Mr. Rister, a former professor of history at the University of Oklahoma, describes both the practice and business of taking captives in the southern plains area from 1835 to 1875; to include the struggle for federal and local officials, and family members, to choose between the desire to free the captives and the understanding that paying for their release would contribute to the continuation of the practice.
