[Reread] Eckhart was outside his time, for sure. He was a non-fit. It got him into trouble with the Catholic establishment, as it did with Matthew Fox.
Fox does a good job of rendering Eckhart for us. One could take any one of these meditations and reflect on it for years. They have a koan quality.
Fox shows how Eckhart, while stressing the negation of knowledge, was not world-denying, but affirmative of the essence of person and nature. We know by not-knowing, Eckhart says.
Glad I came back after over 25 years to taste this wisdom again, and read it at a different season of my life. A good, brief introduction to Eckhart and his thought - better, his beyond-thought.
Eckhart, after my reading varied works on and by him, seems more Zen in thought than Church in thought - and he is a popular thinker among many Buddhists. And he is not for those who only want low-nutrient, comfort food. Enjoy the deliciousness, but know he will not chew for you!
