce, an abusive sociopath living off the grid, will do anything to keep his tiny domain in tow.

When Jacob finds Amy cowering under Bryce’s upraised belt, he reports the abuse to authorities. Days later, Amy flees with the aid of Mercedes, an older girl who’s learned to survive in the wild since running away from the same abuser two years earlier. After Amy’s escape, charred human remains in a burned-out shack make Jacob the prime suspect in a murder. Unable to shake the nightmare of his granddaughter’s unsolved kidnapping more than a decade earlier, Jacob jumps bail to look for Amy—he’s determined things will turn out differently for this girl. The sheriff pursues him, believing Amy is part of a lie Jacob has invented to beat the murder rap.

Jealousy and mistrust alienate Amy and Mercedes, leaving Amy on her own to endure nature’s tyranny. As Amy wanders alone in the unfamiliar terrain, lightening sparks an out-of-control forest fire. While searching for her, Jacob takes a bullet through his arm, and his hopes for rescuing her turn bleak, but he’s not the only one hunting Amy. Tess needs her as bait to extort a long awaited payoff, and Bryce wants her dead.

This was an OK story about a girl who has been kidnapped since as long as she can remember, and lives with an abusive couple in an off-the-grid shack. She comes to the attention of the very rich man across the lake who tries to save her. There is violence, a wildfire, and all sorts of action.
