Period Piece is the debut memoir, part one of a two-part series, from new author Amelia Chameleon. Her story follows the trials and tribulations of a young girl growing up under the dark cloud of her menstrual periods. While most teen girls worry about fashion and hairstyles, Amelia is constantly thinking about her periods and how the next one is going to ruin her week, again, this time. Told with humor and a little bit of cussin’ Amelia shares what it’s really like to come-of-age with an “unwanted third-wheel” in every relationship: her period.
I read this book till my iPad battery died then I, sadly, had to try to fall asleep. I finished it on the second night. I guess that’s one way to tell you I enjoyed it. Which I really did!
This book is not your standard memoir novel with first love, boys, kissing, and periods. Well, it is, but in a way that makes you feel like you’re there, too. I felt like one of the gang, whether I was a child with her at daycare making chocolate boob pops or a friend watching her try pot for the first time. The author has an easy way of writing so that even though she goes through some awful stuff, you’re there with her and you somehow know it’ll be okay. She is also really, really funny. I cracked up several times while reading it!
By the time I finished the book, I was wanting more. I appreciate how open the author was with her story. I may have been drawn to her book as well, since I share a similar backstory of growing up poor in SoCal. Oh, to be young and meet boys at Disneyland again! Now, when I want to take a trip down memory lane, I’ll read Amelia’s story. Even if you’ve never lived in SoCal, if you’re a girl (or woman) over the age of 16, you can’t help but relate to this memoir.
