They say you feel cold when you die. The people I’ve killed would beg to differ.
For twenty-something Ransley, the adopted daughter of famed street fighter Estevan Benitez, fighting is all she knows. One hidden detail separates her from the endless string of her pathetic opponents: she can craft and influence heat and fire.
When she’s pitted against the strongest fighters at the infamous Argolla, Ransley faces something she never expected:
A man like her.
Roydon can duplicate himself. When the two collide in the ring, a chain of deals turns Roydon over to Public Four and he’s taken away to undergo the disturbing process of the Nexis. What it is, or what it does, no one outside of The Public knows.
Driven by guilt and a desire to release the only person she’s ever met who’s like her, Ransley isn’t about to leave him for dead—not when he might hold the answers to her missing past. Now she must trust a pair of strangers: a former military man out to collapse the system, and a woman whose premonitions could tear them all apart.
J. Kowallis graduated from Weber State University’s creative writing program, and lives in Utah with her Mini Schnauzer, Etta. She enjoys dreaming about, flying to, and writing about distant lands (real or unreal).
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but Encender wasn't as enjoyable to me due to the main character.
I get why Ransley is a stubborn person. She's very emotional and passionate about the things around her, which makes sense since she can control fire. But there were moments where she just drove me absolutely crazy.
My favorite part was when Reggie and Nate came back into the story. I also loved the twists involved, and I can't wait to see how this series ends!
I was provided a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Summary: This book takes place right after Afterimage but introduces new characters into this post apocalyptic world. Ransley and Estevan are in South America, fighting to make a living. Literally. Ransley has a gift that she doesn't know how she got it. The Public had to have a hand in it, they always do. Ransley meets a guy, Roydon who is similar to her. He has a gift. But then things go seriously wrong, Roy is kidnapped and it's up to Ransley to help. Will she make it in time?
Dislikes: Nothing really. I mean there is a cliffhanger so now I'm just dying for the next book haha.
Likes: Roy, oh Roy. I wouldn't mind having one or two of him at home. And I loved the family dynamics in this book. It really felt like I was watching friends and neighbors. The plot was so intricate and detailed. And the writing is so skillfully executed.
Overall: Please read this series if you like sci-fi, dystopian books. I loved every minute of this and now my empty heart must wait for the next installment.

WOW WOW WOW!!! OMG You know how you get nervous about the second installment of a book because you're worried that it cannot live up to the first book? That was me. I really liked the first book and I was a little worried. However, I thought this one was BETTER.
In this book, we meet new characters and we leave some behind. Reggie and Nate still make an appearance, but we meet Ransley and Royden (and some others, but these are the main characters). Ransley is kind of like a child-fighter, but she is older. She's been fighting for 15 years. She has an ability like Reggie (who can see into the future), but hers is controlling fire. Roydon is someone she meets in the ring one night while fighting and discovers that he also has an ability as well. We navigate Public Four in this novel and see this world and how it differs from Public One.
The landscape of the world is so intriguing that it was difficult to put down. It will suck you right in with the engaging storyline. The characters are so rich and diverse, I really felt their emotions. I had the same issue with this one that I did in the last one that even though they had differing ages, they all seemed to be the same age. And Nate acted semi-juvenile in this one. Putting that aside, I thought this story was so fresh and out of the box. It's something I haven't read yet.
Overall, I would give this one 5 stars. It was better written than the first, characters better developed, and the story was more engaging. AND I loved the first book, so that is really saying something about this book and the last one.
(Note: The book was sent to me by the Author in exchange for a review. All the opinions stated below are mine & 100% honest.) - I am in love with the world & characters J. Kowallis has created. The new characters that were introduced in this installment were absolutely mind-blowing and I instantly fell in love with them. Ransley is so kickass, and her powers are breath-taking. Roydon, uhh! How does J. Kowallis create such amazing male characters because I get head over heels for them. Nata & Reggie's relationship is complicated af and that upsets me so much, but it makes so love them even more. They are perfect!
The world building is superbly done. I totally recommend this to any dystopian reader! This is dystopian setting at its best.
*ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review* This is the sequel to Afterimage and I can't tell you how in love I am with this series and Kowalis's writing. I figured out that I hadn't learned my lesson from book one; I wasn't prepared for the dose of brutality this book brought into my life. The brutality was doubled but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't love every moment of it. There was so much suffering and this is a world I would never in a million years would like to be a part of. This story follows a different set of characters that are impossible to not fall in love with. Don't worry guys, we also get to see characters from Afterimage!! The supporting characters in this book were as amazing as the main characters and that's a hard thing to master. I bow down to Kowallis for making it seem to effortless. Our main character, Ransley, has the power to control fire, as you can see on from the beautiful cover. She was taken in and raised as a child by a former fighter, Estefan, and follows in his footsteps. There is where she meets Roydon... I have to point out that Roydon is my new obsession. He's a fighter in every definition of the word and his heart made mine melt. The things he had to go through were so unfair, it made me angry. It's making me angry just thinking about them now. His actions and words were always perfect. I admit to being jealous of Ransley a couple times. There are also some disgusting and horrible people in this world that I will not mention because they don't deserve it. I LOVED how there were Mexican characters in this story. I can't get over it. Kowallis made my heart sore to new heights with that detail. I always yearn to see my ethnicity in a story since not many authors I've read do so. It's books like these that make me so unbelievably proud of being bilingual. I don't know if the finished copy does, but I wish it had translations. I didn't need them but not everybody is bilingual so that would be a great help. The thing about this amazingly horrible world is that the more you find out, the more you want to know. Especially after that ending!!! UGH. Jesus, woman. Can you destroy us more!? Just kidding. Forget I asked that. I know you can. I can't tell you how many times I cried over these amazing characters. I absolutely despise everything they have to go through in order to reach freedom and ultimately, happiness. That ending is killing me and I NEED the next book in the series. I am driving myself crazy in all this denial!!
This series just keeps on getting better and better. I seriously cannot imagine and predict what will happen next in the third book but, what I do know is that it will definitely blow my mind and it might also break my heart into pieces.
I love the new addition of the characters - Ransley, Roydon and Estevan. I really find Ransley and Roydon' character intriguing! And their abilities are extremely awesome respectively. Estevan in my opinion is just a minor character in this story but his character really potrays a father who would do anything for Ransley in order to survive the harsh life of the post apocalyptic and also his deep love and compassion towards Ransley.
At first, I thought that this will be a whole different story with a whole different characters and background. But nope! The author, J. Kowallis adds them into the whole story (with Nate and Reggie) before telling the readers their backstory. And I have to say, that she really catches the readers whole attention with her phenomenonal storyline and vibrant characters, of course.
Did anyone not notice that Ransley's paternal parent is Martin Lobb?!? Seriously? If I were her, I would be disgusted and disappointed. Or the fact that Roydon and Reggie are siblings? Maybe they didn't have time to react because they were too distracted knocking the breath out of one another. Nice guys!
Still so happy that Nate is in the story but the two main guys - Nate and Roydon, in the story just confuses my mind because now, I can't decide who I'm rooting for!
What was that ending? I was so heartbroken when I read it!! Nate and Reggie, I feel the pain and despair but that doesn't mean that Nate has to go away alone. They should all go together. Nate get your shits together because what can you achieve by going alone?
This series is hands down, one of the best series out there! Everyone should seriously go and read it because it is definitely worth all your time and attention!
I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Insanity! Round of applause for this second book! I didn't think I could fall any more in love with this series or these characters, I was completely wrong. More excitement and adventure with new characters introduced. Stories intertwine with old characters and it was just spectacular. Everything I loved in the first book was all here but way more to love in the second book.
We are introduced to a kick-ass female named Ransley. She embodies a strong, confident woman. She is not afraid of anything and will do whatever she needs to do to survive. She knows exactly what she wants and goes after it with gusto. I wish I could be as brave and confident as her. Ransley just might be my new favorite female protagonist.
This book brings more power and special gifts to the story. It brought more interesting twists and turns. It blew the first book out of the water.
I am highly anticipating the third book more than any other book I have anticipated in years. I can't wait to see where the next story goes. It is all perfectly set up for another masterpiece. This author knows what she is doing. There are so many ways this story can grow and go on. Plenty more excitement to come and I don't want to wait! I really, really, really need the next book now! I am hooked and addicted to this story and characters.
If you loved the show Heroes, you are going to love this book!
Don't miss out on this series. It's too good to pass up.
I would like to start by saying that this book is LIT in every possible way. And the best thing - the second book syndrome is completely absent, you can just dive right in without any worries. We are introduced to a new set of characters and it will probably take like 10, 12 pages for you to fall in love with them. Those who are upset that this is not about Nate and Reggie, worry not, you will meet them too. Ransley, our main female protagonist, is a fighter and she also has the ability to control fire. Our main male protagonist, Roydon, can duplicate himself. Because of his powers, he's in immense danger. Now, it's the first time Ransley has found someone like her, and she'll do anything to save him.
I cannot even begin to tell you how cool, and loveable these characters are, and Nate who? I am all about Roydon *heart eyes* Encender is fast paced, exhilarating, dangerously delicious, and it is going to take your breath away with all its twisty twists. I am also very fond of the romance part, the author doesn't just dumps on you loads of melting cheese (well, I actually love cheese), but the lack of cheese feels so refreshing and makes me genuinely root for the characters.
I highly recommend this series to hard-core dystopia lovers. (And look at that cover, so pretty).
I voluntarily read and reviewed a free copy of this book provided by Xpresso Book Tours and the author. Thank you so very much for the reviewing opportunity!
I have no type of scale that could describe the magnitude of love I have for this series. Having read Afterimage, no doubt that I had developed a sense of what to expect from the author, but I should have learned my lesson not to ever underestimate the dystopian mastermind. J.Kowallis once again stunned me into a mental stupor and left me incapable of words for my review.
Book 2 started off with the introduction of new characters, mainly Ransley and Roydon, who like Reggie herself is part of a genetic experiment aimed to create the perfect human to save the race.
"In order to create an environment capable of cradling new thinking, one must first purify imperfection with a cleansing fire.".
As if the post-apocalyptic world couldn't be more brutal, both Ransley and Roydon survived the years by making an earning using the way they knew best - underground fighting. However, when each fight gets tougher and losing means death, it also gets harder for them to keep their powers a secret. Until one day when Ransley and Roy were forced to a face-off, things turned ugly for the two strangers when they learned the truth about each other. Now Roy was taken by the Public and it is up to Ransley to save him, with the help of a precognitive and a former military man we embarked on a journey once again inside the Public to learn more about the truth behind the Nexis.
I was rooting for Nate and Reggie's return since Afterimage and they are the reason why I can't wait to dive into the sequel, but I emerged from the book with another two characters that I can't wait to explore more. As always, the writing was impeccable and the world building was amazing, but it's the originality of the plot that drives me to continue with the series. Call me a nerd but I'm absolutely geeking over the technicalities of the Nexis system, especially when it's told through the POVs of one of the workers, Carmen. The attention to plot details were admirable!
On the romance aspect, just when I thought Nate and Reggie could finally have the happy ending they both desired, a heart-wrenching plot twist happened and I'm torn yet excited to jump into the third book! Did I also mention how cool I think of the supernatural powers are?
I liked that the author played around the taboo theme of genetic engineering and created a novel that touches on the humanity aspect of it, it's the best kind of science fiction.
I'll cut my review short because I am full of nerves to read the next one, there goes my sleep!
ENCENDER BY: J. KOWALLIS "My opponent's eyes are cold and detached. You have to be like that in this world. You can't care-or think about what you're doing. You can't think about the lives you take, because if you do...your will end in one snap of de Dios fingers."
I have been trying to come up with the words to say about this book, and what automatically keeps coming to mind is that this was not necessarily the book I wanted after reading Afterimage, but what it was, was just the book I didn't even know that I needed. I so bad wanted Encender to pick right up where Afterimage left off, with the characters that I fell in love with, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't initially a little bummed that what I had wanted was not what I had got. Instead Encender gave us these intruders. These brash, intense, barbarians literally fighting their way into this world...and eventually your heart. Ransley, Roydon, and even Estevan and Carmen were stark reminders of the harsh world they are a product of. So while they weren't exactly what I was expecting, or what I wanted, they were a perfect reminder of the savage world that Kowallis has created. I actually quite enjoyed getting to know them and see how they handled themselves while put in these crazy situations clashing against the Public. In fact, I once I started this story, I could barely put it down. I was flying through it, and before I even realized it, these new characters had wormed their way into my heart. Each one of them brought something new and interesting to the story, and ended up being perfect additions to this tale.
It was also riveting and also truly frightening to see what the Public was up to in this new territory. It became clear that we only got the tip of the iceburg in Afterimage, and I am DYING to see what is going to happen next. The abilities were amped up in this addition as well, which was so cool!! I really love where this story line is taking us. I can honestly say that The Enertia Trials are top notch dystopian novels. Each book thus far has been a surprising, exciting, engaging read from start to finish. Every bit I get only makes me crave the next even more. Congratulations, J. Kowallis, I'm officially addicted! I'll just be waiting here on the edge of my seat waiting to devour the next addition to this amazing series!
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The characters were great, the action believable, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the author's progression. This book is much better than the last and I cannot wait to read the next one to see where the plot takes me.
I was given a copy of this book through Xpresso Book Tours in return for an honest review. Book two of the Enertia trials hits the ground running with the introduction of three new characters, Ransley, Royden and Estevan. It takes place in Latin America near the city of Public Four, part of the new dystopian post war society created by a sociopath. Royden is captured by The Public and in attempting to rescue him, Ransley meets up with Nate and Reggie from Afterimage. I was really into this book and could not put it down. There is a lot more character development and we find out so much more about the Public and what its horrific leader is capable of. Will now be jumping into book three. Definitely read these books in order.
Reggie and Nate find Ransley and Roydon, both having their own special abilities. The Kindle version of this book had a lot of grammatical errors that were sometimes confusing to the storyline. The book ends with Reggie drugged and taken, Nate leaving an a revenge mission, and Ransley and Roydon staying behind to make things better in The Public 4.

The only reason this isn’t getting 5 stars is because of the main character. Ransley irritated me to no end, however, the emotional roller coaster she took us on added to the excitement of this book.

Encender, book two in the Enertia Trials series, is a fascinating sequel to Afterimage. I didn't read the synopsis for Encender until after I finished Afterimage, and once I did, I was curious to see where the sequel would go, especially since Nate and Reggie are not the main characters anymore.
Encender is about a young girl named Ransley who is found lying in the middle of the street by a retired street fighter named Estevan. He takes her in and raises her as his own daughter. He also teaches her how to fight. Ransley and Estevan live in severe poverty, avoiding the clutches of the Public. The only way to survive, at least for them, is to earn money through street fighting. Ransley is good, having been trained by the best of the best, but she knows that her next fight could also be her last. Except... Ransley's not like the other fighters. She has an ability. The ability to burn her opponents from the inside out.
Ransley knows she isn't supposed to use her ability, but if it means avoiding death, she will. Unhappy about this, Estevan takes Ransley to Los Angeles to fight in the big leagues. It's there that she's pitted against a fighter named Roydon. It's there, during that fight with Roydon, that everything goes wrong.
Encender is crazy. Like, really crazy. I found myself devouring this book as quickly as I could because I needed to know what was going to happen next. If you think Public One in Afterimage is bad, wait until you discover Public Four. The things they do there are pretty darn awful.
Plot-wise, Encender is another fast-paced adventure through this horrible dystopian world. You've got new characters to love, and to hate, and some familiar faces, both good and bad, from Afterimage show up, as well. And by the end, you'll be hanging off the edge, anxious to know exactly where these characters are going to end up. That ending is a bit of a tease, let me tell you.
Overall, if you love dystopian fiction, or books that will send you on a journey you won't want to end, then pick up a copy of Encender (and Afterimage, too) today! You won't regret it. Encender earns another 5 very well-deserved stars from me!
I feel that second books in a series usually don't live up to the first, but Encender changed my mind. It's not often that you actually love the second book more!
Encender picks up right where Afterimage left off, and once you start you won't be able to put it down. There are also new characters and settings added to the mix with lots of woven in details. This author writes such a brutal dystopian world and you can't look away. If you read this one, you have to read the next one because, well, cliffhanger.
Wow...just wow! This book was freaking amazing! I actually liked this one more than I liked the first one which is weird for me. How could I not like it when it had a character as sweet as Roydon. This one had more danger and violence in it, also more hand to hand combat especially in the beginning.
It takes place after the first installment. Afterimage. Except with a whole new slew of characters some of the previous characters meet up around halfway through the book. Normally I would have hated this book not being about Reggie and Nate but I quickly fell in love with Roydon and Ransley. (I love all the weird names too) Ransley was so tough and her cool power was by the coolest yet. She can boil people alive from the inside just be freaking touching them, tell me that's not the coolest thing ever. She can control heat with her hands which explains the cover. Roy can astral project which is also cool but it's not setting people on fire.
I really liked Roy and Ransley, they were too adorable. I was so glad they ended up not being related because that would have broken my heart into a million little pieces. Well more than it already was broken from that cliffhanger of an ending. Not sure how I'm supposed to just sit here and wait for the next book like this one didn't kill me. *Sigh*
I also liked Nate and Ransley being so snippy at each other. It reminded me of a brother and sister relationship because they drove each other insane. I laughed every time he called her harpy and every time she called him Rambo. They brought humor to a book that probably wouldn't have had any without them. This could have been a very dark book without that humorous edge to it.
The only things I can think of that I could say that I didn't like is the lack of Reggie's POV. I understand though because this was Ransley's book not Reggie's. Also all the spanish, I thought it was cool when I understood what was being said but my two years of high school spanish can only go so far.
**I received a copy of the ebook from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review**
The second book in the Enertia Trials beings with new characters, and trust me,I wasn’t too enthusiastic about reading new POVs,that’s the extent to which I loved the characters from the first book, and instantly started missing Reggie, given the fact that I completed the first book barely five minutes before picking up the second. So,I kind of left the second book just a couple of chapters in cause I was so certain that the second book was as amazing as the first ,but I first needed to get over the characters from the first book, and yeah,I like came back to this book after reading another book, and did manage to get all the feels from the first book!
Do I need to talk about the writing? If you did read my review for the first book, you’ll know that I love the author’s writing style, but if you didn’t ,I’ll just describe it in the same two words here.CRISP and ELOQUENT.
The second book too was as engaging and intriguing as the first, not like many series where the first book is amazing and then it goes downhill or gets dragged. This book goes at a steady pace…okay, more towards the fast pace, like whatever,it’s a pace that you’ll find super comfortable at.The world building goes on,the characters develop so much more, you get to see new sides of the old character and new characters as well.
There are two main new characters,Ransley and Roy,and they are one heck of a kick-ass pair together.I’m not revealing their powers, but believe me,they have freaking cool powers!Yeah,Reggie’s powers are cool too,but they are a bit scary at the same time…like the powers are not one I would like to have cause I’m pretty sure that sort of power would burden me,but yeah,Ransley and Roy have cool ones! I really suggest you read this series if you are a hardcore dystopia fan! For full review , https://liveinthepagesofbooks.wordpre...
J. Kowallis has a gift for telling a brutal dystopian story. I had the privilege of reading the first two books of The Enertia Trials, Afterimage and Encender. As soon as you start with Afterimage, you immediately become entwined with the entire plot line. You will immediately fall for the characters and find yourself imagining the story as if you are one of Kowallis's characters. Kowallis develops her characters in such a way that you feel as though they have become your best friends and part of your family. As a result, you will be turning the pages nonstop to find out what happens next. This continues through both novels and takes on some truly unique plot twists and story lines. The Enertia Trials is the series fans of The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner have been waiting for. These novels are full of heart wrenching moments and brutal action and adventure. Kowallis does not focus on the typical dystopian plot lines. Instead the reader is transported to a unique and devastating world and thrust into a fascinating dystopian and sic-fi future. There is something for every reader with The Enertia Trials. You have the brutal action sequences, the heartbreaking character deaths that would make George R.R. Martin proud, and a realistic love story (without the sappy buildup). The characters in the series are constantly developing and growing and the story lines make for a page turning and exciting read. You will not be disappointed with The Enertia Trials and I highly recommend these books to readers looking for new adventure and a well written novel. J. Kowallis is an author to watch and I am excited to see where this series goes. There are so many questions to be answered and I am sure more hearts to be broken!
I liked this as much as Afterimage. It was an enjoyable and gripping read. I love that Ransley is both similar AND incredibly different than Reggie. She's got her own personality and though her story is very similar to Reggie's in some ways, she's very much her own person. Roy as well... I kinda love him! Though... not the Public altered version of him... he sucked!
Again... the abilities are BADASS! Can you imagine combining all of their abilities into one person?! Scary and Badass at the same time! lol
I think the only thing that took me out of this book more than Afterimage was that relationships seemed rushed at times... but, I also UNDERSTAND it at the same time. Like, Reggie refers to Olivia as her best friend... but the two had only known each for a few days and so I got hung up on that. BUT, Reggie also lived a horribly abusive and restricting life... Olivia was the first person to show her kindness and friendship, so OF COURSE she'd latch on to a friendship. And Ransley and Roy... they knew each other a mere few hours and I could already see where that relationship was going. BUT, that was explained later on... so I do understand that as well.
Overall, both books were so enjoyable, so immersive, and I HIGHLY recommend to any lover of dystopian/scifi/new adult books! I CANNOT WAIT to read the next book... I was so freaking sad when I got to the final page and had no more to read.
After Reggie, Nate and the team take Public One in North America down, the story moves to Public Two in South America.
We meet two more people with abilities. Ransly can manipulate fire and Royden is able to split himself. Roy is a good looking, all-round-nice guy while Ransly is an opinionated undisciplined, selfish woman. They live and meet in a streetfight in the underbelly of South America, on the doorstep of Public Two.
Betrayal results in Roy being taken by The Public and Ransly running off half cocked to "save" him. At this point, she is found by Reggie and Nate and they join forces (against Ransly's will). What follows is again an exciting and action-packed read with both a satisfying conclusion and an epic cliffhanger.
Kudos to the author for an amazing series, she is someone to keep tabs on, and again I award 5 stars for a truly entertaining read.
In Encender we meet Ransley with a combustible problem of her own. Adopted by the top street fighter of the day, she is taught to use her wits and her fists. Forced to fight in the Argolla, what used to be the underground fights in Los Angeles, she meets the first person with powers like hers she has ever met - Roydon. Roy does play with fire, but his talents are impressive non the less.
As is with most crooked, money grubbing, what's in it for me arena managers, a deal was made with Lobb and Roy was turned over to Public Four. I found this book a little harder to visualize only because they are talking about what they are doing to the brain and neural pathways. Carmen could have made spaghetti for all I could follow and I wouldn't have known the difference. (insert laughter here)
Really though, I loved everything, up until the end. I guess it is the sign of a good author if they elicit emotion from you. Whether you hate the book, love it, are angry, disgusted, etc. Whatever strong emotion you feel means you will remember the author for good, bad or otherwise. I definitely will be remembering J. Kowallis for good and can't wait until Duality is released later this year!
Amazing Author! One you MUST add to your TBR especially if you love Dystopian reads
This is the second book in the series. The second book in series can go either way even though many times it falls flat. Encender was able to avoid that by focusing the book on two other characters. Nate and Reggie are still part of the story but the main focus is Ransley and Royden. A little trick other author use. Put the characters in the same type of setting, have the previous main characters as background character in the new one, and voila and second in series with a new story to tell.
Once again I liked the story and characters. I loved that the action continued in this book as well. In this story, we find that there are other Publics and how they differ from each other. The characters still read like they are younger than they are supposed to be but they are developed a bit more. In fact, most aspects of the story were worked on for the better.
I was sent a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I am loving this series more and more! I absolutely LOVED Encender. This book was so interesting, I didn't want to put it down! Ransley is really strong and her power is so cool! And Roydon, Oh Goodness <3
I loved loved loved how Estevan took up Ransley even though he didn't have proper food or shelter for himself. It was a beautiful father-daughter relation. The whole plot of this book has something intersting about it. The fights, the way Ransley met with Reggie and Nate, their adventures, all of them were so intriguing!
I am super excited to read Duality, the third and final book of the Enertia trials. I am positive this will become one of my favourite series <3

Encender was fast-paced and had the perfect amount of action and brutality! I love how badass all the characters were! I did have a couple of minor issues regarding Ransley’s character. I thought she was kind of annoying during certain parts of the book but Nate and Reggie’s presence totally made up for those moments. Overall I enjoyed the storyline and after being left with that crazy cliffhanger, I’m excited and nervous to find out what’s going to happen next in the third installment.
Met the author at a local convention and her description intrigued me enough to give this story a try. The plot is good, and I liked the character development.
Overall, I have 2 critiques: 1) There are still typos and grammar mistakes that need to be fixed, although this one was significantly better than Book 1. A really thorough copy editor would do wonders. 2) I would have preferred that the timeline of what I will call "the fall of civilization" be more ambiguous. Relating the story to current events makes it less plausible to me.
I did not read the first book in this series. However, I enjoyed this sequel very much. The fact that one character, a female, can cause and control fire was pretty cool. The book has interesting and complex characters in it.
