Join the most iconic character in comics as he embarks on an extraordinary adventure spanning historical and political events, and thrilling mysteries. Still selling over 100,000 copies every year in the UK and having been adapted for the silver screen by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson in 2011.
The Adventures of Tintin continue to charm more than 80 years after they first found their way into publication. Since then an estimated 230 million copies have been sold, proving that comic books have the same power to entertain children and adults in the 21st century as they did in the early 20th.
Hergé (Georges Remi) was born in Brussels in 1907. Over the course of 54 years he completed over 20 titles in The Adventures of Tintin series, which is now considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, comics series of all time.

Georges Prosper Remi (22 May 1907 – 3 March 1983), better known by the pen name Hergé, was a Belgian comics writer and artist. His best known and most substantial work is The Adventures of Tintin comic book series, which he wrote and illustrated from 1929 until his death in 1983, leaving the twenty-fourth Tintin adventure Tintin and Alph-Art unfinished. His work remains a strong influence on comics, particularly in Europe.
"Hergé" is the pseudonym of George Remí, making a game with the initials of his name inverted. Throughout the evolution of his star character, Tintin, we can see the progress of this author: from the first titles marked by the ultraconservative doctrine of the director of the newspaper Le Petit Vingtième, to the breaking of conventions embodied from The Blue Lotus , as well as the evolution of the society of his time. The research carried out by Hergé to historically contextualize his Adventures, as well as his implicit social criticism, have made Tintin a masterpiece of the 20th century.

The playground for many a day of fantasy for me as a child. All beginning with the little shark submarine that Tintin uses to survey the area surrounding a ship for treasure. I found myself wondering whether it wouldn’t be unbelievably uncomfortable to be confined to such a small space for seating and for your legs. I was also always anxious about Snowy and taking him down to the depths. But then again, this is a dog that is seemingly capable of the supernatural, so maybe I was being nitpicky.
We are introduced to a character that goes on to become a top 5 member of the cast almost immediately – Professor Cuthbert Calculus. He is deaf, but maintains that he is “a little hard of hearing”.
He was modelled after a real life scientist, a Professor Auguste Piccard.
Calculus it is who forcefully brings the shark submarine on board. Farr mentions that his name is equally playful in most translations, being Balduin Bienlein in the German edition and Tryphon Tournesol in the French. He also mentions that Hergé never once imagined that Professor Calculus would go on to be as pivotal as he became.
Outside of this addition, not a whole lot happens. I know that I find the volume serene, especially when I look at something like the below panel, which reminds me of Jules Verne’s writing.
Finally, a reminder for the crew that Haddock’s ancestor was also foul-mouthed, as his vocabulary stuck with these parrots across generations.
After a satisfying end to this treasure hunt, we are off to South America.
'Red Packham's Treasure' follows directly on from 'The Secret of the Unicorn'. Tintin and Captain Haddock found all the clues to where the treasure is, now they just have to get there and recover it.
Professor Calculus is introduced to the series here. He is a deaf old bugger who invents things. Pretty much sums it up. The humour is in what he thinks the person has said and his response. It really pisses Captain Haddock off.
Thompson and Thomson are along for the ride. They take leave from their jobs to lend a hand and end up doing all the manual labour on board the ship. They are well and truly earning their keep.
For entertainment purposes there's monkeys with a loaded gun, a population of parrots that has passed down Haddock swearing for generations and Tintin fighting a shark. Of course, it makes some sense, but like all Tintin's there's hints of stuff early on that are just not carried on and are weirdly out there. But that's part of the charm.
So definitely core Tintin. It couples well with the story before it and both would make the logical introductory Tintin's for a new reader.
This adventure is a continuation of that began in The Secret of the Unicorn . Firmly believing that Sir Francis Haddock managed to escape the fatal "Unicorn" with Red Rackam's treasure, Tintin and Captain Haddock make preparations for the treasure hunt. With so many mishaps, they finally piece the puzzle to discover the treasure in a most unthought way.
The adventure, in the form of the treasure hunt, was also quite interesting in itself, although I enjoyed the first part in the The Secret of the Unicorn more. We meet yet another beloved character of the series - Professor Calculus. The eccentric but intelligent little professor brings so much hilarity to the story. We are also introduced to the Marlinspike Hall, the mansion and family estate of Captain Haddock, where some of the future adventures are set.
The series is certainly getting better. When you are having trouble getting into the mood of reading try one of these interesting comics. You are sure to revive.
Tintin was one of the comic book heroes of my childhood. I'm going to read my way through the series again as I listen to a radio program about him, and his creator, Hergé. Red Rackham's Treasure begins right where The Secret of the Unicorn ends. Tintin, and Captain Haddock now have a treasure map, and intend to go look for what they can find.
In my opinion, the two books that make up this adventure, are the best in the whole series, or at least up until this point. Part of the reason is that there are no problems reading the story from page one in the first book until the last page of this book. It works as a single story, and it shows how far Hergé had got with his craft by that time.
But I think they also work because they are very different, and compliment one another. While The Secret of the Unicorn was a mystery set int Belgium, Red Rackham's Treasure is an adventure tale, where our two heroes go looking for a pirate treasure in southern seas. The plot moves briskly, but still logically, and there isn't as much silliness as in some of the volumes. There are perhaps more exciting storylines in some of the other volumes, but the whole thing still keeps moving at a good pace, and is interesting enough to keep one turning the pages.
The other part of the Tintin Formula is the humour, and there our cast is in excellent shape. Just as it was in The Secret of the Unicorn, the humour doesn't rest on one character, or a pair of them. Thomson and Thompson come along for the ride, and they are in quite a good comic form, but humour also rests on the all the main cast, Tintin, Captain Haddock, and Snowy all have their comic moments.
There is one more character who shoulders quite a bit of the humour burden, and that is Professor Calculous, the last of the usual cast of the Tintin books to appear. Even though there have been some dotty professors now and then up until this book, this is the first where Professor Calculous appears. Captain Haddock and Professor Calculous trying to talk to one another is absolutely wonderful. They make such a great comic duo on occasions.
There is one thing though. One thread isn't tied off at the end, and one could argue this is a flaw to the otherwise perfect two-book Tintin adventure, but there is a reason for this flaw. Hergé intended to use this at some point in the series. The idea was even to make this a recurring thread that might pop up now and then in the rest of the series, but then he never found the right angle for it in any of the books. So a flaw, but one that had its reasons.
I think I'm remembering this correctly when I say this was my favourite Tintin adventure when I first read the books, and I still think it is the best of the series, or at least up until this book. Lets see how the other half of the series turns out.

Tintin and Captian Haddock prepare to depart on the search for the hidden treasure of Red Rackham, and are approached by an eccentric hard of hearing inventor, Professor Calculus, who simply won't go away.
His shark submarine is to prove invaluable in Tintin and the Captain's search, and Calculus will be a constant figure in all subsequent Tintin books. They are also joined by the irrepresible Thomp(s)on twins. They take a ship to a remote tropical island and come across all sorts of interesting things like skeleton human remains of pirates, and parrots that have handed down from generation to generation, Haddock's vocabulary. After much adventure they return home, where the real treasure is waiting and where Captain Haddock inherits the mansion Marlinkspike, his ancestral home, which was previously owned by the criminal Bird brothers (See the Secret of the Unicorn). Another courful and action packed Tintin classic
Not: 12. macera, hala bir tane kadın karakter yok. Sayımımız devam edecek.
Red Rackham's Treasure is the second part of an adventure begun in The Secret of the Unicorn, rendered in highly realistic comic book/graphic novel style by the Belgian artist/writer Herge in the mid-1940s. This story of a hunt for lost pirate treasure takes Tintin, his dog Snowy, the ill-tempered Captain Haddock, and the comically inept detectives Thompson and Thomson on a long sea journey on a freighter, to a tropical island, and on an adventure under the sea. The story is sufficiently complex that it requires real attention to follow its twists and turns. This book also introduces the odd, hearing-challenged Professor Cuthbert Calculus, who is prominent in many other Tintin adventures. Along with episodes from the unrelated Tintin book The Crab With the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure are the basis of the Steven Spielberg-directed film The Adventures of Tintin.
Picking up from where The Secret of the Unicorn left off, Red Rackham's Treasure finds Tintin and Captain Haddock embarking on a sea voyage in search of lost treasure hidden centuries ago by the captain's seafaring ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock. Their alternately harrowing and hilarious adventure takes them to a tropical island, to the ocean floor, and back to England.
The vocabulary in this, and all Tintin adventures, is quite advanced and also very British in places -- it was translated from Herge's original French for an English audience, not an American one. There are realistically rendered depictions of life on a freighter, scenes on a tropical island and at the bottom of the ocean via pre-scuba deep-sea diving, with wildlife ranging from monkeys to sharks.Tintin and his friends are intensely loyal to each other. They use logic and intuition to solve clues about the location of the pirate treasure they seek.AS USUAL, OUR GARY STU,Tintin is unfailingly honest, polite, reasonable, and friendly -- but he will also defend himself and his friends any way he can.Tintin's troublemaking sidekick, Captain Haddock, loves rum and whiskey and drinks at every opportunity--which are fewer in Red Rackham's Treasure than in The Secret of the Unicorn. In both books, his alcohol consumption always leads to trouble of some kind, much to Tintin's chagrin, but it's usually played for laughs... "Circopithecuses!" "Freshwater swabs!" "Ectoplasms!" "Bashi-bazouks!" ;)
I'LL REPEAT THIS AGAIN:Its funny, coz my copy is around 20 to 25 years old, dating back to when my gran bought it for my ma, and i still LOVE it! Me and my ma have read the series, literally, infinite times! AND OMG, I LOVE SNOWY!
Red Rackham's Treasure feels like a continuation of an adventure with old friends. After the thrilling mystery of The Secret of the Unicorn, Tintin and Captain Haddock set off on a sea journey to uncover Red Rackham's sunken treasure. What makes it even more special is the introduction of Professor Calculus, a charming and eccentric character whose inventions add both humor and ingenuity to the story. The blend of mystery, exploration, and friendship makes this volume an absolute delight.
It is a joy to see the heartfelt friendship grow between Tintin and Haddock as they continue their search, blending excitement with a sense of history. Calculus brings his own spark of innocence and brilliance, which makes the team dynamic unforgettable.
Hergé's attention to the intricacies of ships, underwater landscapes, and marine gear is remarkable. The panels are filled with such accuracy that you can almost smell the salty air. He never reduces cultures or artifacts to decoration. He studies and respects them, so that each panel feels alive and authentic.
Having the whole Tintin collection is like owning a gallery of adventures. You can jump from a treasure hunt at sea to a political thriller in the mountains. Hergé's artwork is stunning. The way he draws the ocean, the intricate details inside the submarine, and the vibrant life on the island is breathtaking. You can tell he really loved drawing every single panel. Ultimately, Tintin is a lifelong companion. You can read these stories as a child and love the adventure, and then reread them as an adult and appreciate the artistry, the historical context, and the subtle humor.
Another wonderful book!! I don't know what to say, I may repeat what I said in my earlier reviews as I am out of words to describe how best are THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN!!
The film inspired me to read all the books, though I have seen cartoons, it always gives a good feeling if u read the books!
Many people, who read the comics first, said that the film has not done justice to the books, but I donot agree!!
Both book and the film are equally wonderful and being a fan of films, I take one step towards the film!!
This is by far the funniest adventure of this ever enlarging group composed now by Tintin and Milu, Captain Haddock, The brothers Dupond and Dupont, Nestor and M. Tournesol... the incredibly deaf and funny character, the typical "crazy scientist and inventor"! They set on a journey to find Rackham's treasure and they succeed, but through so many funny inuendos and changes to their plans that you will enjoy it totally!
I would suggest that this is the last of the war novels, though by the time that this was released the war was almost over (I believe Belgium had been at least partially liberated, and Hitler and the Japanese were on the back foot, though there was still a lot of war to fight at this stage). Most of the album takes place at sea (which is similar to the other war albums) and it noticeably has no antagonist - it is purely a treasure hunt. While the threat of the Bird Brothers still hangs in the background, they do not make an appearance.
This album also brings in the last of the major Tintin characters: Professor Cuthbert Calculus. He appears just after a group of would be treasure hunters (all claiming to be descendants of Red Rackham) appear at Tintin's door wanting a piece of the action. However, Calculus arrives a little later offering use of his submarine. Right from the beginning we discover that while Calculus claims to be 'a little hard of hearing' in reality he has selective hearing, namely he only hears what he wants to hear.
Up until this point most of the scientists that Tintin had encountered have been eccentric, however Calculus, becoming a major character, becomes the eccentric scientist and all of the scientists that appear afterwards tend to be much more level headed. Thus it appears that Herge's quest for an eccentric scientist has come to an end and his cast list is complete.
As mentioned, most of the war albums take place at sea, and this is no exception. Tintin sails off in search of the treasure, and all of the important characters (the Thompson Twins, Captain Haddock, and Calculus) accompany him. This in a way sets the scene for the later books, indicating the characters that will end up playing major roles in the stories. In a way it can be suggested that Red Rackham's Treasure marks the completion of the Tintin world, and now we move on to the other adventures. However, I feel that by this time many of the truly classic adventures lay behind us. However, I am making my way through my collection and will hopefully have a complete set shortly.
