A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Philip Yancey earned graduate degrees in Communications and English from Wheaton College Graduate School and the University of Chicago. He joined the staff of Campus Life Magazine in 1971, and worked there as Editor and then Publisher. He looks on those years with gratitude, because teenagers are demanding readers, and writing for them taught him a lasting principle: The reader is in control!

In 1978 Philip Yancey became a full-time writer, initially working as a journalist for such varied publications as Reader’s Digest, Publisher’s Weekly, National Wildlife, Christian Century and The Reformed Journal. For several years he contributed a monthly column to Christianity Today magazine, where he also served as Editor at Large.

In 2021 Philip released two new books: A Companion in Crisis and his long-awaited memoir, Where the Light Fell. Other favorites included in his more than twenty-five titles are: Where Is God When It Hurts, The Student Bible, and Disappointment with God. Philip's books have won thirteen Gold Medallion Awards from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, have sold more than seventeen million copies, and have been published in over 50 languages. Christian bookstore managers selected The Jesus I Never Knew as the 1996 Book of the Year, and in 1998 What’s So Amazing About Grace? won the same award. His other recent books are Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God’s Image; Vanishing Grace: Bringing Good News to a Deeply Divided World; The Question that Never Goes Away; What Good Is God?; Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?; Soul Survivor; and Reaching for the Invisible God. In 2009 a daily reader was published, compiled from excerpts of his work: Grace Notes.

The Yanceys lived in downtown Chicago for many years before moving to a very different environment in Colorado. Together they enjoy mountain climbing, skiing, hiking, and all the other delights of the Rocky Mountains.

First let me say I did not read the Participant's Guide, but the book itself. I clicked on the wrong image and cannot find a way to replace this with the book. So, that said, this book was absolutely amazing. It was a clear, comprehensive, well researched look at the Jesus who was born in and lived in Israel back in ye dayes of before yore, but who was also fully God. When I (and the author, so I am sure this applies to most of us) read the Bible I always assume I would follow Jesus too, although more in a Mary & Martha way than a Peter & John way. I assumed I would of course know He was the Messiah. I assume I would believe in Him, worship Him, and understand His message better than those around Him. But this book makes a strong case for the view that maybe I wouldn't have. He was so 'other' than expected in a Messiah, and his social message so contrary to established teachings, that maybe I wouldn't have. Maybe I would have missed it. I will never know. But I do know that when Jesus said 'blessed are those who do not see and yet believe' that includes me. Because He is the Christ, the Son of the living God. And He is the lover of my soul. Strongly recommend this book. Strongly!

This is a excellent treatment of trying to understand the personality and work of Jesus Christ. You will not find the church's version here, this is based on looking at the life of Jesus in the gospels, and understanding some of the hard sayings. Jesus' attitude towards the society and people of his day is explained with realism. Over all I truly believe this is a thought provoking book that more people need to read, especially Christians.

I found this book really informative and inspiring. It has helped me to a better understanding of Jesus, his time on earth, and his overall plan of salvation. I appreciate the research Mr Yancey put into this work.

I loved this book! I started it years ago, and really took a long time to read it (I actually don't remember if I've even finished it. oops) But the content is really interesting. Philip Yancey is a minister, or some religious leader/teacher, and the view that he takes on explaining Jesus and His life is really neat. He points out a lot of interesting stances, that I never thought of before. The reason why it took/is taking so long to read is because I read a little bit and then have to take a break to let it all soak in. Now that I think about it, I would really love to go back and try and read it again/make sure I finished it. (I had to make sure to have a colored pencil with me while I read - there are some really cool points that I wanted to be able to go back and remember easily.)

I really liked this book. This book actually turned me on to Philip Yancey.

This book went through all of the different portrails of Jesus through out the years in film and in church and Philip Yancey delves into each one of these and then the Jesus the came to know over the years.

There's actually a study guide and video that goes along with this book than really enhances the read.

This book was the first Philip Yancey book that I read and it was so amazing that I still continue to read it now and again. Mr. Yancey truly grasps who Jesus truly was and meticulously removes the taint the church has bestowed on Him.

Excellent writing.. Well researched and well-arranged. My perspective of my savior and my Lord when he was here, when he walked this ground. His love for me and the very purpose of His death and resurrection came as new as ever. Reading this book is a life time experience..

Opened my eyes to information that I'd either never known or forgotten. Excellent book that I'll probably re-read. Although, I think I may have sent it to my son to read... .
