Vargas seems a man from another time and his offer sounds too good to be true. While Tom and his new companions have only recently escaped the terror of Portsmouth, they have another difficult decision to make. They can either accept Vargas at his word and see where he takes them, or find somewhere to wait out the long, cold winter with no provisions or preparations.
Their situation becomes even more uneasy when things take a bizarre turn. On the road to Respite, they learn much has changed since Ben and the others left it.
