AJ grew up in Perth, Western Australia. She is the third of six children and her first exposure to romance was her parents. Now married for almost 55 years, they have always been her example when working on her own marriage and parenting skills.
Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters and Georgette Heyer, were the writers she grew to love in adolescence and still loves now. Her list of favorite authors now has grown to include, not only historical but also contemporary authors as well. Sadly, she doesn’t have as much time to indulge in novels as much as she would like. Her family and now writing her own novels, keeps her very busy, but you will always find a book on her nightstand.
Other hobbies include cooking, one her favorite television shows is The Next Iron Chef on Food Network, and traveling, the UK and the Caribbean her favorite places to visit.
She and her husband of 28 years, reside on the west coast of the USA and have two grown children, making them empty-nesters, and recently adopted a rescued puppy, Max, from the local humane society.

I was gifted this book by the author for an honest review

A coffee date does not a relationship make. How do you explain to your family that you have found the perfect woman to perhaps marry and have a family? This is my first book by the author. I will not be the last.
Alex Beaumont, from Charleston, flies to Chicago to visit his sister, Charlie. Tanner, Charlie’s husband, is helping Alex to finalize a real estate deal to sell some of this family’s property in Charleston to build a resort and spa. While visiting, he becomes a victim of crime. Two detectives, Mia and Smith, investigates to help retrieve his most prize possession. He spends time with Mia helping to solve the case.
Meet Mr. Alex Beaumont, southern gentlemen extraordinaire. He is considerate with excellent manners. He value traditions and family. He believes in taking care of the woman in his life. What a gentlemen! If you are looking for an honest to goodness, totally romantic story that you can give to your 16 year old to read…you have found it. What a tear jerker! I was literally in tears of happiness how Alex expressed his feelings to Mia. I had so much pinned up emotion while reading this book. And the HEA made the flood gates open wide. It was like the characters where people I knew from next door.
Fate brings them together again after spending some weeks apart. He is given an opportunity to test the waters with her in determining how she might feel toward him. After all, they have not interacted with each other outside the police investigation. Mia doesn’t want to have a relationship, because she believes every one she cares about eventually dies. It is so loving how Alex wants to take care of Mia. And in that moment, Mia realizes maybe she has the opportunity to be happy.
The characters in the story were very well developed. The author, AJ Harmon, introduce the characters as if you were watching a television show panning from one person’s daily life to the other. This is the first time I have read character development like that and it was beautiful. Every character was given a story. The book was essentially about Alex, Bess (his mother) Charlie (his sister) Tanner (her husband), Mia and her partner Smith.

This book was fantastic. Once I started reading I couldn’t put it down. There was danger, romance, suspense and more. There is a lot of back and forth between Mia and Alex. They are both interested in each other but Mia has doubts about starting anything with him. He lives in Charleston, South Carolina and she lives in Chicago. Alex doesn’t want to pressure her into anything but isn’t scared to tell her how he feels. Neither has ever really been in a serious relationship. He wants to be there for her but to him it’s clear she doesn’t want the same thing. Alex is also runs the family business and takes care and his mother who isn’t well. Mia has always wanted to be a detective. Who should move, who should uproot their life? This book was so sad at times. With Mia and Alex trying to figure out what if anything was going on with them. Alex’s mother’s declining health. I think Alex’s mother helps them bond more. Alex’s sister Charlie and her kids are great and funny. Mia learns what is important to her and what she can do without. She discovers that she can be a cop anywhere. Does she want to stay in Chicago and further her career or does she want to go to Charleston and be with the man she loves and be a cop? This book was fantastic and another hit for AJ Harmon. I love her and her books.

4 stars for Chicago-a shot to the heart changes everything by AJ Harmon. If you are looking for a sweet, wholesome romance, this is the book for you!

When southern gentleman, Alex Beaumont, meets the tough yet sweet Mia from Chicago, they don't really think they would have anything in common. However, after having dinner one night, they each discover that they are quite attracted to one another. They are each in their 30's, and shockingly, neither one of them has ever been in a serious relationship. To say that they both need to experience that unconditional love and support in their lives would be a huge understatement. It will take sacrifices on both sides, but if they are willing to take some risks, they might just find what has been missing in each of their lives.

AJ Harmon is an excellent wordsmith who brings both her characters and the places she writes about to life through her descriptive details. I honestly felt like I was right there in the middle of the story alongside the characters experiencing their ups and downs with them. I really look forward to reading more from this author! This is a book that I would 100% recommend!

**FULL REVIEW**

"You think that moving to be with the man you're in love with is giving up your life? I would have thought it was finding it."

This was one of those books that had a hard time keeping my interest. Sure, there was a little bit of turmoil and some sad realities, but at the end of the day it just didn't do "it" for me.

This is a story that follows a woman detective and rich heir to a southern fortune. A classic 'two sides of the coin' story with a little violence and illness thrown in the mix to make it interesting...or at least more interesting.

I can't say I hated it, because that wouldn't be the right word. I'm...indifferent. I really felt nothing when I read this story, it just wasn't my cup of tea.

It's nicely written and the characters can be relatable, just not to me. I could not connect to them or the storyline, even while feeling sympathy for some of the situations. I would say, if you like a softer read, something that will not rip your heart to shreds but give it just a little twinge; this is perfect for you.

I just require more.

This was such a captivating book. I was hooked in from page one. Alex is from a long line of self-made men. Alex travels to Chicago to visit with his sister. During his stay he's robbed and his family heirloom is stolen. The watch was a gift from a king and has been handed down from generation to generation. Alex cannot have this watch disappearing on his turn as guardian. The detective in charge of his case steals his heart. She's very independent and only ever wanted to be a detective. Fortunately his watch is located, but his heart will never be the same without Mia in his life. Neither of them are willing to re-locate. She loves her job and his soul is in South Carolina where his family has held roots since crossing from England. His mother's health is also in decline and he couldn't bear leaving her either. The ache for these two is unbelievable.

This story was captivating, interesting and took me no time at all to read. I read this in one sitting- I couldn't put it down. To me, that's proof of a good book and a good writer!

I wasn't sure where this story was going at first, but I enjoyed the characters. Alex and Charlie, brother and sister from a well-to-do family in Charleston, Mia and Smith, Police Officers in Chicago. This story is sweet, sad and felt quite realistic. It was easy to get lost in their world and what was happening to them. I enjoyed the closeness of Alex's family and the way he fell for Mia. They weren't looking for each other when life brought them together. She tried to fight it but found that life had changed when Alex appeared in her life. I will definitely be reading more from this author!

Oh AJ has done it again and stole my heart. I keep thinking she can't top her last book and then she does it again. Chicago is all about Mia and Alex both in their 30s and learning what being in love is all about. If you have read any of her Sky Romance books you don’t want to miss this one, and if you haven’t they can all be read as standalone books so don’t wait! One thing AJ is outstanding with is making you feel like you not only know the characters but you get so sucked into the books it’s like you are standing next to them. I hope everyone enjoys this book as much as I did!

Two adults in their 30's who have never been in a serious relationship find love in the most unexpected way. There were some heart wrenching moments and some moments that made me laugh out loud. Alex and Mia need to find love...and they do! It was entertaining wondering all the way through if the distance between them (they live in different parts of the USA) or their professions would keep them apart. A.J. knocked another one out of the ball park with this great read!

This was a romance formed by mishaps and life altering events but what touched me was how the live of a parent sealed the deal. Bess played a HUGE part in this coupling and made Alex and Mia understand what giving your all and loving regardless of the circumstances and distance is all about. This is my first book by AJ Harmon and I enjoyed the vision and the struggle in which both main characters endured.

Love the romance in this book.

The Beaumont family in this book are awesome. Alex and Mia are so cute in their love story. They start out slow but then the love rises. Charlie and Tanner and their family are so awesome. It is sad about the mom but they all deal with the mom wonderfully. All the people in this book are awesome and they mix well together. Another fabulous book by A.J.

I really enjoyed this story, it is the third book in the series and can be read as a stand-alone. I really enjoy the characters and love how Mia and Alex come together and how Mia finds love in her empty world. Love the love between Alex and his mother and how Mia fits so well with them. I hope they get a book too. Would love to hear more about this family and their story.

I love A.J. Harmon's work usually and the characters she creates you fall in love with. Here, though, I struggled to connect to with both Alex and Mia - it all felt a bit blah. I found Alex's relationship with his mother and the rest of his family special and this helped drive the story forward.
