A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Philip Yancey earned graduate degrees in Communications and English from Wheaton College Graduate School and the University of Chicago. He joined the staff of Campus Life Magazine in 1971, and worked there as Editor and then Publisher. He looks on those years with gratitude, because teenagers are demanding readers, and writing for them taught him a lasting principle: The reader is in control!

In 1978 Philip Yancey became a full-time writer, initially working as a journalist for such varied publications as Reader’s Digest, Publisher’s Weekly, National Wildlife, Christian Century and The Reformed Journal. For several years he contributed a monthly column to Christianity Today magazine, where he also served as Editor at Large.

In 2021 Philip released two new books: A Companion in Crisis and his long-awaited memoir, Where the Light Fell. Other favorites included in his more than twenty-five titles are: Where Is God When It Hurts, The Student Bible, and Disappointment with God. Philip's books have won thirteen Gold Medallion Awards from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, have sold more than seventeen million copies, and have been published in over 50 languages. Christian bookstore managers selected The Jesus I Never Knew as the 1996 Book of the Year, and in 1998 What’s So Amazing About Grace? won the same award. His other recent books are Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God’s Image; Vanishing Grace: Bringing Good News to a Deeply Divided World; The Question that Never Goes Away; What Good Is God?; Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?; Soul Survivor; and Reaching for the Invisible God. In 2009 a daily reader was published, compiled from excerpts of his work: Grace Notes.

The Yanceys lived in downtown Chicago for many years before moving to a very different environment in Colorado. Together they enjoy mountain climbing, skiing, hiking, and all the other delights of the Rocky Mountains.

Amazing book! A book I want to own and highlight. Highly recommend! PS I did NOT read the STUDY GUIDE!! Just The Jesus I Never Knew book. Too lazy to copy my review and move it over. I clicked on this study guide accidentally because this matched the cover of the book I read. But oooops…

I picked this book up as something a little different for my study time. It was.
How often do you come across a bible-study type book that's also a page turner? Um, not that often. Frequently they're dusty and theological, rarely exciting and relevant, this is where this book was so different.
Honestly I found that I was having to limit myself, I wanted to keep reading chunks but there was so much to take in, so many thought-provoking ideas and discoveries, that I had to allow myself just a couple of pages at a time.
Philip Yancey's writing is intelligent, clever and accessible.
I've already got another of his books lined up and ready to go, because as a result of reading this one I feel I've got a truer picture of Jesus than I've perhaps ever had.

Phillip Yancey makes some interesting points about Jesus and his life. He brings up the various movie depictions of Jesus and artist's renditions of what Jesus looked like. It's interesting how we have the images stuck in our minds when in fact, we really have no idea of what He looked like except for the verse in the book of Isaiah that describes Him as nothing becoming about him that we would even notice. If you're curious, you need to read for yourself all the other points that are brought up in this book.

This book was my grandmother's and given to me after she passed away. It was wonderful to read with all her highlighting, underlining, and notes. I would definitely recommend this book who would like to understand Jesus on a deeper level.

This actually deserves more than 3 stars - it was a good books, really! However, I now judge every Philip Yancey book by the first one of his I read which blew me away. This exploration of Jesus' life was fascinating, it just didn't stack up to the world-altering "What's So Amazing About Grace?".

I was given a free copy of this book, and finally cracked it open.

Meh, although the subject matter is interesting, Yancey goes about it in a completely trite and one-note kind of way. I sometimes read it when I have an early morning and I need to fall asleep ASAP.

We read & studied this book in a college class "Jesus And The Gospels" at Lubbock Christian University. I know I discovered a wonderful side of Jesus that I fell in love with through this study!
