Memphis Hoodoo Murders

Rate this book
Addie Jackson has witnessed people trying to kill her family her entire life, and now her grandparents’ attackers are hunting her. The Memphis police are never able to catch these crooks since the cops have been bewitched to stay away. Her grandparents, Pop and Grandma, habitually lie to Addie, but she is attentive enough to overhear the secrets they keep from her. In her predictive dreams, Addie regularly sees future events which disturb her, but to her dismay, she has never been able to stop them from coming true. She often dreams of a dark character, who she is later shocked to discover is the Man, a devil from hoodoo legend.

Addie is disturbed to discover she is being stalked by a witch doctor named Hoodoo Helen. To make matters worse, the more secrets Addie uncovers, the more danger she finds. Addie presses Grandma for answers about the power behind the ring and pocket watch she often toys with, but Grandma remains tight-lipped. Knowing their deaths are imminent, Grandma makes a deal with the hoodoo devil to take care of Addie, and Addie is later horrified to discover that her beloved family has been murdered. John, a family friend, steps in to help Addie, and she soon realizes he knows more about her family’s tainted past than she ever has. Addie begins receiving cryptic letters from her deceased grandmother, which reveal a shocking family history revolving around slavery, time travel, and magic.

If Addie can survive jail, her cousin’s abduction, threats from a menacing gang, corrupt law enforcement, and hoodooed attacks, maybe she can finally dream of a future where she will be safe and free.

Dripping with grisly spells, wry humor and a distinctly southern brand of magical realism, you’ll be quickly mesmerized by this magnetic paranormal thriller. A home run for author Kathryn Rogers. College student Addie Jackson’s young life has been defined by two things: an endless stream of people stalking her grandparents, and the lies her grandparents have told her about them. But Addie hasn’t just spent her entire life looking over her shoulder. Her dreams are a doorway into the future – and she’s terrified by what she sees. I was contacted via email asking if I would like to review this book, of course I said yes and within two weeks I received a complimentary copy through the post. I was really excited to be getting this book and I'm not sure why. I guess it was down to the fact I wondered what it has in store for me.

Addie is 20 years old and living with her grandparents Pap and Grandma and she knows they have secrets and she wants to know them all but they're are reluctant to share them with her for now. Addie also has these dreams that predict the future, and its soon revealed why she has these dreams, but the contents of her dreams always come true with very creepy precision. Pap and Grandma are the sort of grandparents I'd love to have, well beside the hoodoo stuff, they're very wise and caring when it comes to Addie and they always protect her no matter the cost. John is much like her grandparents even though he hasn't know her before the day they meet, he has her do everything he says knowing its the only way to keep her safe but after an event leaves both of them in jail Addie finally meets the dark man in her Dream, The Man. Without spoiling it he is man I'd love to have in my life, caring and honest, and what I like, mysterious. Addie has a best friend called Keisha who is always there to support her and has done since they were young after saving Addie from kidnappers. The pair share and unbreakable bond as Keisha is the only person to know how weird Addie's grandparents really are but once they die the friendship begins to become strained due to a lack of communication and the relationship is tested.

I was excited to read this book, the mention of Hoodoo had me interested straight away, its always been something I loved to think about alongside voodoo. I was excited when I begun reading it, I was simply unable to put it down and even when I did I was itching to pick it up again. For some reason I loved the feel of the cover and maybe that was part of the reason I was barely able to put the book down.

My one point I have to say about this book is that towards the end it seemed to all come at once, throughout the book its all dragged out for a perfect time but in the last 43 pages or so everything just seemed to happen one after another, continuously and I was barely able to keep my head wrapped around it all but it all played out perfectly and I came to not really mind about it much as it all seemed to be necessarily rushed, it needed to be as fast paced as it was and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

I can honestly say I recommend this book to anyone and I mean anyone 16+ no matter what genre you're into because I'm mostly known for reading YA all of the time but this book really got me so maybe it will interest you, after all it does cast a spell on you. I have to rate this book a 4.7/5 just down to the fact of I'm recovering from a fast paced final 43 pages.

Thoroughly great read and I'm thankful for having the opportunity to read and review such a book. I really wish Kathryn success with this novel and any future work.

Addie Jackson has always known her grandparents keep secrets from her, but she has no idea how powerful these secrets are until it’s too late. MEMPHIS HOODOO MURDERS is Addie’s induction into an enigmatic world of danger, power, and intrigue. Addie doesn’t have a lot of help, but her grandparents have made sure she has some potent people on her side. MEMPHIS HOODOO MURDERS is a solid, well-paced story, with interesting characters, strange magicks, and a picturesque setting.

Just finished reading Memphis Hoodoo Murders by Kathryn Rogers. One of the best books I have ever read. After you start reading you will not want to stop. It is full of action, suspence, mystery and humor. Written very well with a lot of southern charm. You will want to get a copy of the book yourself. I highly recommend it. I hope Kathryn will write a sequel real soon. Can't wait.

This book was a wild ride. I loved the Southern setting of Memphis and really enjoyed the parts about hoodoo, which were both creepy and fascinating. The plot was a bunch of twists and turns; I never knew what was going to happen next. I also really loved the diverse characters, especially the grandparents, who were hilarious.

I really enjoyed this book. What I loved about it was the cultural homogeneity of my hometown of Memphis, which dripped from each page in the real places, but also in the "hood lingo." It's nice to be transported back to your hometown. I will be anxiously awaiting the next chapter from this lovely and talented author.

WHO DOES HOODOO ??

Kathryn Rogers certainly does.....this book could have been 100 pages and still it wouldn't have been long enough....she could have learned to use the watch and ring.....
And how about more letters from Grandma June.....if you ever write a follow-up I will be one of the first in line to read it. THANK YOU for a very entertaining read

I’ve been doing an awful lot of reading lately, as it’s been quite a while since I’ve done so. One of those books being the one I’m about to talk about today, Memphis Hoodoo Murders. My thanks go out to Kelsey at Book Publicity Services and Kathryn Rogers for the copy of her debut novel.

The story revolves around Addie Jackson, a twenty-year old college student who has spent much of her life living with, and taking care of, her grandparents Louie and June Jackson. The book is written in the first-person perspective of Addie, so you’ll be better off knowing the grandparents as Grandma and Pop. The family have a history of being on the bad side of people, and after being attacked by the local gang The Skullbangerz, Addie herself is now not safe. When Addie is told by the gang leader that he wants her grandma’s ring, this adds on to the already swirling mystery surrounding the senior Jacksons.

As if that wasn’t enough, Addie has visions of the future; disturbing visions that always seem to come to pass. Also, she is being stalked by a witch doctor named Hoodoo Helen. With local police bewitched by Hoodoo magic, Addie allies are fewer than she would like. Will she be able to overcome the odds and put and end to the persistent threats looming over her family?

Memphis Hoodoo Murders has some good things going for it. I enjoyed the characters and wanted Addie to win the day. She goes through a lot of crap in this story and is a genuinely good person, which is something you don’t see a lot in movies these days. I felt bad for her when tragedy strikes her, which was a refreshing trait. The characters surrounding Addie are believable and have realistic reactions to things going on around them. This realism is because author Kathryn Rogers grew up in Memphis, so she had a good handle of how people spoke, and how they lived. The book has a fairly consistent pace for the most part, and when things slow down or speed up, it’s for a good reason. I wouldn’t say the story is anything groundbreaking, but I didn’t find myself getting bored at any point.

Complaints I have are pretty minor. For one, I kind of expected Hoodoo to play a larger part in the story. The fact of the matter is while there is a lot of talk about Hoodoo, you don’t really get to see any major Hoodoo practice happen until fairly late in the story. Another thing involves the character Gavin, who takes up the majority of Addie’s visions until he shows up in person later. To me he was one of the most interesting characters, and while he had a big part in the book, I felt that I didn’t get to know enough about him or what he was capable of. If a sequel is ever in the works, i would like to learn more about him. And finally, it wasn’t really scary to me. If you’re going in expecting to be scared, you might be disappointed. It’s not really what I would consider horror but if you go in knowing that, you’ll be in a better frame of mind going in.

Despite my minor complaints, Memphis Hoodoo Murders was a very good debut novel in my opinion. Kathryn Rogers has a promising future ahead of her, and it’s clear she has a strong love for writing. I would recommend you check out the novel.

I really enjoyed this book. It follows a young woman, who after the loss of her family, finds out some really crazy mysteries about them that she never knew. Her future is undetermined and depends on how she follows in their footsteps.

This book was written very well and was full of mystery and drama. It had its funny parts too. Overall, I liked all the characters except Geena. She just never won me over.

This was a pretty good read all around!!...Stormi

Kathryn Rogers writes with such charm and wit. A totally engaging story that leaves us wondering what will happen next. So much fun to read a story set in Memphis from someone who lives and breathes it! Can almost hear the southern drawl in fun phrases such as "my mouth dropped open like a catfish." What a hoot! The characters are so real and so descriptive. You have a gift Kathryn, and we look forward to many more stories of Addie to come. I expect to see your books in their very own section on the shelves of our local Lemuria bookstore one day soon!!
