Jeffrey A. Krames is an American author whose books have been translated into more than 36 languages. Before 2020, Krames established his own "publishing and literary agency", JK Literary Services. Krames is the former editor-in-chief of Portfolio, the business book imprint of The Penguin Group and the former Vice President and head of the trade division of McGraw-Hill.
Humbly put, this is a brilliant, thought-provoking book. I was sceptical before I opened it and I was a convert before the end of the first chapter.
Not being a Catholic, or particularly religious, my knowledge of the Pope - any Pope - is restricted to a passive interest, taken from the general news. Of course, the election of a Pope is a “Big Thing” for the media and the election of Pope Francis and his “positively different” attributes had even lodged itself somewhere deep in my mind. When I saw the publicity material for this book I was intrigued to see how the head of the Catholic Church could somehow be shoehorned into a book about business leadership.
Read and prepare to be supremely informed.
The author carefully weaves together a wonderful series of stories about Pope Francis without recourse to hyperbole or cliche. It does not sound like a long-form press statement issued by the Vatican. Instead elements of Pope Francis’s life - both past and present - are brought into focus through the lens of a business-orientated magnifying glass, making a informative read. There are very few business-related books that feel hard to put down for another day. This is one of those you just have to keep reading.
My electronic copy of this book received so many annotations I thought I’d run out of memory on my tablet. This book managed to be inspirational and all-encompassing without trying. Naturally it has to have a subjective veneer, reflecting the author’s own interpretations and research, yet this does not feel in anyway unbalanced, biased or remote from the reader. The humility of the author seems to mirror the same attributes ascribed to Pope Francis.
Even if you have a bookshelf - electronic or physical - full of business books and not room for one more this book is really so considerate, worthwhile and actionable that you should consider “deleting something” and making room somehow. If you then remain sceptical and in doubt - and scepticism is an essential tool for every person in business - go and check the book out in person. Prepare your wallet or purse for a purchase!
If only other business-focussed books could follow this style and approach! I challenge you to really, truly read through this book and not find at least one good hint or tip you could implement.
Lead with Humility: 12 Leadership Lessons from Pope Francis, by Jeffrey A. Krames and published by AMACON Books. ISBN 9780814449110, 144 pages. YYYYY.
Leadership does not come easy to me. There are some aspects of middle and upper management that I really do enjoy, but taking on these roles is more of a matter of economic necessity for me. That disclaimer aside, this is one of the best leadership books I’ve ever read.
The premise is that “Pope Francis shows himself to be a leader who understands that leaders lead people, not institutions.” Some of the principles espoused here include practical business adages such as “reinvent your organization,” but they are coupled with ethical mandates, such as “maintain the greater good.” You can see much of Francis’s Jesuit training and philosophy and many principles of Ignatian spirituality at work here, such as utilizing moments of discernment, decision making, and experiencing “interior experiences of darkness” to grow as a human being and leader.
Overall, Francis reminds us to “...never forget that authentic power is service.” There are important messages to be read here in this quick, solid read, whether or not you are religious or Catholic. By following Pope Francis’s leadership principles, you can successfully embrace a practical, spiritual, and ethical leadership style.
This book was written by the son of a Jewish Holocaust survivor who feels Pope Francis has leadership skills that go beyond the religious aspect and make sense in the business world. He goes through 12 of the principles Pope Francis used in his leadership which are a great lesson for corporate America. Pope Francis is Pope for the people like Pope John Paul II was, and his emphasis is on humility as a leader. Never ask your people do anything you would not do and never out yourself above them. Pope Francis washed the feet of the poor, and was the first Pope to wash a women’s feet. I would love to share this with the leadership team where I am employed.
This was a quick and interesting read, with some good leadership ideas. Nothing extraordinarily new, however seeing how they relate to the Pope and to businesses alike was a refreshing twist on just reading things like, "and here is yet ANOTHER company example and data" which many leadership books present and they get to be dry. The nice thing about this book is that even tho I am of the faith, it did not in any way push an agenda on people--it is simply factual. If you are an open-minded individual wanting to see how leadership is done from another viewpoint, you will enjoy this read.
"Leaders lead people, not institutions." The author demonstrates how this is the philosophy of Pope Francis by citing 12 leadership lessons from the Pope's life. Some of the lessons are standard business common sense, others reflect the counter-cultural and surprising leadership secrets of the kingdom of God. Some of the lessons are "Lead with Humility," "Don't Change - Reinvent," and "Choose Pragmatism Over Ideology." The book is short - as it should be.
I enjoyed this book quite a bit more than I expected. Pope Francis has breathed new life into the Church. The author does a good job of looking at Francis' humble, but far from meek, style and translating that to business leadership. Several concepts spoke to me on a personal level as I build up a client base for my business.
A short read and good run down of how to lead with humility in 12 steps with examples from the beginning of Pope Francis's tenure. I agree that humility is something many leaders (myself especially) do not do very well. Not only for Catholics, this book promises to provide ideas and examples of how to practice humility and servant leadership in a variety of business settings.
1) Lead with humility 2) Smell like your flock 3) Who am I to judge? 4) Don't change. Reinvent 5) Make inclusion a top priority 6) Avoid insularity 7) Choose pragmatism over ideology 8) Employ the optics of decision making 9) Run your organization like a field hospital 10) Live on the frontier 11) Confront adversity head-on 12) Pay attention to non-customers
I had trouble understanding the perspective of the author, considering this man is not a catholic and yet he easily discover all good points in the Jorge Mario Bergoglio; my problem is not that, but the business perspective as a final product. i can tell Krames approves and is amazed by the pope. and all the 12 points of leadership are correct under my point of view. maybe the thing is that as a catholic i probably apply this points in my social relationships. but trying to apply this 12 step in business is somehow a new concept to me. i got to tell i liked the book, it was pretty interesting, maybe i am convinced that you have to apply good practices in all you do in life.
I love reading about Pope Francis and this book had some interesting details about his life and leadership style. Not the best leadership book applicable to my type of work, but he is a very accomplished man with a unique and honorable leadership style
leadership as vision and motivation to carry-out, service most important, who am I to judge, respectful dialogue, don’t judge assess, to reinvent, inclusive dialogue, peace talks with Israel and Lebanon, as MASH, decentralize, go to the people where they are, speak truth to adversity, inspirational humility.
Lead with humility, smell like your flock, who am I to judge, don't change - reinvent, make inclusion a top priority, avid insularity, chose pragmatism over ideology, employ the optics of decision making, run organization like a field hospital, live on the frontier, confront adversity head-on. pay attention to non-payers (outsiders).
This book is a great refresher for leaders - church or corporate about how to be a strong leader. As the title suggests, using the lens of humility there are many strengths we can draw from the example of Pope Francis.
Krames just gave me 12 great reasons to be more impressed with Pope Frances. In addition strategies to help guide leaders be more humble. Enjoyed the book. I would read it again and certainly recommend.
Very objective and smooth. Simple to read. Each chapter has a final comclusion with the leadership tips to get from Pope Francis. The fact that the author is atheist increase a lot the purpose of the message. The relationship between Pope Francis leadership and Peter Drucker notes is great.
A leader is what he does and in the case of Pope Francis in the frontiers meeting the needs of the sick, the poor, and the naked. The book id written by a non-Catholic who has made this humble pontiff appear even more earthly. Good read.
I love how this book flips from the Catholic Church to business. It shows that the leadership traits in both should be and are very similar. Very quick read from an outsider on the subject.
