Έρευνα για την εξαφάνιση της Εμιλί Μπρυνέ

Η 34χρονη Εμιλί Μπρυνέ, μοναδική κληρονόμος μιας τεράστιας περιουσίας, εξαφανίζεται. Οι υποψίες στρέφονται αποκλειστικά στον 48χρονο σύζυγό της Κλωντ Μπρυνέ, λαμπρό και αλαζονικό νευρολόγο, ιδιαίτερα αντιπαθητικό χαρακτήρα. Καλείται λοιπόν σε βοήθεια ο συνταξιούχος επιθεωρητής Ασίλ Ντυνό, ο οποίος έχει διακριθεί στο παρελθόν, εξιχνιάζοντας ακόμη και τις πιο δύσκολες υποθέσεις. Αλλά εδώ και λίγο καιρό ο Ντυνό πάσχει από μια μορφή αμνησίας: κάθε πρωί ξυπνά έχοντας ξεχάσει όλα τα γεγονότα της προηγούμενης μέρας. Για να προχωρήσει στην έρευνά του, ο Ντυνό αρχίζει να κρατά ημερολόγιο, καταγράφοντας καθημερινά τις κινήσεις και τις σκέψεις του. Ό,τι γράφει το βράδυ, το διαβάζει το πρωί της επόμενης μέρας, για να καθορίσει τη δράση του. Αλλά πολύ γρήγορα ο επιθεωρητής κατακλύζεται από αμφιβολίες: Μπορεί να εμπιστευτεί τις σημειώσεις του; Γιατί έχει διαγράψει ορισμένα αποσπάσματα; Τι θα έκανε στη θέση του ο Ηρακλής Πουαρό;

Ο Ντυνό, φανατικός αναγνώστης της Άγκαθα Κρίστι, καλεί σε βοήθεια τον Πουαρό, αλλά κυρίως την Αριάδνη Όλιβερ και, ακόμα, τον Χίτσκοκ, τον Ντίκενς, τον Ζιντ...

Πολύ ενδιαφέρον και σίγουρα κρατάει τον αναγνώστη σε τέτοιο ρυθμό που το τελείωσα σε μια ημέρα. Η γραφή και ο τρόπος παρουσίασης της υπόθεσης είναι ιδιαίτερος και καταφέρνει να δώσει μια διαφορετική χροιά στην εξέλιξη της υπόθεσης.
Το παράπονο που σίγουρα θα έχουν πολλοί φίλοι του αστυνομικού είναι ότι στο τέλος δεν έρχεται η τυπική λύση της υπόθεσης.
Αυτό όμως περνάει σε δεύτερη μοίρα καθώς όλο το βιβλίο μπορεί να θεωρηθεί και ως tribute στην Άγκαθα Κρίστι και ειδικότερα στον Πουαρώ. Βέβαια εμφανίζονται και άλλα αστυνομικά έργα αλλά ο Πουαρώ έχει την τιμητική του. Ιδιαίτερη προσοχή όσοι δεν έχετε διαβάσει πολλές από τις περιπέτειες του Πουαρώ γιατί αφ'ενός μεν θα χάσετε ένα μικρό μέρος της γοητείας του βιβλίου, αφ'ετέρου δε θα συναντήσετε πληθώρα spoilers.
Συμπερασματικά θα έλεγα ότι είναι ένα ιδιαίτερο βιβλίο που αξίζει να διαβάσουν οι φίλοι του αστυνομικού.

Θα το έλεγα περισσότερο "διατριβή στο έργο της θείας Άγκαθα". Ο Bello είναι σίγουρα φανατικός θαυμαστής της, παραθέτει κομμάτια από έργα της -ειδικά με τον Πουαρό- και έχει άπειρες αναφορές στις μεθόδους της, αλλά και στη ζωή της.

Μου άρεσε πάρα πολύ αν και θα ήθελα άλλο τέλος. Όμως ήταν απολαυστική η ανάγνωσή του :-)

Ένα βιβλίο αφιερωμένο στο whodunit αστυνομικό. Μια διατριβή με αναφορές στους ''Είκοσι κανόνες για τη συγγραφή αστυνομικών ιστοριών'' του S.S. Van Dine και στους θεούς του είδους. Τον Sir Arthur Conan Doyle και κυρίως στην Dame Agatha Christie, την θεία Άγκαθα που ανανέωσε το αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα και που πάνω στο έργο της βασίζονται περισσότερες από τις μισές αστυνομικές ιστορίες του σήμερα.
Ο Bello στήνει την ιστορία του χρησιμοποιώντας το κυνήγι γάτας - ποντικού μέσα από τις σημειώσεις και τα γράμματα που ανταλλάσουν ο ντετέκτιβ και ο κύριος ύποπτος. Ένα τεράστιο ατού του βιβλίου είναι η ιδέα του συγγραφέα να δώσει τόσο βασικό ρόλο στην μνήμη και την απώλειά τη μια και ο ντετέκτιβ πάσχει από μια μορφή αμνησίας και ο ύποπτος προσποιείται ότι δεν θυμάται τίποτα. Αν και το τέλος είναι διαφορετικό από ότι θα ήθελα, είναι ένα βιβλίο που μου άρεσε και θα έπαιρνε μεγαλύτερο βαθμό αν δεν υπήρχαν κάποιες αστοχίες στην μετάφραση και την επιμέλεια.

ΥΣ: Διαβάζοντας το βιβλίο έσκαγα από ζήλεια για τους ανθρώπους που δεν έχουν διαβάσει Agatha Christie και θα άνοιγαν βιβλίο της για πρώτη φορά.

πιστευώ οτι είστε ένας εξαιρετικός συγγραφέας και η αγάπη σας για το μυστήριο και τη συνομοσία, πηγάζουν από την ανάγκη κατανοησης και εξερεύνησης των μεθολογικων εργαλείων, εφενός του επαγγελματικού πεδίου στο οποίο δραστηριοποιηθηκατε και αφετέρου στην προσωπικη αναγκη σας να αναλυσετε καλυτερα το κόσμο του μυστηριου (συνομωσιας/νουαρ) ή αλλιως πως σκεφτεται και λειτουργει ο κόσμος του "κακου" (κακοποιοι). Αν και δεν εχω διαβασει τα δυο προηγουμενα βιβλια σας -τα οποια θα το κανω διοτι ο τροπος που σκεπτεσθε και υφαινετε τις ιστοριες σας αποδεικνυει ποσο μαστορας ειστε- η Ερευνα αποτελει ενα μια ωδη, στο μαγικο κοσμο του εγκληματικου νου και στον τροπο που σκεφτεται ενας επιθεωρητης. Εξυπνα επιλεξατε τον κοσμο της θειας Αγκαθα (που προσωπικα ολιγον με εκνευριζει, αλλα το παραβλεπω) διοτι σοφα μας αναφερετε οτι οι δυο σοβαροι μελετητες της ειναι γαλλοι, οπως χαρακτηριστικα μας αναφερετε στο τελος του βιβλιου της Ερευνας. Η Ερευνα ειναι λιγο ερευνα και λιγο ιστορια.Αφηνει τον αναγνωστη να ταξιδεψει μεσα στην ιστορια και ταυτοχρονα να ψαξει στον κοσμο της Αγκαθα Κριστι για το τι σημαινει να εισαι "a crooked man". Εχω την υποψια οτι Οι παραχαρακτες θα μου αρεσουν περισσοτερο...Με αγαπη και εκτιμηση μια Αναγνωστρια σας!

By a sheer luck did I get this book in my hands, and I can certainly say it was one of the best reads I had in a long time. Certainly different from the Scandinavian crime fiction I consumed recently, and way better, I have to add. Unfortunately, not being able to read the original, I will have to praise both the author and the translator, in having used one of the most charming languages – so easy and pleasant, yet not overly artistic, keeping an analytic and sometimes scientific tone to it. Absolutely wonderful language, it makes you want to read it all in one sitting (entirely possible, too, for it is a rather concise novel, but the universe inside of it is mind blowing).
Now, I have to confess I haven’t read all of Agatha Christie’s books mentioned in the novel, so I might have missed a lot of fun and easter eggs, or simply details of the plot, not knowing the original references. But I recommend that this book be read both before and after knowing Agatha’s work – I suppose it can better the experience a lot. In regards to the books cited, this novel also doubles as an analysis of the concept of perfect crime, and various dubious characters in Christie’s mentioned novels. It certainly is enjoyable to get a new perspective, rather detailed, over them, for those who are more than casual readers.

When starting to read this book, some might find themselves confused by the strikings over random pieces of the text, and the blackouts – I know I did – until they figure out it is part of the plot. Oh how I wish I’d know what the blackout contained in Dunot’s journal – maybe there were essential details that he obviously cannot remember because of his condition, that could have incriminated Claude Brunet? I tend to believe this, because I refuse to see Brunet as the perfect genius he shows himself to be, and his situation was just too convenient to not be hiding something. He’s a rather unsympathetic character, because of his eccentric behavior and arrogance, although one cannot but stand in awe to his mental capacities (and possibly evil intentions, since his dismiss of the people around him and lack of feelings towards anyone who shows him some, betrays his capability of committing an atrocious crime).
About Dunot I cannot say much; his amnesia doesn’t let a lot of developing for him to happen since he is constantly focused on keeping up with his findings, his continuous struggle is probably the most significant thing about him. And, as Poirot, he demands from others to help him in doing seemingly crazy things in his effort of uncovering the truth (see the search through the piles of mail). I was unsure in the beginning if he’d be able, with his condition, to solve or even get too far in his investigation, and much to my dismay the ending proved so. In all honesty, right after finishing I was disappointed of the open ending, but after giving it a bit of thought, the lack of instant gratification leaves a lot of room to better appreciate the author’s effort in creating this refined certainty that reflects reality – sometimes we cannot know everything, with or without proof. Even if the novel is actually Dunot’s journal that turns out he keeps as his own personal novel, considering the events described are based on a fictional universe that functions like our reality, one can’t imagine that everything happens like in Agatha Christie’s well thought works, as much as Dunot would like to.
I wish I could talk more about other characters, since they all seemed charming in their own way, and never is Dunot suspicious about any of them, which just makes us turn our heads more and more towards Brunet. But that is exactly the technique that makes the book intriguing; it seems that no matter from what side we think of it, it was Brunet’s doing, and I believe that is the what the author wants us to believe, too. Until the last page the reader is kept in high tension, after all the lack of evidence, how will the murderer be finally discovered... but it never happens. Unlike Poirot’s last case, The Disappearance of Emilie Brunet has a modern plot twist, with Dunot simply giving in to the impossibility of the case, in a more realistic scenario that lacks the omnipotence of an already-scripted flow of events.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a refreshing lecture, that makes one think about the amount of effort put into developing such mind games.

In the first paragraph we see sentences with lines drawn through them. What does this mean? We find out that the main character of this first-person narrative is former police detective Achille Dunot, suffering from amnesia since an accident. He cannot remember the days or weeks since his accident before he wakes up each morning.

Because of this Dunot struggles with his thoughts and has to record his investigation on paper for fear of forgetting. As is being disclosed in a further chapter, Dunot has agreed to share his writings with the main suspect Claude Brunet. For fear of disclosing too much Dunot has therefore chosen to erase some sentences.

Also we come to realise that Dunot fancies himself to be one of a great mind like Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot. The references to the Agatha Christie crimes are endless and numerous, whilst the detective varies his theories according to the different plots in the Queen of Crime’s books.

The book sets out as a crime novel, discovering the disappearance of Claude Brunet’s 14 years younger wife Émilie and her lover Stéphane Roget. From the first moment we are lead to believe that professor of cognitive science Claude Brunet has killed them both. But as we get deeper into the book, it turns into a lecture on both the diverse plots of Agatha Christie’s novels as well as no shortage of digressions on several other topics. Some of these topics may add to the mystery, others have nothing to do with the case at hand.

Will we ever get to know what has happened to Émilie? We spot some clues, but are these enough to convict our main suspect Claude Brunet? And what elaborate scheme is Brunet executing by involving Dunot into his game of cat-and-mouse?

A compliment to the author Antoine Bello on his insights into the human brain and the works of Agatha Christie. But the fact that many a book of Agatha Christie was elaborately being explained made the book maybe thorough, but I found it not an easy nor a pleasant read Moreover the book leaves the crime perspective and is actually more a psychological novel, where two seemingly impaired brains are influencing and penetrating the other.

Do you like psychological mind games? Then you will enjoy this book. Personally I found it difficult to like the book and to empathize with the detective Dunot who apparently revels in matching his “grey cells” with that of a brain expert rather than to dive into the crime mystery and discover the solution like his beloved Hercule Poirot.

This novel begins with a sistuation of dissapearance of a wealthy women and her lover. the suspect number 1 is her unfeathful husbend, who clearly doesn't love her and he married her only for her fortune....when the reader goes on, he finds out that the husbend is an interesting person, clever and famous neurogolist . on the other hand the detective Achille Dunot , here we discover that they both ( the detective and the husbend ) have amnesia : Achille always carry a notebook where he jots down his analysis of the case of Émelie.....I want now to share my opinion on this novel, the author took us to the world of psychologie :psychoanalysis,cognitive science ,Interpretation of mental processes...in addition to referring to famous novels written by well- known writers ,Agatha Christy in first place and giving exemples from her novels such as : The Murder of Roger Ackroyd ,Five Little Pigs,Lord Edgware Dies, Poirot's Last Case...the elemnt of suspence was there along the novel ....If you like to see some creations psychological novels that are influenced by the litterature works of queen mystery, then I advise you to read this exciting, interesting novel.

3,5/5 θα ήταν μάλλον πιο δίκαιο. Ευφάνταστο, πρωτότυπο, με πολύ χιούμορ και βέβαια ωδή στην Άγκαθα Κρίστι της οποίας τυχαίνει να είμαι και εγώ οπαδός οπότε ήταν ιδιαίτερη η ευχαρίστησή μου κατά τη διάρκεια της ανάγνωσης. Σίγουρα θα διάβαζα και άλλο βιβλίο του.

Ένα βιβλίο που έψαχνα τον τελευταίο καιρό μανιωδώς (μεταφράστηκε το 2015 και έχει εξαντληθεί) και τελικά εντόπισα σε παλαιοβιβλιοπωλείο της πρωτεύουσας είναι το τρίτο εκ των τεσσάρων έργων του Γαλλοαμερικανού συγγραφέα Antoine Bellο που μεταφράστηκε στα ελληνικά, ένα homage στο αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα και, κυρίως, στη βασίλισσά του. Εμπνεόμενος από την ανεπίλυτη, ως προς τα κίνητρά της, υπόθεση της σύντομης εξαφάνισης της ίδιας της Άγκαθα Κρίστι και συνομιλώντας με το έργο της ( αρκεί κανείς να δει την πληθώρα τίτλων στους οποίους παραπέμπει στον σχετικό κατάλογο στο τέλος του βιβλίου) ο Bello, φανατικός θαυμαστής της, συνυφαίνει τον σχολιασμό του αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος με την κύρια πλοκή του έργου που δεν είναι άλλη από την έρευνα για την μυστηριώδη εξαφάνιση μιας άλλης γυναίκας. Κουρασμένη από τις κατά συρροή απιστίες του 48χρονου συζύγου της, η 34χρονη κληρονόμος αποφασίζει να τον πληρώσει με το ίδιο νόμισμα και ξεκινά τη δική της εξωσυζυγική σχέση με έναν δάσκαλο της γιόγκα. Οι δυο εραστές, λάτρεις της πεζοπορίας, ξαφνικά χάνονται από προσώπου γης. Βασικός ύποπτος ασφαλώς και είναι ο άνθρωπος που δήλωσε την εξαφάνισή της, ο Κλωντ Μπρυνέ, σύζυγος της κληρονόμου από τον οποίο εκείνη ετοιμαζόταν να ζητήσει διαζύγιο. Αν η απιστία της Έμιλι είναι αποδεκτή (για Γάλλους μιλάμε άλλωστε) δεν συμβαίνει το ίδιο με το ενδεχόμενο απώλεια της πλουσιοπάροχης ζωής που του εξασφάλιζε η περιουσία της. Ο σνομπ διάσημος νευρολόγος και καθηγητής που αρέσκεται να υποτιμά τη νοημοσύνη των άλλων μετά από μια ιδιαίτερα βίαιη ανάκριση στο αστυνομικό τμήμα που ωστόσο δεν έφερε αποτέλεσμα θα βρει (;) τον δάσκαλό του στο πρόσωπο του συνταξιούχου επιθεωρητή (όπως ο αγαπημένος του ήρωας Ηρακλής Πουαρό) Ασίλ Ντυνό. Ένα ευφυές απολαυστικό παιχνίδι γάτας και ποντικιού, με παραπομπές στον Μπόρχες, τον Ζιντ, τον Κόναν-Ντόυλ και φυσικά την Κρίστι, ξεκινά.
Δεν ξέρω αν θα μου άρεσε τόσο πολύ αν δεν είχα διαβάσει σχεδόν όλα τα βιβλία στα οποία γίνονται αναφορές, σίγουρα όμως θα τα έψαχνα μετά. Ενδεχομένως η ανάγνωση του βιβλίου, ή ορθότερα η βαθύτερη κατανόηση και εκτίμηση του αριστοτεχνικού τρόπου με τον οποίο χειρίζεται ο Bello το υλικό του, να προϋποθέτει την εξοικείωση με το έργο των συγγραφέων στα οποία αναφέρεται -αν μη τι άλλο έτσι δεν κινδυνεύει από τα spoilers στα οποία αναπόφευκτα καταφεύγει ο συγγραφέας.

Βιβλίο που αποδίδει φόρο τιμής στο έργο της Agatha Christie (γεμάτο spoilers για όσες και όσους δεν έχουν διαβάσει τα βιβλία της αλλά σκοπεύουν) συνομιλώντας και φιλοσοφώντας πάνω στη λογοτεχνία μυστηρίου. Ο Bello παίρνει μια πρωτότυπη ιδέα, τη διαλεύκανση ενός εγκλήματος από έναν συνταξιούχο ερευνητή ο οποίος πάσχει από μια ιδιαίτερη μορφή αμνησίας, κάθε πρωί ξυπνά έχοντας ξεχάσει όσα έχουν γίνει την προηγούμενη μέρα, και τη χειρίζεται έξυπνα στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του βιβλίου. Το τέλος όμως του βιβλίου είναι πιστεύω λιγότερο ευρηματικό σε σχέση με τις προσδοκίες που έχει καλλιεργήσει στον αναγνώστη. Διαβάζεται πάντως απολαυστικά.

Pas vraiment ce à quoi je m'attendais, du coup je suis un peu déçue. Au fond, c'est plus un exposé des romans d'Agatha Christie et d'autres romans, même films, policiers, avec de gros spoilers sur plusieurs d'entre eux. Aussi l'exposition de théorie de Pierre Bayard, concernant Roger Ackroyd en particulier.

Bref, assez désagréable de lire un livre qui parle des enquêtes que tu n'as pas lu en les détaillant, en essayant d'esquiver un peu le texte pour pas trop retenir les divulgations mais en même temps lire pour continuer à suivre... c'est un exercice mental franchement peu appréciable.

A great premise: a police inspector who has lost the ability to store short term memory - the book is his case journal. The book is well written and engaging, but disappointing in the end when it turns out to be more a psychological study case than a detective story. All the clues that you've been paying attention to throughout and trying to figure out seem to go nowhere. I'm all for ambiguous endings, but this one just feels untidy.

Διανοητικά έξυπνο και ερευνητικά ενδελεχές βιβλίο που παίζει με τη ίδια τη πράξη συγγραφής ενός αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος, οκ δεν είμαι φαν ούτε της Αγκάθα Κρίστι ούτε του Μπόρχες αλλά σίγουρα είναι μια ενδιαφέρουσα προσπάθεια.

Διάβασα Άγκαθα Κρίστι με μανία πριν κλείσω τα 20. Δεν θυμάμαι κανέναν χαρακτήρα εκτός από τον Πουαρό και τη Μις Μαρπλ και η «διατριβή» στο έργο της με τις διαρκείς αναφορές και τους παραλληλλισμούς με κούρασε αφάνταστα από τη μέση περίπου του βιβλίου.

Achille è un poliziotto con un inusuale problema: ogni mattina si sveglia non ricordando altro della propria vita che quanto avvenuto prima di quell’incidente che gli ha provocato danni al cervello tali da non consentirgli di formare nuovi ricordi. Incapace di svolgere attività di indagine a cause della sua amnesia, è però costretto a riprendere servizio, quando la polizia riceve la denuncia di scomparsa della giovane e ricca signora Brunet. Achille si ritrova così a doversi affidare ancor più a quel diario in cui già riportava quotidianamente ogni evento, che si trasforma in una dettagliata riproposizione delle sue investigazioni. Questo è il motivo per cui il romanzo si presenta sotto forma di un diario, in cui spesso le pagine assomigliano più ad appunti personali e irrilevanti che a verbali di polizia. In questo modo il lettore non solo segue l’indagine, ma la condivide e fa i suoi i ragionamenti di Achille nel momento stesso in cui anch’egli li formula.

Antoine Bello non è estraneo a idee originali e inusuali. Accanto a questo romanzo, ha scritto e prosegue tuttora la saga dei Falsificatori, che tratta di una società segreta dedita alla creazione di eventi storici con il fine supremo di restituire al genere umano fiducia nelle sue capacità e di spingerlo verso il progresso sociale e tecnologico (tra quelle lì descritte, la più nota falsificazione è l’allunaggio dell’Apollo 11, voluto perché le centrali spaziali aspirassero a obiettivi sempre più alti). Così come in quella saga, in “Émilie Brunet” la forza di Bello sta nel concentrarsi su pochi personaggi e su una trama semplice, con l’obiettivo di costruire fondamenta robuste e verosimili e potersi divertire con gli elementi più inusuali e superficiali. Allo stesso modo che nei Falsificatori, dove bastano pochi capitoli a convincere il lettore dell’esistenza e della bontà di una fantomatica società segreta, qui già al secondo capitolo il lettore si è costruito un’aspettativa su ciò che sta leggendo e si affeziona a quel narratore imbarazzato e annoiato che sa forse meno di lui. I ruoli di protagonista e lettore si confondono e le reazioni dell’uno paiono coincidere con quelle dell’altro.

In un momento quasi metaletteratio, mentre Achille è a colloquio con il principale, e forse unico, sospettato del presunto crimine, i due discutono delle caratteristiche del poliziesco e della definizione che Edgar Allan Poe ne aveva dato, giungendo alla conclusione che un buon romanzo poliziesco è tale solo se il lettore ha gli stessi indizi dell’investigatore e può risolvere il caso contestualmente. I richiami a Poe e ad Agatha Christie si susseguono nel romanzo e sembrano essere preferiti alla narrazione degli eventi da quel narratore parziale che è Achille. Tuttavia, gli innumerevoli momenti metaletterari e la scelta di riportare cancellazioni, irrilevanti osservazioni personali e frasi tra parentesi rendono talvolta il romanzo più retorico che realistico e coinvolgente. Giunti a metà, si inizia a perdere interesse per un caso che sembra banale e allo stesso tempo impossibile da risolvere, lo svolgimento della trama pare essersi interrotto e il romanzo assomiglia sempre più a un esercizio di stile.

Se anche sufficiente spazio è dato all’indagine, Bello sembra interessarsi di più a come questa sia percepita dal suo protagonista, che a portarla a conclusione. La grande rivelazione allora si trascina, ma vari elementi la anticipano tanto da renderla meno incisiva di quanto avrebbe potuto essere, se fosse stata oggetto di un semplice colpo di scena. Si giunge dunque alla fine quando l’interesse per la rivelazione si è ormai perso, insieme alla spinta di continuare nella lettura, non fosse per lo stile coinvolgente e per i costanti riferimenti metaletterari. Quella che dovrebbe essere una sfida tra gatto e topo si trasforma in realtà in un convivio in cui un poliziotto e il suo sospettato dialogano sull’idea di omicidio, sulla giustificabilità del movente e sugli elementi che un crimine deve avere per essere perfetto. E, forse, sono gli stessi annoiati personaggi a rimpiangere per primi di essere parte di questa indagine, anziché di un romanzo di Agatha Christie.

Fans of Agatha Christie may well enjoy this story of a detective who believes the answer to any crime puzzle can be found in The Queen of the Golden Age’s works. Three aspects made it fun for me.

First, there is spotting Christie references such as the suggestion that the police should look for Emilie in a spa (as in Christie’s own mysterious disappearance and in one of her short stories). Or the “pathetic little man, chemist by training, who hides his existential insecurity behind a pointed goatee and who tends to pontificate” and reminds me of Alfred Inglethorpe.

Second, there is the stimulation to reread many Christie works in order to better “take sides” in the author’s contest over the merits of certain Christie detectives over others.

Third, there is collecting the references made to other crime and mystery works. There are direct references to R. Austin Freeman, Emile Gaboriau, Shakespeare, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Charles Dickens. Bello’s discussion of how what we write or think creates reality may apply here: The mailroom scene evokes the BBC production of Terry Pratchett’s Going Postal, while the arrival of a detective with a paper covered in “names and arrows in all kinds of colors” brings to mind the case maps of Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs and similar drawings so often used by televisions’ Jake and Malachy Doyle (Republic of Doyle) and William Murdoch (Murdoch Mysteries—disclaimer: I have not read her books and author Maureen Jennings may have Murdoch use this technique in print too.)
However, some readers will find there is too much exposition through dialog and journaling rather than through action. Perhaps that is necessary for application of the “little gray cells.” Discussions of how to write detective novels (“Crime novels wouldn’t be 250 pages long if it were possible to guess who the murderer is after the first 125,”) and of psychology (“If Brunet is pretending, he will ultimately betray himself. One day, a detail proving he never lost his memory will slip out mid-sentence. That being said, you won’t necessarily be better off – you’ll know he’s lying, not what he’s hiding,”) help lead to the denouement, one which does not “… most scrupulously observe…” Golden Age conventions.

I wish Bello had not felt it necessary to provide spoilers for Lord Edgeware Dies, Ten Little Indians, Death in the Clouds, Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Three Act Tragedy, The Nemean Lion, Murder on the Links, The Dream, ABC Murders, Toward Zero, Curtain, The Chocolate Box, The Hollow, Appointment with Death, Cards on the Table, Dead Man’s Folly, and The Case of the Discontented Soldier. This means readers who have not enjoyed Agatha Christie’s work yet should read these titles before beginning the Disappearance of Emilie Brunet. That said, it is true that one of the references to other writers and attention to the long discussions will point to the denouement. Which ones? Nope, I don’t do spoilers.

Quel joueur cet Antoine Bello !
Ce roman commence comme une enquête policière de facture extrêmement classique : un coupable manifeste, un enquêteur motivé, et aucune piste. Mais très vite, ça dérape : l'enquêteur souffre d'amnésie antérograde (donc il ne se souvient pas de la journée précédente, uniquement de ce qui a précédé l'accident - dont on ne saura rien), et le coupable a une mémoire et une intelligence supérieure. Qui plus est, leur relation évolue rapidement vers une forme curieuse d'amitié, voire de complicité, voulue par le meurtrier. Evidement, tout cela ne devrait pas empêcher la recherche de la vérité.
Sauf qu'encore une fois, Antoine Bello est joueur, et préfère largement jouer avec nos attentes.
Par conséquent, l'enquêteur, qui est aussi le personnage principal, va rapidement dériver et nous emmener dans une série de digressions sur ses sujets préférés : Agatha Christie et Hercule Poirot. On aura donc droit à quelques explications de textes aussi subtiles qu'utiles au récit, puisqu'elles permettent souvent à notre enquêteur de remonter la pente de sa mémoire perdue.
Qui plus est, ces digressions vont nous permettre d'envisager cette enquête sous plusieurs jours incluant de façon non exhaustive les pistes suivantes :

Le coupable a bien tué sa femme et l'amant de celle-ci
Le coupable n'a rien fait, et sa femme est partie avec son amant
L'enquêteur a tué la femme du coupable, et il en a perdu la mémoire
L'enquêteur a absolument tout inventé

Et naturellement, ces thèses mutuellement exclusives sont totalement indécidables : il est impossible de déterminer laquelle est la bonne, si tant qu'il y en ait une bonne.
Tout cela est fort bien, et l'auteur joue magnifiquement avec mes attentes. Hélas, il y a une constante dans le roman policier avec laquelle il joue un peu trop, c'est celle de la résolution de l'enquête : la dernière page lue, le roman fermé, je suis incapable de décider quelle thèse est la bonne. Et c'est terriblement frustrant.

As a die-hard fan of Agatha Christie, the fact that detective Achille Dunot believes all cases can be solved through the work of Agatha really caught my attention and brought me to read the book. The unusual way in which it is written (through the diary of Achille Dunot) and the fact that the detective suffers from a peculiar form of amnesia (forgetting everything that happened the day before, hence the need of a diary) is genius and I was so engrossed in the story that I finished it in 2 days (funnily enough the second fastest book I read after... Agatha Christie's "The Man in the brown suit" which I read within a day). References to Agatha's books and personal life abound and the ending will leave you speechless. A very good read indeed and I strongly recommend it.

"Διδακτορική διατριβή στο έργο της Αγκαθά Κρίστι", αυτός θα έπρεπε να είναι ο τίτλος αυτού του πονήματος (δεν μπορώ να θεωρήσω αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα). Ευκολοδιάβαστο και ευχάριστο βιβλίο. Πραγματικά, το διάβασα απνευστί. Αλλά δεν μπορώ να το βαθμολογήσω με μεγαλύτερο βαθμό, γιατί πολύ απλά δεν ήταν μυθοστόρημα. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του βιβλίου περιέχει περιλήψεις και ανάλυση των βιβλίων της Αγκάθα Κρίστι, που, ενώ έχουν πολύ ενδιαφέρον, δεν θα ήθελα να δω στο πλαίσιο ενός αστυνομικού μυθιστόρηματος. Μάλιστα, η εμμονή του συγγράφεα με την Αγκάθα Κρίστι και, το λογοτεχνικό τέκνο της, Ηρακλή Πουαρό φτάνει σε τέτοιο σημείο, ώστε ο πρωταγωνιστής της υπόθεσης να αναζητεί εντελώς αυθαίρετα, κατά την άποψή μου, και ανεπιτυχώς παραλληλισμούς της υπόθεσής του με τις υποθέσεις των έργων της Αγκάθα.

A great premise: a police inspector who has lost the ability to store short term memory - the book is his case journal. The book is well written and engaging, but disappointing in the end when it turns out to be more a psychological study case than a detective story. All the clues that you've been paying attention to throughout and trying to figure out seem to go nowhere. I'm all for ambiguous endings, but this one just feels untidy.

“Close your eyes and clear your mind of everything you know about the case. Leave yous suspicions aside for a moment. Banish from your memory even the names of the suspects. Then read the case over again in one sitting. It will always reveal a new truth" ... a valuble advice for a reader approching to read this interesting hunt.

Very good book! I love the originality of the main character and the nod to the Queen of Crime throughout this book. No more clues, you have to read it for yourself. Enjoy!!
