Der Yark
Ein richtig modernes Märchen Der Yark ist ein schreckliches Ungeheuer, das gerne kleine Kinder frisst. Aber nur die artigen Kinder sind für das Monster genießbar; die frechen und bösen bekommen ihm gar nicht. Und da liegt das Problem: Auf der Welt gibt es immer weniger artige Kinder … Früher reichte es aus, sich einfach als Großmutter zu verkleiden, wenn man ein Kind fressen wollte. Aber heute muss der Yark sich etwas einfallen lassen, wenn er nicht vor Hunger sterben will. Die Suche nach essbaren Kindern wird immer schwieriger. Die Musterknaben, die auf seinem Wunschzettel stehen, sind zu schlau. Sie stellen ihm Fallen und machen sich über ihn lustig. Endlich lernt er ein ganz besonderes Mädchen kennen. Es heißt Madeleine und ist die erste Person, die ihn nicht nach seinem grässlichen Aussehen beurteilt. Der Yark steht vor einem Dilemma. Er hängt an Madeleine und kann sich nicht vorstellen, ihr ein Leid anzutun. Er flieht, um sie vor ihm selbst zu retten. Aber von nun an findet er, dass jedes Kind, das er essen will, Madeleine ähnlich sieht ... Beinahe entwickelt man Mitgefühl mit dem Yark, und weiß gar nicht mehr so recht, wer gut und wer böse ist. Darüber wird man wohl noch ein bisschen nachdenken müssen.

Not for the squeamish. The Yark is a lyrically crafted, gruesome work of horror centered on a creature that loves eating children (preferably well-behaved children, as the bad ones tend to give him indigestion). Fantastic illustrations, a quirky sense of humor, and a sweet twist. This book offers the same dual-appeal as The Nightmare Before Christmas in that it would make a fun read-aloud in October or December. An optimal choice for little ones who aren't afraid of monster or creatures lurking in the shadows.
The Yark loves children.
He loves the crackle of their little bones between his teeth, and to suck on their soft eyes, which melt like chocolate truffles.
He adores their tiny fingers, their tiny feet, their tiny tongues, which he chews with a sprig of mint for a sweet and deliciously sticky treat.

Αυτό είναι περισσότερο ένα παραμύθι για μεγάλους, παρά για μικρούς. Από τη στιγμή που το Γιαρκ είναι ένα τέρας που τρώει μικρά παιδιά -και μάλιστα τα φρόνιμα και τα καλά γιατί τα σκανδαλιάρικα του κάθονται στο στομάχι-, με τον συγγραφέα να δίνει κάποιες σπαρταριστές λεπτομέρειες σχετικά με τη δράση του τέρατος, τότε νομίζω ότι είναι ένα αρκετά μακάβριο βιβλιαράκι για να το διαβάσουν άγουροι αναγνώστες. Από την άλλη, πάλι, γιατί όχι; Για εισαγωγή στο είδος του τρόμου, μια χαρά μου φαίνεται! Πάντως, σαν μεγάλος που είμαι, το απόλαυσα για το μακάβριο χιούμορ του και τις απολαυστικές περιγραφές. Και, βέβαια, η εικονογράφηση που συνοδεύει το κείμενο είναι πραγματικά πολύ όμορφη και άξια αναφοράς. Οπότε, όσον αφορά τους ώριμους αναγνώστες, πρόκειται για ένα απολαυστικό τρομολαγνικό σφηνάκι, ό,τι πρέπει για να σκοτώσει κανείς την ώρα του. Οι μικρότεροι ας πλησιάσουν με δική τους ευθύνη (ή με ευθύνη των γονιών τους). 7.5/10

Τι ωραίο παιδικό ( not) βιβλίο είναι αυτό! Η αλήθεια είναι πως απευθύνεται σε παιδιά άνω των 12 και φυσικά τους ενηλίκους που έχουν διάθεση για ενα gothic, grotesque, σκοτεινό παραμύθι που θυμίζει αδερφούς Γκριμ στο πρωτότυπο όμως!
"...Το πιο διαδεδομένο είδος τέρατος στη Γη είναι ο Άνθρωπος. Υπάρχει όμως κι ένα άλλο, σπανιότερο, μα τρομερό τέρας. Το Γιαρκ.."
Το Γιαρκ τρώει παιδιά. Μόνο τα καλά όμως. Τα καλά παιδιά του προκαλούν στομαχικές διαταραχές.
" ..Το Γιαρκ θα προτιμούσε τα άτακτα παιδιά να τιμωρούσε, να 'χε δηλαδή τον τρόπο να καθαρίσει και τον τόπο. Η φύση, όμως, δεν έχει ηθική και δεν τη νοιάζει τι καλό και το κακό να ξεχωρίζει. Κι από τα παλιά τα χρόνια, οι καλοί τρώγονται πρώτοι.."
Είχα πολύ καιρό να διαβάσω ένα τόσο αστεία και σωστά δομημένο αλληγορικό παραμύθι που γίνεται διδακτικό ύπουλα, σου περνάει μηνύματα εκεί που διασκεδάζεις και τελικά το τελειώνεις και αναρωτιέσαι από που προήλθαν όλες αυτές οι σκέψεις.. Κάπου είχα διαβάσει ότι μια καλή ταινία σε κάνει να μιλάς για την ταινία. Μια πολύ καλή ταινία σε κάνει να μιλάς για την τέχνη και τη ζωή. Αυτό συμβαίνει κι εδώ.

Η Κατερινα Φραγκου στη μετάφραση έκανε μια δύσκολη δουλειά με ένα κείμενο λιγο ιδιαίτερο. Σε σημεία μάλιστα υπάρχει ομοιοκαταληξία- δεν ξέρω αν στο πρωτότυπο υπάρχει παντού ή εν μέρει όπως στο ελληνικό, ήταν όμως διασκεδαστική νότα. Η εικονογράφηση δε, Laurent Gapaillard , με γκραβούρες, δίνει άλλη αξία στο βιβλίο. Συγχαρητήρια στις @oxy_pbl που έφεραν το βιβλίο του Bertrand Santini στην Ελλάδα. Δηλώνω ενθουσιασμένη.

Κείμενο στο Smassing Culture
Ένας μπαμπούλας για «καλά» παιδιά
Το «Γιαρκ» σε μετάφραση της Κατερίνας Φράγκου από τις εκδόσεις Οξύ, αποτελεί έργο του Μπερτράν Σαντινί σε εικονογράφηση του Λοράν Γκαπαγιάρ. Η λυρικότητα που διακρίνει το βιβλίο, οι επιτυχημένες στιχομυθίες και ομοιοκαταληξίες που καθιστούν το έργο ένα ποιητικό πεζογράφημα, αναδεικνύονται μέσα από την εξαιρετική και προσεγμένη μετάφραση της Κατερίνας Φράγκου. Η αφήγηση του Σαντινί είναι απολαυστική, υπαινικτική και χιουμοριστική, χαρακτηριστικά που λειτουργούν με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε το βιβλίο να είναι ευχάριστο για τον κάθε αναγνώστη.
Το Γιαρκ είναι ένα τριχωτό τέρας που αγαπημένη του λιχουδιά είναι τα παιδάκια. Όχι όμως όλα τα παιδάκια, παρά μόνο τα καλά. Τα κακά του προκαλούν δυσανεξία. Τελικά, όπως συναντούμε και στην περίληψη του βιβλίου, «πού χάθηκαν τα καλά παιδιά;»
Το βιβλίο ξεκινάει από μία φράση του Τζον Λοκ το 1693,
«Κάτι που παρατηρώ στα παιδιά είναι ότι έχουν την τάση να κακομεταχειρίζονται όλα τα πλάσματα στα οποία ασκούν εξουσία».
Από τη φράση αυτή μας δίνεται μία πρόγευση για αυτό που πρόκειται να ακολουθήσει. Αναρωτιόμαστε γιατί τα παιδιά, συγκεκριμένα, έχουν αυτήν την τάση; Στην αρχή του κυρίως αφηγήματος ξεκαθαρίζει το τοπίο, αφού ο συγγραφέας παραδέχεται πως «Το πιο διαδεδομένο είδος τέρατος στη Γη είναι ο Άνθρωπος.» Μπορεί αυτή η φράση να φαντάζει, ειδικά στις μέρες μας, κλισέ, είναι ωστόσο μία σύνδεση με τη φράση του Τζον Λοκ αλλά και μια επισήμανση για να απαντήσουμε στην ερώτηση που προέκυψε από τη φράση αυτή. Γιατί «τα παιδιά έχουν την τάση να κακομεταχειρίζονται όλα τα πλάσματα στα οποία ασκούν εξουσία;» Είναι γνωστό πως τα παιδιά δεν έχουν διαμορφώσει ακόμα τα φίλτρα της ενηλικίωσης. Απορροφούν ασυνείδητα ιδέες και υιοθετούν πρότυπα και συμπεριφορές. Αν αυτά είναι αρνητικά, τότε τα παιδιά μπορούν να γίνουν ιδιαίτερα σκληρά. Μπορούμε να σκεφτούμε περιπτώσεις παιδιών που ασκούν bullying, γίνονται βίαια, φτάνουν ακόμα και σε σημείο να εγκληματίσουν. Το βιβλίο αυτό λοιπόν, δεν έχει σκοπό να κατηγορήσει τα «κακά» παιδιά αλλά να μας προβληματίσει σχετικά με το για ποιο λόγο δεν συναντούμε πλέον πολλά «καλά» παιδιά. Οι ενήλικες έρχονται λοιπόν, αντιμέτωποι με τον φόβο της ανατροφής ενός παιδιού ενώ τα παιδάκια με τον φόβο ενός καινούργιου τέρατος.
Αν και «Το Γιαρκ» αναφέρεται σε όλες τις ηλικίες, προσωπικά θεωρώ πως σαν ανάγνωσμα ταιριάζει περισσότερο σε έφηβους και σε ενήλικες γιατί το περιεχόμενό του είναι ιδιαίτερα αλληγορικό αλλά και αρκετά σκοτεινό, σε σημείο που να καταντά τρομακτικό (ιδιαίτερα για τις μικρότερες ηλικίες). Οι ιστορίες του γίνονται ακόμα τρομακτικότερες χάρη στην πανέμορφη ασπρόμαυρη εικονογράφηση του Λοράν Γκαπαγιάρ. Πρόκειται για ένα παραμύθι φανερά επηρεασμένο απ’ την κληρονομιά των αδερφών Γκριμ και ανατριχιαστικών παιδικών ιστοριών, όπως ο Χάνσελ και η Γκρέτελ. Το Γιαρκ είναι η ιστορία ενός εναλλακτικού μπαμπούλα, ο οποίος αντί να κυνηγάει τα «κακά» παιδιά, έχει ιδιαίτερη αδυναμία στα «καλά».
Όπως αναφέρθηκε παραπάνω, «Το Γιαρκ» είναι ένα τριχωτό φτερωτό τέρας, αρκετά πανούργο. Δεν είναι άτρωτο, έχει αδυναμίες, όπως σχεδόν πάντα όλα τα τέρατα. Πρώτη αδυναμία του είναι τα «κακά» παιδάκια. Το τέρας αυτό απολαμβάνει μόνο τα «καλά». Στην υπόθεση όμως δυσκολεύεται να βρει «καλά παιδάκια». Διασχίζει χώρες, ηπείρους ολόκληρες, δεν κάνει διακρίσεις. Το μόνο που τον ενδιαφέρει είναι να εντοπίσει αυτό που τόσο επιθυμεί. Τελικά όμως, αυτή η προσπάθεια αποδεικνύεται άκαρπη καθώς δεν βρίσκει αυτό που τόσο πολύ αναζητά.
Η ιστορία δεν στερείται αλληγοριών και κοινωνικών σχολίων. Ένα από αυτά βρίσκουμε σε ένα σημείο όπου ο αφηγητής μας αναφέρει πως το τέρας στην πραγματικότητα θα προτιμούσε να τρώει τα «κακά» παιδάκια, με κάποιον τρόπο να τα τιμωρούσε για τις κακές τους πράξεις, και τελικά καταλήγει στο σχόλιο πως:
« Η φύση, όμως, δεν έχει ηθική και δεν τη νοιάζει το καλό και το κακό να ξεχωρίζει.
Κι από τα παλιά τα χρόνια, οι καλοί τρώγονται πρώτοι.»
Ο αφηγητής κάνει και μια αναφορά στη σύγχρονη εποχή, μιλάει για τα «μοντέρνα παιδιά» και αναπολεί μέσω του τέρατος τις παλιότερες εποχές.
«Η εποχή μας δυστυχώς δεν καταστρέφει μόνο την παιδική ψυχή. Τρώγοντας κακή τροφή, το μοντέρνο το παιδί έχει χάσει κάθε αξία θρεπτική»
Και η εικονογράφηση συμπληρώνει χιουμοριστικά την «αντίληψη» για το σύγχρονο παιδί.
Το τέρας ταυτόχρονα, βρίσκει άλλες ιδέες προκειμένου να καταφέρει να εντοπίσει ένα «καλό» παιδί. Τελικά, μετά από όλες τις περιπέτειες που θα περάσει θα εγκλωβιστεί, κατά κάποιον τρόπο, συναισθηματικά. Όταν όλοι σε αντιμετωπίζουν σαν τέρας, είναι εύκολο να αποστασιοποιείσαι και να αποκρούεις τα συναισθήματά σου. Όταν όμως αντιμετωπίζεις μία νέα συμπεριφορά, μία πρωτόγνωρη κατάσταση, πώς συμπεριφέρεσαι; Αυτή η κατάσταση που θα διαμορφωθεί, θα αποτελέσει και τη δεύτερη αδυναμία του τέρατος. Πώς ένα αποξενωμένο τέρας θα αρχίσει να νιώθει; Θα αρχίσει να αγαπά; Ποιο ρό��ο θα παίξει η αγάπη γενικότερα;
Το αγαπημένο μου κεφάλαιο του βιβλίου αποτελεί το κεφάλαιο με τον τίτλο «Τα άγρια παιδιά». Θα παραθέσω την αρχή:
«Η γέννηση ενός παιδιού είναι πάντα πολύ σημαντικό γεγονός. Η άφιξη του στον φιλόξενο κόσμο των ανθρώπων γιορτάζεται πράγματι με κουφέτα, σαμπάνιες και για τους πιο τυχερούς με το άνοιγμα αποταμιευτικού λογαριασμού. (Υπαινικτικό σχόλιο)
Αλλά αυτή η χρυσή εποχή κρατάει ελάχιστα!
Με την πάροδο του χρόνου το παιδί δυστυχώς χάνει την αρχική του γοητεία. Το σώμα κι ο χαρακτήρας φθείρονται σε κάθε γενέθλια. Ο χρόνος το βαραίνει, το παραμορφώνει, το αποβλακώνει… Ποιος ευθύνεται γι’ αυτό; Μα το ενήλικο τέρας που μεγαλώνει μέσα του, σαν παρασιτικό φυτό που κατακλύζει τον κήπο.»
Ο αφηγητής καλεί το ενήλικο αναγνωστικό κοινό να αναλάβει τις ευθύνες του. Μία προσωπική εναλλακτική ερμηνεία είναι πως τελικά το Γιαρκ είναι το τέρας της ενηλικίωσης που τρέφεται με τη γνήσια αθώα παιδικότητα. Στο τέλος, η ιστορία κλείνει πολύ αισιόδοξα. Προσωπικά, μου υπενθυμίζει πως η αγάπη και η παιδικότητα είναι στοιχεία απαραίτητα για την επιβίωσή μας σε αυτόν τον ανυπόφορο, για πολλούς, κόσμο. Σίγουρα ένα βιβλίο που μπήκε στη λίστα των top 10.

Ο αφηγητής κάνει και μια αναφορά στη σύγχρονη εποχή, μιλάει για τα «μοντέρνα παιδιά» και αναπολεί μέσω του τέρατος τις παλιότερες εποχές.
«Η εποχή μας δυστυχώς δεν καταστρέφει μόνο την παιδική ψυχή. Τρώγοντας κακή τροφή, το μοντέρνο το παιδί έχει χάσει κάθε αξία θρεπτική»
Και η εικονογράφηση συμπληρώνει χιουμοριστικά την «αντίληψη» για το σύγχρονο παιδί.
Το τέρας ταυτόχρονα, βρίσκει άλλες ιδέες προκειμένου να καταφέρει να εντοπίσει ένα «καλό» παιδί. Τελικά, μετά από όλες τις περιπέτειες που θα περάσει θα εγκλωβιστεί, κατά κάποιον τρόπο, συναισθηματικά. Όταν όλοι σε αντιμετωπίζουν σαν τέρας, είναι εύκολο να αποστασιοποιείσαι και να αποκρούεις τα συναισθήματά σου. Όταν όμως αντιμετωπίζεις μία νέα συμπεριφορά, μία πρωτόγνωρη κατάσταση, πώς συμπεριφέρεσαι; Αυτή η κατάσταση που θα διαμορφωθεί, θα αποτελέσει και τη δεύτερη αδυναμία του τέρατος. Πώς ένα αποξενωμένο τέρας θα αρχίσει να νιώθει; Θα αρχίσει να αγαπά; Ποιο ρό��ο θα παίξει η αγάπη γενικότερα;
Το αγαπημένο μου κεφάλαιο του βιβλίου αποτελεί το κεφάλαιο με τον τίτλο «Τα άγρια παιδιά». Θα παραθέσω την αρχή:
«Η γέννηση ενός παιδιού είναι πάντα πολύ σημαντικό γεγονός. Η άφιξη του στον φιλόξενο κόσμο των ανθρώπων γιορτάζεται πράγματι με κουφέτα, σαμπάνιες και για τους πιο τυχερούς με το άνοιγμα αποταμιευτικού λογαριασμού. (Υπαινικτικό σχόλιο)
Αλλά αυτή η χρυσή εποχή κρατάει ελάχιστα!
Με την πάροδο του χρόνου το παιδί δυστυχώς χάνει την αρχική του γοητεία. Το σώμα κι ο χαρακτήρας φθείρονται σε κάθε γενέθλια. Ο χρόνος το βαραίνει, το παραμορφώνει, το αποβλακώνει… Ποιος ευθύνεται γι’ αυτό; Μα το ενήλικο τέρας που μεγαλώνει μέσα του, σαν παρασιτικό φυτό που κατακλύζει τον κήπο.»
Ο αφηγητής καλεί το ενήλικο αναγνωστικό κοινό να αναλάβει τις ευθύνες του. Μία προσωπική εναλλακτική ερμηνεία είναι πως τελικά το Γιαρκ είναι το τέρας της ενηλικίωσης που τρέφεται με τη γνήσια αθώα παιδικότητα. Στο τέλος, η ιστορία κλείνει πολύ αισιόδοξα. Προσωπικά, μου υπενθυμίζει πως η αγάπη και η παιδικότητα είναι στοιχεία απαραίτητα για την επιβίωσή μας σε αυτόν τον ανυπόφορο, για πολλούς, κόσμο. Σίγουρα ένα βιβλίο που μπήκε στη λίστα των top 10.

Σε έναν κόσμο με ζωηρά παιδιά, αν είσαι Άγιος Βασίλης (κάποτε συνάντησε ένα διαβολάκι και είχε άσχημα ξεμπερδέματα) ή Γιαρκ θα έχεις κάποιες δυσκολίες. Ένα κοριτσάκι σαν άλλος μικρός πρίγκηπας καταπολεμά το «Άρωμα». Το Γιαρκ όμως βρήκε τη δύναμη και τα είπε όλα σαν τον Πασχαλίδη.

Απόλαυσα τόσο πολύ αυτό το βιβλίο. Αμφιβάλλω πως είναι για παιδιά (εκτός αν έχουν κάποιο θέμα στο μυαλό τους) αλλά σε έφηβους και φυσικά ενήλικες θα προσφέρει γέλιο και στιγμές απόλαυσης. Η σχεδόν ποιητική γραφή με έκανε να το αγαπήσω.

Παιδικό παραμύθι; Μπορεί... Όσοι νιώθετε ακόμα παιδιά, διαβάστε το. Είναι εξαιρετικά έξυπνο, συγκινητικό, χιουμοριστικό και... αθώο! Απολαυστικότατο! Το μήνυμα που αφήνει στο τέλος είναι τόσο αισιόδοξο... Σε αφήνει μ' ένα χαμόγελο... Και στα χείλη και στην καρδιά!

Un conte moderne délicieusement effrayant. C'est l'histoire d'un ogre qui ne mange que les enfants sages, parce que les premières de la classe ont le goût de la tarte aux cerises par exemple. Même le père noël est mécontent, car il risque d'être au chômage par sa faute. C'est donc la fête pour les chenapans, simplement parce que tous les livres rapportent que le Yark souffre de gaz et d'indigestion s'il les croque. Jusqu'à ce qu'il rencontre la douce et délicieuse Madeleine... sa perception du bien et du mal va alors en prendre un coup dans l'aile !
Sur une base très classique, l'histoire prend des virages inattendus et patauge avec bonheur dans l'humour malicieux ... pour le plus grand plaisir du lecteur. Les illustrations de Gapaillard ne sont pas sans rappeler l'univers de Chris Riddell. Franchement j'ai beaucoup aimé. Même les réflexions sur les enfants d'aujourd'hui sont justes, affreuses et donc savoureuses !!!

Een griezelverhaal met een schattige boodschap! Een dun B-boek met illustraties en grappige, vieze, duistere humor. Vergis je niet in het feit dat het een dun boek is, dit is echt een B-boek qua taalgebruik. Desondanks ook een ideaal boek voor de nog-niet-zo-goede-lezer, juist vanwege het genre, dunheid en de tekst ondersteunende illustraties.
De eerste twee pagina's zijn perfect voor een boekpromotie of een teken-de-hoofdpersoon werkvorm.

The Yark is a creature that eats good little children because they are the best for his digestion. Until he meets a little girl that’s just too sweet to eat. The story is fun — although I’m not sure my niece (who is six) is ready to read it yet, since the beginning chapters (which talk about the monster eating children’s toes, fingers, hearts, etc.) might be a little too scary for her just yet. I don’t want to be one of those adults to assume something is too scary for kids when the kids think it’s fine, since it really depends on the kid. But I know my niece and although she likes creepy stuff (Coraline, The Corpse Bride, etc.), there are some things that cross that line into scaring her (The Witches). So, I’m going to hold off on this one for a little bit. However, some other six year old might totally love this book and not be bothered by it at all.

An absolute treat!
Brilliantly dark and wickedly funny. This is a wonderfully written book with beautifully evocative, sometimes sinister illustations. The story is told with intelligence, humour and real heart. Not for the fainthearted child, but perfect for a younger reader who enjoys the macabre. As well as containing elements of horror, this also touches on the themes of relative morality, and how kindness and love can influence the behaviour of others.
Entirely dependant on the child, but suitable from approx 7 years up (I loved it!).

Cette petite histoire est une merveille. La plume poétique de Bertrand Santini est sublime, les illustrations de Laurent Gapaillard sont magnifiques, et l’histoire est adorable. J’ai rencontré Santini au salon du livre de Montreuil 2017 et il m’a dédicacé ce livre en y écrivant « pour apprendre à être moins sage », mais je pense qu’au contraire, ce livre encourage les petits comme les grands à être plus galants !

The Yark is a monster who eats children, and not just any children. The Yark eats nice, sweet and very good children. This Yark is especially concentrated on very well-behaved children, since his stomach is extremely sensitive when it comes to even a dash of bad. Unfortunately, good children are becoming harder to find as time passes, and this Yark has grown very hungry through the decades. Finally, he has an idea—to steal Santa's nice and naught list. With an exact map to all nice children in the world, the approaching doom seems sealed. But things don't always run smoothly, especially for the Yark.
The book starts gritty with a monster who chews soft bones and sucks eyeballs. The Yark loves to gnaw on children, and this fact is not subtle or smooth in any way. More sensitive readers might find this a bit much, but it's a wonderful start to the tale. The Yark isn't nice and yet, he's somehow endearing. The walk along this fence-line is what captures the reader. As the Yark searches for nice children, it's almost easy to feel sorry for him. But only almost. The author keeps the reminder of the Yarks food requirements front and center the entire way through. And there are plenty of children who get devoured in these pages.
The story reads much like a traditional folklore. The sweet part and change doesn't happen until close to the end, and even then, it's a questionable change for the most part. It's this not bad/not good which leaves kids food for thought and makes the Yark hard to forget.
The illustrations are wonderful. The Yark, just like his food requirements, is monsterly yet has a dash of something sweet. There are enough pictures to add a lovely touch to the story and keep even reluctant readers engrossed in the pages.
This is definitely an intriguing read with a monster who will win the reader's heart yet still hold a place of carefullness. I can only recommend it.

Neparasta, bet ļoti jauka grāmata. Laikam jau dēļ samērā atklātā un detalizētā teksta par un ap apēšanu ir uzlikts 12+, bet ir lasītas krietni baisākas bērnu grāmatas (jo galu galā, apēšana patiesībā nav tas sliktākais, kas var notikt ar cilvēku). Gan man, gan 10 gadniekam ļoti patika, izrāvām vienā piegājienā. Tiesa nedaudz radās sajūta, ka autors ir no tiem, kam "zāle bija zaļāka" (tas ir bērni bija paklausīgāki), kaut kad tālajā pagātnē, bet raitais, asprātīgais un vienlaikus nedaudz smeldzīgais stāstījums to spēja kompensēt.

The Yark by Bertrand Santini is about a monster called, well, the Yark, who lives off eating children. He needs good little boys and girls though. Eating bullies and scoundrels gives the Yark a right terrible tummyache. But over the years, decades, and centuries, there are fewer and fewer good children to be found. What's a monster to do? Steal Santa’s list, that's what! Whatever could possibly go wrong?
List in hand, the Yark travels the world looking for delectable children to gobble. Unfortunately for him, potential victim one sees his presence as an excuse to be bad. Potential victim two turns out to not be so delicious after all, and gives the Yark flying axe handles. He ends up crashing into an abandoned lighthouse, where a young orphan has made her home. Through the love she shows him, the Yark learns about humanity, and in doing so, about himself.
Full of gorgeous pencil and ink sketches, this tale was a brilliant commentary on how children pick up patterns of behaviour from parents. More importantly, it shows how it is possible to change one’s own behaviour by changing one’s thinking, and thus overcome upbringing or base instinct. Geared towards middle-grade readers, this is an invaluable lesson. We do not have to be what nature (or nurture) made us. I read this with my cubs, and we all enjoyed it. It really reminded me Stephen Cosgrove's Serendipity stories, though longer and darker. Certainly, the lessons were consistent!

I have no idea who this book is aimed at. The descriptions of child eating are... quite detailed, moreso than most kids are gonna handle well. The moralizing at the end is also a bit much; it feels like anyone who is going to like the first part is unlikely to like the second.
I didn't like the second part very much, but the illustrations are SO GOOD, and the character of the Yark himself is SO GOOD, that I'm willing to forgive that moralizing. This is a lovely little book.

I began reading this book as a read aloud to my eight year old. I was planning to read it over the course of a week or two. 65 pages and about ten or so chapters made it the perfect length where I could get it done before *ahem* someone’s attention wanders and it doesn’t get finished. (Mine. It’s my attention.) Once I started reading I couldn’t stop. Engaging, highly interesting, entertaining, and eloquently written. The descriptions are mesmerizing.
I am convinced that the author has some experience with IBD because the descriptions of the accompanying depression, the despair of finding food that won’t hurt you, and the pain that can result was spot on. Also, the agony that leads to feeling death may be a better option—not desirable so much as a release from pain—yeah.
I read the entire 65 page tome in one sitting. I’m currently sucking on a cough drop and slurping hot tea to help my voice recover. No regrets.

I loved it. But I can't think of a single kid who would get into this level of devilishly dark fun. It's like Roald Dahl times 100. Take this excerpt from the first page, "The Yark loves children. He loves the crackle of their little bones between his teeth, and to suck on their soft eyes, which melt like chocolate truffles. He adores their tiny fingers, their tiny feet, their tiny tongues, which he chews with a sprig of mint for a sweet and deliciously sticky treat." Such fun writing! And it keeps it up - really great to read. But in addition to expounding on the delicious qualities of body parts, the book spends a lot of time talking about how bratty and terrible children are ... fun for me, not so fun if you are a kid. 25/30 #30booksummer

The illustrations are completely breathtaking, but that is as far as it goes for me.
Don't get me wrong, I do love some subversive children literature however, I can't see how this book would interest any child, only give it nightmares... I don't understand who could possibly be the audience that the author was trying to reach.
I bought this book to read to my goddaughter and I am so glad I decided to read it by myself first because she would have been completely terrified by it.
Also, was it only me that while reading, couldn't stop thinking about how weird the French are, especially when children are involved?

My favorite kind of story!! Right up their with Max und Moritz, Grimm's, Slovenly Peter, Series of Unfortunate Events, and other funny, subversive children's lit! I mean, kids will love this story and adults will be appalled! Too funny! And yes, I have a dark sense of humor! What could be funnier than a child eating monster?! I Really Like To Eat A Child by Syviane Donnio immediately sprang to mind! Wonderful picture book for littles (who will get the joke!).

A short, wonderfully weird story about a terrifying but also cute monster who only eats good children until one fateful day when he meets a kind, obedient little girl named Madeleine. She’s a dream child. She has a heart of gold. She even sorts the recycling without being asked.
This story is both familiar and surprising. Sort of like if The BFG had gone down a completely different road: a very dark, very funny, very disturbing road.

But this monster has a weakness – a weak stomach. He can only eat and enjoy good children. Nice children. Children who are innocent, lovely, thoughtful and kind. They used to be everywhere, but these days they are harder to find. Children of today are often bullies, spoiled, teasing, sneering, complaining, boasting or just plain awful. These types of children give the Snark a terrible stomach ache, diarrhea and a LOT of gas.
Starving and at his wits end, the Yark wracks his brains as to where he’d find good children. When all is lost he meets a young girl called Charlotte who turns his world upside down.
A simple but clever tale, The Yark is not for young children or those prone to nightmares. The Yark is truly a terrible monster, but underneath he may just have a soft spot.

Παρόλο που προτείνεται από 9χρ, προσωπικά θα έλεγα πως είναι πιο κατάλληλο για 1-2 χρόνια παραπάνω, ιδανικά να έχουν ξεπεράσει τους νυχτερινούς φόβους. Όχι ότι τους ενισχύει, σε αντίθεση αποδομεί τελικά το τέρας, αλλά μπορεί κάποιες περιγραφές να φανούν δύσκολες.

Παρόλο που προτείνεται από 9χρ, προσωπικά θα έλεγα πως είναι πιο κατάλληλο για 1-2 χρόνια παραπάνω, ιδανικά να έχουν ξεπεράσει τους νυχτερινούς φόβους. Όχι ότι τους ενισχύει, σε αντίθεση αποδομεί τελικά το τέρας, αλλά μπορεί κάποιες περιγραφές να φανούν δύσκολες.

A short little book that fills the same sort of niche as I understand the works of Lemony Snicket or some of the darker bits of Roald Dahl do: archly witty and darkly humorous, and acknowledging that the world is a darker and less safe place than parents like to tell their children it is, while also finding humor in that darkness. An enjoyable enough book, it has a few really good moments (like the suggestion that children are routinely abandoned in forests before they can turn into surly teenagers and ruin their parents' memories of happier times) and some excellent black-and-white illustrations. It feels a bit old-fashioned, strangely, so I'm almost surprised that the original French version is from only 7 years ago.
