Julius Zebra: Rumble with the Romans!, is the first book in a series about a Zebra called Julius. As daft as it may sound, I actually read book two, Bundle with the Britons! before reading this one (that one was a five star rating too). Whilst it was good to get to know the back story of the characters, I don’t feel that it actually lessened my enjoyment.

Talking of enjoyment, you may be wondering why a 30 something woman would be interested in reading these kids books. Well, I was brought up on slapstick humour, think Laurel and Hardy, The Carry on Films, and even the older, none PC cartoons. This series of books reminds me of them and captured my attention, giving me a giggle from beginning to end.

Gary Northfield has a talent for creating humorous, imaginative books. A gladiator fighting Zebra, who would of thought it! The characters are all completely wacky, with no social skills and they tend to just do the first things that come into their heads.

There are black and white illustrations throughout, most accompanied by speech bubbles, or diagrams, such as Julius pointing out the difference between a horse and a zebra. He hates being called a horse. There is also a lesson in Roman numerals at the back of the book, along with a glossary too.

This is a series of books that I can see both girls and boys really sinking their teeth into, and actually wanting to read. If you are after buying a book for a child, or teen for that matter, that you hope will grab them and have them eager to read, then I can 100% suggest this book, or even the series (there are three books currently published).

Julius is a zebra (not Debra, ZEBRA). Spoiled, kind a stupid and speaks-before-he-thinks but gets pretty pissed off when somebody mistakes him for a horse. 🦓🦓🦓😀🐴🐴🐴
Along with his friends, smart-a** know-it-all warthog Cornelius (who has a brother, who has a friend, who knows a parrot, who’s a great chum with an ostrich, whose mum spoke to a gnu, who definitely, no word of a lie, knew a monkey whose uncle Bob was a juggling monkey), vegetarian crocodile Lucia, grumpy lion Milus, rock-loving antelope Felix and giraffe Rufus, he is forced to train to be a gladiator in order to survive (and win) in the big birthday tournament, held in honor of the wacky emperor Hadrian.
I loved how they drove Septimus (headmaster of the gladiator school) mad 🤭🤭🤭

.... “Now!” boomed Septimus. “These poles represent your ENEMY!”
“What? We’re only fighting big sticks? That’s a relief,” said Julius. “I thought we would be up against actual gladiators. This is going to be a breeze!”
“No, you fool!” blasted Septimus. “These are PRETEND gladiators!”
“Pretend?” Julius was puzzled. “But they don’t even have any arms or legs! Call this a gladiator school? You don’t even know how to make a pretend gladiator!”
“I’ll have you know that practicing with a pole has helped train Rome’s glorious army and gladiators for centuries!” thundered Septimus. “We have conquered the ENTIRE known world thanks to the principle of pole training. If it’s good enough for ROME, then it should be good enough for YOU!”
Felix raised a hoof to speak. “How about if we paint faces on them? That might make it a bit easier to pretend they’re people.”
“Look, over here!” shouted Cornelius. “We could use this pot of paint they’re whitewashing the walls with!”
“NO! NO! THERE’LL BE NO FACES ON MY FIGHTING POLES!” Septimus wrested away the paint pot and brushes and threw them out of the arena..

Moreover, that is just one of the scenarios…😂

Dialogue and the illustrations are hilarious. Dead Bird Hat Man (being angry).TOP!
I was laughing out loud every time when Julius was brutally honest (talk about zebras who speak before they think).😃😃😃
I never imagined I’d be reading about zebra wearing a fake moustache.

Featured in many grandma reads sessions over the past few weeks.

Welcome to the world of Julius Zebra. He is a cranky teenage zebra heading for the waterhole with his mom and friends, just like all of us, when out the blue a lion comes and shouts for all to head for the hills due to an unknown threat. As it turns out the threat is a Roman battalion collecting animals to provide entertainment at gladiator bouts. From there to a cliff-hanging end of the book, Julius and his friends do their best to please Emperor Hadrian and survive run-ins with the gladiators.

Set up in part graphic novel, comic book format, with narrative interspersed, my crew loved the drawings and word bubbles. Some took turn reading those, or being particular characters. It was a good story, but what I liked best was the Roman history, ancient culture high points, latin vocabulary and numbers (all page numbers are roman) and animal info from time to time.

There is a sequel which we, of course, will read.

4 stars for all the Roman goodies. Huzzah!

I read this one in Dutch, but my review will be English.

FINALLY, finally I had a chance to read this book. It was in Dutch, which is a bit eh, but I am still so so happy that I finally had the chance to read this one that I actually don't care. Now I can finally find out what happened to Julius, how he met his friends, how they got captured, how they turned in awesome gladiators. Squee!

So in this one we meet our, unlikely hero, Julius. A zebra with his own will. :P Really, any zebra would be happy (or relatively happy) to go to a pool of cool water. But not Julius. Oh no. It was not the best meeting I have to say, it is that I know that Julius will be a great character in the end, or I would probably have started not liking this zebra. Things go classically wrong and Julius, and also 2 others who will be his friends later on, Cornelius and Milus. Yes, I would say that Milus is their friend. Even if he would fervently deny it all, he is still caring about them, somewhere. :P

And thus they get dragged to Rome, to the gladiator tournaments. Where we meet the rest of the gang. I was happy to see them all together, and then see them try to fight for their lives. Though you can imagine how that looks given that, with the exception of Milus, none of them know what the hell to do. So it was equal parts hilarity and excitement. I was definitely impressed with Julius. I knew he was great, but this great? Plus I loved what he did for his new friends.

The training for gladiators was pretty fun to watch, if it wasn't for those annoying human gladiators who really need to get their heads out of their butts. Gee, he already said he was sorry and that the didn't mean it the way he meant it. And yes, he humiliated you, but come on, that is how it works in gladiator stuff. I did like that the animals were so dedicated to the cause. And that Plinie was helping them out afterwards with some more training. Oh, and I didn't even think Plinie was that annoying in this one. *cheers*

The two fights at the end were fun to see and oh so very exciting. I definitely had to resist to flip through the pages and just get to the ending. Though, since I already read the second book, I should have known it would all go well.

I just adored the expressions on the animals (and humans). They were so silly and over the top. Especially Julius had some fabulous expression ranging from demented to crazy to something that should pass as normal.

Plus points to the roman numerals at the bottom of the page. Something different from the normal page numbering.

And of course this book is also stuffed to the brim with illustrations. At times stand-alone just giving a better look at things, but mostly a continuation of the story. It makes the read even more engaging and fun (and also funnier).

The Dutch translation was really well done. Sometimes humour doesn't get translated well (like with Disc World for instance), but in this one the translator managed to translate and hold the humour. Good job!

All in all, I need book 4 now! I want more adventures of Julius and his friends.

Heerlijk grappig (voorlees)boek.

This review first appeared on The Book Zone (For Boys)

Apart from a small number of outstanding graphic novels (e.g. Bryan Talbot's Grandville, Blacksad by Guarnido and Canales) I don't do books featuring anthropomorphic animals. They just don't interest me - I'd rather be reading about humans with human characteristics than animals with human characteristics. This is the only reason why this first Julius Zebra book by Gary Northfield has sat unread on my TBR pile for some time, as I have really enjoyed some of his work in the Beano and The Phoenix comic. However, last week I finally got around to picking it up to read and I loved it.

Imagine Gladiator, Ben Hur or Spartacus, where the hero is replaced by a rather nervous, slightly daft and totally naive zebra, and you'll have a pretty good idea of what to expect from Rumble with the Romans. Add in a healthy dollop of toilet humour and a host of other equally bonkers animal characters and you have a book that will cause many a giggle and guffaw amongst the 7 pluses (and most likely their parents as well).

Julius Zebra (don't call him Debra! Or Barbara! And definitely DO NOT refer to him as a stripy horse!) is a fabulous main character, with just the right level of daftness. Having been separated from his family (he's a nervous sort, and tries to sneak home from the stinky crocodile-infested waterhole) he is captured and finds himself transported to Rome, in the company of an equally daft warthog and a grumpy lion. Hearing the word circus, he naively believes he is on his way to see some juggling monkeys, and even when he reaches Rome it takes some time for the light bulb to come on. By then it is too late, and he finds himself as arrow/spear fodder for the gladiators at the Colosseum. However, more by luck than judgement, he ends up fighting back (something an animal has never done) and he quickly becomes the people's champion. However, this is only the beginning of his woes.

Gary's illustrations are even funnier than the text that accompanies them, and they aren't just there as pretty pictures for show either - they are mostly used to continue and add to the story, in much the same way as a comic works. Natutally, being from the pen and brain of Gary Northfield they are invariably laugh-out-loud funny, and make this a perfect book for kids who love a mixture of crazy drawings and bonkers written prose (not quite as silly as Mr Gum or Stinkbomb & Ketchup-Face, but pretty damn close in places).

The book isn't just an in your face laugh-fest either. Northfield has worked on the Horrible Histories books and has obviously taken note of their success at delivering historical fact in an amusing way that appeals to kids, as in Rumble with the Romans he very cleverly weaves in all kind of historical elements about gladiators and Roman life in general, both in the writing and in his fantastic illustrations. He even includes a glossary at the end of the book, listing many of the historical terms that he has used within his story.

Julius Zebra isn’t happy about going to the lake with his mum and older brother. The water is gross and smelly. He tries to imagine the water as crystal-clear sparkling water from a mountain, but as soon as he tastes it, he knows better.
He decides he is going home on his own, despite the warnings of being alone from an annoying know-it-all warthog that sees him. Suddenly they are both caught up in a stampede. There is a stalking lion nearby. Julius and the warthog escape up a hill, only to fall into a deep dark pit – with the lion!
He’s wishing he never left his family’s side when they are all pulled out in nets by strange looking creatures called people. Not just any people – Roman Centurions.

This is a hilarious beginning to this series. Friendship, time-travel, humour and animals all mixed together make a great read for 7+ boys and girls.

Julius Zebra: Rumble with the Romans! is about a zebra named Julius who is captured and taken away from his family by the Romans and has to battle professional gladiators for his freedom. This was a great book! The characters were well thought out and it was a fun read. The one thing I didn't like about the book was the people in the story were ok with animals talking! This book made me feel happy because it was a funny book to read even though it was pretty long. Animal lovers would really enjoy this book, as long as they were ok with talking animals. I can't think of another book to compare this to, but it reminded me of a lot of Disney movies were animals were the main characters.

Fun, witty, and informative is how I would describe Northfield's Julius Zebra. If I was 10 years old again, I would have adored this novel. It reminds me of my days reading Dave Pickley's Captain Underpants series. I would completely recommend this for anyone, young or old.

This book is so hilarious and just so silly but with a brilliant story too! ‘Julius Zebra Rumble with the Romans’ is the first book in the Julius Zebra series with the second and third books being ‘Bundle with the Britons’ and ‘Entangled with the Egyptians’. This book is where the adventures of Julius begins. Having been forced to go to the lake with his mother and his brother Brutus, Julius wants nothing more than to leave the stinky place and go home. But when a stampede of animals runs from the lake Julius finds himself alone, with a very annoying warthog, and together they have to escape both a lion and the Romans who are after them.

I started reading this series from the second book and have really loved it but going back to this first book I was a little worried that I might not find it as funny as the later ones, as sometimes happens when you enter a series in the middle. However I shouldn’t have been worried, this book had me laughing from the first pages ad it’s fun to see how Julius, a zebra from Africa, ends up battling Roman gladiators.

The book is pure humour and a very daft/silly humour which I just love. It has a very British humour, even down to the characters saying things like ‘Cor!’ and it feels like some classic British comedies where there’s a lot of silliness and slapstick involved. The book also has a Horrible Histories feel to it seeing as Julius is a zebra in the times when the Romans were a powerful nation. As the story unfolds there are lots of illustrations to go along with the text. These pictures have to be read along side the text, they make up part of the story and something about this style of book is just so appealing and I really enjoy it.

The illustrations are hilarious and there’s just something I find instantly funny about Julius, his friends and those eyes! Every pictures is silly and I’ll admit I laughed aloud on more than one occasion from the pictures alone! The pictures are all black and white. The ending of the story is a satisfying one, in fact it is my favourite ending of any Julius Zebra book (so far) given what Julius does. The book has a proper conclusion but also an epilogue which leads nicely into the second book ‘Bundle with the Britons’.

One thing I really love about this book is the setting and the fact that it’s a bit of a historical lesson in Romans too. There is a glossary at the back of the book explaining some of the Roman terms and words that you read in the text as well as a fun lesson on how to count in roman Numerals and of course Cornelius is always explaining facts within the story.

I can’t recommend this book enough, and in fact the entire series. I have definitely become a fan of Julius Zebra and can’t wait for every adventure he goes on. It’s a wonderfully funny book which plenty of kids will love, but it’s also a bit educational too. I also think a fair few adults will enjoy this story too.

»»» A compra:

»»» A aventura:

Very funny, comic-style historical 'zebra and Romans' story

The humour here reminded me of the Asterix graphic novels at times, the books are also partly graphic with comic-style pages and pictures, lots of comic asides and speech bubbles.

This will be popular with students who like text broken up and easy-to-read chapters. In a story typical of many children's books, a main character doesn't quite fit in with his family and tries to get away by himself. Unfortunately though, Julius is a zebra living in Roman times, and is captured and sent to Rome to perform in the arena for Hadrian.

He picks up a small group of other animal friends along the way, of course, and manages to impress his way into a training program for gladiators.

While I have given this a top score, this is because it will have appeal to a KS2 readership, and is funny. I did think it could have been improved however. The first person might have worked better than a third person narrator, I expected to hear Julius talking to me directly.

An unusual choice, to put the funny animal into a historical setting, though this worked (but how do the animals all understand the Romans, and how can they talk and wield weapons...? Never mind).

Very quick to read, as there are so many illustrations and breaks away from the text. Will go down well with age 9-12.
