Four-time Formula One Drivers' Champion Alain Prost is one of the best racing drivers of all time. Having discovered karting at the age of 14 during a family holiday, Prost progressed through motorsport's junior ranks, winning the French and European Formula Three championships, before joining the McLaren Formula One team in 1980 at the age of 24. In his six seasons with McLaren, he won 30 races and three driving titles and in 1985 he became the first French World Champion. In 1986 he became the first back-to-back champion since Jack Brabham 26 years earlier. In 1987, his 28th Grand Prix victory beat Jackie Stewart's 14-year-old record. However, in 1988 his new teammate Ayrton Senna won eight races and the driving title. Thus began the sensational rivalry that conspired to push two of the sport's greatest drivers to unprecedented heights of success and controversy, and the most bitter feud in Formula One history.
5 stars, no questions asked. It's one of the few nonfiction books I've read and I think I'm starting to like this genre, but only biographies and autobiographies seem to be my jam.
Anyway, back to the book. I loved the pictures used and I loved that Alain was portrayed as a humble guy. The book emphasized his qualities, as well as his weaknesses. The book focused on his racing career mostly and had interviews with people who worked with him over the years. His rivalry with Ayrton Senna was described too and his other relationships with his other teammates and it's good to see that not a lot of things changed from that time in terms of friendships and rivalries on the grid. Also, more details about Alain's personal life would've been good too because there were some just in the beginning. It would've been good to have them throughout the book.
I loved that I learned some things about how Formula 1 used to be and how it became what it is now. The historical part of this book was well documented.
I recommend this book if you're a Formula 1 fan or even if you're not and just want to find out more about the history of the sport and some of its greatest drivers.
Good, complete, biography of Alain Prost with thorough commentary from other giants of the F1 world. I tracked this book down after watching the Senna documentary. After reading this book it's obvious that in real life he wasn't the character that the filmmakers portrayed him to be. Read & decide for yourself.
