This is a collection of stories about men and women and children who stumble upon crossroads. Their stories are parable, they are allegory, they are realism and short fiction -- and they are stories that will enter into you and make you part of them, so that the mystery and the brightness, the living and the dying, the searching and the praying, the love and the anger and the majesty become your own. It is another morning and another place, a rich and penetrating landscape of the spirit. Seventeen of these stories have been published over the past ten years in periodicals, the other eight have never been in print before and were written by the author especially for this edition.
Murray Pura was born and raised in Manitoba, just north of Minnesota and the Dakotas. He has published several novels and short story collections in Canada, and has been short-listed for a number of awards. His first books to be published in the United States are the inspirational works Rooted and Streams (both by Zondervan in 2010). His first novel to debut in the USA is A Bride’s Flight from Virginia City, Montana (Barbour), which was released January 2012. The second, The Wings of Morning, will be published by Harvest House on February 1. Both of these novels center around the Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Discovered this book of short stories at a retreat center and it was just the thing i needed to read. The nice thing is that you can read each story in a short sitting. Pura is a good story teller, nothing is trite or sentimental. Some relish in the dramatic, like the story that is the title of the book but the drama fit the story very well. Overall I really liked the tone of the various pieces and that they are mostly set in Canada. Particularly liked the College Professor story, the one called Wick and Boj.
Eugene Peterson endorses the book and it is published by Regent Bookstore in Vancouver. I would give this a 3.5 stars if the rating system allowed.
