She knows every romance trope in the book. She's living one on loop. Nora Dale is a romance novelist. She knows a Meet-Cute when she sees the spilled coffee, the eye contact, the pull toward a stranger she's definitely never met before. Except she has. Too many times to count. Trapped inside Second Draft, an experimental VR-AI authoring platform, Nora is being run through romance novel scenarios on loop by someone who knows exactly how to weaponize the genre against her. The world runs on Trope physical, enforceable rules that bend reality toward romantic convention. These rules aren't metaphors. They're mechanics. And someone is using them to rewrite her. The only way out is to stop trying to escape the story, and start authoring it herself.

ARC REVIEW

What happens when you know every romance trope in the book… and suddenly you’re trapped living them?

Second Draft was such quick read! Nora is a romance novelist who finds herself trapped inside an experimental VR-AI platform, forced to relive romance scenarios over and over again. Think meet-cutes, instant chemistry, familiar tropes - and a world where the rules of romance actually control reality.

I really enjoyed the way the story plays with the idea of AI, reality, and what it means to know what’s real and what isn’t. It definitely made me stop and think about how easily technology could blur those lines, especially when AI is capable of creating entire worlds and experiences.

It’s a quick, entertaining read with a clever premise, plenty of romance tropes, and some bigger questions hiding underneath.

This book felt like Groundhog Day meets The Matrix. It follows the story of a writer who is betrayed and becomes trapped in an AI-generated simulation. With the day resetting repeatedly, the plot was sometimes difficult to follow, especially with the introduction of two male characters early on.

I found the pacing slow in the first part of the book, but everything started to come together around the middle. Once the story gained momentum, the concept became much easier to follow and increasingly engaging. The overall experience was quite trippy and thought-provoking.

What I enjoyed most was how different it was from my usual fantasy reads. The premise felt surprisingly realistic and plausible as a near-future scenario, which made it even more intriguing. While it took some patience to get into, I ultimately enjoyed the book and would read it again.

Second Draft is the perfect short read for people who love the show "Black Mirror" or the game "Detroit: Become Human." I became so invested in Nora's journey back to herself and found myself rooting for her and the character Ryan.
I only wish it were longer. I'd love to spend more time watching Nora's emotions developing for the love interest with every reset.

This book was a mix between 50 first dates and The Matrix where the author is stuck in VR-AI world and fighting with or trying to gain control over her tropes.

The first 40% of the book was very repetitive and slow for me. I understand why that was done for the purpose of understanding what it felt like for Nora to be stuck, but when two new characters or names emerged without an explanation to the reader I was a bit puzzled. Had to read back and make sure I wasn't the one that mistakingly skipped a page or two. The pacing did start picking up after that and there was more movement to the story with the entry of Ryan.

The ending was rather abrupt and felt a little rushed especially after all that Nora went through until that point. Perhaps it was intentional.

I want to thank the author Jean Soule and BookSirens for providing this copy of the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
