Vengeance drives him. Will honor save him?
A savage tribe of cru'gan brutally slaughtered his family, orphaning Ohlen when he was still a boy. Twenty years later a ferocious attack driven by a mysterious witch sends him on a perilous journey to rescue his best friend's child. His choice between vengeance and honor will determine not only his own fate, but the fate of those he loves.
Like many fantasy authors, I was introduced to the genre when I played my first game of Dungeons & Dragons. It was during a family camping trip in May, 1980, and as myself and two friends sat inside a travel trailer rolling dice and fighting orcs, the air outside became gritty and hard to breathe. It was permeated with the fine gray ash spewing out of Mt. St. Helens which was erupting just sixty miles to the north.
I live in western Oregon in the shadow of another active volcano, Mt. Hood.
I found this to be quite a good debut, that caught me with a number of interesting twists that I thought were well done. In full disclosure, this book first came across my radar when the author, who I've met on reddit asked me to take a look. I did review the first few pages.
My how far this book has come. The original opening I read has been vastly improved and I found the result to be concise, compelling, and engaging. I loved that the author infused humor and his bonds of friendship really came through in just a few masterfully written lines.
While not without flaws, I can honestly say I enjoyed my time spent in Mr. Williamson's world. I've provided him some detailed comments, and I hope he'll look at them as he did the opening.
All in all, the characters were well written and most of all they were people that I wanted to hang out with. I find too much of fantasy these days is filled with anti-heroes with no redeeming qualities, so it was a breath of fresh air to find myself alongside people I want to spend time with and will be looking forward to any future books the writer creates.
I am the author of Ohlen's Arrow and would like to thank Michael Sullivan for his review of an initial copy. As of September 1st, 2013, the book is now officially available for sale (as of the time of this comment, Amazon.com). A free sample (PDF) is available at http://bit.ly/1cyl1af I welcome reviews and comments.
