I had the honor of reading this beautiful book early, and somehow I got so wrapped up in the story that I completely forgot to sit down and write my review right away-which honestly might tell you everything you need to know. 🤍

This book was every bit as good as the first, and Elizabeth tied up the loose ends of this story so beautifully. After all of the adventure, heartache, turmoil, and growth these characters experienced, the conclusion felt incredibly rewarding. The ending genuinely had me crying simply because I was so happy with the way everything came together.

But what makes this series so special to me is its depth. These are not surface-level stories. There are so many layers woven throughout them, particularly through the allegory, which has easily been one of my favorite aspects of the series. Elizabeth tackles important and sometimes difficult topics while handling them with so much thoughtfulness and care.

I also loved the balance between our softer FMC and morally gray MMC. Both characters experience meaningful growth, but his journey especially stood out to me. Watching him come to faith and then begin the ongoing process of sanctification was beautifully done.

What I appreciated most was that his faith didn’t suddenly transform him into a completely different character. He is still strong and rough around the edges. He still struggles. He still has things to learn. But we get to see his heart changing and his faith shaping the man he is becoming. It felt genuine, gradual, and incredibly rewarding to watch.

There is so much packed into this series-faith, redemption, adventure, difficult topics, beautiful character development, and an allegory that gives the story even greater meaning.

I truly think this will remain one of my favorite series for a very long time. Elizabeth created something incredibly special with these books, and I know I’ll be recommending them for years to come. 🤍

If you haven’t read this series yet, I HIGHLY recommend it!

I enjoyed this no spice Christian romantic fantasy. It is a fairytale retelling of Aladdin set in the modern world. Its take on genies and their wishes is unique. Now, this is the conclusion to a duology saga. Genie (book 1) completely hit it out of the park, and I enjoyed reading this conclusion to the saga. The Christian elements in this book – especially with spiritual warfare and a journey to faith – are very strong and I think that is a big draw for this book. There are a lot of twists and turns in the romance and fantasy aspects of this read. Having these two start as enemies was unexpected, but played well. We were gdefinitely taken on a journey here. The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 3.

Content Warnings: Torture, Blood, Human Trafficking, Drunkenness, Slavery, Death, Attempted Murder

I received an ARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

God has the ultimate control over our lives

Genie ended on quite the cliffhanger. I finished this book within 24 hours of starting it. The same emotional depth and character growth that characterized book 1 shone brightly in book 2. We see much more of Addin this time than Jasmine, but both get plenty of page time during which their stories are fully developed. This book took everything to the next level. The stakes are higher with the conclusions of unfinished plots from Genie. I'm limited in what I can say due to spoilers, but let's just say it was incredibly well-written.

Surrendering control is never easy, whether to human masters or to The Master (God). I loved the way that the author brought Addin to faith in Christ while still showing the struggles that show it is not always a magical transformation but requires constant choice to choose to trust in God. When the evil being who enslaved them seems like he's winning, the genies and reader are reminded by a still, small voice of who really holds the power in this world. The Christian messaging is on point and made me reflect on my faith.

Human trafficking becomes even more prominent as Jasmine is no longer just working to support victims but has become one herself. Accordingly, the risk of sexual assault is more present, and there are characters connected to Xavier Chavez who have been regularly assualted. As I said with Genie, Master does not shy away from making clear the stakes involved. Billionaire mafia-like characters lead to morally grey characters who slowly lose the greyness as their faith deepens.

There is also a lot of tension, and characters notice each others' rather attractive bodies, leading to passionate kisses and a little innuendo at times. However, the book is no spice and doesn't need to rely on graphic detail to convey the emotions of the characters. While Addin gets drunk once and swears frequently, he ultimately gives up both as his relationship with Christ strengthens. I highly recommend this book to readers who want real stories with raw emotion and faith-based elements.

Age Range: 16+

Language: Mild. 9 uses of 'hell/Hell.' 4 uses of 'damned.' At one point, an "sl-" is given but not finished, so whether it is a derogatory insult or 'slave' is unknown. There are a handful of substitute words for stronger curse words.

Romance: Moderate. There are a slightly more passionate kisses and hugs. Jasmine and Addin both notice how physically attractive the other is.

Violence: Moderate-Heavy. Characters are brutally whipped, murdered (stabbed and shot), tortured, kidnapped, enslaved, and trafficked.

Mood: Moderate-Heavy. Just like in book 1, Master tackles modern day slavery, which is inherently a heavy topic. Addin and Jasmine's relationship helps keep the tone from becoming too heavy, but the overall atmosphere is more tense and emotional. Modern day politics are mentioned, including ICE.

Worldbuilding: Solid. The book takes place in our world but with a bit of magic added with Genie's magical abilities.

📚 Series: Genie (Book 2)
🎭 Genre: Fantasy

🥜In a Nutshell: Picking up 5 years later, we find out what happened with Jasmine and Addin. The story continues for them involving false murder charges, revenge, and a curse.

✅ Aladdin Retelling
✅ Role Reversals
✅ Family Curse

This second installment in the duology picks up five years later and all of the characters' lives have been flipped upside down. I can't go into too much detail on the plot because I don't want to spoil Genie (the first book in the series that you definitely want to read first). I will say that this one was filled with drama and action for all of the characters. Some of the side characters from book 1 have more of a story in book two. Though truthfully, I didn't care much for what happened with Charlie and Chase. Mainly because I think it changed my opinion on those characters that I really liked in the first book. Also, this book hit a bit of a lull for me in the second half, not because it was boring but because it felt like there was too much going on and I didn't feel as connected to the story as I did in the first half. But one thing that I think stepped up in this second book is the faith content. It was soooo good in this one, really showing the characters struggling in their faith and persevering while trusting God. They learned to let go of what they couldn't control and trust God instead. All in all, I really enjoyed this conclusion to the series and everything wrapped up nicely. While it felt like a lot was going on at times and some characters weren't as enjoyable this time around, I still had a great time and this has been one of my favorite duologies that I have read. Can't wait to read more from Elizabeth Joy in the future!

I received Master as an ARC, and I literally could not put it down.

Elizabeth Joy’s series of this amazing Aladdin retelling is my favorite retelling.

Master is full of faith, twists and turns, no-spice romance, swoony moments, and so much more

I really loved Jasmine and Addin in this book. There character development was so good!

And of course, I can’t forget to mention Charlie and Chase! I absolutely loved them in this book.

Reading Master, I literally gasped throughout the whole book. And my eyes grew so wide I thought they were going to pop out of my head.

If I could reread this book for the first time, I would! It was that amazing!

For 5 years, things were different. They weren’t the dreams of fairytales.

One thing I love about Master is how faith was woven throughout. Faith is such a big part of this book, and I loved every moment reading.

"My heart might be broken and bleeding, but what was left of it was his. It had always been his, even if I had forgotten."

I loved every minute of this clever no-spice Christian romantic fantasy take on Aladdin.

This book is not for the faint of heart. I read it in one sitting because I could not put it down. Full of pulse-pounding action, heartbreak, suspense, romance, sacrifice, and healing. I cannot recommend this book enough!

This is book 2 in the Genie duology and they must be read in order.

I enjoyed Book 1, Genie. But wow! I was barely into reading Master and it had me hooked. My jaw was dropping at the things happening in the book, so I fit reading into my two days as much as I could before I stayed up late last night/this morning binging the rest.

I loved the Voice. And the end was perfect.

Be sure to read Genie before you read Master.

It was ok. I kind of felt that the storyline was complete chaos and it messed with the flow. I had to roll my eyes a few times but overall it was a good ending to the story.

An amazing conclusion to the cliffhanger ending of Genie. I absolutely loved the authors debut book of Genie, and Master did not disappoint as its sequel.
It’s hard to tell specifics without giving away spoilers to the first book, but I can say that the fast pace, suspense, and yearning aspects are well done again in Master. The way the author weaves the faith aspect in so well to a modern day Aladdin type story is just beautiful. It could have ended up awkward or forced, but instead it’s beautiful and inspiring. This is one of those books that has lingered with me for weeks since finishing it and I want to continue everyone I know to read both books! I highly recommend giving these books a chance, you won’t regret it!
(I received an early copy of this book, and my opinions and review are entirely my own.

This second book does a fantastic job of drawing the reader in with the immediate mystery. Due to it being book two I won't give away too much but you get reintroduced to familiar characters and where the cliff hanger ended from book one you jump in again. But it goes quick with plenty of intrigue of what's going to happen. My jaw certainly dropped a few times as I went and my heart ached with the characters as they faced situations that leave you on edge. The author certainly does a wonderful job continuing this series with Master and if you read Genie, absolutely grab this one too!!

Oh my word! Genie was such a great book, that I didn't think that this one could be equal or better and I was wrong! This story kept me hooked from the first page and I literally read it in one sitting. The characters, the plot twist and the ending - all perfection! Definitely one I am going to read over and over. Overall, I wish I could give it more then 5 stars! (like at least 10!)

Please note that this shouldn't be read as a standalone because it is the continuation of the first book, Genie.

I was given this book by the author - all thoughts are my own.

Oh mannnnnn these books!
Two months since I read Master (book 2 of the series) and there are still some parts sneaking up on me when I think I'm over it (and ive read some killer books this year!)

Master is does an amazing job of balancing light and dark, heavy and easy.
Scripture and faith are so seamlessly worked through this. The duology is fast paced, the characters are deep and complex, and the nods to the fairy tale are the cherry on top.

This was actually my first go at Beta reading <3
Uhg I need another reread.

I absolutely loved the first book of this duology, Genie. Which you really need to read first in order to understand Master. Master continues the story of Addin And Jasmine and picks up where Genie left off. It's full of action, slow burn romance encompasses in faith elements. It's fast, it's fun and takes you for a wild ride!

This heart-wrenching sequel to Genie is just... 👌 I'd give it 4 and 1/2 stars if I could because I liked Genie better but this ending to the duology is still incredible. Thankful to have received an ARC copy.

📖Master by Elizabeth Joy

I really enjoyed this conclusion to the Genie Duology! If you haven’t read book one, Genie, the second book will be impossible to understand so if you’re reading this and haven’t read Genie, I want to stop you right there 🤭

Our main character awakes to find a new reality stretched out before them where they have a master to answer to and their wishes to grant. (Per the authors request, I don’t want to give much away because reading it and being surprised really is the crème de la crème of this series!)

It is full of twists and turns with serious “you have to read it to believe it” vibes! 👀

if you love no spice fairytale retellings with depth, Christian themes, and redemption arcs, this duology is definitely one to check out!

I read the arc but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Tropes:
-Aladdin retelling in modern times
-genie
-redemption arc
-Enemies to more
-forced proximity
-slow burn
-Forced proximity
-twists and turns
-mystery
-Christian themes
