The final volume of the Saga of the Demonspawn, bringing the tale of Fire*Wolf to a close. Fortunately, it does so with a bang instead of a whimper, though I'll admit that I'm sorry to reach the end of the tale.

Having defeated and expelled the Demonspawn at the close of book 3, Fire*Wolf now finds himself called upon to defeat the ancient sorcerers who had bound the fiends in the first place. This draws together a lot of the threads from the previous volumes, picking up what had appeared to be a few loose ends. All is revealed in this tale: what has happened to the vanishing dignitaries? who are the assassins with the strange matching scars? It becomes personal for Fire*Wolf when his new bride, Freya, is the latest kidnapping victim.

To uncover the roots of the evil, Fire*Wolf retreads a lot of old ground. He is once again both advised and used by the order of Gegum witches, he returns to the city of Belgardium, now rebuilt, and ultimately finds himself once again in the crypts beneath his father's old castle, where he learned his sorcery in book 1.

It's an action-packed and challenging tale, and a fitting finale to what has been one of the truly great series of gamebooks.
