Soapers

Rate this book
‘Soapers’ is the story of a social movement that emerged in April, 2011 when Disney/ABC simultaneously announced the cancellation of not one but two popular daytime soap operas, ‘All My Children’ and ‘One Life to Live.’ At first soap fans were numb and in shock. Then they got angry. ...And then they got organized.

The Day The World Crashed

For millions of Soap Opera Fans, our world crashed and burned on April 14, 2011. Ask any soap fan and they can most likely tell you exactly where they were that day, much like the day of JFK's assassination, or the murder of John Lennon, or when Princess Diana died. April 14, 2011, was the day ABC/Disney took two beloved soaps and put them on the cancel list.

In Flo DiBona's book, one can return to that day, and remember not only the shock and sadness we all felt, but also the wave of fans connecting and becoming a force that no one ever expected. Fans rallied to the call of SAVE OUR SOAPS! They petitioned, they created Facebook pages and joined in on rallies, letter writing, phone calls, and just about anything you can imagine all with one purpose in mind. To show the PTB that soaps still belonged.

Flo returns us to that time and then brings us forward to the new age of Soap type shows via the web. She weaves the reader through each moment, each rollercoaster ride the fans were on while trying to prove our shows mattered.

And we did show people. We may not have our old stories back (yet) but because of that fateful day, we have all become a "family" to be reckoned with. We still have 4 on TV, we have new series popping up on the web, and we are all still connected online.

Jump in and ready "Soapers". Remember what we went through, together, and how strong we have all become.

Thumbs up to MS DiBona for hitting this period out of the ballpark!
