Taking Control of Your Seizures: Workbook

Rate this book
The primary aim of Taking Control of Your Seizures: Workbook is to improve the lives of patients with seizures. Both epileptic seizures and nonepileptic seizures (NES) are prevalent and potentially disabling. The Workbook is designed to be used by a patient with seizures in conjunction with his or her counselor. The Workbook contains step-by-step guidelines that enable patients to take control of their seizures and their lives. The companion Treating Nonepileptic Seizures: Therapist Guide enhances effectiveness by providing session-by-session instructions for counselors who use the Workbook with patients with NES. The authors developed this treatment approach based on extensive clinical experience and research with epilepsy and NES. Many patients who have completed the Taking Control process experience fewer seizures, reduced symptoms, and a greater sense of well-being.

This workbook has proven to be an excellent resource for me as a clinician as well as for clients diagnosed with PNES and referred for mental health treatment or who otherwise feel "kicked to the curb" by neurologists once the EEG comes back indicating their seizures are "not epileptic".

I love the fact that the book doesn't argue or belabor the point of epileptic vs. non-epileptic seizures--it just gets down to the business of addressing the underlying stressors.

I've had clients work through the chapters in order, and find that even those who have been diagnosed for quite some time and think they "know all about it" find new and helpful information throughout. The chapter on processing negative states is so helpful I've begun to use it with clients experiencing panic disorder as well.

Found this workbook very useful, even working through it without the assistance of a seizure counsellor. Highly recommend for patients with non-epileptic seizures looking to better understand their seizure triggers and willing to put the work in to gain control.
