For readers who loved Silver Elite, Daggermouth, and Crescent City.
Everything vibrates at its allotted frequency. Stone. Water. Fire. Fear. Rage. Love. In the Territories, that energy is regulated. The Concord decides what citizens are allowed to access—fire for cooking, water to grow crops. Every tattoo is measured, capped, contained. Power is permitted only in doses that keep people useful but never dangerous. Zyva is a Resonant Engineer. She knows the system from the inside—how frequencies bind to skin, how they can be amplified, suppressed… and where they break. She also knows the Concord is lying about how much power a human body can hold. After they took her family, she started breaking the rules. Quietly. Deliberately. Building something powerful enough to take the system down with it. Thane Aric is a former Guard of the Concord. Controlled. Observant. Built like a weapon—and disciplined enough to be one. He challenges her. Watches out for her. Gets too close. Around him, the constant hum in her mind quiets, and the silence he offers begins to feel like something more. Around her, his control begins to fracture. As the Concord tightens its grip and public burnings remind the people what happens to those who push too far, Zyva prepares to break the system from the inside out. But revolutions are volatile. So is desire. And when the moment comes to choose between freedom and survival… someone will have to burn.
The ending of this book! 😅🤯 this was a fun, unique, Romantasy read! You guys know I’m not a big Romantasy girl, so I will admit some parts of this were harder for me to connect with at first, but I know that’s a me thing!
The world building, the magic system, and the story line were so different than anything I’ve read! I love a good romance thrown into the action & the chemistry between Zyva & Thane was good!!
This book had your elements of emotion, action, and strong FMC that I absolutely love to see!! This is definitely for the Romantasy lovers who are looking for something outside of the norm! A fun, adventurous story, with tension, chemistry, and heat!! Plus you’re going to go through an emotional rollercoaster during the ride!!! I am very curious to see where this story goes!
Thank you so much Rae for the early reading opportunity!!
OMG… THAT ENDING THOUGH! WHAT?! Ahhh! I NEED MORE NOW!
This book was such a unique read. I really enjoyed the overall premise, and the chemistry between the FMC and MMC was so good. Although it took me a minute to become invested, once I was in.. I was in! The suspense, mystery, and overall atmosphere had me hooked, and I loved how everything came together.
I especially loved the FMC. She was strong, independent, and absolutely capable of holding her own, which made her so much fun to follow throughout the story.
And then THAT ENDING?! Excuse me?! I need answers, and I need the next book immediately! I cannot wait to see what happens next!
This was an absolutely amazing romantasy. Right from the beginning this story pulled me and had me invested. I loved being immersed in the amazing world that Rae created. The description was well done, it played through my mind beautifully. And the magic system was so unique, you can’t help but love it. This story was intriguing. I loved Zyva and Thane. The slow burn between these two had me obsessed. They were so hot, but I loved that they didn’t just jump into each others arms. This played out, and it played out well. But the time that spice hit. Boy was it worth it 🥵. This was such an excellent read. And the first time I’ve read this author. And since this ended on a cliffy, I’ll definitely be waiting for the second book. This is a definite must read.
There is something about a revenge plot that has been carefully and patiently planned… and when it all starts coming together, I love it!
This book brings something different to the table, and I loved that! The abilities in this world are given and controlled by tattoos and elements. When I say abilities, I mean everything, from cooking and heating things to growing plants and basic survival. The magic system is incredibly intricate and detailed. There were moments when I felt a little lost trying to understand it all, but trust me, it was so worth it!
The history that drives our FMC is absolutely gut-wrenching. Watching her take her pain and turn it into strength, using everything she has endured to become a fighter, had me cheering her on!
One of my favorite things to read is watching people come together to fight for something better. Seeing these characters unite, fight for their future, and refuse to give up made this story even more meaningful.
And while there is plenty of heartbreak, there are also lighter moments that let you see the characters in a different way and remind you that even in the darkest situations, there is still room for connection and hope.
The ending!!! WOW. The kind of ending that makes you sit there staring at the page, needing a minute to process everything you just read.
First, let’s just say, Rae has done it once again. This book completely pulled me in! It took me a minute to wrap my head around the world and its unique magic system, which is normal for romantasy, but once everything clicked, I was absolutely HOOKED😮💨 I loved these characters, the magic, the tension, and all this story brought to the table. I was fully invested, emotionally attached, and probably way too stressed🤣
What would you do if your government could use simple vibrations to decide how much freedom you get? Skin Deep captured my emotion from chapter one, delivering a powerful story about survival and strength that I couldn't stop thinking about for days. Skin Deep is written by the amazing, now five-time author Rea Lloyd. This book cannot be placed into a single genre box. While the central plot fits into dystopian narrative tropes, the character arcs blend elements of romantasy with deep personal conflicts. Moreover, well-researched scientific explanations detail how frequencies and tattoos are used by the Concord government to restrict natural rights and freedoms. As Lloyd writes, "When two frequencies meet, they either build harmony or collapse. Difference is measured in the smallest fractions of vibration." While personal vendettas fuel much of the conflict, the novel ultimately takes readers on an emotional journey through love, loss, learning to stand on one's own, and trusting others in the darkest hours. The author did an excellent job portraying the contradictions within human nature, reminding us that people are rarely simply good or bad. I admired Zyva’s courage, resilience, and vulnerability. Thane stole my heart because through his eyes, I saw that the world isn't just black and white—your environment doesn't define who you become, but rather the choices you make with unyielding conviction. Together, Zyva and Thane endure a rollercoaster of emotions that forces them to confront their deepest fears, uniting them in a shared dream to live free from the Concord government. What makes their journey so compelling is how Zyva and Thane's relationship evolves amidst the high-stakes preparations for an uprising against the Concord government. As the days go by and danger escalates, their connection grows significantly stronger and deeper. Working side by side toward a shared cause transforms their initial alliance into a deep, unwavering love. Working side by side toward a shared cause transforms their initial alliance into an undeniable bond.
What do you mean that’s it!!! I need the next book like yesterday!
Rae has once again blown my mind with her absolute brilliance with words. She creates magic every single time.
I rated this book 4.75 stars only because for a moment in the beginning I felt like I almost was not smart enough to grasp this world and the equations and frequencies but once you get going it all comes together and Rae makes it make sense(does that make sense SMH)
I love that Zyva was so powerful and brilliant, not an ounce of weakness in her. She had some moments of being stubborn that made me want to reach in the book and shake her but as you understand her more throughout the story it all makes sense.
Speaking of shaking Zyva…. Oh Jori how I love you and how much you love our girl. He was my favorite character, his style, his personality, his loyalty and love for Zyva ugh swoon!!! I pictured myself sitting in his bar the entire book and can just imagine all the laughs I would have from him and his witty little comments. Rae possesses this power to create characters that will stick with you way beyond the ending of the book and Jori is another one of those characters.
Now Thane holy wow 🥵 there were some moments in the book where I was getting a little hot. His patience was almost too good lol. I was begging him in my mind to just grab Zyva and kiss the crap out of her stubborn self for so long. Thane is definitely hot hot hot.
I do wish there had been more spice if only for the fact that the scenes we did get were just that good I was desperate for more.
The story itself kept me invested the whole time and I wanted nothing more than to forget all my responsibilities to dive back into this world with my new friends.
Rae Lloyd is an Author I will never skip, you will not be disappointed if you read anything she has ever written.
Okay, first of all, can we just appreciate how bloody clever Rae Lloyd is?!
The whole concept of frequencies, connections, and the world she created was genuinely fascinating. The attention to detail was insane, especially all those calculations. Meanwhile, I was sitting there trying to make sense of everything with my last three functioning brain cells. Like ma'am, I came here to read, not solve mathematical equations.
And can we talk about JORI?! Hands down my favourite character. I absolutely loved his style, his personality, and especially how protective he was of Zyva. There's just something about that man.
Now, don't go into this expecting spice around every corner because this is a SLOW burn. And when I say slow, I mean the kind that makes you want to reach into the book and physically shake some sense into the characters.
THANE, FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYTHING, JUST SAY BURN IT AND KISS THE DAMN GIRL ALREADY.
The tension was definitely there, but bloody hell, these two tested my patience.
And then THAT ENDING.
RAE. BLOODY. LLOYD.
The absolute audacity to leave us hanging like that. I was NOT prepared for that cliffhanger, and now I'm sitting here with more questions than answers. Rude. Absolutely rude.
Overall, I really enjoyed this one. The world-building was unique, the characters were intriguing, and I loved how the whole frequency concept tied everything together. It's definitely more focused on the story, connections, and building tension than throwing spice at you every five minutes, which actually worked really well.
Did I understand every calculation? Not a bloody chance.
Am I invested enough to want the next book? ABSOLUTELY.
Reason for 4.75 stars I would have loved more smut 😈
I'm not typically a huge romantasy reader, but having read and loved Rae Lloyds other books, I knew she was going to deliver. And you know what? She absolutely freaking did.
I loved the whole idea of this book from the get-go. Using special tattoo ink to capture the frequency of an element so that the body can then manipulate and *use* that element? That's legit cool as hell. Our FMC Zyva has a devastating past, but instead of letting it hold her back, she used it as fuel, and damn if she isn't a strong, independent baddy!! I seriously love her. She forms a revenge plan against the Concord and becomes reluctant allies with the unexpected -- Thane, a former Guard of the Concord. Their chemistry is soo good, I love their whole vibe. Zyva is all fierce and fiery, while Thane is all mysterious and broody, and completely down bad for his "Red". Did I mention he has a bunch of sexy frequency tattoos, a lil nose ring, and a mouth on him?? Skin Deep is a slow burn, but the tension is 🤌 and while this book isn't *super* high on the spice list, the spice that's written is hotttt!
After that ending I'm honestly not sure if I finished the book or if it finished me 🤔Rude, Rae, rude 😅
Thank you so much to Rae for allowing me to read and review, I LOVED it, but now I need book 2 immediately!!
This was such a fantastic read that had me in its grip throughout the entire book. I laughed, cried, and wanted to throw my kindle because the yearning was driving me crazy. 😜
I really enjoyed the magic system, it was so unique. Frequencies are tied into tattoos, it’s kind of hard for me to explain, but it was really badass.
I loved the main characters, Zyva and Thane. Zyva (FMC) is feisty, independent, strong, and basically a genius. Thane (MMC) is an ex-commander that is powerful, mysterious, SEXY, and has it BAD for Zyva. The banter between them was so good and as the story went on the way their relationship developed was perfect. Such a good slow burn! ❤️
Another character that really stood out to me was Jori. He is so sweet, caring, and has impeccable taste in outfits. Loved him.
The spice in here…top notch! There is one particular scene that was a chapter (maybe more?) long and my god, it was so HOT!! I did not want it to end!
I loved reading this book. The plot was great and the plot twist at the end…I’m dying. I NEED BOOK TWO! If you’re looking for something unique with an amazing story, friendship, war, romance, great banter, and a slow burn that will have you going insane then this is a must-read!
Zyva was such a great character. I loved how strong and independent she was and that she could hold her own. And Thane? I loved him just as much. The chemistry between them was so good, and I really enjoyed their banter and the tension throughout the story.
The magic system was probably one of my favorite parts. It was different from anything I’ve read before, and I loved how much detail went into creating this world. Between the rebellion, secrets, and everything happening behind the scenes, there was so much to keep me interested. I also really liked that the romance didn’t take away from the rest of the story. It all fit together really well.
There were several times I thought I knew where things were going, only to be completely wrong. I loved that the story kept me guessing without feeling like things were happening just for the sake of a twist.
And that ending! I genuinely don’t know what I’m supposed to do with that. I have so many questions, and knowing I have to wait for the next book is frustrating in the best way.
I loved the characters, the relationships, the world, and how everything came together. I’m really looking forward to seeing where the story goes next because I need some answers!
Honestly, I’m still processing that ending, but Skin Deep is an absolute 5-star masterpiece. Lloyd built such a cool, gritty world in The Territories with the whole frequency-based magic system, and it felt so fresh and distinct from anything else I’ve read lately. But let’s talk about Zyva and Thane because their dynamic completely ruined me. Zyva is such a resilient, smart FMC, and Thane? The tattoos, the nose ring, the actual dad bod, and that fiercely protective, morally gray energy? I am obsessed. The flirty banter and the slow-burn tension had me swinging between kicking my feet and screaming into my pillow. The plot keeps you on the edge of your seat with the secret rebellion, but it’s the emotional depth—and the high-spice, high-stakes romance, that makes it unforgettable. It’s messy, it’s raw, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since I finished. If you love a grumpy/sunshine dynamic, reluctant allies, and characters who are actually mature go buy this right now OR ELSEEE
I had taken a break from reviewing book and what a book to jump back into it with! If you liked: The giver Divergent Silver elite
THEN THIS IS FOR YOU!!!!! This is a dystopian romance that is just simply enthralling! You are thrown into a rebellion that is well on its way, the scene is perfectly set! The main character is brilliant beyond belief. She has a scientific brain that she fully maximizes throughout the book creating equations and formulas to help. The entire social world is blindly following the direction of their government without a question even going as far as permanent marks on their body. She sees the flaws, she sees a fix and goes for it! The main male interest was not flat, he was very well developed and together they both were a breath of fresh air in the book world! There are so many page turning events that keep you engaged! I refuse to spoil it but pick this book up! Well worth the read!
Skin Deep is a dystopian fantasy with a pretty unique magic system, and I really enjoyed that aspect of the book! But let's talk about Thane for a moment. Oh. My. God. 🥵 I absolutely loved him! He's definitely one of those male characters who makes a lasting impression.
Zyva was also a great FMC. She's smart, tough, and incredibly independent, and I loved that she felt a little different from the female main characters I'm used to reading about. She's more than capable of standing on her own two feet, and I really appreciated that.
The book has so many things I enjoy: a morally grey MMC, flirty banter, high stakes, reluctant allies, a secret rebellion, and a unique frequency-based magic system. And, of course, the touch her and die vibes! 🖤 I really enjoyed the combination of dystopian fantasy, romance, and an unusual magic system. And did I mention Thane? Because seriously… THANE. 🩷🔥
If Divergent & Hunger Games had a baby with some romance elements this would be it! A Romantic Dystopian story with suspenseful elements.
Following Zyva who is so badass and determined loyal. To take down this ridiculous political system Concord and get some real answers!
She tries her hardest to deny her chemistry with our MMC Thane and fight the frequencies but that didn’t last long! He is such a touch her and die type of guy who had my heart swooning!
Let’s not forget Jori, ooo loved him a lot!
I look forward to the next book for this left me like what is going to happen next?!? Thank you to Rae and her team for allowing me to be an ARC READER! Out 10/27!
Fav Quotes: “Our frequencies together are creating their own resonance.” I whisper
“Oh.. Burn… Thane, I’m going to fall.” “I’ve got you, sweetheart. Let go. I’ve got you.”
Wow, wow, wow. What in the world did I just read? Let me just say that Rae Lloyd knocked it out of the park again! For the first time writing in the genre dang girl!!!! I want book 2 now please... If you are looking for a book with fantasy and romance rolled together but something that isn't over done (heck something I have never even heard of before), look no further. The world you will step into will just blow your mind. The chemistry between the FMC and MMC was off the charts. Zyva - FMC is strong, brilliant, and gifted woman! This book was a whirlwind of emotions. I was happy, confused, sad, and angry sometimes all at once. This does end on a cliffhanger but don't be put off by that, you will regret not reading this as soon as you find it! I have now read the last 3 books Rae has put out and I have not been disappointed once. She is an author I will read everything she puts out. Check out all of her books I promise you will enjoy them!!!!
Thank you to the author for the advanced reader copy!
I just finished Skin Deep, and the ending completely blew me away. I really enjoyed the unique magic system based on frequency and tattoos—it's clear that this story has been meticulously crafted, with every detail thoughtfully planned.
As the first book in a duology, it takes its time with world-building, introducing us to the characters gradually and developing a slow-burn romance between the female and male main characters. This pacing makes the love story feel natural and unhurried rather than forced.
The world-building is clear and accessible, never leaving the reader confused or lost. The story gave me vibes similar to Divergent and The Hunger Games, with a steady narrative that carefully builds toward an intense climax—the fight against the ruling Concord. The book ends on a major cliffhanger that will leave you eagerly anticipating the next installment.
Don't let the definitions in the beginning scare you. It looks like a lot but Rae seamlessly builds the world in the beginning that it feels comfortable and natural by the end of the first chapter.
The concept of tattoos and formulas on the body is so unique and fun to explore. There is so much detail about how precise it all has to be, so not to have devastating consequences. No pressure to the Inksmiths.. besides the correct formulas it's imperative to have a steady hand.
The story itself is beautifully woven and I instantly connected with Zyva, Jori, and Thane. I felt their joy, their fear, their hope, their doubt.. their grief. And by the end of it all, it left me craving for more. I can't wait for book 2.
All that to say, if you like found family, rebellion, and powerful tattoos, this is the book for you!
I LOVED Skin Deep. It's unique, and I truly haven't read anything like it before. Rae did an amazing job differentiating her magical world from others! In Skin Deep tattoos aren't just for show, they're the key to unlocking elemental powers! Like any good fantasy book the magic system can be a bit overwhelming at first, but the deeper you get the more badass it becomes.
Zyva is fierce, intelligent, and independent. Literally everything I love in an FMC. The tension, and slow burn, between Zyva and Thane was so good, it was edible. And I was fed!
Was this an emotional rollercoaster? Yes, absolutely. Did the end of this book leave my jaw on the floor? It's still there tbh. Do you need to read this book? I'm honestly offended that you're reading my review instead of the book right now. Go on, git. Go read Skin Deep!
Thank you so much Rae for the opportunity to ARC read asking Deep!
This is it!!!!!! I was never a romantasy fan, with some exceptions but Rae has also never put out a book I haven't LOVED so I had to give this a try.
OMG. I'M SO HAPPY I DID! Thane is one billion percent my new fav MMC. The hardest part will be waiting for the next one!!
It's very clear here that Rae has put an ENORMOUS amount of research in. Fantasy or not, there's a lot of science and knowledge that goes into the foundation of mixing real world science with the system she's devised for this fiction and I can almost feel how many late nights that would have been!
It absolutely pays off. I was hooked!! If you're like me and on the fence about romantasy, DO IT ANYWAY! THIS BOOK WAS AMAZING.
Talk about a unique story and something I've never read before with the best slow burn IMO.
I love a strong FMC and Zyva is definitely that. She is so smart, sassy, independent, and one that wont be pushed over. She has a lot to fight for and a lot to uncover all at the same time.
Idk were to begin with Thane. That man is just as sassy which gave me a good chuckle. Lets talk about the edging and how I may have found myself crossing my legs a few times like Zyva 😅
Oh Jori, how I love that man. He is the best friend we all want and need! His interference was the perfect touch. Cheifs kiss!
This is definitely a slow burn that will leave you hanging you on the edge.
This story was beautiful written and I'm going to need more ASAP.
This dystopian forced proximity romantasy was so good! The unique magic system had me intrigued from the beginning.
Zyva is a strong, intelligent and loyal FMC who is trying to save the people of Concord with her unique frequencies. She also has questions for them that she needs answered. While she’s doing this she’s trying not to fall for Thane
Thane is ex-military, strong and barreling his own demons from the military. He also wants to help take down Concord and while doing so he falls fast for Zyva.
And if you love the FMC and MMC you will love Jori, Zyva’s best friend.
That cliffhanger had me wanting the next book ASAP!!
I’ve had the distinct pleasure to read each of Rae Lloyd’s books and I swear she blows my mind every single time. Her characters, the way she paints the images and scenes is truly incredible. The way at which she pours her heart into what she writes is so beautiful. This is my first romantacy style book and she has opened my world to even more options.
Rae doesn’t write just to cover pages with smut, she creates a world where redemption, love, passion, and so much more flourish. The first spicy scene alone is so different than what you find in most. I’m excited to see what’s next in the series!
That ending!? I’m sorry, but WTAF!? 🤯 Also, JAIL! And you know exactly what you did to end up there! 😭
This was such an amazing read with such a unique system unlike anything I’ve read before! And the slowwwww burn and tension absolutely ATE! The banter, the friendships, and an absolute baddie of an FMC! I loved how smart, strong, and independent Zyva was! And don’t even get me started on Thane! ON. MY. KNEES. FOR. HIM! 😮💨
SO excited for book two! I’ll just be over here hanging off that cliff until then!
Just finished this ARC yesterday & I am obsessed ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thane lives in my head rent free now. He is new Fav MMC. The ending though, really? I literally just got finished bawling my eyes out then you up and leave me hanging like that? Not cool!
But on a real note this book is one of my top 5 favorite reads so far this year. I can’t wait for the next book to come out I have to know how Thane responds!
“You don’t have to marry him, but maybe stop acting like you want to stab him.”
“I never want to say goodbye to you, only hellos.”
What can I say? Skin Deep was amazing. The world the Rae built was full of fantastic characters and the world was so interesting. Zyva is a brilliant engineer that forms a resistance against the government. Working for years underground to take over. Thane is a former guard that was discharged and wants to help their cause. Thane is in awe of Zyva. She is not only brilliant but beautiful and won't take anything for anyone. She's snarky and ignores is advances. Together they work to make the members as fast as possible to fight. Ends on an intriguing cliffhanger.
This book is living in my mind rent free!! I'm a die hard romantasy girl and this was such a refreshing change of pace from the typical fae, dragon, kingdom books. This was a brand new magical world that was built beautifully by the author! If you love a good slow burn....this book is for you!! The FMC is amazingly intelligent and independent and the MMC is the kind that you secretly fantasize about. You'll fall in love with all of the other characters, as well. This author always amazes me with her books; they're ALL so good!!
I knew it was going to be amazing because Rae is a fantastic author, but are we kidding?
The frequencies/magic system was so cool! This was actually one of the faster paced as far as world building in my eyes (maybe it just clicked faster than some for me?) which I loved!
Thane is seriously one of my favorite MMCs & Zyva- the fiery, red head FMC, who is of course brilliant is up at the top as well 😍 I LOVED both of those characters so much.
The ending left me anxiously waiting for the next one!
What a unique book! This book had all the good things. A book boyfriend to die for, a super unique magic system, a badass, incredibly smart fmc, a romance that brought the heat, and HUGE twists at the end. I read a lot of romantasy, so it’s refreshing to find one that isn’t like so many of the others. Now, while I was intimidated by the magic system at first because it was quite complex, I’m glad I stuck it out. That ending 🤯 I can’t wait to see where book 2 goes. Thank you Rae for the arc copy. All opinions are my own.
I knew I would like this book from the first few pages with the glossary. This was a very unique and interesting story. It took be a few chapters to get into it but once I did I was hooked. I love Zyva and Thanes relationship and everything about them. Zyva is a strong character without being overbearing. Thane is patient enough for her. They had some hot, steamy moments but I do wish there were more. This book may make you sob and the ending is fire. I cant wait for the next book to come out. I need it yesterday!
