Rate this book

Daniel Goleman

Author of Emotional Intelligence and psychologist Daniel Goleman has transformed the way the world educates children, relates to family and friends, and conducts business. The Wall Street Journal ranked him one of the 10 most influential business thinkers.

Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence was on The New York Times best sellers list for a year-and-a-half. Named one of the 25 "Most Influential Business Management Books" by TIME, it has been translated into 40 languages. The Harvard Business Review called emotional intelligence (EI) “a revolutionary, paradigm-shattering idea.”

Goleman’s new book, Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence, argues that attention — a fundamental mental ability for success — has come under siege. Leadership that gets results demands a triple focus: on our inner world so we can manage ourselves; on others, for our relationships; and on the outer forces that shape our organizations and society itself.

His more recent books include The Brain and Emotional Intelligence, and Leadership: The Power of Emotional Intelligence - Selected Writings.

Nice book about what we have to do in our near future to make the world a better place, for us and for our children. Starting from the fact that we do not have to worry only for our kids but for all the children of the world, the Dalai Lama talks about his way of being in the world, a sort of Tibetan Mindfulness I can say, and then he starts to speak with Goleman about emotions, the famous "Kidness revolution" and the even more famous book by Thomas Piketty about capitalism and all the way it fails to change something for the better. Then it starts a long discussion about the way economy should change and try to include the wellness for the most of the people and not only for people who are already getting richer and richer, compassion is a very important word in this part of the book, because it helps the other and also us, giving a new meaning to our life. Considering our planet comes after and it shows how important it is not to exploit our resources, because as far as we know, there is not another planet waiting for us....

This is a very important book. The Dalai Lama explains the importance of empathy and education reform for future generations. His positivity and genuine belief in the world's opportunity for progress in the next thirty or so years is inspiring. Applying his teachings practically, to elements of society such as politics and economic systems, the Dalai Lama goes beyond conscious sentiment to truly encourage ACTION. Psychology studies consistently serve as evidence for many of the claims made, intertwining spirituality and science beautifully. This is one I will certainly reread and continue to draw teachings from. A truly amazing read, possible only as one result of a life led with deep compassion.

A, și încă o chestie interesantă: religia și știința pot face o echipă redutabilă.

It took me ages to read because I kept coming back to it but every time I did, I found I was inspired/enlightened/motivated. Was a good read to end 2018 on and into 2019.

A wonderful book! I pretty much love everything I read about, or by The Dalai Lama. This book talks about how we must take action as individuals to create a better world, even though we may not see the real changes in our lifetime. Every little bit of good we do adds up and eventually this world can be a more compassionate place. Don't feel that the world's problems are too big to be fixed by just one person. We- every one of us 7 billion people on this planet have helped to cause all these problems, so begin by going inward and learning to be a more compassionate person yourself, then take the actions that you can, every day and do the things you are able to do, even if it's as simple as doing something kind for your neighbor. Take action every day to show compassion.

Love this guy....lots of great ideas in here.... The political system is the not the problem it is the lack of moral principle that corrupts the system that is the problem. capitalism can only be a force for good if it is genuinely concerned about everyone. The success of an an economy should be measured in the well being of its people. Not our gdp our land wealth property or things. The ballooning wealth of a small percent drives up the gdp while the masses struggle. People want lasting happiness not just more land property and stuff. Money land wealth possessions cannot buy us love or fulfill us and make us happy. Too many of us sit on our private wealth and lands and do nothing of any moral substance that doesn’t directly benefit us. Worth a read

I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for a fair review.

Before reading the book, I didn't know very much about the Dalai Lama, and I had hoped for more biographical information than was included. And I didn't necessarily agree with all of the connections and extrapolations the author made. However, the book made me think - a lot. And it convinced me that I need to do more to make the world a better place.

Pick it up, read it, and think about it. And then go do something about it.

I wanted to like this book - I agree, in theory, with all its precepts, but gee it was dull. I wouldn't have finished it if I'd had anything else to read.

I think I should trust my reading instincts - I kept thinking, why is this book so awful? I should like it! But although the book is about linking science to ethics, on (p207) I discovered that the author wasn't checking all his facts. He told a little story about James Cook discovering Norfolk Pines and spreading the seeds because he thought they were ideal for ship's masts and the trees that resulted may save sailor's lives. Well, possibly he did do that, but there are scientific reservations about the ethics of the careless introduction of species (crown of thorns starfish, anyone?) and also, it turned out that Norfolk Pines are no good for ship's masts. They snap. So really not the best example to pick.

A Force for Good: The Dalai Lama's Vision for Our World by Daniel Goleman, NYT bestselling author of Emotional Intelligence invites us to write down our stories. The stories we tell ourselves can reveal where we are off-base: joy is not found in the persistence of our tragedies. Inner resources can appear in telling the stories.

There is so much I really loved about this book. It was not focused on religion but instead talked about moral accountability and compassion outside of religion. I didn't know much about the Dalai Lama before I read this book. It was informative and engaging with a challenging and inspiring vision for how the world and human interaction could be.

How to be a force for good. Live a compassionate life. Start with yourself, move on to your family, neighbors, schools, coworkers, city, county state, nation.

Vote with your wallet. Support companies that do good in the world

It will be a start, but unless the "1%" also embrace the cause how much change can there actually be?

Very nice, optimistic and motivating book. Dalajlama believes the change of the society cannot be done by governments. It is up to us. We must change ourselves and become better people. It also shows that everyone of us has the power to do good and lead by example. Everything counts :)

As Buddhist this book is a guide that reinforces our compromises with the humanity and the world.
I enjoyed reading the advices and take a lot of notes about the Dalai Lama’s message.
Just mentioning some of the most relevant content is the book are:
1. “Many people are just complaining about what is wrong in the world but not making any effort to change it”.
2. Human happiness is interdependent. Our own happiness is very much related to that the others”

There is a lot of valuable information that I really recommend read and apply this book advices in your life.

I do not recommend. I felt like I was reading articles from a newspaper. It looked like the author was more obsessed with praising Dalai Lama then actually explaining his vision.

I won this book in a giveaway by Bloomsbury publishers and was most grateful. I've never read anything on the Dalai Lama but whatever I've heard or picked up regarding his teachings/philosophy on life resonated strongly with my own spiritual beliefs as a Muslim and as a Muslim who has spent some time studying the spiritual teachings of Mawlana Rumi. I was interested to read then, this book.

It's a good book especially for someone who is newly considering broadening their horizons beyond the material and the rat race that life can become, with or without religion. I liked that about this book, it gives all the teachings of all religions: be kind, be truthful be compassionate, live in the moment but plant seeds for tomorrow etc etc. I liked how the "science" behind the practices is also explained. Again I was familiar with some of these things as a psychotherapist but it was interesting to see spirituality and science combine. Certainly in my experience the two are not mutually exclusive. The only reason why I knocked two stars off is that a) the practises were not new to me and as such although I got a new perspective or a reminder, I was expecting more (I appreciate that may not be the books fault as the message of the Dalai Lama is obviously quite universal) and b) there were times in the book where the praise of the author of the Dalai Lama was a little to sycophantic for my tastes. But that's just me.

If you're new to spirituality or the teachings of the Dalai Lama this is a great book. It's also great in showing how universal certain teachings are and thus even if you have strong religious beliefs of your own, you can still benefit from the positive practises endorsed in it. I would definitely read more about the Dalai Lama and his teachings thanks to this book now.

The book started out trying to prove to the reader how great of a man Dalai Lama is by giving descriptions how many people go to listen to him and what he has done or said. So my first impression wasn't very good. You shouldn't introduce a great man by saying how great he is. Reader should be able to decide that based by the content. Fortunately the more I read the better the book got. I liked the philosophy in general although some aspects were quite naive in my opinion. Like teaching gratefulness to children in my opinion ritual ways was going to make humanity more grateful. I am a huge believer that education is the key to change in society but I don't think that is the method. This is only one example of course. There were lots of more realistic ones too in the book.
The intro says that Dalai Lama gives his vision of the future world and gives practical tips, so I was secretly hoping for an utopia and what are its methods but lucyly or not luckyly I didn't get that. It was more of a collection of general principles of being and acting beginning from developing good within yourself to organazing in groups to solve societal problems. There was a lot of ideas that I supported already previously so getting some backup to my beliefs was nice and motivating.

What a remarkable man, the Dalai Lama is - wise, humble, intelligent, compassionate and forgiving. Goleman (the author of Emotional Intelligence) attempts to articulate the philosophy and teachings of the Dalai Lama through anecdotes, interviews and seminars. What he ends up with is a coherent statement of beliefs that is organized into topics easily understood by the reader.
Essentially this great man wants us to think and act non-violently, demonstrating compassion for all people and concern for the environment. He urges us to take a long view of history but to act now - plant the seeds for a better world even if we will not be here to see those seeds bear fruit. He remains optimistic about the future and recommends that children be taught daily to express gratitude and learn the tools of empathy.
You certainly feel more hopeful by the end of the book, and more determined to play out your role in making the world a better place.

A bunch of successful scientists and journalists travel around the world giving speeches, shilling their books and meeting Dalai Lama. And Dalai Lama says: "Compassion". Science agrees. What about our emotional well being? - Compassion, of course. What about economy? - Compassion. Politics? - Compassion. Science agrees, Dalai Lama is pleased.
I'm honestly baffled how hollow this book feels to me, considering its subject. Every page throws a dozen names and studies and stories at you, coming to the same old conclusion over and over again. And if you know who Dalai Lama is, if you're familiar with buddhism - there's nothing in this book that you don't already know. A 10 minute Youtube video is probably more informative (and time saving) than this.
Main problem here is that this is not a book about Dalai Lama's teachings - it's a glorified marketing brochure about power of friendship.
Oh, and Dalai Lama says he's a Marxist. Really, Tenzin-kun? Jesus Christ.

This is a nice book and I feel bad to give it only two stars, but it just did not grab me enough to finish it and only read about half. Had I not read other books by/about the Dalai Lama, I might have felt differently. Besides instead of being uplifting, I found it a bit depressing. Even though I am not at all a shopper, it made me wonder things like, "What companies am I supporting when I buy x, y, or z?" "Should I be more conscientious?"

The book did give me two gifts. One is that I learned that loving kindness practiced with compassion takes away the pain generated by empathy. This is a major gift because I am the epitome of the person who runs away from pain that I cannot help. Two is that it prompted me to volunteer my professional services to a homeless shelter. I cannot carry the weight of the world on my shoulders, but maybe I can do some good.

A balanced, unifying, compassion-filled view and vision for the world by His Holiness, the Dalai Lama...elegantly compiled from interviews by Daniel Goleman. Touching upon events in antiquity, events and learning in the Dalai Lama's life, and aspirations for the future, this work reveals the revered Buddhist monk as a man of science, a great statesman, and a true leader of people. A fitting tribute to the greatness of this simple man who to this day labors for peace and happiness not only for the Tibetan people, but for everyone and every living thing in the world.
