Zyan Star #0.5

Black Magic & Mojitos

Rate this book
Zyan Star’s latest job is turning into a real Nightmare.

When supernatural bounty hunter Zyan Star jets down to Rio to meet a prospective client, everything goes as planned initially. That is, until she finds out the person hiring her is Raoul Cabrera, the half demon/half faery supernatural overlord of Brazil, who rubs elbows with Lucifer himself. And that he’s hired another bounty hunter, Donovan McGregor, to work with her.

Their target is a herd of Nightmares, horse spirits that torment people with visions of their worst fears before devouring their flesh. Zy and Donovan head out on the hunt, but it quickly becomes apparent that their client hasn’t given them all the facts. There’s a pissed-off, powerful witch summoning the Nightmares, and she’s out to exact some serious revenge on Raoul. Zy soon realizes she’s caught in the middle of a lover’s spat between two immensely powerful supernaturals, and it’s not clear whose side she should stand on. As if that weren’t enough, pulling off this job is going to require her to relive her worst fears and summon her own long-suppressed magical powers.

Let the supernatural Carnival begin.

Well, that was an unexpected pleasure, like ordering a margarita and being surprised when it tastes a whole lot better than you expected. It's like going to a neighborhood bakery and finding a fancy pastry of the highest order next to the run of the mill donuts.

With so many writers and writer-wannabes out there, I'm always skeptical reading an unknown (to me) author and will look for any excuse to stop reading. It starts with the lack of any attempt at editing or the typical signs of an untrained writer. At typos, verb tense problems, incorrect dialog tags and spirals down from there.

A.A. Chamberlynn's writing is, I dare say without jinxing it, almost flawless. Lots of showing, less telling; well-composed dialog, great pacing and (appropriate to the size of this work) excellent story arc. I quickly transitioned from looking for flaws to just enjoying the story. Yeah, the author's magic worked on me like it does in the book.

My only fear is that too many high star reviews may make some people say "Oh, yeah, that's not realistic". You might ding the author on having too short a teaser. Maybe the gritty main character with a secret flaw sounds formulaic. You might complain that the plot accelerated too rapidly, with not enough time to develop the third dimension of the main characters. You might grouse that the story world isn't developed enough and that all of the rules of magic aren't fully explained, but only hinted at. You'd be almost right.

Well, all that only made me thirsty and what do you do when your thirsty? Drink a tall one. I'm looking forward to the first full length novel and plan on sipping that tall one with great pleasure.

hot DAMN this was unexpected. when is originally opened this, my first thought was: "it's only 40 pages, how much could happen??" (the answer is a lot)

this short story was so surprising, the snarkiness of the main character, the quiet lil info drops that let you feel like you understood this world without being obnoxious or overly-long. (donovan)

it made me sad that it all ended so quickly because I could have quite happily kept reading a full length novel about these characters. it wasnt perfect, but most of the time the problems I had with it weren't big enough to make me dislike the story

definitely want to pick up the next one (the first proper novel in the series??) but I'm slightly nervous about it being set so far in the future because what if there are no character overlaps except for the protagonist?? (what I'm really worried about here is there being no donovan)

Fans of Mercy Thompson, Harry Dresden, and Anita Blake: meet Zyan Star.

She’s a clever and acerbic, Seattle-based by way of Ireland, supernatural (immortal?), eternally damned, katana-wielding bounty hunter, and for this story, she’s in Rio hunting some Nightmares. Not bad dreams, but the bitey, human-eating, give-you-nightmares kind. She is hired by a local supernatural big-wig to get rid of the evil things. However, as there should be in any good story, there’s a lot more to the situation than meets the eye. Let’s just say this: drama drama drama.

The novelette is fast and furious and full of one-liners that often lead to open questions rather than answers. Zyan notes, for example, that a flowering vine sags over the balcony, one that “smelled of vanilla and childhood. Well, someone else’s childhood.”

Zyan is a fighter imbued with supernatural abilities. We don’t see a lot of those abilities here for various reasons, but what we do see is that, generally, she isn’t somebody you want to get angry.

For example: “'It makes him look weak to get his ass kicked by a woman?' I rolled my eyes. 'Don’t make me cut off another limb.'”

The novelette is a vignette into Zyan’s career. We get some quick hits in, meeting her friends/business partners right away: Riley the werewolf and Quinn the witch. All three of these characters are cool, fashionable, and able to handle their business. We don’t find out what Zyan’s supernatural aspects really are. Chamberlynn does a good job of leaving that teaser for future books. We know it is Irish in nature, and a few other hints, but the reveal is left for future installments.

We also meet Donovan McGregor, rival supernatural bounty hunter, shape-shifter, and eye-candy for Zyan and her team. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him. There are some romance elements in this book, though mostly via flirtation, and this is secondary to the action, plot, and characterization–just how I like it. I would be unsurprised to see a continuation and probably further development of these elements.

The book is full of action, and if Chamberlynn keeps up the frenetic pace, the series will be a blast.

This novellette is a quick introduction to Chamberlynn’s Zyan Star series. Black Magic and Mojitos will eventually be followed by the series’ first full length novel, Martinis with the Devil. Being only a taste, I can’t tell where the series will go. I do know that it is a better first installment than the first books in several similar series.

*I obtained this book from a blog tour group with the hope that I would review the book: there were no strings attached, and I assigned rating as I saw fit.

Everything is right about this excellent novella, especially (for me) it’s resemblance to Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I miss that show so much!). The action takes place in Brazil during Carnival, and there are plenty of details to make the setting realistic. Zyan, the main character has a team that includes a shifter and a witch who help her rid the world of dangerous creatures. It’s the adept combination of danger and funny snark that reminds me of Buffy.

The book is extremely well-written, with great descriptions, lots of tension, and vivid characters. The main character is well-developed and her casually funny asides will keep you smiling—when you’re not whizzing through pages of exciting action, rushing to find out what happens next. There’s plenty of action along with some blood and gore. Everything in this book is spot on, and I think the rest of the series will be just as amazing. Very highly recommended!

(I received this book via a LibraryThing giveaway. It didn’t affect my review.)

Zyan Star's newest client isn't who she expected. As a supernatural bounty hunter, she's met some frightening beings, but Raoul Cabrera is near the top of the list. To add injury to insult, a second hunter has been hired to help her. Zyan must rid Rio of a herd of Nightmares, and if that isn't enough itself, she finds herself stuck in the middle of a lover's quarrel. A very deadly quarrel. She's not sure who to trust, but that might not be as important as surviving the night.

This is an awesome teaser for A.A. Chamberlynn's upcoming urban fantasy novel. I gobbled the story up from beginning to end. It's fast paced, dark, hilarious, and full of action. Zyan is a heroine that kicks butt. There's a big mystery to who she is and her history, and I'm eager to find out if we learn more soon. I love her friends who are just as fierce in their own ways, and the competing bounty hunter Donovan is hot!

I highly recommend this story. It's urban fantasy as it should be.

I received a free copy of this novelette for review. It features a magical warrior for hire who doesn't use her magic and her two colleagues. She is in Rio de Janeiro for a job, and finds that things aren't what she expected. Apparently she isn't concerned about being paid, as she decides to take a different approach to her situation. In general, the plot and action were fine and I didn't have strong enough questions to take me out of the story, except for one thing. She's in Brazil. Mojitos are not Brazilian, they are Cuban. If she wanted the local drink, it should have been a caipirinha.

I liked the voice of the heroine, and was intrigued by her mention of her past and her powers. I also liked her relationship with her two friends--witch and werewolf. The romantic interest is properly cocky, though we don't get to see much of his ability to prove himself. But then, this is a novelette, and it's something of a teaser to get readers interested in the series. And I definitely am.

Zyan Star is a bounty hunter for the supernatural meeting her client in Rio De Janeiro. Zyan only has a few rules:1. No lying 2. No threats against her friends and 3. Don't challenge her. If you follow these rules you'll get along fine with Zyan. Zyan learns that she's been lied to but another person is being added to the job. She's furious and vowing vengeance. Donovan McGregor is a well known European bounty hunter called in on the same job as Zyan. Donovan has no problem working with Zyan even though Zyan has other ideas about the matter. Can Zyan find out the real job from the client? Will Zyan accept the job? Your answers await you in Black Magic and Mojitos.

This new to me author has done a wonderful job of making a bounty hunter new and exciting again at least in my book. The characters and story showed flaws, honesty, rawness, intriguing, and lastly compelling. Definitely consider this author for future books to read.

Zyan Star may find Rio too hot to handle in A.A. Chamberlynn's Black Magic and Mojitos. From the very first page, I loved Zyan's voice and was yanked into the story. Zyan is definitely her own woman and is such a strong and spirited female lead with two great best friends/business partners that balance her out well. I enjoyed the verbal sparring between Zyan and the hunky bounty hunter Donovan McGregor. Chamberlynn writes a thrilling and adventure-packed supernatural story. The beautiful and colorful descriptions paint the setting so well I felt like I was in Rio. Black Magic and Mojitos by A.A. Chamberlynn is a refreshing magical sip of what I hope is just a start of a great new series featuring this supernatural bounty hunter.

Black Magic & Mojitos by A.A. Chamberlynn What a fun prequel novella by debut author A.A. Chamberlynn. There's just enough worldbuilding in this new Urban Fantasy series to whet the appetite. I want to know more about Zyan--who she is, WHAT she is, and how she ended up as basically a supernatural bounty hunter/tracker. Her cadre, a werewolf and a witch, give her support and the intriguing Donovan, a potential rival and more, will hopefully reappear in the first full-length novel. Fun book, fun characters, fun world, well written. I'll be watching for more books by this author.

Zyan is a supernatural bounty hunter, which is a fascinating idea. This novelette has a great voice, with some unique expressions and descriptions. Snappy and clever dialogue moved the pacing along nicely, as did the action.

If you don’t mind your prose peppered with serious swearing (along with an opening flippant comment about Jesus/a giant Jesus statue), and you like heroines who katana-swordfight against evil supernatural creatures, then you’ll find this an entertaining and exciting read.

When reading this I was completely drawn in. The story line was very good and the language everything was easily understood. I liked the banter between the characters. Their personalities draw you in. You can see yourself right there watching it all unfold. Cant wait to see what Happens with Zyan and Donovan, their little dance had me laughing a few times. Definitely a book to pick up and then wait on the next release.

Fun little appetizer story from debut novelist A.A. Chamberlynn. I love this introduction to Zyan, and I thoroughly enjoyed this new world of supernatural beings Ms. Chamberlynn has created. Plus, a neat and interesting locale - Rio! I can't wait to read the full-length story set 5 years later coming out in October. All I can say is, Donovan better make an appearance. ;o)

Zyan is a bounty hunter who has an assignment in Rio. All hell breaks loose when she’s there, literally. There are many supernatural beings around her, the worst being Nightmares who are frightening, bloodthirsty entities. This novella has a great voice, is action-packed, and there’s some steamy chemistry between Zyan and Donovan, a bounty hunter who works alongside her.

Too short to be read as a standalone; but a juicy teaser that will leave the reader considering Part 2.

Providing the next one is novel length.

Very interesting ...

Very interesting but even with quite packed into such a short space, this felt more like a sample then a story....
Like a sample from some restaurant in a mall of something, or a grocery store, while imaginative this was just enough to whet your appetite and maybe get you interested nothing more....
And that’s what bugs me, a true short story can and should feel both complete and leaving you wanting more...
Hungry yes,but satisfied as well....
Here I’m only hungry, like when your only offered a few warm cheese cubes with pretzel sticks shoved in them, a taste of something get you interested but to little to even be a snack...
I feel like I might have gotten a taste of who Zyan is and why I might want to read about her but honestly not much, and definitely not enough to make this worth reading again...
Seriously this story is too disposable easily forgotten,Zyan seems interesting and hopefully the kinda Kickass heroine I like but there just enough here...
I will try this series but at the moment I’m f a r from impressed....

Loved it. Great beginning fur the series

Thus was just action after action and it was a really fast read fur me. Set hire Zyan meet Quinn,Riley and Donovan was really cool. You see them fighting ask these skirmishes but this backstory was perfect and fit them all together perfectly

An interesting novella, a bit too short to really get to know the characters but that’s not really the point of a prequel novella. Felt slightly disjointed at times, but maybe it makes more sense in the next book.

This was a novella meant to serve as an introduction to the characters of a new series starting later this year, and it did a decent job of painting in the broad strokes, giving an idea of what's on offer.

The problem is, I truly disliked most of what was painted in.

It opens in Rio, with mockery of the statue of Jesus.

Really?

Really?

That intro to Zyan Star is … apparently pretty representative. She's yet another new addition to the Badass Foul-Mouthed Hard-Drinking Got No Time for Emotion Club; I wonder if they have artistically torn t-shirts. I found it interesting that by the end of the novella three of the four protagonists' "supe" characteristics were mapped out (magic user, werewolf, were-something-else) – but not Zyan's. She's immortal; she's strong and fast and all superpower-y; she eats people and she feels kind of guilty about it now and then; maybe … vampire? I suppose that's left for the book to explore. Don't know. Don't care.

It's a shame. Some of the writing is good – the metaphor used about the bad guy's eyes was nicely done. And as I said, characterization was good for so short a piece

I always find it incredibly sad when a writer gushes in a note about how utterly marvelous her editor was … and for the text that was supposedly so lovingly edited to be riddled with errors. ("Remind my manners") ("Someone who can be discrete" – for the record, that means "individually separate and distinct", which, who knows, maybe that's what they were looking for) (Oh, and *sigh* "a flare for drama". Really?)

Black Magic & Mojitos is a superbly written, action-packed, urban fantasy novella with a kick-ass supernatural bounty hunter. Zyan is sweating up a storm in Rio, and that’s even before she meets with her new client. Taking down supernatural creatures is her game, but things don’t quite go to plan once she finds out she’s not the only hunter on the gig. Tension explodes as Zyan and Donovan attempt to get along. Loved their conflict, not to mention the slight underlying hint at so much more between these two.
The nightmarish creatures they meet are not what I expected and I loved them. Despite their creepiness, Zyan never backed down, and who doesn’t adore a heroine like that? Well, I sure do. The tougher, the better in my books. When a new witch joins their forces, things are not necessarily what they seem… Not going to give it away, but let’s just say the ending worked perfectly for me. Didn’t see it coming, so well done to Chamberlynn.
A fantastic story from Chamberlynn, and I’ll be the first to grab myself a copy of her follow up book in the series, Martinis with the Devil. Even the title has me hooked. Bring it on.
Highly recommend Black Magic & Mojitos to anyone who enjoys a dark urban fantasy with a wicked-tongued-heroine who never backs down. Chamberlynn has created a rich world with monsters and characters unique to her story. Well done.

One kick-trash heroine and a mission gone bad. Zyan, supernatural bounty hunter for hire... Talk about a unique angle. I met the characters in a piece of flash fiction and immediately picked up the novella. It was a fun ride with more ego than a 16 year old boy.

Content Warning: Some language, violence, suggestive situations and drinking.

At 44 pages, it barely qualifies as a short story. Add the insult of paying 99 cents for it, and it just leaves you with an icky passed-off feeling.
