This may be my son's (9 years old) favorite book. He devoured this book. He was rattling off facts and showing me pictures nonstop since this book arrived. I cannot ever begin to find the right words to capture how completely AWESOME this book really is. I love how it is set up. Respectively, each 2 page spread is a list, with vibrant photos and facts, of 8 awesome things in each category. There are 50 picture packed top 8 lists that will rapture the attention and interest of children and adults alike. From 8 hair raising roller coasters, to 8 fantastic flyers, to 8 ultimate toilets, to 8 wicked weapons in history, to 8 ingenious inventions to so much more. This 111 page book is one that will be a hit for a long time in this house. With an extensive table of contents to an index that is also very detailed, you can either read straight though or look up and then look over the lists that interest you the most. This book is sheer perfection and my kids and I LOVE it so much I think we are going to start making our own lists of AWESOME 8's. I also love this book because it will aid in my summer work we do at home. There are so many things that the kids can write about from this book. Amazing, wonderful and fantastic...5 HUGE stars.
I love lists. I make them, I read them, it’s just a fun thing that people do. It gives you some cool insight into people, like when you read lists of their favorite books, foods, or things; it can make short work of a project, when you have a list of best books or coolest science fair projects. Bottom line, lists are helpful and fun. NatGeo Kids has taken that idea and run with it, giving us Awesome 8: 50 Picture-Packed Top 8 Lists!
This book is loaded with lists of the wildest things, from the most hair-raising roller coasters (that new Joker one at Six Flags Great Adventure may have to be in an updated version, tho’) to the the most bodacious buried treasures. Lists cover wild nature, history, food, and fun. Plan a trip to see some ridiculous roadside attractions (there really is a giant ball of string) and travel in the wackiest of ways, like on a monster school bus. Fun facts pop up throughout the book, as do extended features on some of the lists, like the spread discussing how icebergs flip, following Eight Awesome Things in Antarctica.
It’s a NatGeo book, so you know the pictures are stunning and the information covers different cultures and different parts of the world. There’s a full index in the back and a companion website, the Awesome 8 Hub, where you can find more Awesome 8 lists and log into NatGeo’s Kids portal, which offers resources for educators and homework help resources.
I’m a huge NatGeo Kids fan, with good reason: the kids embrace the books, which are fun, factual, and contain beautiful photographs of the world around us. Know a kid who loves cool stuff? Consider this book. Looking for a summer program to put together on the spot? Maybe a spot the camouflaged creature game – there’s an Awesome 8 list dedicated to Coolest Camouflage, to help you along.
My favorite thing is the section on Dracula’s Castle. But it’s not actually Dracula’s Castle. They just made the legend up. It’s really cool!

Awesome 8 is a book of lists. If you like castles, there’s a list for that. If you like festivals, there’s a list for that. There are lists for the weirdest and funniest things you can imagine like toilets, expensive desserts, and waterslides. The authors picked fun and interesting topics to create their top 8 lists as well as all sorts of interesting facts along the way.
One of the things I like about this book is because the range of topic is so large, you can pick and choose what you want to read about. If something doesn’t interest you, skip to the next list, which will keep you captivated. Another thing I like is that lists aren’t restricted to a geographic area. Locations, animals, people, and experiences come from all over the world. You get a fun snapshot of other cultures and places, as well as your own.
This is a total boredom-buster book. So if you’re going on a trip or just need something to occupy your kids, let them get absorbed in discovering eight amazing trains, crazy foods, or epic playgrounds.

We all know that eight can be great. National Geographic Kids has accumulated a wonderful display of fantastic photography and interesting fun facts featuring only 8 per category.
There are 8 featured Fearless Foods. Would you be interested in eating a Korean dish which consists of live octopus? How about a Mexican dish which consists of ant larvae that’s shaped like an egg but has a consistency of cottage cheese? Fried tarantulas seasoned with salt and sugar is a favorite snack in Cambodia.
Also featured are 8 amazing robots. One can play the violin and another can help patients in and out of bed. If you’re into the wet and wild, 8 stomach flipping waterslides are featured here too. The Tsunami Surge in Georgia is the world’s first zero gravity water slide.
Readers of the Awesome 8 will enjoy categories such as fossils, castles, tree houses and so much more. There is plenty of amazing information for families to savor and share. Each page is filled with vivid imagery and short burst of fun facts. The back of the book is host to links so readers can keep the fun going. This guide is a must see and must have for any school or home library.
Today I am looking at one of my favs- National Geographic Kids. They have a new release for youngsters out called Awesome 8. My 10 year old spent two hours looking at this book instead of being bored at his brother's high school graduation. Score!
Awesome 8 is actually a colorful picture filled book about the weirdest and coolest stuff in the world. It is designed so that each topic has only eight things listed, so a child is not overwhelmed. You do not have to read it in any order, so a child can turn to the things they think are cool and delve in. There are so many different topics, things kids might never think of, and all shown in full color and detail.
There are fifty top 8 lists for kids to choose from, including Eight Remarkable Ruins, Eight Funky Treehouses, Eight Deadly Dinos and Eight Robots That Rock. They will not get bored. Non fiction at its best. They'll be visually stimulated and their brains will love the facts that are given. Plus, you'll find full page coverage of some items, like Meet a Volcanologist for Extreme Occupations or learning about Death Valley in the Eight Wackiest Weather Events.
Sometimes it is just fun to look at and learn about things a bit off-the-wall or just simply cool-to-know things. Sometimes it is fun to just see these awesome things - well, at least to see pictures of them, and be amazed that such is part of our world or such is part of the amazing inventions of people.
Complete with a great Table of Contents and an awesome Index, this will prove to be a grand source for delving into bits of research when the mind wants to take a journey to see some "awesomeness." Each two page spread is replete with 8 awesome things, places, critters, etc. and they are all shown in awesome photographs and enough text to tantalize the mind and senses.
This is a strong, well-bound, soft-cover book that will see lots of use and really help keep the kids and Mom and Pop out of the summer slump. Might even be helpful in making a "bucket list" of some awesome stuff and places to see.
I received a complimentary copy from the publicist on behalf of National Geographic to facilitate this review. Opinions are my own. I was not compensated for the review.
That's right...there are 50 different categories with the top 8 in each one! Not mentioned in the Synopsis above but some of my favorite are: Dream Homes, Clearly Cool Creatures, Awesome things in Antarctica, Funky Tree Houses! Each Colorfully, illustrated page is full of weird, wondrous, amazing, "mind-boggling", and amusing "Top 8s". The amount of searching, research, time and creativity that went into creating this large paperback publication, is impressive! Young and old will equally enjoy this outstanding compilation. Some pictures captions simply states where the object is located and offers "tid-bits" of information concerning each one.The book ends with an Index and a fun couple of trivia pages. The Book Cover and The Title are totally eye-catching and truly draws the "browser" in! The book is of the highest quality of paperback, National Geographic has built its reputation on for years. This is definitely another Five Star publication. *This book was sent to me in exchange for an honest review, of which I have given.
I think this may be one of my favorite National Geographic books I’ve read yet. You know we love lists here at Unleashing Readers (Top Ten Tuesday, anyone?!), so this book already was set up in a favorite way. This large-sized book packs so much information into its pages. Each 2 page spread includes an top 8 list with crazy, interesting topics and beautiful photographs. Each Awesome 8 is just a normal list, each item includes fascinating information that ties it to the topic.
