Louis Marie-Anne Couperus (June 10, 1863 – July 16, 1923) was a Dutch novelist and poet of the late 19th and early 20th century. He is usually considered one of the foremost figures in Dutch literature.

From my own Dutch book-collection I've chosen this work by Louis Couperus (1863-1923), one of the great Dutch authors ever, and this book was originally published in 1897, and that's why it's in an old-Dutch language from the late 19th Century, but still very good to follow and thus to read.

This review is mainly destined to my Dutch book-friends, because sadly to my knowledge this book has never been translated and published in English, but nevertheless I like everyone to know about this work.

The book is in my view the author's ability and hard work to reincarnate and replace himself within his personages and circumstances he wants to write about, and to endure the metamorphosis to give his words, whether it is in his poems or, in this case, this novel called, Metamorfoze, the true meaning he wants his readers to experience.

All in all this is a fine book that is divided into 5 parts, 1-Torquato Tasso, 2-Mathilde, 3-Nirwana, 4-Anarchisme and 5-Metamorfoze, in which the author is describing the hard and sometimes desperate times when writing his verses or novels, the way he really wants it and what it all will cost him to reach his goal, and because he does that so well I would like to call this book: "A Very Pleasant Transformation"!

Louis Couperus (1863-1923) was a Dutch author. I picked up his books quite recently, when I read the book ‘Langs lijnen van geleidelijkheid’ (Inevitable) by him for Dutch class. I liked it that much, that I promptly made it my number one book on my list and decided I wanted to read more by him. The first book after that I picked up was ‘Metamorfoze’.

The book itself is about a writer who develops himself over time. The book is divided into five parts, each of them being a metamorphosis of said writer Hugo Aylva. How he develops, both in his writing and his character, and how he eventually writes what could be considered his true story.

It sounds a boring book, to cover 300 pages with especially. But I was swept off my feet by it. Maybe it’s because I have writing ambitions myself, I don’t know. It gave me the opportunity to identify with Hugo, especially during the first two parts of the book. After that, he went through developments that haven’t happened to me yet. (Hey, I’m only seventeen!) In fact, it sometimes felt so personal that I was almost afraid to talk with other people about the book. He told about how it feels when you’ve finished a book - that when you look at it, it doesn’t feel like yours anymore. That a book dies to you once you’ve finished it, while it’s been alive for so long in your mind that you’ve considered the characters to be your best friends or even you.

What I loved was that the book has a positive ending, a hopeful ending for the future. You could take it as a general note for life: there will be difficulties, and at times, you’ll think you won’t manage at all. You leave people or they leave you, things won’t run smoothly for a while, but in the end, we can all have a happy ending.

Even though I’m finishing this review over a month after reading the book, it still hasn’t left me. It surely left a big impression, meaning I find it a really good book, in despite of the fact it’s 111 years old. If you are attracted to stories in a story itself, the way of a writer, or if the book and/or its writer just appeal to you, be sure not to miss it out!

'Metamorfose' is een semi-autobiografische roman waarin Couperus zijn ontwikkelingen als schrijver analyseert aan de hand van zijn alter-ego Hugo Aylva. De roman is verdeeld in vijf delen, die corresponderen met vijf boeken: Het boek van Torquato Tasso, Het boek van Mathilde (waarin we Eline Vere herkennen), incl. 'Het Schaakspel' (Noodlot), het boek van Nirwana (Extase), het boek van anarchisme (Majesteit) en het boek van Metamorfose zelf.

We volgen Aylva's eerste schreden op het schrijverschrap, zijn haat-liefdeverhouding met zijn voltooide boeken, zijn worsteling met zijn talent en zijn bescheiden wensen in het leven, zijn problemen met de absurditeit van het leven, de ultieme eenzaamheid van het bestaan en het verschrijden van de tijd en zijn eerste grote liefde. Veel van deze onderwerpen moet iedere twintiger onder ogen zien, en daarmee is 'Metamorfose' een krachtig portret van deze fase in het leven.

Couperus spaart zijn jonge hoofdpersoon niet, die als gevoelig, sentimenteel, lethargisch, zelfzuchtig en ultiem onzeker wordt neergezet. Couperus' schrijfstijl is zeer eigen en behoorlijk gevoelig en zal niet iedereen bekoren. Enige kennis van het literaire klimaat van eind 19e eeuw is ook wel welkom.

Metamorfose is een echt meta-boek, en daarmee een dappere en zeer moderne intellectuele exercitie. Daarenboven kent de roman prachtige passages, maar als vertelling schiet het boek uiteindelijk te kort en het einde is wat onbevredigend.

Prachtig boek. Niet voor de eerste keer dat ik het lees. Over de 'kleine ziel' Hugo Aylva die bijna zijns ondanks schrijver is. De titel verwijst naar de metamorfose die Aylva ondergaat op het moment dat hij schrijft over het leven van een ander, die hij bijna wordt, maar toch niet helemaal. En misschien ook naar de metamorfose in het uiterlijke leven van Aylva: aanvankelijk een naar grote somberte neigend mens, die elke keer na het voltooien van een boek in een depressie wegzakt, onder andere omdat oordelen over kunst zo makkelijk gegeven worden en zo weinig voorstellen. Eigenlijk is voor Aylva alleen het scheppen van de figuren waardevol, zodra het wordt opgeschreven en, erger nog, gedrukt, wordt de kunst een zaak van de buitenwereld.
Absoluut hoogtepunt in het boek is het gesprek van Aylva met Helene, waarin hij zich in al zijn zwakte en hulpeloosheid durft te tonen. Daarna gaat het helaas bergafwaarts met het boek. Het laatste deel, waarin hij trouwt met zijn jeugdvriendinnetje, is eigenlijk onverteerbaar. De laatste regel van het boek drukt een wel heel kleffe moraal uit: aanvankelijk heeft Aylva steeds het waardevolle in zijn leven niet weten te waarderen, het geluk in zijn huwelijk waardeert hij wel.

Mijn probleem met Louis Couperus is dat, hoewel ik enorm van zijn schrijfwerk hou, zijn boeken nogal langdradig zijn, waardoor ik meestal rond 3/4 mijn interesse verlies. Zijn boeken zouden eigenlijk perfect voor me zijn als ze rond de 200 pagina’s waren…
